January Review and Febuary Preview

Bozic winning in Australia was the highlight of the month, and gives us a fantastic position to stay in the UWT.
The whole team performed well, and will only improve as the season progresses.
A bit of a dissapointing result in the GP Marseilles, but for a first race for Feillu, very promising.

Borut Bozic was awarded Rider of the Month, yet more reason to celebrate.
He also leads the UWT and CQ rankings.
VCD lead the UWT and CQ rankings.

Our shedule for Febuary is again rather sparse, with no UWT races.
We will compete at;
Etoile de Bessege
Vuelta Andalucia
Omloop Het Nieuwsblad
as well as another cobbles race, and one day hilly race, to announced nearer the time.

Romain Feillu will race the Etoile
Mosquera will race Andalucia

See you in France ....

Short reports on the Etoile Bessege and Vuelta Andalucia will be up shortly.
The other two Febuary races are the GP Insurbia and Kurne-Brusseles-Kurne.

We are also tryin got obtain some NC jerseys for Poland, Italy, Denmark, Spain and France ... but are having problems ....

Etoile Besseges - Stage 1&2
Team;
Romain Feillu
Pim Ligthart
Jonny Hoogerland
Maxim Belkov
Matjin Keizer
Jens Mouris
Sergey Lagutin

Stage 1 was an undulating route, that culminated in a mass sprint.
An early group of 16 riders went clear, including Belkov. Belkov took both Mountain Sprints and the KoM.
i1117.photobucket.com/albums/k587/Average_Man/Vacansoleil-DCM/earlybotd1.png

The final sprint was not easy, as our train kept being disrupted. This allowed Bonnet (FDJ) to take the stage win, ahead of Feillu in second.
i1117.photobucket.com/albums/k587/Average_Man/Vacansoleil-DCM/bonnetwin1.png

Stage 2 was a hilly stage, with a lot of sharp climbs in the early half of the day. VCD took advantage of this, by setting tempo and thining the field. Belkov went into the BOTD but was unable to defend his jersey, losing it the Scherlinxx.
The final sprint was downhill and much more straight forward. Ligthart lead-out Feillu until 1km to go. Feillu then lead home against a couple of late surges to claim his first win of the year, and the GC lead.
i1117.photobucket.com/albums/k587/Average_Man/Vacansoleil-DCM/feilluwin2.png

Summary;
Good solid start while still trying to gauge early season form.
Feillu seems to be feeling good, and the lead-out is starting to look proffesional.
We are looking forward to the rest of the race, and hope to defend the GC lead, if not for Feillu

News Flash;
We are pulling out of the Vuelta a Andalucia and the GP Insurbia.
The reasoning for this is that we will save the racing days, and go harder in UWT events.
In fact we are stripping our calendar right back to UWT races, and a few others to build form.

Etoile Besseges - Stage 3,4 & 5

Stage 3 was another hilly test, pushing our riders to the limits.
Two riders formed the break late on, but forced an extremely hard chase back. We got them back, but at the expense of our train.
Thus Feillu was in a difficult position to win, but came fourth.
i1117.photobucket.com/albums/k587/Average_Man/Vacansoleil-DCM/closesprint.png

Stage 4 should have been more straight forward, and it was.
Easily catching the break, strong train.
Feillu win number 2, done and dusted.
i1117.photobucket.com/albums/k587/Average_Man/Vacansoleil-DCM/feilluwin4.png

Stage 5 was the conclusion, if a surprising one.
We had decided that we would only chase the break to defend our GC lead, and thus only pulled the break back to ensure that result. This meant the teams of the other sprinters would have to pull it back for a sprint.
They couldn't, and the Break of 5 took the win.
While Feillu beat the rest of the peloton to 6th.

Summary;
Solid performance.
Feillu was the best sprinter in the field, and showed it.
Good all-round team control, but our lead outs still need work, but it is still only Febuary.

As we announced earlier we wont be racing again until the Omloop Het Neiusblad cobbles towards the end of the month.

See you in Belgium....
Ferrari-BA > Psuedo Man Game

Wiley
Omloop Het Nieuwsblad & Kuurne-Brussels-Kuurne
(before i start iw ould like to make clear that i can not ride cobbles, at all. I once made a team including Flech, Cancellara, Boonen, Leuekmans and still couldn't get top 10)

The Omloop was our first sponsor goal, and the first cobbles of the year.
A very classy field, with Leukmans, cob80, being a mid range outsider.
Cancellara, Boonen and Flecha were going to be the ones to watch.
Riders (for both races);
Borut Bozic
Stijn Devolder
Gorik Gardeyn
Jonny Hoogerland
Bjorn Leukemans
Marco Marcato
Frederik Veuchelen
Lieuwe Westra

We got Marcato into the early break of 5 riders, which meant he was the first man to ride the cobbles this year.
i1117.photobucket.com/albums/k587/Average_Man/Vacansoleil-DCM/firstcobblesoftheyear.png

Vanspeybroeck attacked on the 3rd from last cobbled section, and quickly gained time.
Behind, the peloton formed elite groups, with Leukemans only getting into the 2nd chase group.
Up ahead it was a solo win for Vanspeybroeck, ahead of Hushovd and Boonen.
i1117.photobucket.com/albums/k587/Average_Man/Vacansoleil-DCM/vanspwin.png

Leukemans came in 17th, missing our goal of the top 10.

Kuurne-Bruxelles-Kuurne featured most of the same riders, but was more suited to us, the long flat loops would provide Bozic with a solid chance of victory.
Around half way the peloton split, with 10 riders getting ahead of the 20man peloton, including 5 VCD riders.
The group was caught with 15km to go.
This was the least of the problems, as we had stated to lap riders, and it was almost impossible to keep track of who was where.
Vansummeren used this to lauch an attack at 10km to go.
This killed our lead out train, and ruined Bozic chance of a decent finish.
Amorison took the sprint, while Bozic could only recover to 14th.

Summary;
Cobbles should be kinder to us than this.
The competitive startlists didn't help, nor did a lack of form.
Hopefully we will be in better shape for the Flanders Classics.
Ferrari-BA > Psuedo Man Game

March Preview
I'll start by reporting that the Rankings hardly changed over Febuary.
Bozic is still UWT No.1
Vacansoleil-DCM is still UWT No.1
Bozic is still CQ No.1
Vacansoleil are now CQ No.4

Up next are Paris-Nice and Tirreno-Adriatico.
Big races, and a top 5 at Paris-Nice is a sponsor goal, and thus will be our focus. But any points are welcome.

Before we will warm up with Strade Bianchi in Italy.

See you in Italy...

Strade Bianchi
Warm weather and a stiff breeze welcomed the riders to this Pari-Nice warmup.
Riders;
Bjorn Luekemans
Santo Anza
Michal Golas
Ruslan Pidgornyy
Wout Poels
Rob Ruijh
Mirko Selvaggi
Joost Van Leijen

Selvaggi was one of two breakaways, the other being Belloti (LIQ).
Together they rode 130km ahead of the chasers.
The peloton split with 1/3 race left, with Leukemans on the wrong side.
From here i sat back and watched the action up front.
Vinokourov looked strong going clear with 2km left.
But he wasn't strong enough to beat Rodriguez, who came flying through with 900m to go, to win.

Paris-Nice Stages 1&2

Riders;

Romain Feillu
Michal Golas
Jonny Hoogerland
Pim Ligthart
Wout Mol
Lieuwe Westra
Joost Van Leijen

Stage 1 was a flat stage, supposed to end in a mass sprint.
Westra was our man in a 3 strong break. He tried to go solo at 30km, and gained 20".

At the same time Cancellara went solo off the front of the peloton.
He caught the now reformed break at 7km to go.
The break opened their sprint, just as the main peloton caught them under the flamme rouge.
Cancellara had enough of a gap to win. Ligthart tried to lead out Feillu but came in 4th after Feillu got boxed in.

Stage 2 was another flat stage, but was much more straight forward.
Mol was part of the break today. Which consisted of 6 in total.

The break finally surrenderd at 10km, allowing for a straight forward sprint finish.
Ligthart lead out Feillu properly today, and Feillu rode home to the victory, and the GC lead.

Summary;
Solid start, which gives me much hope that we might be able to get a Top 5 overall placing, or at least another stage win or two.
Ferrari-BA > Psuedo Man Game

Wiley
Paris-Nice Stage 3

A lumpy profile, with the days only catagorised climb 21km from the line, it was going to be a tricky day.

The early break held 5 members, the biggest of which was Boom (RAB).
All but Boom were caught on the final climb, when VCD took some reponsibility to chase.
Koren (LIQ) attacked on the descent, countered by Westra.
i1117.photobucket.com/albums/k587/Average_Man/Vacansoleil-DCM/westrasolo3.png

Behind there was a fall in the peloton, spliting th field and impacting many of the favorites, such as Wiggins, Cancellara, Gerrans, who all lost 1'00 to the other big names.
i1117.photobucket.com/albums/k587/Average_Man/Vacansoleil-DCM/crash3.png

Boom held on to win, with Koren 2nd and Westra 3rd.
