Petronas - Monster Energy; The end of an era

img30.imageshack.us/img30/4091/stage1l.jpg img585.imageshack.us/img585/5509/1route.jpg
Luckily, there is only a little breeze. Of course the daily BOTD is formed, consisting of Sven van den Houte (Veranda's), Robert Retschke (NetAPP), Anton Vorobyev (Itera), Hugo Houle (Spidertech) and Juan Lobato (Andalucia).
img851.imageshack.us/img851/7138/3botd.jpg.
Nick Nuyens (Saxo) makes the jump, and in the end only Nuyens and Houle are ahead of the bunch.
img199.imageshack.us/img199/2201/5houleennuyens.jpg
But of course, it turns out to be a mass sprint. From left to right, you can see the trains of Katusha (Galimzyanov), Movistar (Rojas) and Astana (Davis), with Theo Bos in the wheel of Davis.
img10.imageshack.us/img10/6226/6treintjes.jpg
Allan Davis shows his excellent shape and takes the win. With an ultimate jump, Bos passes Rojas and Jimmy Casper (Saur) a takes the 2nd spot. A great start of the Tour of Oman for Monster!

Stage 2:
img225.imageshack.us/img225/9400/stage2l.jpg img820.imageshack.us/img820/5509/1route.jpg

Again, almost no wind. And again, a BOTD (most known names K. de Kort (Skil) and S. Poulhies (Saur)) gets away with a maximum lead of 5 minutes 30.
img560.imageshack.us/img560/1017/2botd.jpg
And again, the bunch gets them back and it will be a mass sprint.
Movistar and Astana make the 2 sprinttrains with 1.5km to go.
img713.imageshack.us/img713/8149/3treintjes.jpg
Bos decides to have a different tactic today. Instead of waiting for a final jump, he wants to surprise Davis and Rojas. But when he wants to do that, he gets closed in by a lot off riders who started their sprint very, very early, like Impey, Casper and Kluge. He tries to switch to the left side of the road, but there are sprinters everywhere... Why are these Oman streets so wide?
So, Davis manages to make it a back-to-back victory with Rojas on 2 and NetApp's Daryl Impey on 3. Bos has to be satisfied with the 7th place.

Tactics meeting:
Rob Ruijgh:"DS, I want to go in the attack today."
Me: "No!"
Joost Posthuma: "This terrain suits me, I feel like attacking."
Me: "No again, whatever you're gonna try, it will end up in a mass sprint, so no attacks and save your energy, tomorrow is Jabal al Akhdhar..."

And so it happened... A BOTD img29.imageshack.us/img29/1017/2botd.jpg, the bunch got them back with 10 kilometres to go, then Belgium duo Leif Hoste (Katusha) and Nick Nuyens give it a go. img15.imageshack.us/img15/9584/3nuyenshoste.jpg
They get a 50 second lead, but it is fruitless (well, my predictions are pretty good in this tour).
Theo Bos takes the wheel of Alan Davis again, but this time, the Aussie doesn't have the legs. It's José Rojas who is the fastest, so it's a 3-2-1 for the Movistar-sprinter.

Oh, stupid me..... Almost had a long report finished, with a lot of screenshots... When I clicked the wron button and all was gone. So don't feel like doing it all again, you only get a brief summary.

BOTD with our Francis de Greef, Leif Hoste (Kathusha), Paul Voss (Endura), Maxim Iglinskiy (Astana) and sme more. Maximum lead of 5 minutes, only 2 left at thet foot of Jabal Al Kahdhar.
Simon Geschke (Skil) and Jack Bauer (Endura) escaped from the bunch, and Giovanni Visconti (Farnes) followed them. Our riders went uphill in their own pace.
1km to go and Viscontin is the first to sprint:
img88.imageshack.us/img88/3039/61kmy.jpg
The Italian stays in front untill the finish, almost got surprised by Kiwi Bauer, with German Geschke in 3rd.
img695.imageshack.us/img695/8425/8finish.jpg
Wilco Kelderman finishes in 9th, one place before Marc de Maar.

Stage 5: Time Trial Time!
img6.imageshack.us/img6/3783/stage5l.jpg
img854.imageshack.us/img854/5509/1route.jpg

The fastest time in the beginning of the day is set by Endura's Robert Partridge (30'10). Our photographer was still asleep, so no pictures of him. The first Monster-riders didn't set a good time (wasn't expected). Then Joost Posthuma came and had a very good 2nd part of the race, finishing just 5 seconds behind Partridge.
img819.imageshack.us/img819/1954/4posthuma.jpg
Unfortunately, he missed the podium finishing in 4th.
Kelderman and De Maar had a nice battle, with Kelderman being 1 second faster, finishing in 34th place, one before De Maar. For Kelderman it was enough to stay in the top 10, even climbing one place to number 9!
img577.imageshack.us/img577/1164/7demaar.jpgimg856.imageshack.us/img856/5867/8kelderman.jpg
Then Rory Sutherland crushed the time from Partridge (our photographer already started to worry about the DS' reaction missing the winner of the ITT...) with 14 seconds and setting the time to beat at 29'56.
img594.imageshack.us/img594/4148/2sutherland.jpg
GC number 3, Simon Geschke, had a decent ITT, finishing in 14th place, 34 seconds behind Sutherland.
img593.imageshack.us/img593/9142/3geschke.jpg
GC number 2 Jack Bauer (riding with the Polka dot-jersey, because leader Visconti wears the leader jersey) did a great job, finishing as 3rd and 15 seconds behind Sutherland (and also securing 2 podiumspots for Endura racing!)
img543.imageshack.us/img543/1711/5bauer.jpg
GC leader Giovanni Visconti now knew he needed a 30'23 to stay in the lead. He fought as a true Italian lion (for what I know, there are no lions in the Italian wild...) and succedeed: 30'16 and 6th place!

Hey guys,
I've seen that there are more than 500 views already, and I'm very happy with that. But I don't get comments from you (well, had 3 in total). I don't ask to do it, because that's not the way.
But I like to get feedback on my storywriting, pictures, etc. Too much, too few, more writing? Please tell me, that will make it more fun for me to carry on with it, 'cause I intend to continue it.
imageshack.us/a/img171/3023/petronasmesig2.png

Tooom3k
I think reports are really good and the story is really interesting. You should keep going and you will get more comments when GTs will come Wink

mattie524
i agree with Tooom. the more you write the more views you get!
its a great story though! pictures, stories everything!
Heres my feedback.
The amount of images is good. The amount of writing is good (except for that Jabal Al Akhdhar stage, but i understand what happened so its ok Smile )
however there is some things you can add it may take more time but will make the story better.
add the full results of a race in a spoiler. from 1st to last.
after each race, add the full GC standings (1st to last), sprint points standings, king of mountain standings and youngster standings.
For these ones (excluding GC) you should put from 1st to about 15th or 20th.
Also, you should put who wins the sprints and king of mountain points (everyone who gets points) as they happen. So if the there is a sprint a king of mountain and another sprint put it like this:

Sprint Points:
Spoiler
1st: Cadel Evans
2nd: Mark Cavendish
3rd: Alberto Contador
4th: Andy Shleck
5th: Frank Schleck

King Of Mountain:
Spoiler
1st: Andy Schleck
2nd: Frank Schleck
3rd: Cadel Evans
4th: Alberto Contador

Sprint Points:
Spoiler
1st: Mark Cavendish
2nd: Cadel Evans
3rd: Frank Schleck
4th Alberto Contador
5th: Andy Schleck

As i said it will take a little more time but it will make the story very interesting and im guessing a lot more people will follow and comment Smile
Apart from these little bumps and mishaps your story is great and i cant wait for it to continue!!
Also another thing i just remembered whilst looking at your images! Please change the language to english! i cant stress it enough! a majority of the people reading this speak english so if it is english it will be much easier. If you want to keep it the language it is then thats fine but if it doesnt really matter then change it to english please! if you do that can you put up another picture of the team stats!?
hope this feed back was helpful! Grin

Tooom3k & mattie524: Thanks for your comments, really appreciate it. I've changed the language to ENglish, and as requested, here are the stats again:

And we've got some great new: ASO send us an email:
img84.imageshack.us/img84/1583/parisnicewildcard.jpg

Excellent news, apparantly we did that well in the Tour Down Under, that ASO gave us a wildcard for Paris Nice. Hopefully, we also receive the requested Wildcard for the Tirreno!

Stage 6:
img14.imageshack.us/img14/5502/stage6l.jpg
img710.imageshack.us/img710/5509/1route.jpg

Before the race I had a talk with Wilco Kelderman. He wanted to defend his 9th place in the GC, but knew that Rojas normally would pass him because of the bonus seconds. So we made a plan: an early attack!
And so he did. He was the first to reach the summit of the Qurayyat
img52.imageshack.us/img52/5541/2kotm.jpg
And was able to stay in the lead and took the 6 bonus seconds, so he overtook Serguei Ivanov in the GC!
img89.imageshack.us/img89/498/3isp.jpg
After he had slowed down, a 10-man BOTD was formed with Vanlandschoot (Veranda), Oliphant (Endura), Pena (Colombia) and Poulhies (Saur) being the most famous. The maximum advantage was 6 minutes.
img577.imageshack.us/img577/661/4botd.jpg
When the riders entered the closed circuit near Mattrah Seafront, the breakaway and the bunch could see each other.
img62.imageshack.us/img62/5850/5circuit.jpg
With 8 km to go, they were all together and it was sure that it would turn out in mass sprint number 4.
img580.imageshack.us/img580/3606/6samen.jpg

The trains were formed. Movistar was in the lead with Ventoso leading out Rojas on his way to the 2nd victory. We tried a different tactic this time, in stead of taking the wheel of Davis, we formed our own train. Posthuma was in front of Pim Ligthart, who was leading out Bos. But we lost contact in the last sharp corner. Theo Bos made a small mistake, and had to close a big gap to the back wheel of Ligthart. This exhausted him to much, and he finished in 16th place, 3 places behind Ligthart!
img844.imageshack.us/img844/6543/725km.jpg
In front, Rojas was truely impressive and crushed his opponents. I was so flabbergasted, that I forgot to take a picture of the Spaniard taking his 2nd victory (and overtook Kelderman in the GC, as expected).

It was Giovanni Visconti who managed to stay in the lead of the GC. Congrats to the Italian champion, and I'm sure his sponsor Farnese Vini gave a big party that evening with their own tasty wine!

The Vuelta de Andalucia starts with a 6.7 km prologue in the surrounding of Benahavis. It starts with a short downhill, and ends with a steep climb, with gradients over 15%! So it won't be enough to just ride hard, you have to be a puncheur as well!

img709.imageshack.us/img709/6916/routel.jpg

The Dutch Niki Terpstra is in preparation for the first cobbled classics, and beat the current time of Zingle: 12'00.
img198.imageshack.us/img198/4458/2terpstra.jpg
GC-favourite Peter Sagan showed in the Tour Down Under that he's in good shape, and he continues that. He's 1 second faster than Terpstra! 11'59 minutes.
img52.imageshack.us/img52/4695/3sagan.jpg

With only a few riders to go, I looked at the standings. Well, it was pretty good for our self-esteem!
img821.imageshack.us/img821/5923/tussenstand.jpg

Then Jack Bobridge came along, this supertalent crushed the time of Sagan with 4 seconds, setting the best time at 11'55!
img849.imageshack.us/img849/9439/1zingle.jpg

Only 3 contenders to go, 2 of them being strong GC-opponents. First Italian Marzio Bruseghin, but the Movistar rider came 10 seconds short. BUt he ended as the best non-Monster rider in 5th place.
img842.imageshack.us/img842/3210/4bruseghin.jpg

Thomas de Gendt came very, very close. But not enough: 1 second slower than Bobridge.
img849.imageshack.us/img849/5218/5degendt.jpg

One rider to go. But it was unsecure if Olympic champion Samuel Sanchez was in good shape. Well, he performed all right, but the clocked stopped ticking at 12'13 putting him in place 9.
img847.imageshack.us/img847/4484/6sanchez.jpg

So what a first stage in Andalucia! 7 riders in the top 10, and we secured the top 4 places!!
img24.imageshack.us/img24/4789/podiumoq.jpg

Well, you can imagine that the mood at the dinner table was verry cheerful. The only thing to worry about is not to eat contamined meat (Clenbuterol!!), so we can focus on defending the leader jersey!

Stage 2:
img155.imageshack.us/img155/5509/1route.jpg

In Andalucia's 2nd stage we enter the mountain. There are 3 KOTM-summits on the menu, with an altitude over 1000metres. Early in the stage, a big group gets away, consisting of Morras (Onda), Salazar (Colombia), Cabedo (Orbea), Alarcon (Barbot), Fernández (Caja Rural), Mestre (Tavira), Mayer (NSP), Marino (Saur) and Albert Timmer (Skil).
Alarcon is the first to cross the line of the Intermediate sprint.
img29.imageshack.us/img29/5144/2is1.jpg
The breakaway's advantage is over 5 minutes at the foot of today's 1st climb, the Puerto de Polopes. Fernández reaches the summit in first place.

A big group has to let go the bunch, including Monster's Niki Terpstra, Marcel Kittel and Romain Zingle.
img651.imageshack.us/img651/5306/4lossen.jpg
Fernandez also reaches the summit of the 2nd climb, the Puerto de Albanol, in first place and already secures himself of the polkadot jersey!
img706.imageshack.us/img706/6321/5kotm2.jpg
The peloton, already shrunken to 35 cyclists, is about 4 minutes behind the leaders.
img814.imageshack.us/img814/3820/6peloton.jpg
Meanwhile, the breakaway reaches the 3rd KOTM-sprint, where Morras accelerates and is the first on the summit.
img807.imageshack.us/img807/4567/7kotm3.jpg
The riders from Monster Energy - Ford face a Spanish-Portuguese pact: none of the other teams even tend to help in chasing the breakaway. The Movistar and Euskaltel-guys only pass the summit in the front, probably because of the photographers. I even talked to their DS's to help us, but strangely, no one could understand and speak English anymore... With 30 kilometres to go, almost all downhill, our loss still was a little less than 3 minutes.
img854.imageshack.us/img854/8454/8peloton.jpg
Because of the acceleration of Morras at the last climb, the breakaway got split and 4 riders would battle for the stage win, and the leaders jersey: Morras, Cabedo, Salazar and Fernandez.
img594.imageshack.us/img594/9360/9kopgroep.jpg
None of them was a good sprinter, so it would be the one with the most energy left after ths though stage. It was Orbea's Cabedo who took the win, and knew where the camera was on the finishline.
img683.imageshack.us/img683/4175/10cabedo.jpg
The peloton crossed the line 1'44 behind the leaders.

Mmm, what to say... We faced a Iberian-pact that we couldn't overwin. Apparently, the SPanish World Tour-teams rather saw the smaller Iberian continental teams win, than that they helped us to battle for the stage and GC win. DId we had to start the chase earlier? Now you can say yes, but possibly our riders got exhausted and the Movistar / Euskaltel would have taken profit of it.
Well, the GC is not lost, but will be difficult. With 4 riders about 1'40 back, the situation is clear: attack and exhaust the 4 leaders and their teammates. But will it be easy?

great for the stage 2 but you could include the king of mountain and sprint points as it goes. So when there is king of mountain points being given out then sprint points then king of mountain again, put it like this:

King of Mountain 1:
Spoiler
1st: Cadel Evans
2nd: Alberto Contador
3rd: Andy Schleck

Sprint 1:
Spoiler
1st: Mark Cavendish
2nd: Phillipe Gilbert
3rd: Jose Joaquin Rojas

King of Mountain 2:
Spoiler
1st: Frank Schleck
2nd: Cadel Evans
3rd: Alberto Contador

That way us followers can keep up with our favourite riders even if there not in the top 5 (or how ever many you put in the end standings) and we can also keep up with the race. Smile
sorry if you feel im hassling you! im just trying to make a great story even better! and the way youre going now i think its working! Pfft

oh and make sure you make the amount of riders in each standing the same. If you want to put 5 riders in the points standings, you have to do the same for KOM and youngster. Keep it up Smile

Nice suggestion mattie I also like to see that sort of stuff

Thx for your comments, appreciate the feedback. I'm still working on the best way to do it, but don't wanna overkill. Think I'll take the first 3 of a KOTM or intermediate sprint, because I feel that more information can be too much. When the stage is done, think I'll give the top 5 in the points and KOTM, no more than that (and of course the best of Monster in the ranking).
Mattie, you give me a lot of work to do Wink

yea. i understand. well i dont really but im gonna start a story when i get the game so ill know what your talking bout soon!
yea the first three of the points in-race is good. yea! personally i think 10 is best to put at the end but hey if u wanna put 5 im fine with that Smile
and yea i hope thats sorta a good thing! haha! Pfft

3rd stage of the Vuelta de Andalucia, 167km from Otura to Jaén, 4 KOTM-sprints, with a lot of climbing, and the last 30km downhill.
img193.imageshack.us/img193/5509/1route.jpg

Tactics meeting: attack, attack and attack!!

We first worked hard to keep the peloton together before the first Intermediate sprint, and with succes, Sagan took the win and 6 seconds. 2nd came Bilbao (Euskaltel) and 3rd Pasamontes (Movistar)
img12.imageshack.us/img12/5144/2is1.jpg

He The 3 got a small gap, but for some strange reason Topsport Vlaanderen and CC brought it all together.
img26.imageshack.us/img26/8669/3tsv.jpg

Then a small group with Thomas de Gendt, Sousa (Barrot), Joseph (Topsport), Bilbao again, Lastras (Movistar) and Paez (Colombia) gave it a go.
img200.imageshack.us/img200/8725/4degendt.jpg
They didn't get a big gap, because NSP's Markus Fothen was chasing them, helped by Wallays (Topsport, although his teammate was up front Frown).
img190.imageshack.us/img190/5476/5fothen.jpg
De Gendt was the first to reach the summit of the Puerto de los Blancares, in front of Bilbao and Lastras, just seconds before the bunch reeled them in.
img225.imageshack.us/img225/8591/6kotm1.jpg
After the descent, it was time for the 2nd Intermediate sprint, and again Sagan got the 6 bonus seconds! 2nd Urtasun (Euskaltal), 3rd Kiendys (CCC).
img594.imageshack.us/img594/3725/7is2.jpg.

Then it was time for Finnish Matti Helminen (Landbouwkrediet) who jumped away and took the 2nd KOTM-sprint (2nd Pasamontes, 3rd Bagues). In the ascend, Monster's Laurent Didier (9th in the GC, + 1'56) made the jump to the Fin, and the 2 drove away slowly. Didier reached the summit of the Cuestade de los Gallardos in first place. Verona (Burgos) got 3rd.
img97.imageshack.us/img97/8283/9kotm3.jpg

With 50km to go, the advantage was 2 minutes, so Didier was in virtual yellow. Because of that, the Orbea-team finally decided not to profit from the others and started the chase.
img823.imageshack.us/img823/710/10orbea.jpg

Because of that, the numbers 3 and 4 in the GC (Salazar and Morras in the green jersey) got dropped by the bunch.
img600.imageshack.us/img600/2869/11lossen3en4.jpg

Didier fastened his pace going up the Alto de Fuensanta, the last KOTM of today and he dropped the exhausted Fin. The Orbea's had blown their muscles, so the lead at the summit was already 3'44 (and Verona came in 3rd again)!
img830.imageshack.us/img830/8639/12kotm4.jpg

Then the Spanish teams helped each other again: Caja Rural (with 2nd placed Fernández) and Euskaltel started to chase our poor Luxembourg rider.
img707.imageshack.us/img707/5596/13cjreneus.jpg

The leading advantage became smaller: 2'40 with 20km, 2'28 with 15km, 2'20 with 10km, 2'06 with 5km and only 1 minute with the last ascending 2.5km (gradients of 3 to 5%) to go.
img35.imageshack.us/img35/7845/15voet.jpg

With 2km to go it was CCC's Marek Rutkiewicz who had a fierce attack, followed by Jerome Baugnies (Topsport), Sammy Sanchez (Euskaltel) and Marzio Bruseghin (Movistar). Thomas de Gendt and Peter Sagan tried everything to follow them.
img155.imageshack.us/img155/8682/16aanval.jpg

With his last energy left, Didier managed to stay up front and took the win. An outstanding achievement, unfortunately not enough for the GC-lead (well, he's in 3rd now).
img850.imageshack.us/img850/7179/17finish.jpg

Didier could go the podium and celebrate the 3rd victory for our team. Rutkiewicz got 2nd, Bruseghin 3d, Sagan 7th and De Gendt 11th.

We didn't succeed in our goal to overtake the lead in the GC. But Didier showed some great effort with the stage win and the 3rd place in the GC. Of course, we're very happy with that! The focus on the last 2 stages, will be in stage wins only with Kittel and Sagan in the mass sprint. We don´t expect any changes in the GC anymore.
