Tour of Qatar

The Tour of Qatar is a favorite race of many riders in the peloton. Escaping the harsh European weather in February, the Tour of Qatar would begin with a short team time trial. Following the first stage would be five pan flat stages, favoring any strong sprinters. While hilly terrain won't have to be navigated, strong winds will certainly play a factor and teams aiming for sprint victories will need to have their main men well protected and placed correctly.

Three big sprinters, Tom Boonen (Quick·Step), Alessandro Petacchi (Lampre Farnese - Vini), and Daniele Bennati (Liquigas - Doimo) have showed up to the Middle East and are clearly the class of the sprinters. Boonen has won this race in its past two editions, and three times all together, making him the early favorite. Other riders of note are Enrico Rossi (Ceramica Flaminia), Kenny Van Hummel (Skil - Shimano) and Graeme Brown (Rabbobank).

Jimmy Casper will open his season leading the Saur-Sojasun team. Competing against the likes of Boonen, Petacchi, and Bennati will be a good early-season test of his legs. In order to help Casper, Saur-Sojasun is bringing along most of his sprint train with Stéphane Poulhiès, Romain Matheou, and main lead out man Jimmy Engoulvent making the journey.

Stage 1: Doha: 8.1km

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Saur-Sojasun/48.jpg

A short team time-trial through the Qatar capital of Doha would kick things off. The riders would begin at the Doha Golf Club and travel clockwise around the West Bay Lagoon. The time trialing abilities of the Saur-Sojasun team left a lot to be desired, and the goal would be to limit the losses.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Saur-Sojasun/49.jpg
The Saur-Sojasun team crosses a bridge along the course.

At the first time check, Saur-Sojasun found themselves down 28" on then leader Ceramica Flaminia. The team tried to push themselves a bit harder in the second half and would finish the course in 11'45". With 5 teams left to finish, Saur-Sojasun found themselves in last.

When Fly V Australia crossed the line 7 seconds better, Saur-Sojasun resigned themselves to finishing last. Rabobank would take the stage, just ahead of Dutch team Skil - Shimano.

Tour of Qatar: Stage 2: Al Zubarah - Doha Golf Club: 139.5km

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Saur-Sojasun/50.jpg

The second stage of the Tour of Qatar should certainly be one for the sprinters. With three tiny rises in the beginning, the peloton will ride on pan flat roads until the finish. Steven Kruijswijk (Rabobank) will wear the leader's jersey.

A break of 11 riders would form over the early climbs of the day. The break consisted of Tomasz Lisowicz (CCC Polstat Polkowice), Edoardo Girardi (Ceramica Flaminia), Marino Palandri (Adria Mobil), André Schulze (PSK Whirlpool - Author), Johan Coenen (Topsport Vlaanderen - Mercator), Oleksandr Martynenko (ISD Continental Team), Aitor Pérez Arrieta (Footon - Servetto), Dimitry Ignatiev (Itera - Katusha), Damjan Stankovic (CDC - Cavaliere), Diego Caccia (ISD - Neri), and Koen De Kort (Skil - Shimano).

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Saur-Sojasun/51.jpg
The break moving through the desert.

At the first sprint point, the break had a 5'04" lead. With Rabobank working at the front, the lead had come down to 3'49" at the second point. The light winds on the day would not affect the chase, and the break was rather easily caught with 17km remaining.

Saur-Sojasun and the rest of the field began to prepare for the mass sprint finish.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Saur-Sojasun/52.jpg
Saur-Sojasun's sprint train with Jimmy Casper at the end.

Stéphane Poulhiès pulled the Saur-Sojasun train forward, and gave the team a great pull, as he would pull off the front with 3.2km remaining. At this point, Casper was up in the front of the group with Tom Boonen (Quick·Step), Fabio Sabatini (Liquigas - Doimo), and Enrico Rossi (Ceramica Flaminia). Alessandro Petacchi (Lampre - Farnese Vini) and Daniele Bennati (Liquigas - Doimo) were conspicuously missing.

Romain Matheou worked hard and with 2.3km, it was down to just Casper and his lead-out man, Jimmy Engoulvent. As Engoulvent put his head down to sprint, Casper looked back and saw Boonen sitting up, as well as Petacchi and Bennati not sprinting. While he thought this was strange, he concentrated on holding Engoulvent's wheel.

With a little over 1km remaining, Sabatini made his move.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Saur-Sojasun/53.jpg
Sabatini tries to move around Casper and Engoulvent.

But Sabatini moved to early, and with 800km remaining, Casper shot out and blasted by the Italian. Engoulvent had set up his team captain perfectly, and Casper would easily take the stage win.

In a somewhat weak sprinter's field, Boonen came in 12th, Bennati in 18th, and Petacchi in 26th.

Tour of Qatar: Stage 3: Camel Race Track - Qatar Foundation: 135.2km

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Saur-Sojasun/55.jpg

Another flat stage, the third stage of the Tour of Qatar should again see a sprint finish. There are small climbs at the end of stage that could see some adventurous riders launch an attack. Saur-Sojasun will be looking to keep things together and set Jimmy Casper up for another good sprint.

8.9km into the race, a breakaway formed, this time including a Saur-Sojasun rider, Cyril Bessy. He was joined by Simon Clarke (ISD - Neri), František Kloucek (PSK Whirlpool - Author), Albert Timmer (Skil - Shimano), Dmitry Kosyakov (Itera - Katusha), Davide Torosantucci (CDC - Cavaliere), and Yuriy Agarkov (ISD Continental Team).

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Saur-Sojasun/56.jpg
The break moves along the highway with skyscrapers in the background.

A group of 4 chasers tried to bridge the gap. These riders were Zachary Davies (Fly V Australia), Gabor Fejes (Tecnofilm - Betonexpressz 2000), Sébastien Delfosse (Landbouwkrediet), and Alessandro Maserati (Ceramica Flaminia). They were able to successfully reach the breakaway shortly after the first sprint to form a group of 11 riders.

This was an impressive feat, as the wind was blowing extremely hard across the roads. The gusts of wind remained constant around 65km/h. Feeling the peloton might be broken up, Saur-Sojasun moved all of its riders in the peloton up to the front.

The break would go through the second sprint with an advantage of 3'51", but was clearly starting to struggle in the wind. As Rabobank pulled the peloton along, cracks began to form.

The group first split with 60km remaining, but would come back together shortly. However, it would split more permanently over the first little climb. Only around 35 riders were in the leading group. For Saur-Sojasun, only Laurent Mangel wasn't present, as he was back grabbing bidons for the group when the splits occurred.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Saur-Sojasun/57.jpg
The remnants of the peloton.

The chasing peloton would easily catch the tired breakaway, and while not a mass sprint, there would be no further attacks over the climbs. Saur-Sojasun had done its best to keep Casper out of the wind, but the hard day of racing had tired the French sprinter out. Despite yesterday's results, with Tom Boonen, Alessandro Petacchi, and Daniele Bennati still present, another victory seemed unlikely.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Saur-Sojasun/58.jpg
Casper, in the points' jersey, at the end of his train.

However the wind really prevented Saur-Sojasun from getting into ideal position for the sprint. Casper had to do a lot of work for himself, and only managed a disappointing 19th.

Enrico Rossi would finish incredibly strongly, bursting forth from the peloton with 750m remaining and capture the stage, as well as the overall GC.

It was like sprinting against a brick wall. I was just glad I didn't lose contact with the peloton in all the wind.

janne_837
Your sprint train is amazing. With the wind, a 19th place is not a shame.

Tour of Qatar: Stage 4: Khalifa Stadium - Al Khor Corniche: 139.5km

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Saur-Sojasun/60.jpg

Today's stage begins in the Khalifa International Stadium, known as the National Stadium, located in Doha, Qatar. From here, the peloton will once again travel the flat roads of Qatar. After three stages of little action, it remains to be seen whether the trio of Boonen, Petacchi, and Bennati will contend the sprint finishes.

The peloton kept up a fast pace until the first sprint point, resulting in no breakaway ever forming. Jimmy Casper moved to the front in order to contest the sprint, but ended up finishing in 4th, out of the points. Fabbio Sabatini (Liquigas - Doimo) would take the prize, establishing himself as one of Casper's main rivals.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Saur-Sojasun/61.jpg
Sabatini takes the first sprint.

Casper would be more successful at the second sprint point, taking full points ahead of Sabatini, Angelo Furlan (Lampre - Farnese Vini), and Kristof Goddaert (AG2R La Mondiale).

Casper captures the second sprint point in an effort to retake the points jersey.

The peloton moved without much fuss towards the finishing line, when the teams began to prepare for the impending sprint. Saur-Sojasun's sprint train suffered when Stéphane Poulhiès had to pull off earlier than expected. This meant that Romain Matheou, Jimmy Engoulvent, and ultimately Casper, would all have to work harder.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Saur-Sojasun/63.jpg
Casper starts his sprint in great position, but very far out.

Despite the great efforts of Matheou and especially Engoulvent, the extra work would prove costly, as Casper could not hold his lead. Youngster Marko Kump (Adria - Mobil) would move past on the left, and take the stage. Casper was strong enough to hold onto 2nd place and move back into the points jersey. Once again, Boonen, Petacchi, and Bennati seemed uninterested.

Enrico Rossi would finish in 47th, enough to keep his leader's jersey for another day.

Kump takes one of the biggest wins of his young promising career.

Tour Méditerranéen

While much of the peloton is still enjoying the warmth and sun in Qatar, the Tour Méditerranéen starts in Southern France. Like the Etoile de Bessèges, this is a 5 day stage race. However, it will cover more rugged terrain, with the final stage ending atop Mount Faron in Taulon. With some of the route being covered a month later in Paris-Nice, this will be an important race for some who want to do well there.

Defending champion, Luis Leon Sanchez (Caisse d'Epargne) will not be attempting to defend his title. However, his absence does not diminish the field, which contains many strong contenders, especially from the French teams. Française des Jeux perhaps have the best contender to offer in the form of Christophe Le Mével. Last year, Le Mével surprised many by finishing in 10th in the Tour de France. FDJ also bring climbing talent Rémy Di Gregorio. AG2R are led by John Gadret and Italian Rinaldo Nocentini while Cofidis bring veteran David Moncoutié. Bbox Bouygues Télécom have a strong team with Nicolas Vogondy, Thomas Voeckler, Yuri Trofimov, and Yukiya Arashiro for sprints.

French teams aren't the only ones with strong contenders, with some of the smaller Italian teams bringing their main leaders. Acqua & Sapone bring Giro winner Stefano Garzelli, CarmioOro NGC will be led by controversial Emanuele Sella, and ISD - Neri have Giovanni Visconti.

Saur-Sojasun will bring the same squad from the Etoile de Bessèges with Sébastien Joly and Jonathan Hivert enjoying joint-leadership. With most of the sprint train in Qatar, the team will put little focus on these stages.

Stage 1: Carcassone - Souvain: 98.7km

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Saur-Sojasun/65.jpg

The first stage would be quite short, and should come down to a mass sprint. Starting in the fortified town of Carcassonne, the peloton would move East along the Mediterranean Sea.

The break of the day would be formed by 12 riders, Håkan Nilsson (Continental Team Differdange), Maxime Méderel (Big Mat - Auber 93), Jetse Bol (Rabobank CT), Romain Hardy (Bretagne - Schuller), Chad Beyer (BMC Racing Team), Celestino Pinho (Centro Ciclismo de Loulé - Louletano), Matthieu Boulo (Roubaix Lille Métropole), Freddy Bichot (Bbox Bouygues Télécom), Robert Partridge (Endura Racing), Rafaâ Chtioui (Acqua & Sapone - D'Angelo & Antenucci), Mathieu Drouilly (Landbouwkrediet), and Jesper Asselman (Van Vliet EBH Elshof).

The break rolling through a small French village.

The break would never gain much an advantage, with a maximum of 3 minutes being allowed by the peloton. Several late, desperate attacks were launched by the break, but Chtioui, the last rider caught, was swallowed up by the group with 11.7m remaining.

With no real sprint threat, Saur-Sojasun just made sure their riders were in safe position for the finish.

Heading into the final kilometers, CarmioOro NGC took to the front of the peloton. Jure Kocjan led sprinter sprinter Paride Grillo into prime position.

The last turn sees Grillo in front with Bbox's sprint train coming up from behind.

Arashiro was coming up incredibly fast on Grillo's right, but he left it too late. Grillo would be able to hold off Arashiro and the rest of the peloton to take the win. His first since a car crash almost ended his career.

Tour of Qatar: Stage 5: Al Khor Academy - Al Khor Corniche: 135.2km

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Saur-Sojasun/69.jpg

The second to last stage in Qatar should again come down to a mass sprint. Italian Enrico Rossi (Ceramica Flaminia) still maintains his overall lead, with a 2 second advantage over Albert Timmer (Skil - Shimano).

Unlike yesterday, a break was able to form. It was a small group of riders, none of whom really possessed the strength to carry out the move to the finish. They were Dimitry Ignatiev (Itera - Katusha), Davide D'Angelo (CDC - Cavaliere), Rida Cador (Tecnofilm - Betonexpressz 2000), Oleksandr Sheydyk (ISD Continental Team), and Charles Dionne (Fly V Australia).

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Saur-Sojasun/70.jpg
The break of 5 riders was given a lot of freedom today.

The fact that the peloton did not perceive much of a threat from the break led to the riders being given a lot of freedom. With 65km remaining, the break had a lead of 6'14".

However, at this point, Ceramica Flaminia took to the front and started to organize a chase. The lead steadily came down. The lead was down to 3'00" with 30km left in the stage.

Igantiev launched several desperate attacks with 15km remaining.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Saur-Sojasun/71.jpg
Ignatiev trying to escape the oncoming peloton.

Despite the valiant efforts of the Russian, the peloton would come together with 11.3km remaining.

The pace was high going into the finish and both Stéphane Poulhiès and Romain Matheou had to pull off early. Jimmy Engoulvent worked hard to bring Jimmy Casper up to the front, and when the sprint started, Casper found himself near the front of the peloton on the left. René Mandri (AG2R) was on Casper's wheel. To the right, Kristof Goddaert (AG2R) was leading with Fabio Sabatini (Liquigas - Doimo) and Krzysztof Jezowski (CCC Polsat Polkowice). Aaron Kemps (Fly V Australia) was in the middle with Angelo Furlan (Lampre - Farnese Vini) behind him.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Saur-Sojasun/72.jpg
A lot of sprinters going for the victory.

Casper did not have the finishing strength to take the win. However, where Casper faltered, Sabatini did not. The young Italian took up the slack for teammate Daniele Bennati and would take the stage ahead of Furlan and Kris Boeckmans (Topsport Vlaanderen - Mercator). Casper would finish in 6th.

Tuco the Ugly
Tour Méditerranéen: Stage 2: Peynier - Trets: 158.0km

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Saur-Sojasun/74.jpg

The second stage of the Tour Méditerranéen sees the peloton move into the hills as they make their way east. There are two KOM points on the days stage atop Col de Portes and Col de Valfere. Neither are terribly hard climbs, with average gradients of 2.8% and 4.0% respectively. With the last climb still 20km from the finish, nothing should be decisive today. The priority for Sébastien Joly and Jonathan Hivert will probably just be to stay out of trouble.

As the peloton rolled out of the start, Saur-Sojasun sent Cyril Lemoine out on the attack, hoping to form a breakaway. Only Vyacheslav Kuznetsov (Itera - Katusha) attempted to follow, but didn't reach the French rider.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Saur-Sojasun/75.jpg
Lemoine attacking on his own in the early parts of the stage.

Lemoine would continue on his own, and would reach the base of the Col de Portes alone, 2'37" ahead of the peloton. A group of 7 chasers had formed. Christoph Pfingsten (Van Vliet EBH Elshof), Eduardo Gonzalo (Bretagne - Schuller), Francesco Failli (Acqua & Sapone - D'Angelo & Antenucci), Alexandre Moos (BMC Racing Team), Carlo Scognamiglio (ISD - Neri), and João Cabreira (Centro Ciclismo de Loulé - Louletano) were 1'39"behind Lemoine.

The chase group at the bottom of the Col de Portes with Lemoine in their sights.

However, the chasers would actually break up and lose group to Lemoine on the climb. Lemoine, who worked very hard on the climb, would go over 1'55" ahead of Scognamiglio, Moos, and Gonzalo, and 5'34" ahead of a slow moving peloton. The rest of the chasers were in between.

Cyril Lemoine, who attempted a similar solo ride in the Gran Prix la Marseillaise earlier this month, only to be caught with 2.3km remaining really started to find a rhythm on the Col de Valfere. By the top of the second climb, he was 2'36" ahead of Scognamiglio and Moos, 4'15" ahead of Gonzalo, 4'59" ahead of the remnants of the original chase group, and 6'54" ahead of the peloton.

Lemoine atop the Col de Valfere with a large lead.

With most of the chase cracked, Lemoine settled into his pace, hoping he had calculated his efforts correctly and could reach the finish.

Back in the peloton, the Saur-Sojasun riders were enjoying the day. With a teammate up the road, despite having some of the stronger hilly riders, they found themselves with no responsibility to work. Joly and Hivert sat comfortably and safely in the group.

Later, Lemoine's lead started to come down. 30km to go, and his lead had been halved, as his advantage was only 3'21". Hearing this information on the race radio, Lemoine, who still had energy in reserve, upped his pace in hopes he could hold off the group.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Saur-Sojasun/78.jpg
Lemoine still alone with 20km remaining.

As the stage drew near the end it was unclear whether Lemoine would make it. The important time check would be the 10km to go sign. If his lead was over a minute, he would have a good chance. Under, and he would probably be caught like in Marseillaise.

10km to go, Lemoine's lead remained at 1'28".

Into the final straightaway, Lemoine was able to relax and enjoy his spectacular win. Having ridden solo for nearly 150km, Lemoine would now find himself leading in GC and the KOM competition.

79 riders would finish together behind him with Thomas Voeckler and Yukiya Arashiro taking 2nd and 3rd.

Tour of Qatar: Stage 6: Al Wakra - Doha Corniche: 118.9km

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Saur-Sojasun/80.jpg

The final stage of the Tour Qatar would be much the same as the previous 5. A pan flat stage that should end in a sprint finish. Enrico Rossi remains in the leader's jersey, which he has worn since his victory in Stage 3. Another Italian, Fabio Sabatini now wears the points jersey. Saur-Sojasun rider Jimmy Casper lies 8 points back. The two have arguably been the best sprinters throughout the race.

Hoping to win the points jersey for Casper, Saur-Sojasun kept the pace high up until the one and only intermediate sprint on the day. They succeeded in not allowing a breakaway to form, and as the sprint point approached, Casper was positioned to the front.

However, his sprint was not his best, and he only took 3rd, giving him 2 points. Luckily, Sabatini did not take any points though, coming in 4th. Frédéric Amorison (Landbouwkrediet) would take full points, with Marko Kump (Adria - Mobil) coming in 2nd.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Saur-Sojasun/81.jpg
Amorison takes the sprint. Casper just edges out Sabatini for 3rd.

After this, the pace slackened a bit, allowing 4 riders to get away. Vitaliy Popkov (ISD Continental Team), Andrey Solomennikov (Itera - Katusha), Sep Vanmarcke (Topsport Vlaanderen - Mercator), and Lukasz Bodnar (CCC Polsat Polkowice) made the move.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Saur-Sojasun/82.jpg
A small break with a Soviet feel.

The four riders would never get far from the pack, and were easily reeled in some 13km from the line.

Saur-Sojasun formed their sprint train once again for their leader Casper, and helped set a fast pace for the peloton. With the sprint opening up, it was immediately clear it would be a crowded affair.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Saur-Sojasun/83.jpg
Casper shoulder-to-shoulder with the leaders.

Casper would not have that extra gear needed to take the stage victory. He would have to settle for 2nd place, for the 2nd time in the race. The winner, Australian Graeme Brown from Rabobank. Despite being anonymous for much of the race, given the team time trial in Stage 1, he would overtake Rossi in the GC to win the Tour of Qatar!

Casper would finish 4th overall, and win the points jersey by 2 points, the very amount he took from Sabatini at the last intermediate sprint. Overall, a very good Tour of Qatar for Casper and the Saur-Sojasun team.

Brown takes a close victory.
