Welcome back to the last stage of the 2013 VDK - Driedaagse De Panne - Koksijde. On the first glance today's stage profile looks much like yesterday's ones but it is 100km shorter and an individual time trial. This will decide the general classification as 10 riders are within 16 seconds now. These riders are:

Some of them also belong to today's favourites. The biggest one for both GC and stage is surely Taylor Phinney. The North American has picked up already 16 bonus seconds and as he is known as a specialist for short and flat TTs. His biggest threat today is surely last year's winner Sylvain Chavanel. Other favourites are Niki Terpstra, Lars Boom and Damien Gaudin.

Gusev is the first one of the Top Ten to come into the finish area. But before he comes there let's take a quick look at the situation:

i981.photobucket.com/albums/ae297/knockout37/PCM0156_zpsf75de322.jpg

Belgian TT champ Vandewalle (OPQ) has set the best time so far (14'55''Wink. Together with his teammates Vermote and McNutt it is a 1-2-3 till now but things can change quick..

i981.photobucket.com/albums/ae297/knockout37/PCM0158_zpsa86d40aa.jpg

Gusev (KAT) and Di Silvestro (EUC) are the first to go:
- Gusev sets the 4th time with 15'08'' while Di Silvestro is two places behind after being two seconds slower.

Next one is Drago's teammate Gaudin who just goes into the the final km. If he looked to his right he could would see Flech who takes provisional 8th with 15'12''. But he concentrates to get 2nd. Just one second begind Vandewalle.

i981.photobucket.com/albums/ae297/knockout37/PCM0160_zps47b8d726.jpg

And that is close! The time stops for Terpstra at the same seconds as Gaudin had on his clock.

Here comes the flyin' dutchman. Lars Boom takes the lead with 14'51''. Now he has to hope that this is enough to take the podium spot.

This guy takes a really nice picture from Bak who finishes 7th with a time of 15'08''.

Three riders are still on the road. First of them to come into the finish zone is Sylvain Chavanel who sets a new provisional best with 14'40''. That is really fast. But before he knows what this time is worth, we see Vantomme (CRE):

i981.photobucket.com/albums/ae297/knockout37/PCM0166_zpsdb5e531a.jpg

Wearing the No.111, Vantomme sets the 11th best time with 15'11'' but this does not interests the home crowd so much because they want to know the winner.

Will it be Silvain Chavanel or Taylor Phinney?

i981.photobucket.com/albums/ae297/knockout37/PCM0165_zps30376928.jpg

It is Taylor Phinney. The young american finishes in 14'36'' and wins his second stage, the GC, the Point classification and the young riders classification!

He could have had an off-day, or he could have crashed into an annoying fan. Pfft It is quite an achievement for a 19-year old custom rider to get 9th in GC in this field, although finishing in front of Van Avermaet and Hushovd isn't that hard. Wink

Good job by Boom to secure the podium

And thanks for an interesting Driedaagse! Smile
Changed my sig, this was getting absurd.

Still a great top 10 for Flecha

Go Taylor!!! What a way to (almost) finish this part of the season. We go to the break on a high.

Don't know if that's a dig at us but I don't care anyway because for once we actually won.

Sooo sick, we can't beat Phinney even in TT, when we have 5 riders in TOP10. Grin Gratz, but we can't enjoy it, as we missed our goal. Grin

It's not happiness but frustration.Grin

On the other hand, we have scored some nice points, so we can be confident with our "underperformance". Smile

Tour of Oman - Stage 6
i1344.photobucket.com/albums/p649/Jakab_Zoli/1_zps55564793.jpg

Last day in the desert here in Oman. A breakaway succeed again or this time will be a sprint? I don't think the GC will be affected much. But who knows?
i1344.photobucket.com/albums/p649/Jakab_Zoli/2_zpsa94da260.jpg

122km to go
And here we are, we have the breakaway of the day, 8 riders rolling nicely on the beach. Its Peron(TNN), Jorgensen(TST), Day(UHC), Graziato(LAM), Balloni(BAR), Reimer(MTN), Mironov(RVL), Denifl(IAM). GC wise Balloni its the best placed in 26th, more then 10 minutes behind. Not a big surprise as the peloton are lead by EUC.
i1344.photobucket.com/albums/p649/Jakab_Zoli/3_zps9beb95cd.jpg

87km to go - KoM
We just missed the sprint banner where Day peacefully take the points ahead of Balloni and Reimer. But we are now on the top of the cat.3 climb., this time a fierce battle won by Balloni ahead of Day and Denifl. The gap its on 4'57'', earlier maxed on 5'30''. Still EUC on the charge in the peloton.
i1344.photobucket.com/albums/p649/Jakab_Zoli/4_zps49c30b63.jpg

20km to go
Not much happened. The breakaway worked good, but the peloton slowly taked down the gap to 1'30''. EUC was switched with SOJ, AJW and CSS. All the big sprinters are in top30.
i1344.photobucket.com/albums/p649/Jakab_Zoli/5_zps40e2219f.jpg

6km to go - Sprint
Denifl and Balloni attacked from the breakaway, taking the points in this order and constructing a 30'' lead ahead of the the Joergensen lead former mates.
i1344.photobucket.com/albums/p649/Jakab_Zoli/6_zps6673491f.jpg

And watch this. This small bumps allowed for Peeters(EUC) and Ghita(ARG) to attack from the peloton. They are 1'13'' behind the leader duo. 9'' later Izagirre(EUS), De Gendt(VCD) and Evans(BMC) coming in full chase mode. The peloton have a 30'' gap.
i1344.photobucket.com/albums/p649/Jakab_Zoli/7_zps44cd8038.jpg

1km to go
Denifl under the banner and there are riders on the road in the every 100 meters. But i think the win will be decided between Denifl and Balloni, the gap is 18''. Jorgensen and Graziato coming 39'' later. The favourites group have more then 1'30''.
i1344.photobucket.com/albums/p649/Jakab_Zoli/8_zps392e0c34.jpg

Finish
A great win for the swiss team. Denifl done it. He attacked on the right moment and take it ahead of Balloni. Graziato outsprinted Jorgensen for the 3rd place. Coming next Mironov, Reimer and Day for 5-7.
i1344.photobucket.com/albums/p649/Jakab_Zoli/9_zps1b25e926.jpg

Peron, the last breakaway rider caught almost by favourites group, just beating Izagirre and De Gendt for 8th place. Peeters coming home with this group so keeping the leader jersey, it seems the 13th place isn't unlucky.
i1344.photobucket.com/albums/p649/Jakab_Zoli/10_zps93b5da3a.jpg

So, a nice win for Peeters(EUC), adding as bonus the youth and mountain jersey. We found another custom rider in the 2nd place, Ghita(ARG) adding the points jersey to his palmares (Argos's favourite jersey?). Izagirre(EUS) in 3rd and it seems every podium rider have a bonus, this time Euskaltel winning the team rankings.

Nice to finish on a high note after de Panne...

A GC podium and the team competition along with some decent stage results has to be considered a succes!

And thanks for soem good reports to all reporters of part 1!

I look it up again as soon as I'm on my computer but I don't think there was a mountain sprint on any of the stages...
