Tour Down Under Stage 2
Gawler - Hahndorf
Today we will see a stage for all the sprinters. I don`t think that a group can win again. The only little hill is too far away from the finish and not a problem at all.
So after the last stage there is still a question mark about the fitness level of most of the sprinters. Just McEwen, Hunter, Davis and Petacchi seems to be in a average shape. But especially HTC-Columbia and Radioshack can`t be happy with yesterdays result. Cavendish is not the guy for 5th places and Greipel and Goss weren`t seen a single time. RadioShacks new sprint train Leezer-Steegmanns-Hushovd is not on their maximum yet, but I am quite sure that we can expect a lot of them. Hushovd was the dominator in all flat stages of the Vuelta.
Start in Gawler. Selvaggi in the leader jersey after yesterdays surprise.
Again the first attack directly after the start is also the group of the day. Today we will see Knaven, Furlan, Goesinnen and Loddo quite often.
After a very bad year for Milram and the downgrade into ProContinental status, they were able to hold all team captains, so we can expect quite a lot of them this year. Also Skil-Shimano have ambitions this year with the engagement of Ricco and Kiserlovski. So their participating here is not a very big surprise.
Bad luck for Saxobank and Sky. Their leader and GC contender Breschel and Hagen crashed but nothing seems to be broken luckily. They had no problems to stay in the pack.
Loddo wins the mountain sprint on the "Checker Hill Road". Kirienka, Haussler and Txurruka fight for the last points, The Caisse rider wrapped up the sprint out of the peloton.
Today the sprinter teams were always attentive and on the 20km flag everything was back together. So it looks like the expected mass sprint.
13km to the line the 2nd intermediate sprint in Mt Torrens is won by Cavendish ahead of McEwen and Greipel. HTC looks much stronger today, so what can we expect of them?
The sprint trains are coming to the front. Our Garmin train works perfect with Vansummeren pulling Hunter and unfortunately also Cavendish and McEwen. All other HTC guys aren`t there again. Also RadioShack and Saxobank are seen with their trains for Hushovd and JJ Haedo.
But they all had no chance. Hunter celebrates his first win in 2011. In last years edition he reached top3 twice but he wasn`t able to win.
But again a disappointing stage for RadioShack without even a men in the Top10. Cavendish reached the 7th today, but I am quite sure that we will see of them much more in the mid season.
Hunter with the first win after last years Amgen California Tour, which was his only stage win in 2010.
JJ Haedo finished a strong Saxobank performance on the 2nd.
Napolitano with his first podium for his new Lampre team.

If anyone has critics or things to improve, just tell me. It`s the first story I write.
Tour Down Under Stage 3
Unley - Stirling
Todays stage is a bit more difficult with some more hills and an uphill sprint.
So it will be harder for Hunter or McEwen to repeat their win. Today we might see which guys are able to fight for the overall. Today is a good opportunity for Bobridge to go for the KoM. Also we don`t wanna lose the leader jersey.
Great day for cycling today. Nice weather and a leading Hunter in Unley.
First attack with Bobridge and Hushovd after 11km but they never had a big gap wo the Peloton. There was also a 2nd group in front of the pack.
So Bobridge and the group was caught again before the hill even started.
So we changed our plans and gave Trent Lowe the opportunity to fight for the KoM instead of Bobridge after he signalized us that he doesn`t feel very well. So Bobridge isn`t able to repeat last years successful January with the National Road Championship and the mountain jersey.
30 km later the 2nd sprint and still no new attacks. So some Sprinter were fighting for the points.
Easy day for our helpers. They could set a very low pace over the whole race. Neo rider Brent Rowe and Matthew Wilson did a good job today.
Sprint preparation and our Garmin train isn`t coming as far as in the last 2 stages. It`s more steep than it looked like, so the hilly sprinter are positioned perfect. O`Grady with Breschel in the back, Ventoso and Visconti have the best positions.
Matti Breschel with the best sprint today. He started a long sprint without anyone giving a real chance to beat him. Tony Martin is a little bit surprising there. But in general the best hill riders were in front today, but Hunter did also a great job with another top10.
Also we realized quite late that Cameron Meyer is leading the U25 ranking because of the better positions.

The only thing that I think would make this story even better is if you remove the circles around the riders when you take screenshots.
Otherways, this is a great story.

I will delete the circles starting with stage 5. With the next stage I also delete the interface. But it`s not perfect with this day. Hope it`s better with new stages then. |

Tour Down Under Stage 4
Norwood - Goolwa
Todays stage is a sprinter stage again. There is a hill in the beginning where Lowe will try to win the KoM. So we will hold the pack together and prevent breakaways up to this point. In the end Hunter can show his sprint skills and the good shape again. McEwen and Hunter won the two flat stages so far. These 2 are my favourites for this stage. As we have seen yesterday, RadioShack gave Steegmanns the confidence with less success. Hushovd also tried it in a break on day 2 but they don`t have much luck now. In 2010 there was almost never a RadioShack rider in the final on flat stages, so this year it is a challenge for them to repeat Hushovd`s acchievments.
Start in Norwood.
First attacks after a few km. Now Rowe, Wilson and Bobridge have to work hard to hold all riders together in the first 30km.
All Garmin rider in the front controlling the race. Bobridge with a incredibly strong performance today.
2km to the KoM sprint, Lowe accelerates and overtakes the last survivors.
Now it`s sure. Tomorrow Trent Lowe will have the KoM jersey. He knows that he can thank Bobridge for his effort where Rowe and Wilson had already problems to go the high pace on the hilly territory.
Just a few km later the break stays after we stopped the high pace.
Today Goddaert, Gourov, Urtasun, Rooijakkers, Lancaster, Mata, Scognamiglio, Sentjens, R.Feillu, Gavazzi and Kaisen with a small gap.
The group was too strong to let a bigger gap to them. So we controlled them with always 2-3min and had good help by Saxobank.
34km to go and about 2`30 for the group. So everything looks like a mass sprint again.
13,5km before the finish line we caught the group and started the sprint preparation. Meyer-Vansummeren-Hunter.
3km to go and our train with a nice position. But surprisingly there are HTC riders in front, too. Greipel-Goss-Cavendish with a great train. Can Cavendish win his first race in 2011?
Also Saxobank working well for Breschel and the Shack for Steegmanns.
Nobody was able to follow Cavendish`s explosive acceleration and so he had a small gap to McEwen and Hunter.
But it`s McEwen again who celebrates his second win in his country. Cavendish was too long in the wind and finished 2nd. Hunter is again on the podium ahead of Matthew Goss. This day was much better for HTC than the other flat sprints and another good result after Martin`s 2nd yesterday.

We reached all our goals today.
Tomorrow will be a hard stage where we try to counter all attacks with Vansummeren to get a Top10 result. If the pace isn`t that high we do everything to help Hunter to keep a good position. Last year the first 5 were puncheurs attacking on Willunga Hill, this year the real puncheurs are missing, so a top10 result with Hunter is also possible.
P.S. Gregory Rast (RadioShack) had to abandon after todays stage with a fractured vertebrate and will miss until end of March. Bad for him that he won`t be fit for his season peak in the cobbled classics. So a very important helper for Hushovd can`t help him this season.

Tour Down Under Stage 5
Snapper Point - Willunga
Today the hardest stage is on the program. The first 90km are quite flat but then the riders must climb the "Willunga Hill" twice. This hill can decide the whole race. Last year Vinokourov, Kroon and Chavanel attacked here and gave the sprinters no chance. We can expect many attacks today, too but without a very good puncheur sprinters like Breschel, who showed a strong performance on day 3, will also have a good chance.
We must also take care of Tony Martin (HTC-Columbia), Giovanni Visconti (ISD-Neri) and Alessandro Ballan (Lampre), which seem to be in a quite good shape so early this season.
Our plan is to hold the yellow jersey with Hunter in a slower race and counter-attack on the Hill with Vansummeren.
With 32pts Trent Lowe wants to win the KoM jersey, but today there are again two KoM sprints with 16pts each. So it is still not safe yet.
Willunga Hill: 3km with 7,6% in average
Will the sprinters be able to hold contact to the front here?
Start in Snapper Point. Our 3 jerseys together. Trent Lowe (KoM), Robert Hunter (Leader), Cameron Meyer (Young). Can we defend this jerseys today?
First attack. De Kort (Skil-Shimano), Ventoso (RadioShack), Coyot (Caisse), Delage (Omega), Seb. Chavanel (FDJ), L.Mate (Androni) will be todays group. We have to take care of Coyot as he was already in another group and is ranked with 4 KoM points.
Liquigas and Ag2R immediately go for the lead but without a very high pace. We haven`t seen a lot of both teams so far. Riblon (Ag2R) and the duo Willems and Bennati for Liquigas must feel strong today.
20km later Saxobank (Breschel), HTC-Columbia (Martin) and Garmin are doing a high pace to take care of a favourite win today.
75km - 6`20 for the group.
The break already climbed the Willunga Hill the first time, when the pack is still below. Delage wins ahead of de Kort and Mate. Nice news for Lowe that Coyot and Chavanel hav already little problems to stay in the first group.
Also the big pack is on the descent. The climb splitted it into 2 big pieces but they will come together again. Except of Lowe and Vansummeren all of our riders had some problems during the climb but just Wilson and Rowe felt back into 2nd group.
The 2nd climb onto the Willunga Hill starts now. If there are too many attacks it will be hard for Hunter to counter them, as he had already problems the last time with a lower speed.
While de Kort won the 2nd sprint and Lowe safed his jersey and Coyot and Chavanel felt back between both groups, the first attacks are starting.
The first rider is Giovanni Visconti and Breschel is following him.
Hunter with very big problems now. We decide spontaneously that Vansummeren will have better chances as Tony Martin attacked.
The favourites quickly created a gap. Martin, Vansummeren, Lowe, Ballan and Seb. Chavanel after falling back. Boasson Hagen and Haussler are still trying to join. No Breschel or Visconti here, so their teams doing the pace now. Bad for Vansummeren and his group.
Flame Rouge and unfortunately our tactic didn`t work today. Delage, de Kort, Mate and Ventoso still in front altough a lot of teams were working very hard to catch them. Also the favourites have no longer a big gap.
Therefore Hunter was able to use the descent for coming back into the big group and having a good position now.
But he won`t defend his jersey, after the break really wins this stage with 50s ahead of us.
Delage still can`t believe this great win so early in the season. He will take the stage and overall win.
The favourite group sprints for the 5th and Tony Martin will get it, but the peloton was already there to avoid time differences.
It might have been better today to help Robert Hunter with Vansummeren today. Maybe he could have defended his jersey then. So Hunter loses some positions today.

So we were able to defend 2 of 3 jerseys but retrospective we could also have defended the leader jersey. But our tactic didn`t tallied today.
Tomorow we have a short 90km flat stage. Maybe Hunter can bring us a good result once more again, but normally there is no chance to mix the overall again.

Tour Down Under Stage 6
Adelaide City Council Street Circuit
Todays stage is quite short and flat. So everybody expects a mass sprint.
Today McEwen and Hunter will fight for the sprinter jersey. McEwen leads by 2 points, but Hunter will be highly motivated to bring something home after yesterdays bad luck. So I expect both of them in the first row in the end.
Start in Adelaide. Delage with a big smile on his face. He didn`t sleep much last night but his legs feel perfect with the leader jersey. Most important today is to avoid crashes.
First attack. Theo Bos (Cervelo) is followed by Matthew Wilson (Garmin), who can ride on his own today after all the hard work during this race.
The other riders are Claude (Caisse), Castroviejo (Euskaltel). In the background Sutton (Sky), Gatto (ISD) and Isasi (Euskaltel) try to join the break.
But the peloton won`t allow a successful break today. They are always a few seconds behind.
(Unfortunately the game crashed during the replay. So next 2-3 screenshots haven`t been made.)
After the peloton caught the break Arnaud Gerard (Ag2R) tried his luck with a solo attack. Later Kevin Van Impe (Quickstep) will follow him.
But both of them felt back into the pack 30km to the line.
Garmin with a good position on the 5km mark, but also Greipel-Cavendish- McEwen and Ventoso-Steegmans have perfect positions.
The sprint starts and Steegmans is the first spritner in the wind. Behind him McEwen and Hunter.
Can Hunter get the jersey back?
Steegmann with a surprising win. After his performance so far, nobody had him on his list. Behind him McEwen and Hunter in a photo finish. Everybody was waiting for the officials. The 2nd will also win the sprinter jersey. After a few minutes Radio Tour announced Robert Hunter as the 2nd and McEwen 3rd.
In our team bus we started to cheer. From outside you could hear a loud swearing with an Australian accent.
We lost the leader jersey but won 3 jerseys in the first race of this season. So we can be very happy with the January 2011.

(So a wildcard team wins a bit surprising the team ranking)
Lots of surprises in this years edition. Selvaggi in the Ochre jersey after stage 1 and a 2nd breakaway decides over the overall in the end. The puncheurs without a chance this year in comparison to 2010.
Skil-Shimano with very offensive riding in Down Under so they really deserved the good results.
After a weak performance of RadioShack in the first 4 stages they won the last stage with Steegmans and the 4th overall with Ventoso. So a strong comeback of them.
Good Bye from Australia.
Next races will be the "Challenge Ciclista a Mallorca" and the "Tour of Qatar".

Now in the end of January we found some new co-sponsors.
Of course they expect a bit after last season.
With Exxon Mobil and Felt we have 2 of the biggest American sponsors.
We were a little bit surprised about an good offer of Fulcrum, a little sister of Campagnolo, because there is no Italian in our team. Later they told us that they liked our riding during the Giro d`Italia last year. (3rd VandeVelde, Points:Farrar) and they hope we can tie in with last season.
As we told them that we wan`t to concentrate more on the Tour this year but we will also have a strong squad at the Giro with Daniel Martin, Cameron Meyer, Robert Hunter and David Millar, we compromised to ride as aggressive as possible and fight for stage wins.
With Maaskant, Vansummeren and Boom we should be able to reach the cobbled goals this season, even if we had some problems in Paris Roubaix last year without a top10 result.
With Luis Leon Sanchez we will try to get a top10 in the Tour de Suisse.
Felt asked us to send some Americans to this race, too and so we decided to send with Danielson, Zabriskie and Tyler Farrar a very strong squad.
Last year we failed with winning the green jersey in the tour, but there Farrar was already exhausted after the Giro. This year he will concentrate on this goal but it`s probably the hardest goal next to Paris Roubaix.
Our last goal is a top10 in the Vuelta a Espana. Last year we reached it with Ryder Hesjedal. This year our new Spanish co captain Luis Leon Sanchez will try his luck. Our other new Spain Rojas Gil will try to et some stage wins, but if there is a dominating rider like Hushovd in 2010 Vuelta this will be very hard. They are supported by Fischer, Pate and Kessiakoff. |

Summary for January
With double champ Cameron Meyer and surprising winner Mickael Delage begun the season. Later in January Giovanni Visconti (ISD-Neri) won two stages and the overall of the "Giro Ciclistico della provincia di Reggio Calabria" ahead of Bennati (+1`09/Liquigas-Doimo) and Dario Cataldo (+2`24/Quickstep)
The "Grand Prix Cycliste la Marseillaise" was decided by Jose Ivan Gutierrez (Caisse d`Epargne). He won the sprint of a 6 men group in front of Jonathan Hivert (Saur-Sojasun) and Markus Eibegger (Footon-Servetto)
Monthly awards
No big surprise that these 2 riders were nominated. Delage leads also the Pro Tour ranking. Cameron Meyer won`t forget this January for sure with the double championship, 13th Down Under and 1st U25 there.

February
Our race schedule is in the first place a build-up for the big races in March and April. But nevertheless we want to be successful here. The next races will be the Mallorca Challenge and Tour of Qatar.
Normally we planned to prepare in Qatar and Oman, but Luis Leaon Sanchez asked us to participate on Mallorca and in the Tour du Haut Var.
Last year he was in top 5 of both races and he think this is the best preparation for his first goal Paris-Nice, what he won in 2010.
So we changed our mind and let him drive his favourite races.
Later in February the first cobbles expect us and last year we had a good impression of this races, so we will take part again.
Ryder Hesjedal will start his season in the Suisse, but his main goal will be a top 10 in this years Tour. |

Wow, a breakaway rider winning the TdU. Isn't that always happening?

This race is held since 2002 and is part of the UCI Asia Tour. It concludes a short TTT and 5 totally flat stages with lots of wind. So normally a sprinter wins here because of all the bonus seconds.
Last year we were very successful here with 2 stage wins and the overall by Farrar and the victory in the starting TTT.
Result in 2010:
1 Tyler Farrar Garmin-Transitions
2 Danilo Wyss BMC
3 Jacopo Guarnieri Liquigas-Doimo
P: Tyler Farrar
U25: Danilo Wyss
We take part with a very strong team. Tyler Farrar wants to defend his title.
He is supported by some time trial specialists and Martijn Maaskant, who will be a important guide in the wind.
We would be quite disappointed if we can`t win at least one stage and play a good role in the overall.

Because there are two races at the same time I will write them by turns and add both presentations into this post.
Since 1992 the elite of cycling is coming onto Mallorca for nice profiles and a beautiful environment.
This stage race is officially a challenge with 5 stand alone races: Trofeo Palma, Trofeo Cala Millor, Trofeo Inca, Trofeo Deià, Trofeo Magaluf - Palmanova.
First two are quite flat, the other 3 hilly.
But there is also a unofficial list with the results of all 5 races as played in the following story.
Result in 2010:
1 Juan Jose Cobo Acebo Caisse d`Epargne
2 Alexandre Vinokourov Astana
3 Denis Menchov Rabobank
P: Alexandre Vinokourov Astana
KoM: Juan Jose Cobo Acebo Caisse d`Epargne
U23: Jan Bakelants Omega Pharma-Lotto
It`s the debut in the Garmin jersey for our 3 newcomer. But we have trust in them and so they are our captains for this race.
LL Sanchez did a 4th place in 2010 and wants on the podium this year.
Rojas will be the man for the first two flat stages to get some nice results.
Lars Boom can drive on his own as long as LL Sanchez has still another helper on his side.
But especially Peterson and David Millar should be able to ride a long time on a high level to help their leaders.

Thanks for the postings.
@FreitasPCM
Never had this before. Normally good hilly riders attack in the 2nd hill and get the overall in front of some sprinters.
But in January and February lots of results are very weird without a good fitness.
Next stage report probably tomorrow or later this evening.
Have to get up at 6 for university tomorrow
