Hagen got owned. He was in a break with Moerenhout, Martin, Boom and Geschke with about 30km to go. Moerenhout went again and Martin followed, the others let their self fall back. Rabobank was by far the strongest team, and protected the lead.
IMO it was a question of experience. He slowed down and thought that his and other teams will catch the leaders easily as they were like 10-20 seconds up the road when they attacked. He didn't take into account the fact that Rabobank worked very hard to spoil every effort in the chase group.

Well, a stage victory + 2nd place in GC is not bad at all, but of course it would have been ideal to get Moerenhout alone up front with the rest sabotaging behind.
