Stage 4/6, 200.1 kms
i.imgur.com/TMrcIB5.png

Story of the Day
i.imgur.com/wkgGjwE.png
Col des Mosses was the first climb of the day. Zardini got dropped from the break very early. Their time gap did not amount to more than 1'30".
i.imgur.com/UTGjwKr.png
Over Col du Pillon, the breakaway was down to 3 riders. Jesús Herrada, Bakelants and Kiserlovski had 2'25" at the intermediate sprint in Gstaad.
i.imgur.com/s0nOwqT.png
Jaunpass, the last difficulty of today, was by far the toughest one. Nairo Quintana was the first to accelerate on the cat.1 climb, countered by Aru.
i.imgur.com/G8W46kt.png
The Italian failed to keep Quintana's wheel, but he was the only one who stayed close. The main group rode 1'30" in arrears, with 1 km to the top.
i.imgur.com/brSJCgC.png
That main group consisted of 10 riders, including race leader Kelderman and Ruben Guerreiro. The latter got big support of Sam Vandenborre.
i.imgur.com/Ga1qoFC.png
Fabio Aru failed to bridge to Quintana and he got reeled in by the chasing group. The Colombian had a 1' gap with around 15 kilometers to the line.
i.imgur.com/R789sqJ.png
Once the gap had shrunk, Kudus bridged on a short bump in the descent. It cost the rest of the group a tad longer to catch up too, but they all did.
i.imgur.com/6SmFRWf.png
Ruben tried to sneak away, and Kudus let him. If not for Poels, our man might have gotten away definitively. Because of Poels' chasing, he didn't.
i.imgur.com/YqYb1p7.png
Landa served as a leadout for Quintana but Ruben seemed to be at least equally strong. He was about to take the lead with just hectometers left.
i.imgur.com/dNYy67F.png
His timing however proved to be way off. While Ruben had to sit up too early, Vladislav Gorbunov sprinted to his first victory on World Tour level. Ruben came in 7th, and saw his efforts yield a move into the GC top 10.

Stage 5/6, 160 kms
i.imgur.com/YZJ1TG0.png

Story of the Day
i.imgur.com/jBjfm5U.png
In rainy conditions, not a single team had anything against the takeoff of the 6-man breakaway group. It featured Dall'Oste, Van Niekerk, Vincent, Bakelants, KoM leader Kiserlovski & Astana's Dieter Walker in last place.
i.imgur.com/DHpVTkf.png
The group initially was halved on the first climb, and only Walker did not make it back. The other five reached the foot of 1st cat. Col des Planches with a gap of 6'. Thirty kilometers left to the renowned Verbier ski resort.
i.imgur.com/6cYvfbu.png
On the first slopes of that second climb, GC 7th Fabio Aru attacked from the peloton. As a reaction, Bahrain sent a few of their riders to the front.
i.imgur.com/3TksvUj.png
Eventually M.A. López and Pinot caught up, 5 kms from the top. By then the peloton was already losing about 1'50". Gap to the break was 4'25".
i.imgur.com/udpRB9l.png
It was up to the likes of Zakarin and Majka to make up the time that was being lost. When they began to, it caused a couple of men to break clear. Ruben couldn't go with them, and even GC leader Kelderman struggled.
i.imgur.com/iRW0OZg.png
Majka's labour allowed Landa to catch up with the three GC riders that'd accelerated earlier, when they were about to reel in two breakaway men. With two km to the top Quintana, Kelderman followed a bit further down.
i.imgur.com/rqeCYDK.png
Fortunately, Ruben had a great support of his own in Edoardo Zardini, who helped him regain sight of Quintana, Kelderman again near the top.
i.imgur.com/fcrddC7.png
Not much happened on the way down towards the foot of the last climb. Bakelants, Kiserlovski and van Niekerk started the 8.4km climb to Verbier with an advantage of 1'45" over the Aru, López, Pinot and Landa quartet.
i.imgur.com/8oiddpF.png
The South African sensed the danger coming from behind, and attacked. Kiserlovski let go, Bakelants followed as the lead shrunk to just about 1'.
i.imgur.com/klOT9Pv.png
Vandenborre came back from behind and could support Guerreiro on the descent. Knowing his teammate wouldn't be of much use anymore on the climb itself, he rode away from his group. Morton, Gorbunov, Kudus tried to go with him, Kelderman was in deep troubles having hit the wall.
i.imgur.com/GjTrwtN.png
Out front, Landa proved to be the strongest of the GC contenders. He'd dropped Aru and caught Bakelants, the last survivor from the breakaway.
i.imgur.com/tfUwgPw.png
Aru came back one last time and ended up being beaten in the sprint and losing a handful of seconds. Mikel Landa moved into the leader's jersey.
i.imgur.com/b9Nntck.png
Guerreiro managed to shake Lachlan Morton and Gorbunov on the way up. Along with Merhawi Kudus, he'd even catch up with Quintana again.
i.imgur.com/gg4ePjG.png
Ruben concluded in 9th place, gaining two spots in the overall standings.

Did a great job considering he had to let go so early on. But we really need to figure out a way to reduce these time losses.

Stage 6/6, 23.7 km ITT
i.imgur.com/hFUIkgo.png

Story of the Day
i.imgur.com/UH29LJS.png
A rather average time trial for Ruben, as he failed to pass Quintana and Kudus in the GC in order to enter the top 5. He even finished slower than the Colombian on the day. Sixth is a repeat of his País Vasco GC result.

Two out of four jerseys changed shoulders on the last day. Landa's lack of TT skills cost him the overall win by 1". Kelderman bounced back after yesterday's disastrous stage and claimed the points jersey back.

Slightly disappointing time trial but the GC result was okay. Landa won't be happy with his, that's for sure. Wink

Don't think a better result was possible in a difficult race. Full focus on the Giro now!
