Criterium International stage 2

www.procyclingstats.com/races/profilesmaps/2014-03/Criterium-International-Stage-2-ITT-1395863820.jpg

45 riders have started the time-trial already and it is Engoulvent (Sojasun) who holds the lead. Malori, one of the favourites for the stage win, is about to start now.

i1298.photobucket.com/albums/ag59/CEriksie/Pcmdaily%20EPIC/Criterium%20International/stage%202/CritInt%20stage%202%20p1_zpsx7prhpee.jpg

He goes through the first time check in first place with a time of 4'21. He is also the fastest at the finish line so far. His time is 10'23, 23 seconds in front of Engoulvent.

Marouane Shaqif is on the road now. The Tunisian champion of MTN goes through the halfway point 9 seconds slower than Malori. He loses another 12 seconds in the second part and is 3rd for now.

i1298.photobucket.com/albums/ag59/CEriksie/Pcmdaily%20EPIC/Criterium%20International/stage%202/CritInt%20stage%202%20p2_zpslymdiovk.jpg

Tom Dumoulin is off. He should be able to get close to Malori's time. But he does not come close, as he loses 8 seconds in the first part already. At the finish line he lost more time and finishes 2nd, 17 seconds behind Malori.

i1298.photobucket.com/albums/ag59/CEriksie/Pcmdaily%20EPIC/Criterium%20International/stage%202/CritInt%20stage%202%20p3_zpsutglttym.jpg

Giant's other hope for the stage win, Tobias Ludvigsson is already 14 seconds behind at the intermediate time check. He finishes 14th, 29 seconds behind Malori.

i1298.photobucket.com/albums/ag59/CEriksie/Pcmdaily%20EPIC/Criterium%20International/stage%202/CritInt%20stage%202%20p4_zpspjflpgcy.jpg

Quite a surprise here as Movistar's Machado comes through in 2nd at the halfway stage. He's 8 seconds slower than Malori though. His time at the finish is 4'33 and he is in 2nd place at the moment. Well done!

i1298.photobucket.com/albums/ag59/CEriksie/Pcmdaily%20EPIC/Criterium%20International/stage%202/CritInt%20stage%202%20p5_zpsjlhgzxga.jpg

And another rider doing quite well. Coppel goes a second faster than Machado on the first part. He keeps going and finishes one second faster than Machado.

i1298.photobucket.com/albums/ag59/CEriksie/Pcmdaily%20EPIC/Criterium%20International/stage%202/CritInt%20stage%202%20p6_zpsye74oxra.jpg

One of the contenders for the overall GC, Lipawsky, has to attack in the mountains, because he loses 1'08 on Malori here.

i1298.photobucket.com/albums/ag59/CEriksie/Pcmdaily%20EPIC/Criterium%20International/stage%202/CritInt%20stage%202%20p7_zpsdblylhzc.jpg

Sylvain Chavanel, top favourite for the win, is not doing great. He loses 10 seconds to Malori on the first half of the stage. He loses another 10 seconds on the second part and finishes 20 seconds behind.

i1298.photobucket.com/albums/ag59/CEriksie/Pcmdaily%20EPIC/Criterium%20International/stage%202/CritInt%20stage%202%20p8_zpsf554xqwm.jpg

Anders Myrvold, a young lad from Norway, comes through at the first time check in 5th. He's 9 seconds behind Malori. More seconds get added in the last part and he finishes in 5th with a time of 10'43.

i1298.photobucket.com/albums/ag59/CEriksie/Pcmdaily%20EPIC/Criterium%20International/stage%202/CritInt%20stage%202%20p9_zpsopzfomul.jpg

Last year's winner Thomas Hinault is underway now. It doesn't look like he has worked much on his time-trial skills during the winter though. He loses 1'06 here.

i1298.photobucket.com/albums/ag59/CEriksie/Pcmdaily%20EPIC/Criterium%20International/stage%202/CritInt%20stage%202%20p10_zpscysxtk7l.jpg

French champion Peraud has come through the time check 9 seconds slower than Malori. He is 22 seconds slower at the finish line.

i1298.photobucket.com/albums/ag59/CEriksie/Pcmdaily%20EPIC/Criterium%20International/stage%202/CritInt%20stage%202%20p11_zpse3badlze.jpg

Kusnezov has come the closest to Malori's intermediate time so far. Only 3 seconds separate them, although Malori had a fast finish too. Kusnezov can't keep up the speed and finishes in 10'31.

i1298.photobucket.com/albums/ag59/CEriksie/Pcmdaily%20EPIC/Criterium%20International/stage%202/CritInt%20stage%202%20p12_zpssbdu2tdp.jpg

Belkin might switch leaders after today, because Kelderman has just come through at the intermediate time check. He is 3 seconds slower than team-mate Malori. He comes through at the finish line in 10'34.

i1298.photobucket.com/albums/ag59/CEriksie/Pcmdaily%20EPIC/Criterium%20International/stage%202/CritInt%20stage%202%20p13_zpsugdgidke.jpg

Or why not go with 2 leaders. Mollema is 6 seconds slower than Malori at the halfway stage. He loses a few more seconds and finishes 14 seconds behind Malori.

i1298.photobucket.com/albums/ag59/CEriksie/Pcmdaily%20EPIC/Criterium%20International/stage%202/CritInt%20stage%202%20p14_zpsvpxwcc56.jpg

NetApp's Arndt is only 7 seconds slower than Malori at the time check. He finishes 8th so far, 19 seconds behind.

GC favourite Quintana loses 14 seconds at the halfway point. He is still looking good at the finish, only losing 32 seconds.

i1298.photobucket.com/albums/ag59/CEriksie/Pcmdaily%20EPIC/Criterium%20International/stage%202/CritInt%20stage%202%20p15_zpsp69r7dvr.jpg

Race leader Danny van Poppel is losing his jersey to Malori, as he finishes in 10'56.

Schleck is still in range for a top 5 or a podium with some luck. Smile

But now Basso is beating Lipawsky Shock Hopefully he still gets to be a co-leader or at least have free element status in the mountains.

So what level does that put you on if you have to work for him? (please PCM, give him at least free element status he is a much better climber)

What if you're a sprinter?

Ouch Algarve took a bit of a hit on last stage - that said Arredondo wasn't going to get that higher GC position anyways so grabbing another stage 2nd place will do.

Arre gets another chance to impress though at Catalunya. No TT to sap his GC but of course a more elite startlist!

Stage 2

i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t605/Atlantius_PCM/EPIC/EP-Panne-2-%201_zps0lfhixtn.jpg
There's a tiny bit of cobbles on this one, but nothing that should pose a problem to anyone really.

i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t605/Atlantius_PCM/EPIC/EP-Panne-2-%202_zpsx5zauzpe.jpg
After a bit of a struggle seven rider get clear: Selvaggi, Vansummeren, Nys, Favilli, Florencio, Wynants and Hayman.
With several of the big teams represented it could be an interesting group.
With 100 km to go the gap is 5'21
i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t605/Atlantius_PCM/EPIC/EP-Panne-2-%203_zpsuyd9y4oz.jpg
Number 2, 3 and 4 in the GC are all pretty poorly placed on the first small cobbled hill.
The peloton cracked slightly but the many Euskaltel riders surrounding Verboven quickly closed the gap on the tarmac.
i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t605/Atlantius_PCM/EPIC/EP-Panne-2-%204_zpsmyssl9sz.jpg
It's worth adding that it's surprisingly Champion Systems that set the hard pace in the peloton, which also results in the gap for the break going down to 4'28 with 85 km left.
70 km and 3'38
60 km and 2'49
i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t605/Atlantius_PCM/EPIC/EP-Panne-2-%205_zpssxndtfdd.jpg
It's mainly BMC leading over the second set of cobbles, but with no hill and all the big names near the front nothing dramatic happens.
50 km and 2'58
But then all of a sudden the peloton cracks anyway dropping GC 6th Hägg and 48 other riders.
The first intermediate is won by Favilli ahead of Florencio and Hayman.
The second sprint is won by Wynants ahead of Florencio and Hayman.
30 km and 1'54
i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t605/Atlantius_PCM/EPIC/EP-Panne-2-%206_zpsku2lcocw.jpg
Third and final intermediate goes to Wynants ahead of Selvaggi and Florencio.
i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t605/Atlantius_PCM/EPIC/EP-Panne-2-%207_zps4ld1chjt.jpg
With the others tired after the sprint and the peloton closing in Vansummeren and Nys manages to slip away.
With 15 km to go they have 39 second to the rest of the break and a further minute to the peloton.
Nys goes solo.
With 5 km to go this is the situation:
i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t605/Atlantius_PCM/EPIC/EP-Panne-2-%208_zpsnfhn7xx0.jpg
i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t605/Atlantius_PCM/EPIC/EP-Panne-2-%209_zpsom9w64re.jpg
Alf Pedersen attacks out of the peloton with just over 3 km to go.
i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t605/Atlantius_PCM/EPIC/EP-Panne-2-%2010_zpsu7fxpz7i.jpg
That triggers a long and chaotic sprint where Greipel is looking strong powering away from the others and reaching Pedersen at the 1 km mark.
i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t605/Atlantius_PCM/EPIC/EP-Panne-2-%2011_zpsxbody2ec.jpg
Nys looks like he has nothing more to offer but will it be enough?
i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t605/Atlantius_PCM/EPIC/EP-Panne-2-%2012_zpshasbdo53.jpg
He makes it for a highly surprising but equally deserved win after a harder day than expected by most.
i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t605/Atlantius_PCM/EPIC/EP-Panne-2-%2013_zpsywrta4q2.jpg
Greipel is a clear second while the rest is quite messy all over the road.

The big loser of the day is Hägg, who loses a place in teh GC top 10 even though it would have been miracoulous had he been able to defend it on the final ITT.
