Crashes don't fit my idea of a good race. And apart from the crashes, nothing's happened.

Gilbert takes the stage, Cadel yellow. Looking at who fought for the win in 2008 on Super Besse, Hushovd's days in yellow are over.

Hushovd said himself that he was 100 % convinced that he wouldn't keep the jersey. |

Absolutely unexpected in the first week of a TdF, eh?

So for tomorrow I have these names pulled out of my hat:
Alexandre Vinokourov
Sylvain Chavanel
Andreas Klöden
Rigoberto Uran
Jerome Pineau
Philippe Gilbert
Geraint Thomas
I believe the stage could be to hard for Gilbert, I don't know if Chavanel is alright, and Pineau hasn't gotten enough time on the leaders to be given a big gap... So in the end it could be Vino, but I hope it will be Pineau or Chavanel..

Best first week of TDF in long time. 'nough said.
Sky should go into break tomorrow , I fancy Gerrans chances tomorrow if he did get into break.

And yet still boring. Indeed that says enough.

Blood thirsty people around ? The more crashes, the best first week. Weird...
I agree 100% with isso here, crashes don't make actual interest. It creates some chaos, but it's quite a regretable way to create interest.
I don't believe Chavanel will be in a break tomorrow, he still needs to recover, I wouldn't exepect anything from him before the first rest day, bar managing to finish inside the time limits and not fall badly again. |

Indeed, worst first week ever I'd say. Crashes are no fun and splits caused by crashes are extremely annoying.
Plus half of the GC contendors are either out or at least injured and can't perform at their 100% shape anymore.
Every year you hope for an epic battle in the mountains between fit GC contenders.
And every year the first week of the Tour is a lottery and when you finally get to the mountains there are only 2/3/4 really fit people left. The rest are battered and bruised and have no chance really unless they are inhuman supertalents with unbelievable recovery.
I think many of this can be prevented if you put a mountainstage or 2 in the first week of the Tour. Then many of the GC is already made up and the peloton is far less nervous.
But no, the direction has to make flat stages and finishes with 100 corners on small roads.
Hill finishes are good, as long as they come on the right moment. Now, they really don't |

Thats just the Tour. Have to be that way imo. Thats a part of being a Tour de France winner, that you can avoid crashes and situations like that.
I dont think there is anything wrong with the roads, imo the same thing would have happen if the course was on a motorway. |

I agree with you, but given how Le Tour traverses France, I'd probably say a long time trial would be more suitable. It creates time gaps, but also means the mountains should be more aggressive.
And as to the first week being exciting - ignoring the crashes (which have made this week pretty rubbish), it's been a slightly more exciting Tour than in other recent editions, but that's not saying much.

Yeah, apart from a Corsican depart, a TT would probably be simpler. And would make the climbers more aggressive by the time we reached the mountains.

They should have just made the TTT longer IMO. If it had been 40-50 km, the time gaps would have been much bigger.
Other than that, I agree with ruben's post. |
