Stage 5
A meaningless 4 man break went away early on but the stage got interesting as 19 riders used the wind to get clear of the peleton - and were then allowed to create a gap.

In the front group of 10 are: Franzoi, Horrillo, Friedemann, Bennati and Theo Bos (Lampre), S. Sanchez (Astanba), Ortega (Saunier Duval), Steurs (Predictor), Giling (Liquigas), Rosseler (Quick Step), while in the group of 9 not far behind are: Halgand, Hivert, Zaballa, Lemoine, Pauriol, Charteau and Hushovd (Credit Agricole), Nuyens (CSC) and Blanco (Caisse d'Epargne).
So all in all, some strong riders are involved - but the presence of Sanchez and Ortega is a worry. I would be happy to let these riders get away comfortably but at 6'08 and 7'06 behind Pliuschin respectively.

So when the gap got to around 7 minutes, Sulzberger, Perez and Chtioui went forward to control the gap, later helped by Ag2r and Gerolsteiner

The early break of 4 was caught as the two large groups up front came together, Rosseler tries to attack away.

But in the following moves, it is Thor Hushovd who is clear

Chasing him are Sanchez, Rosseler ... and Theo Bos!

Steurs and Giling come across to join them but with 9km to go, Bos at lasts starts to struggle

Hushovd is still in the lead though and even if he does get caught by the chasers, he will still outsprint them. He isnt going to be caugh though, as he wins solo

Rosseler takes 2nd with Steurs 3rd ahead of Sanchez. Theo Bos finished 6th

Pliuschin finishes near the front of the peleton. 6'38 behind Hushovd but only 5'22 behind Sanchez so he stays in the race lead

Stage 6
Its a so-called hilly stage

Paolo Bettini and Nicki Sorensen are the break

But they are caught before the finish

Its another one of those 1km darts to the line, and Pliuschin makes sure that he is near the front

Carlos Sastre outsprints Nocentini to win, with Pliuschin 3rd

Looks like you may well be on your way to a big victory in the Vuelta.
And Sastre outsprinting a big group. I love PCM sometimes. |

Stage 7
Another hilly stage and Bettini in the break again. He, Posthuma, Steurs and Zaballa were the strongest of the break.

Bettini wears the KoM jersey today as Pliuschin cannot, but the Italian picks up enough points to lead the competition outright.
None of the 4 were any serious threat overall and were allowed to stay away. Unsurprisingly, Bettini won the sprint - but Belgium Champion Steurs very nearly caught him out with an early move

Why didn't you chase down Sanchez? I'm not criticising your option, I'm just trying to understand.
Is he out of form, is it because Heras is his leader or aren't his stats just any good?

Well for a start - he was already 6 minutes down so unlikely to be a threat. And yes Heras appears to be the leader of the Astana team which also includes Rodas and Cunego.
Also, with stats off 77 MO, and 67 TT (As well as 80 Hill), he is unlikely to be a huge threat. Besides theres the fact that it would have taken a huge effort to chase them down, so i was contempt with just making sure of keeping the leaders jersey |

Stage 9

Igor Anton put in an attack 9km from the top of the 2nd climb

But unfortunately all of the big favourites countered, so Pliuschin would have to too

Ricco is going strong today

The Barloworld rider has a good advantage over Pliuschin, Anton, LL Sanchez, Sastre and Pereiro going into the descent, but the chasers push hard with Anton at times struggling to keep up

Ricco has extended his gap though

And takes the stage

Pliuschin takes 2nd, 1'47 behind Ricco, to keep his race lead
