The results were much more disappointing, with Adam our highest finisher 94th. Our next race is important for us as we take to the Shay Elliot Memorial across Ireland’s Wicklow Mountains.

Shay Elliot Memorial

This Irish one day starts and finishes in Bray, south of Dublin. It has two tough climbs near the end of the race alongside many smaller rises.

i284.photobucket.com/albums/ll27/wackojackohighcliffe/PCM0001-105.jpg

Tom Southam was raring to go as he builds form for his season goal, the Chas Messenger, and made his escape from the bunch early on.

i284.photobucket.com/albums/ll27/wackojackohighcliffe/PCM0003-88.jpg

Still, he couldn’t make enough headway and a stalemate ensued. But we weren’t going to miss the break after the disaster at the Reservoir so when Peter Williams jumped away, Hamish Haynes was on his tail. Their lead peaked at over 7 minutes but was dropping severly as they hit the first of the two climbs.

i284.photobucket.com/albums/ll27/wackojackohighcliffe/PCM0004-84.jpg

Hamish dropped Williams on the second ascent but was caught by the splitting bunch at the other side. We were very well-represented in the front group by then.

i284.photobucket.com/albums/ll27/wackojackohighcliffe/PCM0005-82.jpg

On a small rise with not long left, the attacks started to go and Jon Dayus responded.

i284.photobucket.com/albums/ll27/wackojackohighcliffe/PCM0006-71.jpg

However, there were still enough teams up front to pull them back. Then, as we reached 3km to go, Dave Clarke was sent on the offensive.

i284.photobucket.com/albums/ll27/wackojackohighcliffe/PCM0007-59.jpg

He was caught by another rider but by the start of the sprint they were being caught themselves.

i284.photobucket.com/albums/ll27/wackojackohighcliffe/PCM0008-50.jpg

In the sprint Tom Southam led our teams move down the left. Could we avenge the Reservoir?

i284.photobucket.com/albums/ll27/wackojackohighcliffe/PCM0009-51.jpg

Oh yes we could as Tom Southam led Jon Dayus home, while the rest of our riders packed the top ten.

True redemption and our season picks back up. We’re in Britain next week for the East Midlands Cicle Classic, England’s answer to Paris – Roubaix, where Hamish Haynes will lead.

East Midlands Cicle Classic

The course criss-crosses the lanes and dirt farm tracks around Melton Mowbray and Oakham in Leicestershire and Rutland. We are unsure how our riders will go over the rough surfaces of this race but Robin Sharman won in 2006 (although it was a lesser race back then).

i284.photobucket.com/albums/ll27/wackojackohighcliffe/PCM0001-106.jpg

Jon Dayus was our man for the break and attacked 3 times to get away from the bunch.

i284.photobucket.com/albums/ll27/wackojackohighcliffe/PCM0002-94.jpg

He finally made it away into a 10-man group with lots of teams represented – it could well stay clear.

i284.photobucket.com/albums/ll27/wackojackohighcliffe/PCM0003-89.jpg

With 25km of the race left Mark Cassidy of the An Post team attacked the group and Jon, who’d been having a sneaky rest, followed.

i284.photobucket.com/albums/ll27/wackojackohighcliffe/PCM0004-85.jpg

He went straight past a blowing Cassidy to take a strong solo lead.

i284.photobucket.com/albums/ll27/wackojackohighcliffe/PCM0005-83.jpg

Behind, Hamish had followed Dan Lloyd, Dean Downing, Keiran Page and a Norwegian to link up with the chasing group. Hamish was able to sit on as Jon held his large gap to the line for a great win!

i284.photobucket.com/albums/ll27/wackojackohighcliffe/PCM0007-60.jpg

A rested Hamish couldn’t beat Dean Downing to the line but still managed to take the bottom step of the podium as our other riders followed in.

Chas Messenger 2-Day

This stage race takes in a prologue and an easy road stage on the first day followed by a slightly more rolling stage on the second day. Tom Southam has peaked for this race and Hamish Haynes is also in a glut of form, ready for the Lincoln Grand Prix.

Stage 1

The prologue finishes on top of a minor climb and could well decide the outcome of the race, even though it’s only 5km long. (I whacked it up to extreme just for this – the rest is on hard).

Tom should have done very well but he didn’t have the best time of things, coming in 15th. Hamish Haynes was our highest finisher in 6th. But we were pretty sure from the start who would win the stage.

Stage 2

This stage has some very minor bumps and seems likely to come down to a sprint finish. Haynes is our man for the finish.

i284.photobucket.com/albums/ll27/wackojackohighcliffe/PCM0003-90.jpg

Dave Clarke covered the break, slipping away with Athanasiades and Muller’s team-mate Cassidy.

i284.photobucket.com/albums/ll27/wackojackohighcliffe/PCM0005-84.jpg

Cassidy wouldn’t work with the other two so Clarke gave up midway through the stage and dropped back to the bunch. It was a good call as the others were already dropped by the time the sprint started.

i284.photobucket.com/albums/ll27/wackojackohighcliffe/PCM0006-72.jpg

Haynes wasn’t brilliantly placed but picked his way through to an encouraging 3rd position behind winner Ciaran Power.

Stage 3

There were a couple of little climbs each lap which could potentially act as a springboard for an attack. Tom Southam would be one of those attacking, needing to make up time after a disappointing start.

i284.photobucket.com/albums/ll27/wackojackohighcliffe/PCM0009-52.jpg

The break didn’t even go so on the climb on the final lap, with 13km left, Southam launched himself away from the peloton.

i284.photobucket.com/albums/ll27/wackojackohighcliffe/PCM0010-37.jpg

He made it away solo and it looked like he could stay ahead of the pack, although it would be touch-and-go up until the line. As the sprint began he didn’t have a huge gap.

i284.photobucket.com/albums/ll27/wackojackohighcliffe/PCM0011-35.jpg

And sadly he got overhauled by the dominant Ciaran Power with the line in sight. The Irishman went on to cross the line first.

i284.photobucket.com/albums/ll27/wackojackohighcliffe/PCM0012-31.jpg

Hamish Haynes was our best rider at 6th in GC but it wasn’t a wholly successful tour for us. Hopefully things will pick up at the Lincoln GP next.

Lincoln Grand Prix

This is one of Britain’s most popular races as many Lincoln-ians line the steep cobbled climb (pink due to my stage editing skills) of Michaelgate through the old town.

i284.photobucket.com/albums/ll27/wackojackohighcliffe/PCM0001-107.jpg

Hamish Haynes is in absolute flying form for this and was our outright leader (although Adam Blythe also had a protected role). Tom Southam covered the break.

i284.photobucket.com/albums/ll27/wackojackohighcliffe/PCM0002-96.jpg

Despite it being a large and evenly represented group it didn’t make much headway and with 3 laps left they were back in the fold. Things were getting edgy as they approached the penultimate ascent of Michaelgate. Russel Downing took off up the hill and Hamish Haynes followed.

i284.photobucket.com/albums/ll27/wackojackohighcliffe/PCM0003-91.jpg

The two got away with Dan Lloyd and worked well together.

i284.photobucket.com/albums/ll27/wackojackohighcliffe/PCM0004-86.jpg

Hamish dropped to the back with a couple of km left as it became apparent that they would stay clear. As Dan Lloyd began to lead the group to the left-hand side of the road, Hamish attacked hard down the right.

i284.photobucket.com/albums/ll27/wackojackohighcliffe/PCM0005-85.jpg

He got a gap from the two and was hurtling along as he hit the cobbles. He could have bonked as the slopes steepened but thankfully his legs held out and he took a great victory.

i284.photobucket.com/albums/ll27/wackojackohighcliffe/PCM0006-73.jpg

This is by far Hamish’s biggest victory since winning the Nationals in 2006 and was compounded by high placings from the rest of our team.

FBD Insurance Ras

This 8-day race is steeped in tradition, with stories of the ‘men of the Ras’. Hamish Haynes is for the sprints and still in good form while Jon Dayus is gunning for the overall.

Stage 1

It opens with a flat stage to Ballinamore.

i284.photobucket.com/albums/ll27/wackojackohighcliffe/PCM0001-108.jpg

It came down to a sprint and Russel Downing was first across the line with Hamish in 2nd.

Stage 2

Another flat stage followed, Claremorris its destination.

i284.photobucket.com/albums/ll27/wackojackohighcliffe/PCM0004-87.jpg

In an aggressive chase of the breakaway by Pinarello the bunch split up and a Konica Minolta led a move away in the last 5km. Two held off the bunch and Hichem Chabane won.

i284.photobucket.com/albums/ll27/wackojackohighcliffe/PCM0005-86.jpg

Hamish Haynes came in 6th.

Stage 3

Stage 3 heads into the hills and a couple of climbs near the end could be the launchpad for a successful attack.

i284.photobucket.com/albums/ll27/wackojackohighcliffe/PCM0006-74.jpg

And it was there that Jon Dayus tried to break free.

i284.photobucket.com/albums/ll27/wackojackohighcliffe/PCM0007-61.jpg

He got a small gap but couldn’t make it stick and it was another sprint finish, Hamish picking up a handy 3rd behind Irishman David O’Loughlin.

Stage 4

More hills were on the agenda for this stage from Corofin to Tralee.

i284.photobucket.com/albums/ll27/wackojackohighcliffe/PCM0001-109.jpg

They weren’t enough to split the bunch up and it was a bunch dash to the line, won by Aaron Tuckerman with Hamish in 3rd.

The time bonus was enough to give Hamish the leaders jersey (on the same time as Hichem Chabane).

This story is like one of those illegally downloaded movies you get and you press play and find out that its being played in x1.7 speed instead of the regular x1 and that you will just have to end up buying the movie afterall like a good citizen would.

(Except the story is not half quality or anything like that, in fact its quite good.)

Stage 5

The last of this bunch of hilly stages has just one major climb but it is close to the finish.

i284.photobucket.com/albums/ll27/wackojackohighcliffe/PCM0004-88.jpg

After the break was caught on the footslopes of the climb, Kristian House was amongst the attackers.

i284.photobucket.com/albums/ll27/wackojackohighcliffe/PCM0005-87.jpg

He got a good gap and managed to just hold off the charging bunch.

Hamish extended his gap on GC by 4 seconds.

Stage 6

An easier, shorter, flatter day out to Clonmel would surely be another bunch sprint.

i284.photobucket.com/albums/ll27/wackojackohighcliffe/PCM0008-54.jpg

And it was, as Peter McDonald crossed the line ahead of Hamish in 3rd.

Sadly Hamish lost the leaders jersey by 4 seconds to McDonald.

Stage 7

Another flat jaunt to Roundwood where Hamish would look for a time bonuse to reclaim the leader’s jersey.

i284.photobucket.com/albums/ll27/wackojackohighcliffe/PCM0001-110.jpg

The sprint was rather boisterous and Hamish had no far, going shoulder-to-shoulder with Kristian House all the way to the line, losing out on 3rd by less than a wheel while Michael Cody won the stage.

Sadly Jon Dayus crashed quite badly in with 4km left the finishing straight and lost nearly 3 minutes.

Stage 8

The final stage headed to Skerries before taking a couple of loops through the Black Hills. Hamish was going all-out for the sprint while (with Jon Dayus demoted) Tom Southam might follow any serious moves.

i284.photobucket.com/albums/ll27/wackojackohighcliffe/PCM0003-94.jpg

It became apparent quite soon that Jon Dayus’ injuries were too serious for him to continue and as he was dropped he got into the broomwagon.
As we hit the hills around Skerries the peloton was peppered with attacks. None seemed too serious but they were causing some serious changes of pace. Thankfully, Hamish was dealing well with these but yellow jersey Peter McDonald was not and was hanging around at the back of the group on the final run-in to Skerries.

The finishing straight was very undulating and David O’Loughlin got a good run at it on the downhill section. He was clear and Hamish was following, needing to finish on the podium to take the overall on top of the points jersey he already had. O’Loughlin took his second stage but where was Hamish?

i284.photobucket.com/albums/ll27/wackojackohighcliffe/PCM0004-89.jpg

There, in 2nd! And with McDonald not even in the top 10 it was the overall honours for Hamish.

Rank Name Team Time
1 David O'Loughlin Pezula Racing 3h38'03
2 Hamish Haynes Litespeed Racing Team s.t.
3 Russel Downing Pinarello Racing Team s.t.
4 Hichem Chabane Team Konica Minolta - Bizhub s.t.
5 Aaron Tuckerman Jelly Belly Cycling Team s.t.
6 Ben Greenwood Rapha - Condor - Recycling.co.uk s.t.
7 Adam Armstrong Pezula Racing s.t.
8 Vasilis Adamou A-Style - Somn s.t.
9 Pieter Botha Team Konica Minolta - Bizhub s.t.
10 Matt Rice Jelly Belly Cycling Team s.t.

The GC went our way alongside the points jersey as Hamish continued on his great run of form. This result may prove the merits of consistency over brilliance we don’t really care. Victory!
