Nordic Cycling | Final Farewell
Atlantius
dienblad: Only 3 km solo, The trio on the first pic had already delivered him a bit ahead of the peloton (but without losing Antón). That seemed to disrupt the sprinter teams chase a bit as the "break" collapsed when Fuglsang attacked Wink

Great victory for Jakob Grin

I knew he would get the lead back Smile

Stage 19: Brescia - Aprica
i1353.photobucket.com/albums/q675/AllanHG/Nordic%20Cycling%20Project/2015%20Volvo%20Sas/05-05-Giro-19-1_zps389ad54f.jpg
Another terrifying mountain stage all about defense for us.

i1353.photobucket.com/albums/q675/AllanHG/Nordic%20Cycling%20Project/2015%20Volvo%20Sas/05-05-Giro-19-2_zps5539ec88.jpg
You know the drill by now: A break gets away – we don’t give a damn about anything but protecting Jakob.

Actually we appreciate the break quite a lot hoping that they will last to the finish thus preventing Antón from picking up any bonus seconds.

It seems some of the badly placed climbers have realized that since both Kruijswijk, Sicard, Taaramäe and Frank attack on the first mountains.
i1353.photobucket.com/albums/q675/AllanHG/Nordic%20Cycling%20Project/2015%20Volvo%20Sas/05-05-Giro-19-3_zpsfbe86f95.jpg
On the penultimate climb we see the first sign of weakness from Antón as he’s hanging in the back of the group. So Kessiakoff is told to give it his all pulling on front.

That makes Igor come straight to the front so Fredrik stops again.

On the top Sicard has 13 minutes to the favourites. A bit more than we like since he is only 13’36’’ behind…
i1353.photobucket.com/albums/q675/AllanHG/Nordic%20Cycling%20Project/2015%20Volvo%20Sas/05-05-Giro-19-4_zps15754da1.jpg
Antón puts in one of his usual strong attacks with 11 km to go. Jakob tries to join but has to give up and fins his own rhythm for the remainder of the mountain.

The Spaniard wins some more time yet again, but at least no bonus seconds.

That puts Fuglsang 4 seconds behind Antón with a mountain stage and a time trial to come.

Stage 20: Bormio – Ponte di Legno - Tonale
i1353.photobucket.com/albums/q675/AllanHG/Nordic%20Cycling%20Project/2015%20Volvo%20Sas/05-05-Giro-20-1_zpsa3067909.jpg
A really hard mountain stage. With the TT coming up tomorrow the goal will be to avoid losing too much time to Antón.

i1353.photobucket.com/albums/q675/AllanHG/Nordic%20Cycling%20Project/2015%20Volvo%20Sas/05-05-Giro-20-2_zps4b8bfc7e.jpg
Thanks to great work by at first Cofidis, but the last 15 km Alex, Gustav and Lars we manage to sneak Fuglsang first over the first intermediate sprint winning him six bonus seconds, thus putting him back in the virtual lead.

After the “sprint” a group of riders with no GC-importance get away with our blessing.
i1353.photobucket.com/albums/q675/AllanHG/Nordic%20Cycling%20Project/2015%20Volvo%20Sas/05-05-Giro-20-3_zps30700f3c.jpg
Antón attacks on the final bits of the penultimate climb, but with a descent as long as this one there’s no escaping Fuglsang.
i1353.photobucket.com/albums/q675/AllanHG/Nordic%20Cycling%20Project/2015%20Volvo%20Sas/05-05-Giro-20-4_zps6c6bf655.jpg
To no surprise Antón is off again as soon as the roads starts rising. Jakob has learnt his lesson and avoids the accelerations.

And rightly so. With 4,5 km to the top he is reunited with Antón an still looking strong.
i1353.photobucket.com/albums/q675/AllanHG/Nordic%20Cycling%20Project/2015%20Volvo%20Sas/05-05-Giro-20-5_zps4311f0eb.jpg
Antón is clever and attacks just as Jakob is boxed in so he can’t move. Fuglsang does his usual thing for a while but goes all in for the final 1,5 km.
i1353.photobucket.com/albums/q675/AllanHG/Nordic%20Cycling%20Project/2015%20Volvo%20Sas/05-05-Giro-20-6_zps637e1dfc.jpg
As usual Antón is better uphill, but will 24 seconds advantage be enough going in to the final TT?

Apart from the duel it’s worth noticing that Quintana lost quite a lot of time today and with it the youth jersey.

Damn it Anton. But go Fuglsang. :

he is superior in the TT right?

sutty: Can't blame the man for trying Wink

Marcovdw: It is certainly the most important TT in his life!

Miguel: He will do his best to take back the jersey on the final stage. Hopefully Antón will get nervous remembering that he has lost the pink jersey on the final TT before...

welker: He is better on paper, but the TT is hilly and short, so I expect him to beat Antón by 15-30 seconds depending on the daily form of the two...

Stage 21: Verona (ITT)
i1353.photobucket.com/albums/q675/AllanHG/Nordic%20Cycling%20Project/2015%20Volvo%20Sas/05-05-Giro-21-1_zps5f436257.jpg
No Hollywood screenwriter could have written this better. Only 24 seconds separate Fuglsang and Antón. Fuglsang is the better TT’er, but 15 km isn’t a lot to work with.

i1353.photobucket.com/albums/q675/AllanHG/Nordic%20Cycling%20Project/2015%20Volvo%20Sas/05-05-Giro-21-2_zps389bb42f.jpg
Alex is our first rider on the route, so he won’t have the benefit of the others advice. Still he sets best time beating Boom by 12 seconds. 23’17’’ is the time to beat today!

Alex is aiming for the Worlds TT-Championships later this year and beating Cancellara by 11 seconds sure is a confidence-booster.

Surprisingly the first rider to beat Alex is Christopher Juul-Jensen, who is perfectly matched by Bøchman.

Antóns trusty helper Geniez pull of a once-in-a-lifetime TT setting new best time.

Time for the final duel.
Fuglsang gets best time on the first intermediate on top of the hill. Antón is 21 seconds slower at this point.

On the second it has shrinked to 17 seconds.

Fuglsang is fastest in goal in 22’22’’
Igor Antón rides in 22’52’’

Young Rider Classification
Quintana looked like he had this one in the bag. That is until he had one bad day one stage 20. Kelderman had a bad start with a crash in stage 2, but fought his way back to earn the white jersey.

Team Classification
Nissan had plenty of captains and with three riders in the top 10 the team classification was never in question.

That was an extraordinary good and thrilling race for us.

A great team effort early on gave Fuglsang an edge and with great support from especially Kessiakoff, Bøchman and Juul-Jensen on the climbs he was able to minimize his losses just enough to be able to cheat the best climber for the win.

On top of that we have to remember how things went on in teh final flat stage - the stage where we stole 45 extremely valuable seconds by having Larsson, Bak and Rasmussen first attack with Fuglsang on his wheel then pulling very hard until they were completely empty and Fuglsang could take full advantage of the gap.

Not to forget the intermediate sprints he was delivered by the team. 6 seconds here and 4 seconds there can amount to a Grand Tour win...
