Omlopp Het Niuewsblad - Preview
It's time for the first classic of the season, Omloop Het Nieuwsblad. Omloop is the first of the 10 classics as well.
The couse fron Gent to Gent isn't to decesive or hard but in the beginnig of the season when everbody is looking for the right shape and the weather conditions are unstable it becomes hard. The sun could shine but the it could also be 3 degrees and rain.
However, this classic is one of the most unpredictable. Philippe have won here twice after breaking away. In 2011 Sebastian LAngeveld won over Juan Antonio Flecha after an breakaway in heavy rain. And last year, 2012, Greg van Avermaet won the sprint in a group of 20th riders. Flecha was 2nd...
Langeveld beats Flecha in the sprint. This year Langeveld rides for Sky and Flecha is back in Rabobank. Will they fight about the victory once again?
 Philippes has won here twice, in 2006 and 2008. Can he do the same thing again, 5 years after his last victory?

 Omloop Het Niuewsblad - 200 kms
The weather in Gent is awful. It's 3° C and it rains. Tyhe only thing that light ups Gent this morning is a traffic light. The light is green and says: GO!
It will be a hard the for the cyclist. In the end everyone will be wet and cold, even Pozzato. The hardest man will win today, could it be Philippe?
Damien Monier (Cofidis) makes the first attack this morning. It's an hard day for the Cofidis rider. The bunch catch him fast and he finishes 150th at the end of the day.
After several of attempts, Fredrik Willems (Omaga Pharma) breaks away from the bunch. He will be in the front the whole day.
Willems enters the first cobbles. He is looking strong and still got a small gap to another breakaway group of 10 cyclists.
About 5 minutes later the bunch enter the first cobbles. Katusha is in the front as expected. They are probably the strongest team today together with us (Omega Pharma)
The group with 10 cyclist is catching Willems in the front but in the next hill he will ride away from them again. He was the strongest rider in the breakaway for sure.
Fabian Cancellara (Leopard) makes an early attack but Gilbert follows him easily. However, Fabin discovers that it's to early and waits for the bunch.
Quickstep is now doing the work together with Cancellara's Leopard team. Van Summeren, Gilbert and Adam Hansen (all Omega Pharma) looks strong!
Finally the bunch is catching Willems. A very tired Willems drop the bunch instantly and finishes 62th.
With only two cobble selections left it's time for Gilbert to make his move. The bunch is still big and no chanche for Gilbert to beat sprinters like Boonen and Pozzato. However, Boonen (Quickstep) is the only one who are able to follow Gilbert.
Gilbert and Boonen cooperates in the front. Matti Breschel (Katusha) is 20s behind and the back is 1'20 behind. This looks good!
The other favourites realise the danger in letting Boonen and Gilbert go and attacks. Flecha, Pozzato, Chavanel and Devolder are among thoose who attacks but no Cancellara.
Boonen leads Gilbert over the last cobbles. It looks like Boonen is the strongest today but Gilbert is a good fighter!
Finally Cancellara moves! Maybe the big suisse is suffering due the low tempature?
The gap is still big with 5kms to go. Gilbert and Boonen will probably hold off but what about Breschel?
Boonen waits and waits to start the sprint. In the last corner, with 1.5 kms left, he eventually accelerates. Gilbert is tired but he remembers Paris - Tours in 2009 when he bet Boonen in the sprint.
Nevertheless, Boonen is the strongest today and wins. Gilber is 2nd. "I was to tired in the end. The race was hard and so the weather. Congrats to Boonen but I will have my revenge later this season! What about Ronde van Vlaanderen?"
Breschel takes the 3rd behind the duo but the biggest suprise today is Adam Hansen who takes the 4th."This was the day of my life" says Hansen after the finish.

Comments: Boonen and Breschel was good bets while Van Avermaet was a real stinker! I am impresse by tsmoha's bet on Davis since Davis was 7th ahead of a rider like Cancellara. Also, Gilbert did better than expected, which is nice!

Great 2nd for Gilbert, though he had no chance against Boonen in final sprint. But nice move, wouldn't expect an attack to be succesfull here against such great cobblers Well done. And congrats to jt1109 for winning the bet (I'm glad Davis finished within Top-10 )

That was a good result for Lotto and Gilbert. The win was nearly there, but Boonen is faster than Philippe, and there was anything he could do there. And I guessed the winner, not that bad. |

The second coobled classic of the season is Kuurne - Bruxelles - Kuurne. It's only 4 selectios of "pavé" and they are far away from the finish so if Gilbert want the win he has to attack, since many sprinters are able to stay with the pack. However, Kuurne - Bruxelles - Kuurne is not one of our 10 classics, so no betting.
Philippe Info:
Philippe's Comment: "I am in better shape than expected. It's early into the season so 84pts is ok but I am a little bit tired after yesterday's ride at Omloop Het Nieuwsblad."
Philippe's young and talented team-mate Jens Debusschere attacks from the start today. He is an strong cobble rider and the best one in the breakaway. He rides away and after the first cobbled selection he is in a solo lead.
On the last cobble selection it's time for Philippe to attack. He makes a good attack and gains 2'00 minutes in a row. However, it seems like it's to early for the winning move and no other rider seems intersted to join Philippe so it looks like a bad move.
Philippe reaches Debusschere in the front and they tries to cooperate but it doesn't helps. Leopard works hard for Cancellara and Landbouwkrediet
works as well. With 20 kms to go, Philippe is caught.
Leopard continues to pace hard and my sprinters, Greipel and Goddaert struggles. Philippe and van Summeren are the only Omega Pharma riders who have power left fo an sprint. Philippe makes an small lead-out for van Summeren but "Summie" fails and can't even pass Philippe. Philippe is 11th and "Summie" is 14th.
Katusha makes an double while Cancellara is 4th and missses the podium with some inches. Another interessting thing is that Philippe beats Boonen in the sprint today.
