I know a lot of Belgian riders who finished their university studies first (a reason why many of them seldom break through before they are 25 and done with studying).
And I know a lot of Dutch riders who were doing a bachelor or even master study before they quitted in their 2nd/3rd year because of lack of time...
I imagine it's the same in many countries, so I don't think the vast majority of riders is stupid I think it was on FDJeux website at the time, that there was a short presentation of every rider, which included their diplomas.
About the 2/3rd of them didn't have a high school diploma. Most had gone in technical activities, such as gardening, or the lowest levels of mechanics, etc.
I know for a fact Vaugrenard was utter crap at school.
And the same goes for most French pros (even though you can be smart without being a doctor in anything).
As for Moncoutié, one of his cousins used to post on Cyanide forums, at the time I was there too (ages ago ), he sometimes posted MSN chat excerpts. Moncoutié writes crappy French, and he's not smart (his wife was pregnant at the time, and his MSN message was like "D4viD - HE WOONT COM OUTZ LOL !!!!!" (the French version of it)) referring to his soon to be born son. That looked like totally retarded, IMO.
As much as I like the rider, the man seems stupid to me. |

Peleton speeding along nicely, not letting anyone out on a break after 28km. The peleton briefly split with Contador in the front group and Andy Schleck being caught out, but Saxobank brought it all back together. There must be some nasty winds for that to have occurred.
EDIT: It seems Petacchi and Hushovd are trying a break now with 13 riders. Going for that early sprint point before the climbing starts for real today.
EDIT 2: And just like that, they are caught...

1. Hunt
2. Knees
3. Pineau
None of the sprinters. What a let-down. |

Apparently none of the sprinters were in the top 3 at the intermediate sprint. |

And yet both Petacchi and Hushovd got mountain points on the Cat 4. WTF?! |

I've met guys who fancied girls who are 18, but that's a new fetish.

Anyway, the stage.
This is it. Schleck is going to give absolutely everything he has today. There's going to be carnage, and we'll finally find out how he and Contador stand relative to each other.
Meanwhile, the break looks good and I don't think anyone can climb with Voeckler....and he has to drop them because several are better than him in a sprint.

Already Saxo director said that is a very risky and long downhill...
So it looks like they will ride toguether until the end...
I suppose that Schleck will wait for Tourmalet. But I think Samuel should try to put some time on Menchov for the TT. |

If Schleck waits for the Tourmalet, his already small chances will become miniscule.
He'll attack.

It looks really good for the breakaway now, especially for Voeckler.
And soon the climb. The first kms of the climb are really easy, but then it's really, really difficult. I think there will be massive gaps between GC contenders.

The point is tomorrows stage is neutralised by the flat lands after the final climb. Today has to be the day. Waiting for the Tourmalet won't be enough for Andy.

My guess is Sanchez will make the first move, as today fits him better than anyone else with the difficulty of the Bales descent, which will cause Menchov and VdB to follow. If Schleck waits and sits with Contador like yesterday, I agree, he cannot win. However, I think he'll go in that situation. |
