Tour de France - Stage 10

Preview

Willy: Ironically, this is the stage why I came to this Tour. However, today this is the stage I fear the most. In a time trial there aren't tactics, it's pure strength, and I'm not ashamed to say on such a day I fear Froome.

The Race

Willy Wouters

I got off to a slow start. Unfortunately, I was quite nervous today, I didn't find my rhythm for at least four kilometers after the start.

At the final checkpoint, I was a minute behind Froome, which meant bye-bye jersey. I accelerated!

But it was too late. I made up some time but I knew these were my last kilometers in yellow. It was fun while it lasted, though.

Aftermath

Like I said, it was fun while it lasted. Now that yellow is gone, we can concentrate on the main goal again; riding a decent GC. Without the pressure of the yellow jersey, I can return to my favorite role: attacking the yellow jersey! 10 seconds isn't much. Tomorrow's another day!
Until then,
Willy

Atlantius
Well, those 10 seconds are easily won back - and nice TT by Gretsch!

Only 10 seconds down. Can make that up and put time into Froome over the next week.

Atlantius - Thanks. Gretsch still on top form!

mihai - 10 seconds isn't much, but Froome isn't just anyone! Thank you Smile

sutty68 - We'll see who cracks first Grin

wogsrus - Let's hope so, Froome is strong, though!

Jakstar22 - It sure does!

rogvi97 - Grin wise language Pfft

I was going to race the next one today, but then I went riding in the Flemish Ardennes, when I got home there was company, barbecue, Amstel Gold Race and all that jazz.
Maybe I'll do it later today, but I'm not promising anything Smile

Miguel98
That sounds good. Barbecue after some hills? Best day ever. Cool

dienblad
Don't look for 2 days and you have won 2 Tour stages and had some time in the maillot jaune. Nice one!!

I'm still here following this Smile but I haven't been able to comment due to an extra load of work Sad so far, so good, perhaps Willy can raise his hands in Paris Wink

sutty68
Hope you enjoyed your barbecue Wink

Ian Butler
Miguel98 - Especially with it being the first day the sun shined for hours and hours, temperatures above 20° C!

dienblad - Thanks a lot! Good thing I didn't update yesterday, too, then Wink

FreitasPCM - Glad to hear you're still following though Smile Paris would be a dream, but a top 5 would already be fantastic at this young age! (Though Ulrich and Hinault have won this at age 23...)

sutty68 - I really did! Except the part where one of the guests brought a dog and my cat defended his territory by chasing after that dog. Pfft

Today I will definitely race. As soon as possible, expect a report in a couple of hours Wink

sutty68
Lets hope that Willy is prepared for the fight to the finish Wink

Jakstar22
Can't wait for the stage. Willy will not leave without a fight

Ian Butler
sutty68 - He'll fight all right! Wink

Jakstar22 - You can be sure about that! Stage coming up!

Tour de France - Stage 11

Preview

i1322.photobucket.com/albums/u569/IanButlerPCM2/tdf1101_zpseed418c3.jpg

Willy: Well... I'm going to take a few risks today. I won't turn into one of those passive GC contenders. As long as I breathe, I will attack the yellow jersey. Today is the first attempt.

This is practically the stage I won in the Dauphiné, that gives me courage! Only thing I have to remember: preserve some energy, tomorrow's another big stage. Remember the Dauphiné!

The Race

Willy Wouters

Today was all about tiring Team Sky. With an incredibly fast average pace in the first two hours (49km/h), due to constant breakaway attempts, I think we were lucky!

i1322.photobucket.com/albums/u569/IanButlerPCM2/tdf1102_zpsdd4428b9.jpg

And then Costa proved invaluable once again. Upon catching the breakaway, he quickly took me around them: "We'll get away without having to waste much energy." Sky reeled them in from the left, we took the right way!

i1322.photobucket.com/albums/u569/IanButlerPCM2/tdf1103_zpse638cce1.jpg

And it worked! We took a few meters and attacks followed soon, tiring out Team Sky even more. A couple of kilometers later, Froome was isolated!

i1322.photobucket.com/albums/u569/IanButlerPCM2/tdf1104_zps0704fe79.jpg

Both myself and Costa had great legs and we kept a lead. He turned to me and said: "I can take you as far as the top of the Grand Colombier". That was more than I could hope for!

i1322.photobucket.com/albums/u569/IanButlerPCM2/tdf1105_zps2f0d2652.jpg

And he kept promise! Still having plenty of energy left, I was good in the lead. There still was quite a way to go, though! All the way I kept thinking: don't forget tomorrow's stage!

i1322.photobucket.com/albums/u569/IanButlerPCM2/tdf1106_zpsfaf64285.jpg

Behind me, people got nervous and attacked. Obviously, they came closer to me, especially since I wasn't riding at 100%, but they were just tiring each other out, this way!

i1322.photobucket.com/albums/u569/IanButlerPCM2/tdf1107_zpsa57165c5.jpg

Nearing the finish, Contador joined me. Wanting to conserve some energy, I bluffed a bit. At first he didn't seem willingly to ride with me, but when he saw I was serious (still bluffing), he took the lead. We kept a small lead.

i1322.photobucket.com/albums/u569/IanButlerPCM2/tdf1108_zps6d9bc806.jpg

They came pretty close, as we started looking at each other for the sprint finish.

i1322.photobucket.com/albums/u569/IanButlerPCM2/tdf1109_zpsc755b289.jpg

But I kept his wheel and he didn't have a chance in the sprint! Amazing, but my style of attacking gets rewarded once again! My third stage win in the Tour and I regain the yellow jersey!

Aftermath

Wow, just wow! My Tour campaign has been a dream so far. I never expected this. Three wins and winning back yellow! At age 23, I enjoy the advantage of freshness and strong recuperation, but I might have the disadvantage of experience. We'll see which one will take the upper hand!

Flash interview:
Interviewer: Willy, congratulations. Three stages and the yellow jersey. How do you explain it?
Willy Wouters: Since the early 2000s, the Tour has been a closed race mostly. I guess. These last few years, it's changing again. That's in my advantage.
Interviewer: Are we going back to the days of Coppi, long range attacks paying off, epic battles spread over many stages?
Willy Wouters: I should hope so! (laughs). Probably not, but instead of attacks in the final kilometers, you see riders going at 25 km or more and finishing first. That's a good evolution.
Interviewer: You've been the revelation if this Tour. Where does it end?
Willy Wouters: Probably in Paris. No, I'm just looking to do the best I can. I won't give up without a fight.
Interviewer: The youngest Tour winner since Jan Ullrich in 1998?
Willy Wouters: Like I said before, top 5 would be amazing. I'll fight for every place.
Interviewer: Congratulations once again! One more question, maybe. How many more stages will you win?
Willy Wouters: How many are left? (laughs)

I think it's a strange interview, but I was in a weird place when giving it. I'd just won and I was beat, so don't pay too much attention to it. It would be stupid of me not to go for the first place, and of course I'll be disappointed if I would lose this jersey again, but I will be proud if I finish in the top 5.

Anyhow, attacks like today cost energy, and the question is: will I feel that tomorrow? If I don't, I might defend my jersey one day longer. If I do, 15 seconds are peanuts.

Until then,
Willy

I like the aggressive riding (until Contador caught you Pfft ), but maybe it's a bit too soon? There's quite some mountains left, and I hope Willy can hold on. Same for Costa, I wouldn't blow him up too early in the Tour.

Anyway, his leader jersey will be attacked, but it seems to be between Willy, Contador and Froome already. Will be interesting to see how this continues!
Changed my sig, this was getting absurd.
