Mikhail Ignatiev has taken the team's second victory of the season in the Volta ao Algarve stage 4 time trial. Besting all riders by a large margin, the dominant Russian claimed his first win of the season, and if he manages to hold on to the lead in stage 5, will win his first overall for Wiggle - San Pellegrino.
Besting previous leader, Jurgen Van den Broeck by 1 minute 2 seconds, he now leads by 12 seconds, which may well be a perilously small gap. We can only hope he holds on!
Other notable performances are by Ben Hermans, who now lies in the young riders jersey, and is 6th overall, along with some great team duties being performed by Pavarin, who has really shone down in the Continental Tour so far this season, and Diggle, who has finally stepped up a level this year.
And, with a rather lowly 14th place on stage 5 of the Volta ao Algarve, Mikhail Ignatiev takes his first overall win of the season.
Ben Hermans took a solid 6th on the general classification, and the young riders prize, with Bertagnolli in 13th and Diggle in 16th to confirm the teams classification as well.
Overall a very successful tour, and one we hope to repeat very soon at the next level up. Tirreno - Adriatico and Milan San Remo are very close, and with the overall win, Mikhail is keen to show how he can carry his form into the Pro Tour. Certainly a feeler towards how we can compete next season, should we promote, it will be interesting to see if we can really put the Pro Tour teams under pressure.
In a mixed bag of affairs, Wiggle - San Pellegrino Professional Cycling Team showed to the Pro Tour teams that they very much deserve to ride at the same level. The first stage of Tirreno-Adriatico fell to Simone Ponzi to show all teams that Wiggle are very serious about performing at the highest level of cycling.
A victory was more than expected, but will be treasured by the team and management.
Rather unfortunately, Mikhail Ignatiev took a tumble on the same stage and lost a bit of time. We hope he'll be fine and find some good legs to take back the time to fight for the overall. With Ponzi up there on the GC too, we'll certainly have a two-pronged attack.
A bit of a bounce back for Ignatiev in the second stage, as he attempted to lead out Luke Rowe, who took 5th on the first stage. As a result, Rowe took 8th, Ponzi 9th, and Mikhail 10th. A good start to our Pro Tour campaign, and one that will surely give the sponsors confidence in the team for future investment.
Recent races have been good for the Wiggle - San Pellegrino Professional Cycling Team. A small break in racing after the Giro di Sardegna; where Ponzi took 2nd in the General Classification, 1st in the Points Classification, as well as a stage win, and 3 other top 5 stage placings, in a race of only 5 stages; has allowed Simone to recharge his batteries and come out, all guns blazing, in the Profonde Van Drenthe, where he took 2nd place in the one day classic.
But, it hasn't only been Simone showing the Wiggle - San Pellegrino colours to the world. Closer to home, Dario Cataldo was given free reign to shine at the Giro del Trentino. Whilst we would be hard pushed to replicate the previous years success that Rinaldo Nocentini gave us, some useful performances would aid the team towards gaining the heights of the Pro Tour.
Cataldo chasing Ricco on the final stage. He ended up finishing 7th on the day and 6th overall.
5th on stage 2 was as good as Cataldo got, whilst Damiano Caruso took the honours on stage 3, before hanging on to finish 9th overall. Another great performance from the Wiggle - San Pellegrino riders to further cement their claim on promotion.
Nocentini managed to finish 11th on the General Classification, a noteworthy performance from the aging stalwart within the team.
Davide Appolonio may not have won the Quatre Jours de Dunkerque, but without his help, Mikhail Ignatiev wouldn't have either. Appolonio, currently on loan at Wiggle - San Pellegrino Professional Cycling Team from Lipton Ice Tea, who in return have Matt Rowe, is gaining experience performing a whole host of roles.
For the majority of the season, he will be racing alongside Matt Rowe's brother, Luke, in support and hoping to gain experience from a talented Continental Tour sprinter, but for a couple of races, Davide will be a solid domestique aiding team leaders like Mikhail Ignatiev in their attempts to win races, and get the team promoted.
It's not often that riders such as Appolonio get a mention in the press, but it's always appriciated the work that they do.
Locatelli, Appolonio and Hampton were on hand to help Mikhail Ignatiev to another superb overall win.
It's been a while since the last time the Press were in contact with Wiggle - San Pellegrino Professional Cycling Team, but since the last occasion, Davide Appolonio helped both Mikhail Ignatiev and Ben Hermans to another great success at the Tour of Belgium, coming home with 1st and 3rd on the General Classification. Since the winning ways of those two in Northern Europe, Simone Ponzi and Damiano Caruso have also showed strength in single day classics.
Ponzi was the first to shine, with a stunning solo breakaway ride to victory in one of the hardest Sponsor Goals, Giro di Lago di Garda.
Ponzi took a win during a spree of many 2nds, 3rds and a Top 10 in his run of Summer Classics.
Caruso, not wishing to be shown up by his Italian comrade, took it to the sprinters in the well suited Fyen Rundt. Not only winning a valuable classic, but being supported in the finale by last years winner, Ben Hermans, this one dayer really showed off the depth in the squad.
Caruso defended the teams 2010 victory in Fyen Rundt, the "Sprinters Classic."
Wiggle - San Pellegrino Professional Cycling Team are very proud to announce the season's success in attaining promotion to the Pro Tour. Long time team sponsors Wiggle are exceptionally happy with the increase in brand awareness as a result and have promised to increase funds available for transfers, training and salary throughout the coming season. San Pellegrino were unsure of whether to continue, but agreed at the last moment to ensure they maintained high coverage in all the Italian races throughout the season. The team will ensure they get the best coverage they can by fielding the strongest squads in all Italian races.
Unfortunately, the team has split ways with bike manufacturer Colnago, preferring the British brand Enigma, with it's premier range of bike, the Eulogy, after it was announced that bitter rivals Bacardi - Colt were riding them in the new season.
Luckily for the team, the minor sponsors were still happy to provide the back up, and Filmop, Bottoli, Elite, Lotus, Giro, Rudy Project, Campagnolo and Giordana are all staying put, to honour the great success that the team has achieved.
The management were also quick to praise the entire squad, reassuring all riders that they would all get offers in the new season, although it has been rumoured that one of the stagiares did fail to impress.
The new bike for the season, the Eulogy, provided by Enigma, a British bike brand
As mentioned previously, both companies, Wiggle and San Pellegrino, have committed to yet another season sponsoring the Anglo-Italiano cycling team, run by Mr Cleaver. As with all seasons since the introduction of Wiggle as main sponsor, the focus has been on developing younger talents, along with purchasing off other teams riders who are getting on in age, but can still perform a role admirably. This latter aspect being ignored somewhat last season, when both Dario Cataldo and Mikhail Ignatiev were signed, as both have years left of riding at the very highest level.
With a new season knocking on the door, San Pellegrino were eager to impress upon the management the need to continue with development for another couple of seasons. With the specific aim of finding a rider to complement Simone Ponzi's abilities on the hills, by being able to take over on the more mountainous terrain. Whilst Dario Cataldo can perform admirably on mountainous terrain, his ability over the twenty-one stages of a Grand Tour, such as the Giro d'Italia, are not as high as a rider with the calibre of Italian National Champion, Giampaolo Caruso, or multiple Giro winner, Damiano Cunego.
In a similar manner to many teams looking to develop new talents, a new stage racer must be from either Italy or Great Britain, with the emphasis on talent. San Pellegrino have understood the seasons of work it has taken to ensure the services of many quality domestiques, such as the 3 seasons Tom Diggle has ridden for the team, but they are determined that the team no longer focus on domestique level riders, but instead on high-end stage racers.
With such a pressure to get a rider of quality, it's a sure thing that there won't be many transfers this season at Wiggle - San Pellegrino!

Wiggle - San Pellegrino Professional Cycling Team are extremely proud to announce the coming season goals, and sponsor races, now that rider contract renewals and transfers have begun.
On the same theme as last season, the focus remains in Italy, and as a reward to the tifosi, the team hopes to ignite the races with flair and panache.
After the push for promotion, the increase in budget has allowed the team to focus on the Monuments of cycling. Luke Rowe and Simone Ponzi will both be team leaders for the goal of a Top 10 in Milan San Remo, whilst Ponzi will take on the sole responsibility, with back up from 2011 2nd placed Damiano Caruso, in the Giro di Lombardia, with the goal of doing one better and winning!
Performing in stage races is something the team is not so concerned about, but a Top 3 spot in Tirreno - Adriatico may be on the cards for Ponzi, or perhaps a new stage racer.
Carrying on in the strong showing at the Giro d'Italia, the minimum expectation is to win another stage this season. Cataldo will lead the GC at the Giro, and hopes to win another stage this season to help his overall position.
The team's focus for the season overall, is to perform strongly in single day races, whilst taking chances in stage races, and hoping to avoid relegation out of the Pro Tour.
Five important races for the sponsors to keep an eye on are: Amstel Gold, Rund um Koln, Liege-Bastogne-Liege, Fleche Wallone, and East Midlands CiCle Classic.
The budget for the season is €5,680,820.

Wiggle - San Pellegrino Professional Cycling Team are happy to announce the successful completion of rider contract renewals for the 2012 season. Whilst some of the long serving team have lost their contracts, due to exceptionally high wage demands, the rest of the team were very happy to be given new contracts. An interesting note to add is that Jonathon Tiernan-Locke is now the oldest rider on the team at 28.

It is with some regret that two of Wiggle - San Pellegrino's long serving leaders have been released prior to the transfer season. Rinaldo Nocentini, whilst he isn't getting any younger, would still have been able to pass on his experience to some of the younger riders, such as up and coming stage race talent Teodoro Costagli, who spent last season learning at Vesuvio - Accumalux. However, coming straight in with a contract demand of €130,000, he was setting himself up for a fall. With other riders able to fulfill the same role as Nocentini for the coming season, and his reluctance to drop his demands, he has found himself searching for another team for possibly his last season riding in the professional peloton.
Has Nocentini had his last success for Wiggle - San Pellegrino?
Leonardo Bertagnolli has also been released from the team. Whilst it was a mistake last season to reward Leonardo with such a hefty contract, he took it to mean that he would always be given such a contract. In a similar situation to Nocentini, his refusal to back down from his first demand of €180,000, he has also been instantly released. The manager of the team refused to comment on whether he would attempt to re-sign the riders on lower contracts during the transfer season.
Bertagnolli has left the team, but perhaps Visconti could assume his role on the team?
It was an interesting move by the Management Game Ruling Body last season when it was announced that teams would be able to sign on prospective young riders on Stagiare contracts. These youth contracts essentially saw riders have a few races to attempt to impress their respective team bosses in an attempt to sign a professional contract for the following season. At Wiggle - San Pellegrino, development of loyal domestiques was very much on the cards, and in the manager's mind.
When attempts to sign more Italian youths fell through due to strong competition from then rivals Vespa - Caffreys, the focus shifted to nationalities with strong links to cycling.
Julien Paquet, a talented time trialist to-be, was signed, and took part in the Tour of Missouri in support of team leader Mikhail Ignatiev. It was rumoured that he had done enough to impress the management at Wiggle - San Pellegrino, but with promotion to the Pro Tour, his lack of experience, coupled with the years of development required, meant he just didn't cut the mustard.
The other unfortunate rider out of the three stagiares to not get a full contract was the newly crowned double National Champion, Mustafa Sayar. Clearly his skills in his country don't compare to the rest of the world, yet his potential would indeed have allowed him to compete at the highest level as a solid domestique. At Wiggle - San Pellegrino, time is not on his side, and all the best is wished to the Turkish Champion. During his time at Wiggle - San Pellegrino, he rode in the GP Plouay, the Tour of Ireland and the Circuit Franco - Belge, somewhere along the line scoring a few points for the team.
Sayar is back in training with his Amateur team mates in his home land of Turkey, and still waiting for some National Champions kit!
And that leaves us with introducing Oleksandr Martynenko, the Ukrainian puncheur, who impressed the team with his solid performance at the Tour of Pendle, securing the teams best finish in 5th, just ahead of Caruso in 6th. Whilst his success was enough to secure a professional contract for the season, he has been made aware that riding in Wiggle - San Pellegrino kit is highly unlikely, as the team still believe he requires a gentler approach to developing his talents. With that in mind, a link with another team would be beneficial for Wiggle - San Pellegrino, especially a team with a focus on development of talented riders. Regardless of whether a loan is successful or not, it has been rumoured that by the end of the transfer period, Oleksandr will not be the only Ukrainian on the team. Well, we'll just have to wait and see!
Martynenko secured his professional contract for the coming season, as he hopes to continue his success back down in the Continental Tour.
Mattia Cattaneo, THE rising star of Italian cycling, has just been signed to the premier Italian ProTour squad, Wiggle - San Pellegrino Professional Cycling Team. For an extraordinary wage of €400,000, Cattaneo is now faced with the uphill struggle of expectation in his three year rise to the top. Poised to take over at the Giro d'Italia, where Damiano Cunego is poised to leave, Cattaneo will be supported fully in his training towards that long awaited goal, Win the Giro d'Italia. With that in mind, Wiggle - San Pellegrino look to loan out Cattaneo so that he may gain experience at an easier level.
Mattia Cattaneo signs for Wiggle - San Pellegrino. Will he be loaned out soon? And at what cost to his new team?
It is with some relief that two of Wiggle - San Pellegrino's long serving leaders have been re-signed during the transfer season! Rinaldo Nocentini, whilst he isn't getting any younger, will now have the chance to be able to pass on his experience to some of the younger riders, such as up and coming stage race talent Teodoro Costagli, who spent last season learning at Vesuvio - Accumalux. After facing the humiliation of no contract, he has been re-signed for a €50,000 wage, a significant drop from that he was asking for. We welcome Nocentini back with open arms!
Has Nocentini had his last success for Wiggle - San Pellegrino? It doesn't look like it! He's re-signed during the transfer season.
Leonardo Bertagnolli has also been re-signed to the team. Whilst it was a mistake last season to reward Leonardo with such a hefty contract, he took it to mean that he would always be given such a contract. In a similar situation to Nocentini, his refusal to back down from his first demand of €180,000, he has also been instantly released. Luckily for us, the demand for such an experienced rider was not as great as feared. He has been re-signed on a €50,000 wage.
Bertagnolli has left the team, but rejoins after Visconti was a no-go.
The second, and last, bit of Transfer News for this season [excluding Loan News] is ready to be divulged.
In a superb move for Wiggle - San Pellegrino Professional Cycling Team's bid to remain in the Pro Tour, Tour de France podium placing Ukrainian, Jaroslav Popovych has signed for the team from Carmeuse Cyclisme. His main focus will be on the Grand Tours, with a possible double on the cards. Another podium finish at the Tour would be an excellent achievement for the team, and it's quite possibly the last chance Jaroslav will have at achieving such a task. It has been thought that Popovych has signed his last contract and transfer papers and will now remain at Wiggle - San Pellegrino Professional Cycling Team for the rest of his career, taking after Rinaldo Nocentini and Leonardo Bertagnolli.
Popovych and Nocentini together on the podium in rival teams, now on the same team, can they work together to secure the top step?
Following on in the same vein as the previous years, another young Italian has been taken on to the team. For a low wage of 50,000 euros, Moreno Moser has signed on a Neo-Pro's contract. His main focus will be to support Luke and Matt Rowe in the sprints, whilst also striving to improve his own time trialling ability, something that is lacking in the team. Whilst very inexperienced, he will remain in the squad for this year, gaining valuable experience from the Tour de l'Avenir and Pro Tour level races.
Francesco's nephew has joined the premier Italian Professional Cycling team in a bid to replicate some of Uncle's successes.
Our last signing for the season comes from the sunny Isles of the United Kingdom. Scott Thwaites, hailing from "up North", will join the ranks of fellow Brits, Fenn, Rowe, Rowe, Diggle, Hampton, Tiernan-Locke and Tanguy in a bid to reach the heights of cycling domination. Not quite at the same level of experience as Moreno, he will be loaned out to Continental Team, CycleVox. They will ensure his steady and intelligent approach to development, and strengthen the bond between both teams.
Thwaites is off to CycleVox for the season, so he can race more at home than abroad, in a less pressured environment.
A bit of a sore point for the manager, Mikhail Ignatiev forced his way out of the team for a season to join fellow Russians Ivan Rovny and Nikolai Trusov at T.CS Bank. In an exchange loan, Timofey Kritskiy and Aleksej Kunshin have joined Wiggle - San Pellegrino Professional Cycling Team for the season, in an attempt to learn from the best. Kritskiy is likely to shadow Popovych in the stage races, whilst possibly being given a few chances of his own. Kunshin will ride wherever he is told to go.
Timofey will be riding a few of these this season!
Ben Hermans, a long standing Wiggle rider, has left the team for a season long loan, in a bid to gain some glory for himself. To replace his pedigree, Tommy Zaini was loaned in, to support Ponzi in the hills.
The most exciting Loanee of the season to join Wiggle - San Pellegrino Professional Cycling Team has to be Ian Bibby though. Hailing from the United Kingdom, this talented rider will look forward to experiencing some of the hardest races the Pro Tour has to offer, whilst being likely to lead in some Spanish races throughout the season.
The actual last bit of transfer news is the announcement of a further 5 riders to be added to the Wiggle - San Pellegrino Professional Cycling Team's roster.
Brit Steven Burke, joins us after facing a season on the sidelines, to support the team in time trials. Any race with a team time trial in it may well be bolstered by the presence of the rider from a Track background.
Vladimir Bileka joins the team for one season in a bid to aid Yaroslav Popovych in the less important races on Wiggle's calender. Perfectly suited to a little time trialling, sprinting and all round domestique work, he'll happily fit in to a breakaway role.
Bileka together with an ex-Wiggle, Steven Cummings
Grega Bole, a strong man from Slovenia, revels in the hills. Perfect then for helping out our main man, Simone Ponzi. Instantly replacing Grippo from the line ups in the hilly classics, Bole will be relied upon heavily across the World and season.
Aleksandr Kuschynski will join the team to support our cobble leader, Andrew Fenn. With legs of steel, Aleksandr will help teach Fenn to power over the cobbles of Northern Europe. Kuschynski also has the pride to continue Wiggle's tenuous link to Belarus, in being the next Aleksandr to ride for the team after Aleksandr Usov's departure seasons ago.
Aleksandr Kuschynski promises to use them only to deal out pain.
Last, but not least, a rider we've had an eye on for a couple of seasons now. With space still to develop, Blaz Jarc was an unfortunate rider to find himself released from his previous team. Coming in towards the end of the transfers, he found himself still without a team to ride for, before Wiggle stepped in to gladly include him on the roster. A capable hilly rider, Jarc will be looking to gain experience in the Pro Tour, and hope to impress the team enough to stay around for seasons to come.
