Cycling Brain teasers
lagetcher
Before I saw the answer, I was thinking this could be from any TT where the rider starting last had the quickest time, because then they would finish first (winning) and finish last (last to cross the line) at the same time.

But obviously not Pfft

Kind of misleading question though as he technically didn't finish first, he was just a stage winner.

It's not a teaser if the question is straight forward now is it?
There's no point slapping a schleck - Sean Kelly on "Who needs a slap"

Who has achieved the most Top 5s in a Tour de France stage in the last 5 years (09, 08, 07, 06, 05) and yet failed to win a stage. (within the same 5 year period)

Erik Zabel? Consistently high in the pointsclassification though not having won a stage since 2002. Though he did not ride in 2009.

Someone on BBOX I bet.
Maybe Laurent Lefevre or else a sprinter.

Taking a wild stab at it: O'Grady?

Yeah, I agree with Zabel, probably by a landslide as well. He's been lurking in the shadows right behind the winner so many times.

Can't really think of anyone who comes close... maybe Klöden? Then again, that depends whether you count last years TTT as a win.

As I also suspect Zabel will be right be a notable margin, Ill change it to who has the most top 5s with no wins - other than Zabel.

TTT wise, Im taking it from CQ:
1. Astana 46'29" 20
CONTADOR VELASCO Alberto, ARMSTRONG Lance, KLÖDEN Andreas, LEIPHEIMER Levi, PAULINHO Sergio Miguel Moreira, ZUBELDIA AGIRRE Haimar
2. Garmin - Slipstream 18" 12
VANDE VELDE Christian, HESJEDAL Ryder, MILLAR David, WIGGINS Bradley, ZABRISKIE David
3. Team Saxo Bank 40" 8
SCHLECK Andy, ARVESEN Kurt Asle, CANCELLARA Fabian, LARSSON Gustav Erik, SCHLECK Fränk, VOIGT Jens
4. Liquigas 58" 6
PELLIZOTTI Franco, KREUZIGER Roman, NIBALI Vincenzo, VANDBORG Brian Bach, WILLEMS Frederik
5. Team Columbia - HTC 59" 3
CAVENDISH Mark, GRABSCH Bert, HINCAPIE George, KIRCHEN Kim, MARTIN Tony, MONFORT Maxime, ROGERS Michael

So the 6 Astana riders listed are counted as winning. (So incidentally, this method will not class Noval as a winner)

Vande Velde has some good results without a stage win, not sure if he is anywhere near the top though.

Hmm, probably some second tier sprinter then. O'Grady... vielleicht even the older of the Feillu brothers.

Gerald Ciolek, I guess.

I will guess Millar probably has a few, although I would be surprised if a non-sprinter wins it

Please assume I am joking unless otherwise stated

I wouldn't be surprised if it is Ciolek. Has never quite managed the win but always seems to be up there in the sprints.

Since a lot of the leading riders have been mentioned, here are all those with 4 or more:
Zabel15
Ciolek8
O'Grady7
Feillu R6
Pellizotti6
Farrar5
Millar5
Moreau5
Schleck A5
Wiggins5
Arvesen4
Landis4
Basso4

Theres an argument for Evans on 12, but he is officially the stage winner from the 2007 Albi ITT that Vino was disqualified from. Kloden's only win from 9 Top 5s is a TTT, while Hunter and Pereiro had 8 each with 1 win, Hincapie and Voigt 7 with 1.

K I'd like to jump in if I may. Inspired by SN's question, which rider(s) have been top 5 in a TDF GC at least twice in 05,06,07,08,09 without winning a stage in that same time frame (I am not counting TTTs)

arthon
None? I think everyone who finished at least twice in the TDF GC top 5 in the last 5 editions has won a stage (Menchov, Evans, Sastre, Contador, Frank Schleck etc.)

Roman
No idea. I think that this rider isn't existent. Pfft
Manager of Moser - Sygic

valverde321
Yeah is there even one?

TheDealer
Oops I posted the wrong thing. I meant top 10 in GC (no this not a desperate cover up).

joostie
my guess is Leipheimer
