Hey guys, thanks for all the help with answering my questions. I found a local bike shop I did not even know existed! I'm most likely going to purchase a brand new Trek 1.5 for under $1,000!
Just make sure it's the right size. Usually a LBS will specially customize the bike to your requirements. Good luck in securing the bike and have fun riding

Well I picked up the new Trek 1.5 today, and I took it for about 13-14 miles. I absolutely love it!! I did that ride in 30 minutes, the bike soars with ease! I am definitely going to be riding quite a bit. I figured i averaged 26 mph on the ride today (relatively flat with some slightly uphill sections lasting for a bit). Is that decent for a beginner? |

Congratulations on your new bike
26 mph is a pretty good speed for a begginer i must say, regardless it was relatively flat and considering the hills.
Good effort

Either you're the next cycling big thing from USA, either you rode 13-14 km in 30 minutes, not miles. |

Haha Aquarius, my father's estimation was a tad off. I just drove the route and it is 11.2 miles with about 1.75 of uphill sections total. So that is over 22 mph, a bit off 26 Is that still a decent ride for my first time? |

That's still damn fast for a first ride if you were riding on your own, but it's much more human.
Are yo used to performing well at running for example, or other physical sports (swimming, etc.) ? |

Haha Wacko and Aquarius, I am a decent cross country runner. I have ran a 3 mile race in 17:15 and a 5k in 18:02. Nothing impressive, but decent. I wasn't pushing that first ride either. I might try a quicker ride tomorrow! |

I dunno what it's like in the US but if you're serious and haven't made a mistake then get down to a local time-trial and give it a go, because you could be really good.

That's quick.
I did 8 miles in half an hour on a mountain bike a few weeks back. I was quite happy with that considering it was constantly up and down hills, but then it turned out I had done it with a fractured foot. I wonder what I could do with a road bike and if I was fully fit. |

Hey guys, I was just thinking about a ride i did last summer on my Diamondback mountain bike. I rode up a local hill just to see how quick I could do it. I used veloroutes.org to get the elevation change of the climb. I attached it in this post, but I don't know if you guys can see it? I did this ride in 10 minutes and a few seconds. If you can see the elevation chart of the ride, is that a decent climb?

roturn, how do i get it attached so you can see it? Sorry I'm a noob when it comes to this stuff
Edit: Nevermind I got it! By the way, the distance is in miles and the elevation is in feet.

Sorry to hijack the thread, but would anyone be able to give me advice? I'm trying to find a road bike for a reasonable price - so I can convince my parents it isn't a waste of money - and I wonder if anyone could give me any suggestions?

Buying a low class Trek or Giant is always a good deal. I bought a Giant Defy ltd last year (with Shimano Sora, carbon front fork) for under €600 and haven't regret one minute of it! |

jph, although I am a beginner, I would recommend a Trek. I really love my 1.5, and I have put 150+ miles on it in the first week or so. I got it for just over $1000 U.S. I took it for about a 23 mile ride tonight and did it in 70 minutes. It was a nice comfortable pace, and I just want to keep on riding! |

jph, I have relatives in Europe that ride Scott and call it a super bike. It will make you feel like Cavendish who also rides that brand for HTC. But if you can get you hands on a Trek 1 series than go for it. It all depends on your budget and what's available to you. Go check out your local bike shop and get back to us on what's available. I also recommend Cannondale but I might be a bit biased.
@golance123 is that climb attached have values in kilometer and meters or miles and feet. Try mapping it through mapmyride, it will also give you gradients.
