Well, its true. The competition didnt include Cavendish (And this year at least, hasnt included Farrar or Petacchi either)
And you cant blame that excuse on people like me. That excuse if anything, started when the majority of the forum were belittling Cavendish's first wins.

Never mind the fact that you are reminding yourself of something completely made up. (Perhaps like some of your Brailsford "quotes" that you have no source for). Its not excuses for why Greipel wins, its disagreements on the claim that Greipel is the 2nd best sprinter in the world.

Ruben, you're quite right there, but I really don't think that Anton is the best climber all over the world minus Contador and Andy Schleck. It looks like it in this moment, but this Vuelta isn't over and the competition there is not the best. Still, this Vuelta isn't over. He can completly blown in the of 2nd or in 3rd week. I see him in this moment on the level like Gesink, as a rider who can win the Vuelta but in the Tour de France only for top 10 place.
Anyway I will wait for the watts, they will say much more.

The only reason I ever responded to this thread was the mere self-righteousness of it.
If you believe Antón deserves 81, then more power to you, because there are results suggesting that level of ability. Only disagreement we have is, that I would've waited to see him against the likes of Contador, Schleck, Menchov, Sammy, when they're all in their best shape (ie. in the Tour). I would like to hear your verdict on riders like Tondo, Bruseghin, Urán, Velits etc. now, if you're so certain of Antón's ability.
Again, i'm perfectly fine with the PCMDaily DB - It produces perfectly realistic results (when the AI doesn't screw things up) |

You can only beat the guys who are there...
We already saw what Anton can do against Contador, Andy Schleck and co in CAstilla y Leon (Contador, Soler, Mosquera) and Fleche Wallone (Andy Schleck, Contador, Evans etc)
I know, not ocmparable races/climbs. But it's hard to explain, you have to go by what you SEE. Not just pure results
In the rare glimpses that Anton was at his top, you can SEE he is at almost the same level in pure climbing ability as Contador and Schleck.
It doesn't matter if the competition consists of Tondo, Bruseghin, Uran or, let's go on a limb and say Evans, Basso and Gesink
He would still drop them.

Contador and Schleck have their best time on TdF. So Anton have to follow them there over 3 weeks. Before he showed it there, I still think they are a step higher.
Anton might be one of the best climbers, maybe even no.3 but before all 3 of them participate at the same race in absolutely top form you`ll never really know and everything is build on speculations. (Just TdF can guarantee top form for Contador and Schleck) |

I think Igor is one of the biggest climbers but you cant compare him with AC or AS because he's not a TdF GC contender. Anton is not a TT specialist... Samuel Sanchez is better, that's why Euskaltel sent him as team leader in the TdF.
May be Contador or Schleck could lose with Igor a stage, but dont forget the targets of each one.
If Vuelta's finishes didn't give bonus time... yesterday Igor probably let Mosquera win... and tried to ride the last 1.5kms together to make more differences.
This sport is so fascinating because we have different specialities and specialist... and we don't have only ONE perfect rider who beats everyone else. (Eddy don't feel bad of my words) |

2008 Vuelta - Contador didn't ride the Tour and was in top condition. Anton, I seem to remember, was one of the few who could stay with Contador on the climbs and was all set for a showdown on the Angliru until he broke his collarbone about 20km before the climb!
I think Anton is a superb climber, but we didn't really see him in top condition in 2009. 2010 though:
2nd in Castilla y Leon
4th in Fleche Wallone
7th in LBL
2 stages and leading the Vuelta
Pretty good season so far! |
