Sounds typically Anglo Saxon. It's not because many people only know the Tour de France that there is only one important race. |

I'm not saying it's the only one important race. However, if you were to ask any single professional rider, which race they'd like to take part in. I can bet damn sure that everyone would have the Tour as one of their top few races to compete in. Even if it's just to finish it.

Yeah. It's not just the importance of the race. The Tour is almost Mythical. |

And if you ask any rider in which race he doesn't want to start anymore, he'll also answer the Tour *lol* ;-)
No seriously, you're right of course, even though some other races are quite inspiring too. In my opinion, the Tour is a bit overestimated, even though it is the most important race of the year. But that's just a personal opinion. |

It make sense that it's overestimated. Since most people find it the most important race if the year, expectations are high. But when it comes down to the racing, the riders are the same riders that race any other race, so it's not much different.
But you just gotta love everything organized around the Tour. If you've ever visited a start or mainly a finish place, you know what I mean. |

Best Rider: Bettini in my mind he was the best classics rider of the decade.
Biggest Disappointment: The beloki crash
Biggest Surprise: Cunego He was being compared to armstrong as a young rider but hasn't won anything big since the giro win. And also that Bradley Wiggins can climb.
Best Team: Team CSC Saxo-Bank 2008. I just think this might have been the best stage racing team ever.AMybe not the most superstars nut the team got along well it seemed.
Best Race: 2007 Tour De France. I think it was really exciting every competition was really close, the yellow the green. Plus it had the best lineup of riders with almost every team having a potential winner it seemed.
Most Disappointing Race: '09 tour because everyone in the world i'm sure could tell contador was going to win as soon as he pulled on the yellow on stage fourteen. Just really boring I mean Sprint stages everyone knew Cav would win them all he had no competition. I guess Astana made it boring though.
Best Moment: To me when Ryder Hesjedal won a stage in the '09 Vuelta. Or Lance winning the tour for the 7th time. Just because of the feat.
Worst Moment: When Valverde Doped he was my favourite rider and then I come home from school check the news and bam.
Moment You'll Always Remember: Linus Gerdemann Descending on stage seven of 07 tour. I don't know a reason.
Biggest Story:Lance coming back but this story was way to exagerated he barely won anything. Here in Canada in't the only thing I heard about cycling on a weekly basis.
Best Story: Lot's of good ones
Worst Story: Doping........
P.s In Canada the only cycling on tv is the Tour the rest I watch on youtube which usually isn't English so it's hard to find stuff.

How does Boonen even rate up against Bettini?
He simply doesn't
Yes, I do realize that simply in terms of the quality his Palmares, Bettini blows Boonen out of the water. I have a reason that I don't have Bettini anywhere near even my top 10, but I don't feel like starting an argument with you about it (and no, it has nothing to do with doping). Because of that, I move Boonen up to #1.

Without bothering to look it up, I'd say that that is a massive overstatement and might not even be true. |

Been having a think about this today.
Best Rider: Lance Armstrong - pity he is also the rider I most dislike.
Biggest Disappointment: Operation Puerto and its aftermath.
Biggest Surprise: That Cavendish was able to establish himself as a top sprinter as quickly as he did.
Best Team: Fassa Bortolo, c. 2003. CSC would have to be 2nd, c. 2005.
Best Race: Stage 17 of the 2006 Tour de France. Absolutely stunning ride. This and stage 16 were the best two days racing of the decade.
Most Disappointing Race: 2009 Tour de France. It barely even qualified as a race.
Best Moment: Each of the times Paris-Roubaix hit the Arenburg trench over the last decade.
Worst Moment: Jan Ullrich's career finishing the way it did - especially as someone else involved in exactly the same thing continues to ride and reap the rewards and won his first GT last season.
Moment You'll Always Remember: Ballan and Hoste fighting for the win at Flanders. The last couple of hundred meters was real life in slow motion.
Biggest Story: The rise and rise and rise of the TdF.
Best Story: Pro Cycling is still around and the next 10 years will probably be pretty similar to the last 10 years. It's all swings and roundabouts.
Worst Story: Doping and how some people still feel betrayed when one of 'their' riders does it. Illustrated well by ProCycling magazine's fervent anti-doping stance. Btw, loved their feature on Zirbel last month. |

Biggest Surprise: Alberto Contador.
Best Team: US Postal

Worst Moment: B.Neves death
Moment You'll Always Remember : Theo Bos wrestling in Turkey
Biggest Story: Back to the Future by Lance Primadona Armstrong
Best Story: Boonen caught with cocaine... again!

Good point. Hadn't thought of that one. Really came out of nowhere. When Bettini attacked and Vino, Ullrich and everyone else gave their absolute maximum to stay with him on that climb and only Paulinho could do it......my jaw went to the floor

i just loved this bit
Cant blame him realy
for what? being doped up to his eyeballs and then, once he got caught, showing absolutely no remorse, no apology, not even admitting to it?
yeah, we can blame him for that. |
