GC
Andy Schleck wins his first GT. Igor Antón, although not in his best shape thanks to many race days, takes the 2nd place, after already winning the Giro this year. Juan José Cobo focussed completely at this race, and with 2 stage wins and a 3rd in the GC, he and his Nespresso-team can be happy.

Points
With all these hilly and mountain stages, the GC-contenders also take the podium in the points-ranking. Being the most consistent, Andy Schleck wins it, thereby securing a sponsor goal.

Review
After 21 stages, with some surprising winners, the Vuelta has ended. Was it a fantastic Vuelta? No, not really. The field wasn't extremely strong (no Evans, Contador, Nibali, Sammy Sanchez or Gesink), but still strong enough to make it an entertaining one. The tension for the GC wasn't for the first place, as Andy Schleck was too strong. The battle for th epodium places was a dramatic one, with Juan José Cobo being the poor guy because of a crash in the last corner of the last stage.
One remarkable thing, was the low amount of mass sprints. Only 3 stages ended in a mass sprint, with the wins being divided.

Positive top 5

img62.imageshack.us/img62/7159/1andy.jpg
Andy Schleck won 3 stages and was 15 days in the leaders jersey. He was for sure THE man in this Vuelta.

img18.imageshack.us/img18/8674/2antn.jpg
Igor Antón won one stage, the one to Lagos de Covadonga, and finished many times in the top 3. The amount of race days, 84 at the end of the Vuelta, 24 more than Schleck, was to much for the winner of the Giro.

img827.imageshack.us/img827/3360/3cobo.jpg
Juan José Cobo has focussed his season completely at the Vuelta, and it paid off. He won 2 stages, to Avila and the final ITT, and was about to end in 2nd place in the GC, untill that last turn...

img189.imageshack.us/img189/3291/4frank.jpg
The elder brother had to see the younger one winning a GT. But with one stage win, to Aramón Cerler, many top 3 places, and in the end a 5th in the GC, Fränk Schleck can look back at a good Vuelta. Too bad the crash in the last stage made him drop from 4th.

img20.imageshack.us/img20/7756/5cavendish.jpg
Why Mark Cavendish here? He only won one stage? Yes, but the world champ took revenge after a horrible Tour with that stage win, only one of the 3 chances for sprinters.

Negatives Top 5

img252.imageshack.us/img252/3104/6menchov.jpg
Starting as one of the favourites, and finishing in 16th in the GC.... This for sure was a very weak Vuelta for Denis Menchov. Is this the end of his career?

img29.imageshack.us/img29/9234/7rodriguez.jpg
Joaquím Rodríguez has become the liven proof that 98 racedyas, including the Giro, Tour and Vuelta, are to much in one cycling season. Being one of the better hilly riders, he never had a chance for a stage win.

img844.imageshack.us/img844/7636/8rojas.jpg
Being the best current Spanish sprinter, riding a GT in your home country, and not even a top 3 finish.... Why did Garmin even sign José Joaquín Rojas?

img707.imageshack.us/img707/6959/9intxausti.jpg
Benat Intxausti is thé Spanish GT-talent, but finishing in 18th place is pretty weak.... Just like many others, he wasn't fresh anymore after a long season.

And finally, all the sprinters teams. 21 stages, 3 mass sprints... Nothing more to say.

While the riders in Vuelta had finished the penultimate stage, on th eother side of the ocean was another World Tour race. The Grand Prix de cycliste de Québec has it's 2nd edition. Last year was won by Andy Schleck.
imageshack.us/a/img37/3096/2schleck.jpgimageshack.us/a/img515/5479/32011.jpg

The race is held at a 12.6 kilometre hilly circuit and 15 laps make up for 189 kilometres and 2790 height metres.

The favourites
*** Robert Gesink, Michele Scarponi (BMC), Chris Anker Sorensen (Saxo)
** Paul Martens (Rabobank), Sandy Casar (FDJ), Christophe Riblon (Garmin)
* Michel Kreder (Garmin), Peter Sagan, Johnny Hoogerland (Vacansoleil)

Our goal
Considering it's a fairly weak start field in Québec, and Robert Gesink is in a god shape, we go for the win.

The race

186km to go
The race starts under dry weather conditions and immediately a big group tries to break away. 8 riders, including Jean-Christophe Peraud (AG2R), Dario Cioni (Sky) and Steve Morabito (BMC). They are able to create a gap of just over a minute to the peloton, but are get caught within 10 kilometres.
imageshack.us/a/img72/8903/6186km.jpg

172km to go
One group is caught, an other group of riders tries to attack. This time there are 7 riders in this breakaway, with Peraud and Cioni again in it, being very actiev, as well as Fred Rodriguez (Garmin) and the Canadian champion Svein Tuft (Qantas).
imageshack.us/a/img513/1558/7172km.jpg

65km to go
That group gets caught as well, but the third one to try it, is succesful in creating a big margin to the peloton. 9 riders create a margin of 4'32: Pablo Urtasun (Euskaltel), Svein Tuft, Jurgen Vandewalle (Lotto), Antonio Santoro (Androni), Matthew Busche (Radio Shack), Danilo Di Luca (Katusha), Matteo Carrara (Vacansoleil), Cyril Gautier (Europcar) and again Jean-Christophe Peraud.
imageshack.us/a/img39/2537/865km.jpg

30km to go
The domestiques of BMC and Monster Energy lead the chase in the peloton. Working for their leaders Scarponi and Gesink, the margin to the leading 9 is decreased to 1'30 with 30km to go.
imageshack.us/a/img12/5021/930km.jpg

23km to go
Having entered the penultimate lap, the peloton catches the breakaway in the descending part of the route, just before reaching the Fleuve Saint-Laurent. We try to keep the pace high, to drop as many riders as possible and to prevent new attacks.
imageshack.us/a/img213/2919/1023km.jpg

12km to go
Niki Terpstra is doing one great job, keeping the pace that high, that no attacks have occured. The peloton enters the last lap, still 28 riders big.
imageshack.us/a/img12/5831/1112km.jpg

11km to go
Starting the descending Avenue Georges VI, Michele Scarponi is the first of the favourites to attack. Only Michel Kreder (Garmin) counters. Is it a wise move, to attack before the descend?
imageshack.us/a/img585/6745/1211km.jpg

5km to go
No it wasn't. Along the river at the Boulevard Champlain, Scarponi and Kreder get caught, with still the ascending part of the circuit to go.
imageshack.us/a/img571/8931/135km.jpg

2km to go
Peter Sagan, already being too exhausted to sprint for the win, works his ass of for Robert Gesink in the climb. Then with less than 2km to go, Gesink attacks, and nobody can follow. Only Sandy Casar can stay close, but it won't be enough.
imageshack.us/a/img72/5610/141500m.jpg

Finish
Without difficulty, Robert Gesink takes the win in the Grand Prix cycliste de Québec, and becomes the successor of his team mate Andy Schleck.
Christophe Riblon (Garmin) surprises with the 2nd place, beating Paul Martens (Rabobank) in the sprint.

The next stop in Canada is the Grand Prix de cycliste de Montréal. It's also the 2nd edition, with last year Andy Schleck being the winner, and taking the Canadian double.
img811.imageshack.us/img811/3096/2schleck.jpgimg14.imageshack.us/img14/5479/32011.jpg

The race is being held at a 12.1 kilometre circuit in the city of Montréal. Every lap, the Cote de Camilien-Houde (1.8km at 8.1%) has to be climb, which means an altitude difference of 229metres each lap. 16 laps make up for 194 kilometres and a total altitude difference of 3664 metres. The last part of each lap is pretty flat.

The race

137km to go
Just as yesterday in Québec, many riders try to get in the BOTD. These groups are always too big, so the peloton catches them again. Just as this group of 15, with Talansky (Radio Shack), Duggan (Liquigas), Mayoz (Euskaltel) and Morabito (BMC) in it as the most famous names.
img442.imageshack.us/img442/5474/6137km.jpg

104km to go
It's no surprise that a small breakaway gets the blessing from the peloton. Jan Kuyckx (Lotto), Matteo Carrara (Vacansoleil), Guillaume Bonnafond (AG2R) and, again, Andrew Talansky (Radio Shack) for a breakaway of 4 riders and create a margin to the peloton of 1 minute pretty quickly.
img515.imageshack.us/img515/1082/7104km.jpg

60km to go
3 other riders make the transfer from the peloton to the leading group: Pieter Weening (Qantas), Chris Barton (Sony Ericsson) and Valerio Agnoli (Liquigas). The 7 have a margin of 3'11 to Jan Bakelandts (Lotto), who tried to make the transfer as well, and 5'48 to the peloton. The domestiques of BMC and Movistar do the pace in the peloton.
img641.imageshack.us/img641/7648/860km.jpg

22km to go
In the penultimate ascend of the Cote de Camilien-Houde, the leadinggroup splits. Pieter Weening is doing the pace, and only Barton, Carrara and Agnoli can follow him. At this point, the peloton is still 2'38 behind.
img593.imageshack.us/img593/7200/922km.jpg

12km to go
The pace drops in the peloton, has suddenly the domestiques of Movistar and BMC stop chasing the leading group. We try to set up a new chase, but as a result, the leading group of 4 has entered the last lap with a margin of still 2'29.
img543.imageshack.us/img543/5491/1012km.jpg

5km to go
Instead of cooperating in the climb, the only thing riders in the peloton do, is keep on attacking. So attacks by Scarponi, Casar, Riblon and Sorensen are all without effort. The leading 4 can keep a margin, although it has decreased to '54, that will be safe enough for the win.
Robert Gesink launches an attack at the smaller Cote de la Polytechnique, but that one gets countered immediately by Egor Silin (Katusha).
img851.imageshack.us/img851/9641/115km.jpg

1km to go
Meanwhile, the sprint for the win has started. Chris Barton is in the worst position. He leads out Carrara, Weening and Agnoli.
img214.imageshack.us/img214/8387/121km.jpg

Finish
Carrara takes over, but has started his jump too early. Dutch Pieter Weening, possibly the worst sprinter of the 4, has the most energy left and takes the win in Montréal, in front of Carrara, Agnoli and Barton.
The peloton follows at 19 seconds. Gesink couldn't create a gap, so decides to stop riding and help his team mate Peter Sagan in the sprint. But the Slovakian is dead empty and has settle with the 14th place. The sprint of the peloton, 34 riders!, is won by Enrico Gasparotto, followed by Gianni Meersman and Paul Martens.

Word from the DS
Not a good race. Our team wasn't strong enough to catch the breakaway. And after that, we stood no chance in the sprint. Luckily, we have the memory of the win in Québec.

We take part in the Grand Prix de Wallonie, a hilly classics in the Ardennes. With the short and steep climbs, and the finish at the Citadelle de Namur (1.9km at 5.8%), the race features as an ideal preparation for the World Championship.
Last year, the race was won by Jelle Vanendert.

Our team
img841.imageshack.us/img841/7967/5team.jpg

The favourites
*** Andy Schleck, Chris Horner (Lotto), Gianni Meersman (FDJ)
** Carlos Barredo (Rabobank), Jelle Vanendert, Sandy Casar (FDJ)
* Christophe Riblon (Garmin), Matti Breschel (Rabobank), Matthias Frank (BMC)

Our goal
Just as last year, the win.

The race

20km to go
We send Jack Bobridge in today's BOTD, with the goal not having to chase the breakaway. He finds himself in a decently strong breakaway, among riders as Alexandre Geniez (M&M's), Jose Mendes (CCC), Jempy Drucker (Accent.Jobs) and Andreas Stauff (Omega Pharma). The maximum margin to the peloton is 5 minutes, and when the start the first of final 3 climbs, it has decreased to 1'49.
img534.imageshack.us/img534/8610/620km.jpg

12km to go
The BOTD breaks into pieces, and Bobridge unfortunately can't follow the fastest climbers in it. Starting the penultimate climb, only Drucker, Geniez and Mendes are up front. Jose Mendes attacks, and only Drucker can follow.
A group of 8 with Vandewalle, Meersman and Barredo follows at 1'28, and the peloton at 1'48.
img51.imageshack.us/img51/9207/712km.jpg

3km to go
Mendes blows his legs up, so Drucker takes over. The Luxembourg rider from Accent.Jobs starts the final clim in Namur, up to the Citadelle. He has a margin of '20 to Mendes and 1'29 to the chasing peloton (all together), so he looks almost certain of the win.
img834.imageshack.us/img834/9818/83kmq.jpg

1km to go
Drucker sets a high pace in the final climb and still leads the peloton by 1'05. Even great work from Jelle Vanendert can't bring them closer.
img827.imageshack.us/img827/3887/91km.jpg

Finish
A tired, happy and relieved Jempy Drucker takes his first win of the season, and gets awarded for all these attacks he has done this season! Mendes takes the 2nd place at '40, and Fabio Polazzi (Wallonie) wins the sprint of the peloton at '48. Vanendert finishes in 4th, and Schleck in 6th.
