well done Cadel! Pfft
great time trial ride! 7 seconds is a pretty close but good win! Pfft

Batista15
Really nice time trial report by the way! The decision was closer than expected, also nice results by Matthews and Goss.

Thanks guys! I'm glad you liked the timetrial report. Grin

Unfortunately, I received this mail today:

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/news_2.jpg
This wasn't the news we wanted, since this means that we have failed one of our season goals, to get a stage win at the Tour Down Under. The 4 teams who received the Wild Cards were: Androni, Europcar, Farnese Vini and Team Type 1. Especially the latest one is a bit surprising.

Nice, will you sign Ludvigsson? Grin You're one of the best writers, both Leopard and Columbia were great stories, it would be fun to see you finish a season. I wish you the best of luck!

@all: Thanks! Positive feedback is always feels great. Smile
@laidbackmarc: I haven't planned that, but when you mention it I think it sounds like a good idea! This one will definitely last longer than both of my past stories. Last of all, thank you! Grin

Note: Next report might be later today, otherwise sometime tomorrow.

We're sending a quite strong squad here. Docker is in best shape, so he will share the leaders role with Hupond, who's the strongest puncheur. Reimer will be aiming for stage 2 and 3, since those finishes favours a sprinter who can get over hills. Doi, Damuseau and Bonnin will have free roles to try their own chances in long breakaways, while De Backer and Han will be bottle collectors and domestique for our two leaders. We are hoping for a good result here, since all the riders in our squad is in decent shape.

Favourites:
*** Pozzovivo
** Cataldo, Finetto
* Bole, Pietropolli, Seeldraeyers

Pozzovivo should be the man to beat here. Especially stage 1 should favour his strong climbing skills, but you can't be sure how he'll do since it's still early in the season and his form might be really bad.
Finetto and especially Cataldo might challenge Pozzovivo the most I think. Both of them will definitely be up there in the uphill finishes, and Finetto might be able to take advantage of his good sprint to grab a few bonus seconds in stage two and three.
I also want to mention Bole. He might struggle a bit on stage one, but has a good chance to pick up some bonus seconds in the other two stages.
Pietropolli and Seeldraeyers also has a theoretic chance to win this race, but I think the overall winner will be one of the three I mentioned first.

Stage 1: Melito - Catanzaro
i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/gdc_1.jpg
Probably the hardest of the three stages in this race. The very steep final climb in Catanzaro will definitely break up the peloton and create some gaps between the favourites. It will most probably end up in a sprint from a smaller group, with a punchy sprinter taking the win, but if there is attacks early on the climb those might be dropped. This stage can certainly end up in a lot of ways.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/gdc_1_2.jpg
Doi attacked almost immediately after the race directors had waved the flag at the start. Nobody followed him.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/gdc_1_3.jpg
After a few kilometres in solo lead, Doi was joined by three other riders: Modolo (Colnago), Jarc (Adria Mobil) and Pakthusov (ISD Conti).

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/gdc_1_4.jpg
Our plan was to let Doi collect as many sprint points as possible, but with Modolo in the group it was a bit tricky.
At the first intermediate sprint Doi edged out Modolo with a few millimeters.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/gdc_1_5.jpg
With a 100 km to go, the four leaders were joined by another group containing Longo Borghini (Liquigas), Jezowski (BGZ), Kohut (Miche) and surprisingly one of the overall favourites, Grega Bole.
Jezowski and Bole will make it even harder for Doi to pick up bonus seconds.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/gdc_1_6.jpg
Doi managed to surprise the others though, and won all five of the intermediate sprints on this stage.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/gdc_1_7.jpg
15 km from the line the breakaway group still held an advantage of 3' to the peloton. Kohut and Pakthusov saw the chance of getting themselves a stage win and tried to move clear of the rest of the breakaway.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/gdc_1_8.jpg
Their move was unsuccessful, though, as Doi brought them all back on the climb. With a little more than three k's to go they were almost caught by the pack, so Doi decided to give it one last try and attacked.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/gdc_1_9.jpg
Kevin Seeldraeyers (Quickstep) set up a tremendously high pace up the last bit of the climb. Doi couldn't resist to Seeldraeyers' pace and was caught with just two k's to go. The hard pace also made the peloton split, with only 15 riders able to follow Seeldraeyers.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/gdc_1_10.jpg
As the sprint began, Seeldraeyers and his team mate Devenyns moved clear of the others. Docker still had very good legs, but was blocked and couldn't move forward! Was this going to end with a Quickstep double?

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/gdc_1_11.jpg
No! From behind comes Mitchell Docker like a rocket and overtakes the two Belgians! Finetto also comes past them and finishes second, while Seeldraeyers holds on for third.
Unfortunately for us, our other leader, Thierry Hupond was caught behind the split and loses 48 seconds to Docker. Still, what a start of the season for us!

Wow, a stage where you can achieve the points-lead only thanks to the intermediate-sprints Smile Skil was dominating this stage, nice one! A bit surprised to see Docker winning at this climb, he must have been at least + 3 Wink

Stage 2: Soverato - Vibo Valentia
i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/gdc_2.jpg
Another hilly stage, but not as hard as the first one. The major difficulty on the route is the long, steep climb which's top is located just twenty k's from the finish line. If the pace is hard on that climb, we might see a small group fighting for the win. If not, it might be a slightly reduced peloton.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/gdc_2_1.jpg
The day's early breakaway: Szmyd (Liquigas), Reynes, Buchacek (both PSK-Whirlpool) and our young Frenchman Thomas Damuseau.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/gdc_2_2.jpg
The breakaway was given a quite big advantage, but as soon as we reached the flat part, Quickstep and Lampre started chasing very hard.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/gdc_2_3.jpg
When the peloton was just one minute behind the breakaway, Damuseau decided to leave his two companions Szmyd and Buchacek, while Reynes had been dropped earlier.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/gdc_2_4.jpg
Damuseau was eventually caught by Szmyd at the intermediate sprint.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/gdc_2_5.jpg
But it was all over for them with 30 k to go, when they were swallowed by the pack.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/gdc_2_6.jpg
Up the climb, Hupond tried to gain back the time he lost yesterday and put up a terrific pace. Only the two Quickstep boys Seeldraeyers and Cataldo managed to keep up with the Frenchman, while the yellow jersey of Docker had a bad day and was fighting to stay in contact with the reduced peloton.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/gdc_2_7.jpg
At the top of the climb, Hupond's pace was too much for Cataldo too.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/gdc_2_8.jpg
With five kilometres left, Cataldo rejoined the leading duo together with Efimkin (TT1) and another Quickstep rider, Dries Devenyns.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/gdc_2_9.jpg
As we started the final kilometer, Seeldraeyers motored away from the others with tremendous power. Hupond had pretty good legs, but he could just watch as Seeldraeyers powered clear.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/gdc_2_10.jpg
Nobody could stop Seeldraeyers today and the Belgian takes a nice victory after finishing third on stage one.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/gdc_2_11.jpg
Cataldo just edged out Hupond for second, 17s behind his team mate Seeldraeyers, completing the double for Quickstep. He also moves up to second place overall, while Hupond is now sitting in 7th.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/gdc_2_12.jpg
1'05 later, Capecchi lead Group Docker over the line. Docker didn't have his great legs from yesterday and drops down to 5th overall.

Giro della Calabria
Stage 3: Pizzo - Reggio Calabria
i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/gdc_3.jpg
Stage 3 is classified as hilly, but it's more of a flat stage than a hilly one. Yes, the stage include a 1st category climb, but at the top of it there is still almost 50 km's to go. That means plenty of time for the sprinters to recover before the mass sprint finish.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/gdc_3_1.jpg
A group of five broke away just after the start. The group included two national champions, Kusztor (Atlas) from Hungary and Kvachuk (Lampre) from Ukraine. The other three in the group were: Jezowski (BGZ), Piscopiello (De Rosa) and Randazzo (Miche).

A while later they were joined by twelve more riders, forming the day's long breakaway. The most notable riders in it were Szmyd (Liquigas) and Savini (Colnago).

Our tactic today was to let Docker set a high pace up the climb to drop some of the sprinters in favour for Reimer, who can get over the climb without any bigger problems. The tactic worked quite well, close to the top of the climb there was only 35 riders left in the peloton.

With a kilometer to the top, Hupond attacked. We wanted to put some pressure on the Quickstep team and also let Docker rest a bit before the final leadout.

Hupond's attack was quite successful. At the bottom of the descent he had passed the breakaway and distanced the pack by a minute.

Hupond's attack worried the Quickstep team, and they took the responsibility to chase him back. No disaster for us though.

As we entered Reggio Calabria, we started to put up a leadout for Reimer, who was one of few sprinters left in the group. Hupond used up his last energy to move his team mates to the front.

After Hupond, De Backer took over. He did it with tremendous power, and created a small gap back to the rest of the peloton.

After such a great leadout, it was a formality for Martin Reimer to win the stage. The Liquigas duo of Finetto and Capecchi completed the podium, while Seeldraeyers finished safely in the peloton and successfully defended his race lead, which means that he has won the Giro della Calabria! Congrats to him and his Quickstep team!
