Giro della Calabria Stage 4 Report And January Month Summary
Giro della Calabria Stage 4
The last stage of the race was a mostly flat up until the the deciding climb near the end that would most likely determine the winner. We plan to again attack on that last climb with Deignan and make a second counter-attack on the downhill with Peraud since he has a great downhill ability. To do this we plan to help chase down the break and not take part in it today.
The stage started as normal and a group of 10-15 riders got into the breakaway, and then the chase was on.
With a strong chase group the breakaway never had a chance and was reeled in about 5km away from the base of the final climb.
And now it was time for Deignan to try and over take the peleton, and try and take the stage, we let him loose with 5km left in the climb and was only followed by 5 riders.
And over top was in 4th place 45 seconds ahead of the peleton but 25 seconds behind the 1st and 2nd. And with the top two riders looking like locks for the top two spots, Peraud made his move, and a strong one at that.
Even catching up Deignan and his group but then flying by for 3rd Place.
But 1st and 2nd way up their Peraud was in good position for 3rd and the peleton knew it too and stepped on the gas pedal and quickly brought back Deignan and his followers.
And now it was just three riders out in front with 2.5km to go. Peraud held a 20 second gap, and need more because his sprint ability is under par. And for that reason couldn't hold off the surging sprint trains and was caught under 1km banner.
Leaving the top two climbers, both from Liquigas-Doimo, for the top two spots, but surprising didn't get rewarded with a time gap. I thought they had a nice little gap.

Interview - Manager Mresuperstar
Q: What are your thoughts about your team results in overall?
A: Well ... I would have liked our first win, but hey we had great efforts from Deignan, Peraud and I liked the fact Talansky keep fighting even after the first stage, no offense to Anziani. Also Having 2 top ten placings in 4 stages is something rather than coming away with nothing.

Totally flat stage today would make you think that this was going to be a boring stage, but it was anything but ...
The Start,
The early breakaway that gained over 7 minutes, mostly by the poor chase effort at the start of the stage by Confidis. Make the second half of the stage hard for Rabobank who toke over trying to step-up for sprinter Freire.
With 25km left the break still had a minute lead and they started attacking each other and hopes of a solo victory.
But very unsecessful and everyone was reeled in under the 10km banner,
Sprint trains now forming Talansky was despritely trying to find Freire's train but it was already 10 riders long and had to settle for a RadioShack Train with 4 riders who were setting up for Steegmans.
Then out of nowhere there was a fall back in the middle of the peleton ...
The fall caused 25-30 riders to go down including Lance Armstrong, Stephen Auge, Kim Kirchen, Ivan Basso, and Vladmir Karpets. Also taking down our own rider Thomas Peterson. Everyone involved came in +2'33.
Now, back to the sprint ...
Talansky just didn't have the speed to compete with the big names and came in 15th Place, while Freire challenged Yauheni Hutarovich for first.
And it was Hutarovich on the line. While the fallers follow-in like I said 2'33 behind.

124 Raphaël Delobel EA-SONY ERICSSON CYCLING +1'54
126 Thomas Peterson EA-SONY ERICSSON CYCLING +2'33
Interview - Thomas Peterson
Q: What happened coming down to the finish?
A: Well I was just mining my own business when a rider about quarter of km ahead of me just lost it crashing into three other riders, and after that it was a chain reaction. And there was just nowhere to go expect down. But I'm glad to say that I was the luck one that gone ran over by Armstrong. I can add that to my scrapbook.
After the race I was contacted by our sponsors and they are really dissapointed with the first 5 races of the season and told us to pick up the pace very soon.

Challenge Volta Ciclista a Mallorca Stage 2 Race Report
The second stage looks like a good stage for a sucessful breakaway since teams are stiring over the crashs that happen in stage one. Leaving close to 30 riders off the pace of the peleton. With this in mind we plan to send Thomas Peterson into that breakaway so we don't have to put in the effort to chase it down.
Peterson did his job finding his way into the break, and they worked well together gaining a 6 minute gap, making Rabobank put in more hard work for their sprinter Freire. But they did get the job done and caught the break with 15km to go. Leaving what was looking to be a bunch sprint. But heading into 6km to go a small steep hill caught the sprint trains off guard, not only did it cause another fall the middle of the peleton ....
(None of the favorites were taken out this time, or any of our riders but it slow down some of our young helps who managed to steer around the pile up)
...... But also set-up an attack from ......
PHILIP DEIGNAN!
The strong attack caught the sprint trains off gaurd and with 3km to go Geignan held a 20 second gap, but Freire had his train fired up. But under the 1km to go banner Deignan still had a gap of 10 seconds.
And Freire was coming strong, could Deignan hold him off .....
YES HE COULD! Bring home EA-Sony Ericsson first win.
What a win for the team.
EDIT: Found the results after a reboot of the computer....
Stage 2 Overall Result
1 Philip Deignan EA-SONY ERICSSON CYCLING
2 Óscar Freire Rabobank
3 Yauheni Hutarovich Française des Jeux

165 Masauso Wells EA-SONY ERICSSON CYCLING +6'04
167 Raphaël Delobel EA-SONY ERICSSON CYCLING +6'37
168 Shadrack Miles EA-SONY ERICSSON CYCLING +8'14
General Overall Standings
All same for there no time gaps so if they finished in the peleton the first two stages they are all tied for first.
Interview - Philip Deignan
Q: Well, how does it feel?
A: AWESOME! Bring home the first win for this new squad is more than I could ask, I would have liked it to come in the Giro della Calabria but hey this was pretty cool because this was a surprise victory. This was my own attack because there was nothing in today;s team plans for me to attack. And as you saw in the Calabria race I never quit fight in every hill stage for a victory and well this time today I won. Great things are to come of this team, watch out.

I did take their names off for some of the photos, but also keep them on for some either to show you and so you can locate were everyone is. And what does the ['] do?

Maybe next year, I decided adgainst the GT because of the team's size plus any one of the three would have made conflicts between team and sponsors goals. Since I want the team to surive a while I'm going to need the financial support for completing the goals. Sorry, again hopeful next year. Might have time here to post stage 3 of Challenge Volta Ciclista a Mallorca.

Challenge Volta Ciclista a Mallorca Stage 3 Report
Today's stage was classified as a hill stage, but the way we looked at, it looked more like a flat stage, because the final climb was almost 40km out from the finish line. So we planned just to keep pace and if their happens to be an attack on that climb we would be ready to send out Peterson, and maybe Deignan if it looked strong enough to last.
No really strong breakaways got way, because team Rabobank and RadioShack were on top of it being a very wind stage they didn't want to take any chances on the GC or a possibly stage win. The fast pace set and the wind factor just destroyed our young riders and up the first climb of the day sent Delobel, Crawford, Miles, and Wells off the back, and they were never able to catch up.
Coming up to the that last climb 40km away from the finish the breakaway was pulled in and anyone that wanted to attack could do so as RadioShack and Rabobank stepped off the pace either teasing other teams to try to attack or preparing their own attack, only time could tell.
Carlos Barredo of Quick-Step was done playing games with Rabo and the Shack and attack 1km from the top and was followed by a good group of riders included Oscar Freire, Jens Voigt, and Stijn Devolder. And as told our own Peterson.
Still back in the peleton were favorites Menchov and Armstrong, and the Shack had to step in with Armstrong missing the first group they had to try and bring them back. We decide to stay back have Peterson in the group and Deignan in the peleton we sat back and watched the action.
With RadioShack setting a strong pace the breakaway riders had to turn to attacking each other to get rid of unhelping riders if they want to win, and the sudden attack caught Peterson off guard. and he was dropped from the group.
Down to 8km to go and the gap to 2 minutes RadioShack simple gave up for Armstrong, which change our plans with Peterson coming back into the peleton there was nothing stopping Deignan from attacking to save some time, and he went for it, and was followed by Menchov who was mad at his team for not letting his team attack on the final climb and instead went with Freire.
With the team car getting the best of Menchov, he was forced to stop the counter-attack of Deignan and now Deignan was all alone on the chase. But now with 5km left their was no way he was going to catch the main break group and now set his sites on beat the peleton to the line, to gain time on both Menchov and Armstrong for the GC.
At the Finish line it was surprisingly Jens Voigt who beat Freire in the sprint, and the race now turn to Deignan gap on the peleton.
And when the peleton went under the 1km banner he still held a 20 second gap. But the sprint was on .....
And a great effort sprint by Deignan earned him with a 16 second time gap back to the peleton, but more important Menchov and Armstrong.

Interview - Thomas Peterson
Q: What happened up front today and that final breakaway?
A: Well as told in the pre-race meeting I was told if their was any attacks on that last time I was to be in that group, and I was. But once in the group they were setting down a hard pace, and after 10km or so, they all at once attacked. I could believe how much energy each of them had left. And all I could do was watch, I had nothing left in my legs.

Stage 4 Challenge Volta Ciclista Mallorca Race Report
The deciding stage of the race was in front of us today, so for the team meeting I told the riders to stay calm but on the final climb give it everything you got. And that was it, I left Deignan with the decision on went to attack because really most of the time he attacks by himself anyway. Which could pose a problem in the future, but for today he was to show us his knowledge of the race.
Like always the a breakaway is formed, and caught right before the base of the final climb. Great chasing by RadioShack, so we expect a strong attack for Armstrong. The strong pace dropped our riders Delobel, Wells, and Miles.
The first rider to attack on the climb was Jens Voigt.
2nd Attack Pellizotti ...
3rd Attack Devolder with Barredo ....
Then finally Deignan made his move.
At the 10km mark Deignan proved his attack was strong moving into the E2 group of Pellizotti and Jens Voigt, with solo Carlos Barredo about a minute ahead. Yet still no attack from Armstrong.
And at the top of the climb Deignan passed Pellizotti to take 2nd and earned 7 points, still no attack from Armstrong or Menchov.
Now on the downhill it was clear that Barredo had a solo victory and Deignan was have problems keep pace with Voigt and Pellizotti.
Deignan had to settle for a 4th place finished.

Interview - Philip Deignan
Q: What toke you so long to attack?
A: I was waiting, waiting for the right time, I don't think I could have keeped up with Barredo if I went with his attack, I'll face it I not that strong as a Barredo type rider. So when I reached the point were I thought I could make it all the way to the finish with falling back into the peleton, I went, and got a nice 4th place.
Note - Stage 5 should be posted late tonight or early tomarrow morning. This is the finally stage of the Challenge Volta Ciclista a Mallorca.
