Santos Tour Down Under
Pro Tour
Stage 1
Mawson Lakes – Angaston
A easy and flat stage with should suite our young sprinters Matthews and Vermeltfoort. After winning the Australian Road Race Championships Michael is living on a cloud so we hoped for the best. The last few kilometers he took the wheel of Greipel (OLO) and with just 800 meter to go he jumped…
Results:
1 Michael Matthews Rabobank Cycling Team 3h21'44
2 André Greipel Omega Pharma - Lotto s.t.
3 Tyler Farrar Team Garmin - Cervélo s.t.
Stage 2
Tailem Bend – Mannum
A more difficult stage then yesterday but since Matthews has not really got problems with a hilly terrain we did helped the other teams to let it be a mass sprint again.
But Matthews had a bit of an off day an became 10th. A really strong performance of Farnese rider Emanuele Vona here, while Farrar (GAR) was by far the strongest sprinter today.
Results:
1 Tyler Farrar Team Garmin - Cervélo 3h32'49
2 André Greipel Omega Pharma - Lotto s.t.
3 Emanuele Vona Farnese Vini - Neri Sottoli s.t.
The last 50k of today stage is really hard so some riders will have problems following the peloton. Like the days before we try to position Matthews as well as we can for the sprint.
But a mass crash ruined everything today, a lot of riders on the ground, more than 60 riders lost 1’32” today so Matthews could also forget his General Classification.
While it was Geraint Thomas who won! Very strong of the young talented track rider.
Results:
1 Geraint Thomas Sky ProCycling 3h05'41
2 Tomas Vaitkus Pro Team Astana s.t.
3 Daniele Bennati Leopard Trek s.t.
Stage 4
Norwood – Strathalbyn
Maybe some more luck today, the last part was also a bit easier than yesterday. We just hope for a good sprint and that all the riders stay at their bikes! But Matthews looks a bit depressed, he isn’t able to get in front when the sprint starts so Coen is able to try his luck today, he did and became 8th. A real nice performance at the start of the season.
Finally Greipel (OLO) won today! 4 stages, 4 winners…
Results:
1 André Greipel Omega Pharma - Lotto 3h03'39
2 Tyler Farrar Team Garmin - Cervélo s.t.
3 Alessandro Petacchi Lampre - ISD s.t.
Stage 5
McLaren Vale – Willunga
The stage with the famous Willunga hill, we didn’t know if Matthews was able to get to the finish line so we stayed in front with Tjallingii who felt really good today.
He even tried to get away with les then 10k to the finish, but it became not more than 30 seconds. Peraud (AG2R) was very strong today but also a bit stupid…
For sure he was going to win and the last 500 meter he started to wave at the crowd and cheers as much as he could. But he could better race to the finish line, now he was 2 seconds short in the General Classification.
Results:
1 Jean-Christophe Peraud AG2R La Mondiale 3h09'52
2 Samuel Dumoulin Cofidis, le crédit en ligne + 1'46
3 Marko Kump Geox - TMC s.t.
Stage 6
Adelaide – Adelaide
Last and annoying stage of the Santos Tour Down Under, a lot of corners and some dangerous obstacles. We set everything on Vermeltfoort while Matthews wasn’t feeling well, he got out of energy very early, maybe that he will be better next year while he learned more and will also be a little bit stronger!
Finally someone wins two stages! But it was Coen who did really great, if the line was 500 meter further he would have won!
Results:
1 Tyler Farrar Team Garmin - Cervélo 2h21'10
2 Coen Vermeltfoort Rabobank Cycling Team s.t.
3 Francisco José Ventoso Movistar Team s.t.
General
1 André Greipel Omega Pharma - Lotto 18h36'15

4 Coen Vermeltfoort Rabobank Cycling Team + 20
5 Daniele Bennati Leopard Trek s.t.
6 Tomas Vaitkus Pro Team Astana s.t.
7 Matthew Goss HTC - Highroad s.t.
8 Alessandro Petacchi Lampre - ISD + 21
9 Davide Viganò Leopard Trek + 24
10 Bert Grabsch HTC - Highroad + 25
14 Maarten Tjallingii Rabobank Cycling Team s.t.

And so I ask you: Why do you put it here? This is a story which has nothing to do with gilbert.
Tombola: Very nice presentation... Keep it up. Just one question, why did you start all over again?

I explained in my old story, the computer went stuck and I installed everything as new.
@Giles23: This is 2011, the races that Gilbert won didn't happen yet!

Prologue
Cultural Village ITT
Only 2 kilometers of prologue so it could be anybody’s game today!
Jos van Emden was one of the favorite but was a little bit disappointing with a 21st place.
It was Freire who drove the best time for our team, which was exactly the same as the time Sebastian set. Both 3 seconds behind winner Sieberg (OLO).
Results:
1 Marcel Sieberg Omega Pharma - Lotto 3'14
2 Olivier Kaisen Omega Pharma - Lotto + 2
3 Greg Henderson Sky ProCycling s.t.
Stage 1
Dukhan - Al Khor Corniche
Like all the stages in Qatar it was completely fat. So we could test our sprint train with Van Emden, Leezer, Brown and Freire! While Greipel, Petacchi and Swift are the favorites for every stage here.
Here comes the Rabo train! Clement sets the pace so that Freire will be in an easy position when the mass sprint starts.
Leezer and Brown did a really great job at the end, in the beginning it were Van Emden and Clement who pulled the train forward and a lot of sprinters were already too far behind.
Results:
1 Óscar Freire Rabobank Cycling Team 3h22'00
2 Graeme Brown Rabobank Cycling Team s.t.
3 Jürgen Roelandts Omega Pharma - Lotto s.t.
Stage 2
Camel Race Track - Doha Golf Club
Also a flat stage, also the same favorites but is Freire able to beat them again!?
Although the train went perfect again it was Lorenzetto (AST) who surprised everybody on the other side of the road. Freire was able to get back in his wheel but could never overtake him unfortunately.
Results:
1 Mirco Lorenzetto Pro Team Astana 2h56'18
2 Óscar Freire Rabobank Cycling Team s.t.
3 Greg Henderson Sky ProCycling s.t.
Stage 3
Al Wakra – Mesaieed
Another exotic and warm stage, a real nice country to be in at the beginning of the year! Because Freire was now leading the GC we decided to send Langeveld in the breakaway who lost a lot of time yesterday. This because he went to the car to get some water and then the pack started to split.
Sebastian joining the breakaway. With 70k to go they had a lead of 6’40” but the pack wasn’t interested in chasing.
So that was the next problem, with 20k to go the gap was still 3’20” while Rabobank already started to chase because no one else would. Since Langeveld was 8 minutes behind and all the others only 1 we didn’t one them to stay in front. Although it would have been another stage victory because Langeveld didn’t do anything the whole stage and when some riders attacked with 13k to he could easily follow.
But with 4k to go the pack got the breakaway back and we could still cheer! It was Freire who took the victory thank to a magnificent lead out of Brown. Graeme had to do it all by himself because most of the other riders helped chasing the breakaway.
Results:
1 Óscar Freire Rabobank Cycling Team 3h22'52
2 Ben Swift Sky ProCycling s.t.
3 Mirco Lorenzetto Pro Team Astana s.t.
Stage 4
West Bay Lagoon - Al Kharaitiyat
Again a boring stage, some riders got away but we started to chase ride away so they never got further then 3’00. With 60k to go some other started to help so it was an easy day for us.
A good lead out again but this time it was Rasmussen (HTC) who surprised us, damn! A few meters further and Freire had won another stage today. But for the GC he did a great job again.
Results:
1 Alex Rasmussen HTC - Highroad 3h25'55
2 Óscar Freire Rabobank Cycling Team s.t.
3 Borut Božic Vacansoleil - DCM Pro Cycling Team s.t.
Stage 5
Sealine Beach Resort - Doha Corniche
The last day in this country where it’s always a very nice temperature to do your “training” before the real season starts. Let’s see what Freire could do today, if the pack stays together then the GC is for us. But will Óscar win another stage…
Just a second too late, a real shame because it would be a great end of the 6 days in Qatar, but still we are glad to have our first GC win of this year. You can see that Mirko was lucky as he reacts to Freire...
Results:
Stage:
1 Mirco Lorenzetto Pro Team Astana 2h45'06

Great results and great reports. Just a thing: It would be great if you could post your team for the race in front of the first report. For example I didn't know at once who this "Sebastian" was that you mentioned in the prologue report. But apart from that, it's really great!

Damn cunego59, you don't know who Sebastian is!
In RL he was 2nd at the Omloop het Nieuwsblad after Flecha in 2010 and this year he won! And Flecha was second by the way... You can also find the stats of the riders on the first page at the "Rider" section.
But essecially for you I will do a short preview about the upcoming race
P.S; Dominik Nerz was really active in Qatar, he was 2 times in the break of the day!

He was also 5th at Ronde which I found quite impressive, great breakthrough year for him
Great presentation, reports and results to summarise it shortly Continue and don't get distracetd by PCM 11 as I want this story to go all the way

Vuelta á Andalucia
Rider Preview
Leader:
Lars Boom
Will try end win the General Classification, because of the prologue he could create a small gap to other competitors. The rest of the stages aren’t that hard if we look at hills and climbs. Lars his shape is getting better every day because the classics are coming up.
Sprinter:
Tom Leezer
That’s relative because there is no real sprinters stages here, so most likely a nice training ride in the sun. That’s the reason I don’t have a real lead out man like in Qatar.
Free Roll:
Juan Manuel Garate
Will need this stage race as a training for the upcoming Tirreno-Adriatico
Matti Breschel
Like Juan Manuel, Matti is here for some training. His goals are San Remo and several cobble classics.
Michael Matthews
Could surprise here, is able to follow the pack on a hilly course and has a good sprint.
Helper:
Tom Jelte Slagter
Rick Flens
Coen Vermeltfoort
@cunego59Is this better?

1. I said I didn't know at once! I just had to think a little what Sebastian rides for Rabobank before I knew it was Langeveld. I'm not that unknowing
2. Yep, that is indeed much better But you for sure don't need to do such a presentation for all the races, just a screenshot of your team would be nice (just imho).

A short but hard prologue in the beginning of the season, riders first take a descent until the first time intermediate. After a small flat part the climb will start with percentages up to 17%, if that is not enough, the last 500 meter of the climb is paved with cobbles. Excellent for a rider as Lars Boom.
Roman Kreuziger (AST) set the first time of ???? he did a great job because the time looked almost unbeatable while there were a lot of other riders who still had to start.
The first rider behind Kreuziger was Michael Matthews, he set a really good time for his standard and was second when he passed the finish line. The difference was 16 seconds.
Teammate of Kreuziger Andrey Grivko (AST) was the first who was able to came close. At the intermediate it was only 2 seconds but Kreuziger was a bit better in the last part, just 8 seconds behind.
Lars Boom was up now, he had the same intermediate time as Grivko and was only 2 seconds behind. But the last part should suite the young Dutch man a bit more because of the cobbles. Giving the full 100% he beat the time of Kreuziger with 11 seconds.
Last but not least was Breschel, who also did a very great job. The last hill with the cobble part really turned out well for him too, in a great time of 12’20” he became second behind his teammate.
Results:
1 Lars Boom Rabobank Cycling Team 12’13”
2 Matti Breschel Rabobank Cycling Team + 7
3 Roman Kreuziger Pro Team Astana + 12
Some very tough climbs today, although the terrain the puncher sprinters are the most favorite here. Breschel, is one of the top favorites along with the Astana riders Vaitkus and Bazayev.
The peloton sets a easy pace while two riders of less know teams are trying to break away from the pack.
Garate takes some points at the top of a few climbs but Deignan (TSH), Anton (EUS) and Cobo (GEO) are giving it their all for the points. Those three will fight for the KoM in Andalucia.
A bunch sprint with 90 riders, Astana had a very strong train with riders as Vaitkus, Vinokourov and Gasparotto. It was Bazayev who won, just in front Breschel and Bazayev’s lead out Vaitkus.
Results:
1 Assan Bazayev Pro Team Astana 5h10'46
2 Matti Breschel Rabobank Cycling Team s.t.
3 Tomas Vaitkus Pro Team Astana s.t.
Another hilly terrain but this time no mayor difficulties so again it would be a stage for the sprinters.
A big group of riders got away and with 60k they still had a gap of 9’08”. Izagirri (EUS) was the best placest rider but some riders could also be the new GC leader if they sprint in the top 3.
With 20k to go there gap was now 13’40 so the poker began, there were a few attacks but no rider could make a big gap. So they started the sprint together and it was young rider Fernández (OND) who took the win. Because he was only a few seconds behind Izagirre he is also the new GC leader.
The peloton arrived 10’49 later were it was Vaitkus (AST) who won the sprint in front of Breschel.
Results:
1 Delio Fernández Onda 4h30'15
2 Rubén Martínez Caja Rural s.t.
3 Blazej Janiaczyk CCC Polsat Polkowice s.t.
Stage 3
La Guardia de Jaén - Córdoba
A stage like the others but maybe even more easier. The GC was screwed for a lot of teams so this could be a real open stage today, so we decided to send a rider with the breakaway.
First attacker of the day, Coen Vermeltfoort! Trying to get away from the pack and gain some extra training for the upcoming openings weekend in Belgium!
They had a gap of 5’36” with less than 50k to go so it could work. Some riders in this group, Popovych (TSH), Smolen (CCC), Felline (GEO), Mestre (TVP), Sousa (BAR) and Barbosa (LAA).
With 20k to go the gap is now 7’00” to the pack, so some riders are trying their luck to get away. Vermeltfoort is waiting in the back and decided to wait and let others close the gap to deliver a good sprint, but we are a bit afraid of some other riders like Popovych. He didn’t help the whole day!
And that brought him a easy win today, no one was able to keep up when Yaroslav jumped to the otherside of the road and took a few bicycle lengths on the rest of the group. Coen did the best he could but ended up 4th, just missed the podium today. The small hills were a little bit too much since he is not a bad sprinter.
Results:
1 Yaroslav Popovych Team RadioShack 4h08'04
2 Jonathan Castroviejo Euskaltel - Euskadi s.t.
3 Tomasz Smolen CCC Polsat Polkowice s.t.
Stage 4
Córdoba - Antequera
A stage which was not so hard, but the finish is. A uphill section for the stronger riders in the peloton, favorites are Kreuziger, Anton and Vinokourov while they are the strongest hilly racers in Andalucia.
Matthews did a great lead out for Breschel, but with 3k to go there were still 4 riders out in front, Blanco (GEO), Kittel (SKS), Marczynski (CCC) and Zingle (COF).
But it was Kreuziger (AST) who attacked the last 2,5k and got further and further away in the sprint, Blanco could just stay in front of the peloton while Breschel became 3rd thanks to a great support of Matthews.
Results:
1 Roman Kreuziger Pro Team Astana 4h04'30
2 David Blanco Geox - TMC s.t.
3 Matti Breschel Rabobank Cycling Team + 19
General
1 Delio Fernández Onda 18h09'50
2 Rubén Martínez Caja Rural + 13
3 Gorka Izagirre Euskaltel - Euskadi + 18
4 Mickaël Buffaz Cofidis, le crédit en ligne + 19

A great week for the Portuguese team Onda, winning a stage races in a field like this should really boost their spirit. We had a few nice results but after the first stage we hoped that we could take the GC win with Boom or Breschel. But because we were the only team who wanted to chase the break in the second stage we decided to let the breakaway go, the season is still very long!
