If I keep this up I might. You can tell from the previous winners in each race that I don't tend to win very often in the early season. I fare much better from about the Tour de Romandie until the end of the Tour de France then don't do much the last couple of months (although I have had a few decent Vuelta's). To have this much success in the first four months is unusual for me.

Stage 5: Santurtzi ITT
i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Pais%20Vasco/PCM0009.jpg

16km ITT today. Rovny already has this wrapped up unless something very strange happens. Sui will be trying to stay in the top 10 which may be tough given he is a terrible time trialist.

First strong time of the day comes from Mazur at 20'30. Not good enough in the end, though: +29 (13th).
i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Pais%20Vasco/PCM0011-2.jpg

Kraaybeek tops Mazur's time and will finish +11 (4th).
i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Pais%20Vasco/PCM0013-1.jpg

Vandborg is really flying and sets teh best mark at 20'01. It will hold up and he will end up taking the stage.
i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Pais%20Vasco/PCM0014-2.jpg

Tony Martin, +12 (5th).
i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Pais%20Vasco/PCM0015-2.jpg

Boasson Hagen, +20 (7th).
i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Pais%20Vasco/PCM0017-2.jpg

Now for the top 4 starting with Safonov: +1'02 (57th).
i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Pais%20Vasco/PCM0018-1.jpg

Rovira, +1'04 (68th).
i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Pais%20Vasco/PCM0019.jpg

Pereiro, +46 (32nd).
i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Pais%20Vasco/PCM0020.jpg

Rovny, +33 (16th).
i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Pais%20Vasco/PCM0021.jpg

So Rovny wraps up a great tour, taking overall, points and youth rankings and improving on his 4th place finish here last year. He is without a doubt one of the best puncheurs out there at the moment. The upcoming hilly classics should be interesting given he is on top form.

Sui slips out of the top 10, however Vandborg jumps into the top 10 on his time trial win.

Contracts

Time to begin considering contract renewals as they will need to be made within the next month plus. This is a transition year for us as the number of riders who don't have contracts with us for next season far exceeds the number that do.

We are 43,000 euros per month under our salary budget at the moment. I've not edited the salary budget at all. What I have done in the last couple of seasons, however, is release highly paid top racers in favor of young, up and coming guys. So, out went the likes of Thomas Dekker, Gomez Marchante, Thomas Rohregger, etc. In came guys like John Lee Augustyn, Ivan Rovny, Markus Reich. I've also mixed in neophytes who have been hit or miss, and veterans who are on the downslide and therefore draw smaller salaries.

Challenge in renewals is that some of the guys we've had are now superstars in their own right. Whereas Ivan Ronvy, for example, is quite affordable at the moment; i have no doubt he will be looking for a team leader role and a big contract. Therefore, we probabably could not re-sign all of these guys even if we wanted to. We're a bit heavy on sprinters and time trialists this season and light on mountain support so will address that.

Expiring contracts and preliminary thoughts are as follows:

Andy Schleck: Plan to re-sign him as I need at least one TdF hopeful at any given point in time.

Bjorn Leukemans: He is past his prime and we'll probably let him go.

Brian Vandborg: With the development of Reich and Sestili he is expendable.

Fumiyuki Beppu: I love this guy, he stays.

Frederik Nolf: Unlikely we can afford him and we have good alternatives. Probably leaves.

Heinrich Haussler: Definitely will re-sign.

Ivan Rovny: A top target for re-signing if we can afford his demands.

Jason Donald: One of our few Americans; he stays.

Kristoffer Nielsen: Should be inexpensive to re-sign and remains a development project. Has potential as a top cobblestone specialist.

Lars Boom: In the likely event we can't re-sign Nolf, Boom might be his replacement if his development keeps up.

Linus Gerdemann: Cheap and effective in the mountains, he stays.

Luigi Sestili: Fast becoming one of the top time trialists, with Vandborg leaving, he stays.

Mauricio Ardila: Will wait on him to see if his skills are sliding. If not, will keep him.

Mark Cavendish: Brought in on a one-season contract at low cost when he had no other options. No way we can afford to keep him, though so he is definitely gone.

Markus Reich: Same as Sestili, he stays.

Roman Feillu: The guy has never done anything for us except whine. Can't stand him, he is gone.

Thierry Lamborelle: Cheap help on cobblestones and stays.

Thomas Lovkvist: Been a bit disappointed with his progress. Seems to be in decline already. He's gone.

Yaroslav Popovych: Aging but good role player, he stays.

One of the top goals, when July comes, will be to attract more Americans to the team. Our sponsors would like to see us look a bit more American than we currently do.

Past Winners
2007: Alessandro Ballan (Lampre)
2008: Matti Breschel (CSC)
2009: George Hincapie (Discovery Channel)
2010: Leif Hoste (Predictor Lotto)
2011: Yuri Trofimov (Astana)
2012: Gianni Meersman (Discovery Channel)

Our greatest moment in this race was 2009 when the four riders who had over a minute lead on Hincapie (which included Boonen) went down in a mass crash 10-15 km from the finish, allowing Hincapie to waltz in for the win.

We won last year, but that was with no real competition present. This season looks the same. Another boring cobblestone race with no competitors. Massive disappointment as this is one of my favorite races.

In the end it was not quite as boring as expected, though. Only 103 started and only 58 would finish. One of those who would not finish was Frederik Nolf. Hoping for the win, he crashed on wet cobblestones.
i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Cobblestones/PCM0023.jpg

His teammates brought him back to the peloton, but as soon as the pace increased he could not keep up. It was clear his day was done so he pulled off to the side.
i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Cobblestones/PCM0024.jpg

As Discovery Channel led the peloton, the list of riders who could not keep up kept growing. Eventually it was only: Boom, Haussler, Meersman, Nielsen along with Hassink, Gaudin and Poulhies.
i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Cobblestones/PCM0025.jpg

The 7 stayed together into the velodrome where Poulhies made the first move.
i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Cobblestones/PCM0026.jpg

Haussler saw it coming and countered by starting his sprint early.
i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Cobblestones/PCM0027.jpg

Haussler would hold on for the win. Poulhies takes second.

You mean post the startlists here? I think I have done for the most part, just that I didn't consider the cobblestone races big anymore given the disaster the AI made of selecting teams. Based on my experience from last season, once we hit May things will go back to normal and the fields for the remaining big races will be competitive.

If I run into the same thing in 2014 then I will abandon this career and either go back to 2006 (PPDB Giant) or break down and buy 2009 (if I can get comfortable that it will run on this laptop).

I think my team has sold their souls to the devil. Even when we lose, we win. Will become more evident when I post Tour de Georgia results.

April is not even over yet and I've already nearly matched my 2012 win total.

Tour de Georgia

Past Winners
2007: David Zabriskie (CSC)

2009: Dries Devenyas (Predictor Lotto)
2010: Thomas Dekker (Discovery Channel)
2011: John Lee Augustyn (Discovery Channel)
2012: Vladimir Karpets (Saunier Duval)

We generally do well here as, typically, we have one of the strongest teams present. Nevertheless, unimportant race for us so short summaries here.

Stage 1: Peachtree City - Macon

Flat stage, extremely windy day. Discovery Channel is driving the peloton with winds at 65km/h when we get a split. We're on the right side of the split and it becomes a TTT all the way to the finish. High winds mean the slightest mistake is devastating and we lose guys along the way who aren't careful.

Lead group is only 4 by the time we get to the finish: Kluyev, Sui, Meersman and Nielsen. Nielsen falls off, Kluyev gets the win. Sui, Meersman and Kluyev only gain 28 seconds on the field as the officials harshly judge that the chasing pack finished on the same time as Nielsen.
i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Tour%20de%20Georgia/PCM0004.jpg

Stage 2: Thomaston - Rome

Flat stage. Sui wins the sprint easily and takes over yellow from Kluyev.
i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Tour%20de%20Georgia/PCM0005.jpg

Stage 3: Rome - Chattanooga

Uphill sprint finish. Kohl takes the stage over Carrara. Meersman takes over yellow.
i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Tour%20de%20Georgia/PCM0006.jpg

Stage 4: Chickamauga - Lookout Mountain ITT

Vandborg absolutely crushes the field, taking the ITT by 1'10 over 2nd place. The Bouygues team bus is here although the Bouygues team isn't. Maybe explains why they are stuck in the Continental Tour. Meersman holds yellow over Vandborg by 4 seconds.
i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Tour%20de%20Georgia/PCM0009.jpg

Stage 5: Dalton - Brasstown Mountain

Mountain stage. Kohl is dominant, winning the stage by 1'32 and taking a 1'45 lead over Meersman in the overall.
i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Tour%20de%20Georgia/PCM0011.jpg

Stage 6: Lake Lanier - Stone Mountain Park

Sui picks up another sprint win. Standings hold firm with: 1. Kohl, 2. Meersman, 3. Carrara, 4. Casanova
i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Tour%20de%20Georgia/PCM0012.jpg

Stage 7: Atlanta Criterium

126km flat stage. Kohl only needs to stay upright. 8km from the finish he crashes. Same crash takes out 3rd place Carrara.
i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Tour%20de%20Georgia/PCM0028.jpg

Chavenel wins the sprint, and Discovery goes from 2nd and 4th place to 1st and 3rd (Kohl holds 2nd). It seems Discovery Channel just can't lose.

2012: Jonay Pereiro (CSC)

Valverde dominated this race for four years in a row, but age has caught up and he is no longer the force he once was. In his place is Ivan Rovny. Rovny has developed into one of the top 3 puncheurs in cycling and is the prohibitive favorite here this year. At Discovery Channel racing, never have we had anywhere near as good a chance at taking this race as we do this year.

The Contenders:

The guys trying to hold off Rovny include:

Jonay Pereiro: Last years winner is, talent wise, the second best racer here behind Rovny. The way he faded over the second half of the Vuelta Ciclista al Pais Vasco, however, calls into question his fitness levels and ability to compete here.

Edvald Boasson Hagen: The UCI Pro Tour points leader has been phenomenal this season so far. His ability in the hills combined with his explosive sprinting power makes him a real threat here.

Jaume Rovira: He too fared worse over the second half of the Pais Vasco race. Still, he is a dangerous puncheur and if on form will be tough here.

Rinaldo Nocentini: Milram team leader has the tools to take a win here.

Tony Martin: He has had a great season, but has been racing pretty much non-stop since early February. He had little impact at the Vuelta Cicilista al Pais Vasco so doubtful he will be resurgent here.

Rainy day in Maastricht today. Lots of action throughout the race. Attacks on almost every hill. Wtih 85km to go, the peloton was down to only 77 members.

With 56km to go, Rovira attacks. Bartelsen, Nocentini and Linden follow. Rovny is unsure of whether to go or not. Since Pereiro and Boasson Hagen have not countered, he stays in the pack.
i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/classics/PCM0013.jpg

Failli attacks and gets a 20 second lead over the Rovira group.
i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/classics/PCM0015.jpg

Rovira increases the pace and they come together to form a group.
i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/classics/PCM0016.jpg

With 40km to go, Rovny finally decides it is time to attack up a steep climb. It is a strong (flashing green) attack.
i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/classics/PCM0017.jpg

Rovny passes the Rovira group and is first over the top.
i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/classics/PCM0019.jpg

Boasson Hagen attacks up to the peak as well.
i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/classics/PCM0020.jpg

A six man chase group has now come together: Rovira, Nocentini, Bartlesen, Failli, Boasson Hagen and they have been joined by Blythe. Pereiro has still never attacked. Rovny is 37 seconds ahead and the gap is growing.
i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/classics/PCM0021.jpg

With 5km to go, Boasson Hagen attacks and leaves his group behind. He is only 18 seconds behind Rovny. His sprinting capabilities makes him very dangerous at this point.
i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/classics/PCM0022.jpg

Rovny increases the pace up the climb to the finish. With 1km to go he has rebuilt a 35 second lead but is on 3 red bars.
i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/classics/PCM0023.jpg

He makes it across the finish for the win.
i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/classics/PCM0024.jpg

Boasson Hagen has faded and his comrades have caught back up with him. Nocentini manages to pip him at the line for 2nd place.
i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/classics/PCM0026.jpg

As expected, a win for Rovny. It would have been a disappointment had he lost. Pereiro never attacked and is clearly not in top shape.

Great win. It should also be said that you did a great job putting this team together. I hope this story continues into 2025. Pfft

Thanks. It should get a whole lot tougher from May. No competition in the cobblestones makes things pretty easy there. Rovny is pretty dominant in the hills which means he should take a lot of the hilly races the same way Valverde has in previous seasons. Once we hit the mountainous stage races, though, the competition is really tough and things should get more exciting.

Past Winners

2007: Riccardo Ricco (Saunier Duval)
2008: Vincenzo Nibali (Liquigas)
2009: Andriy Grivko (Milram)
2010: Juanjo Cobo (CSC)
2011: Giancarlo Balsamo (Milram)
2012: Ivan Rovny (Discovery Channel)

This race has yielded some strange results over the year so don't know what to expect. This is the one hilly race where Valverde has not been dominant. Rovny gained his first major triumph here last year. On the back of his Amstel Gold win, he is the overwhelming favorite to make it back-to-back wins.

Other contenders:

Raul Gurpegi: Gurpegi is CSC's hope for this race. He is strong in the hills but we haven't seen him at any of the big races this year so there is a question as to how fit he will be.

Jonathan Castroviejo: AG2R has the strongest overall team here with three guys who could win. Castroviejo is one of those three. He is a highly capable puncheur and should be in the thick of it in the end.

Remi Pauriol: Another of the AG2R guys who will be gunning for a win.

Remy Di Gregorio: Third strong member of the AG2R team. Not clear which of these three AG2R will be pushing or whether they will all take a crack.

Rafael Andriato: Credit Agricole brings their strongest guy here looking for the win.

John Degenkolb: Replaces Rovira as the team leader for QuickStep coming into this one. Don't know what to expect from him.

Nice day for once. 11 man break today. They are caught by a Discovery Channel driven peloton 50km from the line. Almost immediately, Cataldo, Roba, Castroviejo and Degenkolb attack.
i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/classics/PCM0004-1.jpg

Rovny decides to wait and his teammates chase. It turns out to be a good move as the attackers are caught with 30km to go. At the 27 km mark, it is Duarte's turn to attack.
i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/classics/PCM0006-1.jpg

Rovny still waits but he can't wait much longer as all of his teammates are almost out of energy and won't be able to chase much longer. Lema goes next, followed by Ulbrich, Antuna, Pauriol and Martin.
i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/classics/PCM0007-1.jpg

Rovny decides he can't wait anymore and goes.
i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/classics/PCM0008.jpg

As the dust settles, Duarte is alone and in the lead.
i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/classics/PCM0009.jpg

23 seconds back of him are Martin, Ulbrich, Lema and Pauriol.
i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/classics/PCM0010.jpg

A further 25 second back are Antuna and Rovny. It appears Rovny waited to long to make his counter-attack and will pay the price.
i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/classics/PCM0011.jpg

Antuna runs out of energy and begins fading with the same happening to Lema, Pauriol and Duarte. As the final climb begins, Martin is now in the lead trailed by Duarte and Ulbrich with Rovny coming up fast on them.
i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/classics/PCM0012.jpg

With 1.7km to go, Rovny passes Duarte and Ulbrich and is 29 seconds in back of Martin.
i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/classics/PCM0013-1.jpg

Rovny is now almost running on fumes, but it seems Martin is already dead on the bike. With .5km to go, Rovny is close behind.
i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/classics/PCM0014.jpg

.4 km to go and they are dead even.
i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/classics/PCM0015-1.jpg

.3km to go and Rovny has no green bar left but he is in the lead now. Can he hold on?
i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/classics/PCM0016-1.jpg

He does. Great comeback win by Rovny. It took all of his strength and energy to do it. Martin is a surprise package, with no pre-race expectations, he finishes 2nd.
i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/classics/PCM0017-1.jpg

This was a draining race. Most of the riders crossing the finish line have absolutely no energy left.

Past Winners

2007: Joaquim Rodriguez (Caisse d'Epargne)
2008: Joaquim Rodriguez (Caisse d'Epargne)
2009: Kanstantin Siutsou (Discovery Channel)
2010: Inigo Landaluze (Relax GAM)
2011: Heinrich Haussler (Discovery Channel)
2012: Zhou Sui (Discovery Channel)

This is a race we wouldn't attend except that for some bizarre reason our sponsors get excited by it. It is a three star race in their books. So we show up each year and generally do well as the only other big teams that are ever here are Caisse d'Epargne and Euskatel. It's almost sure that the winner comes from one of these three teams other than the occasional strange result like in 2010.

Personally, I don't care much about this race so this will be a short update.

Stage 1: Lardero - Calahorra

Flat stage, JJ Rojas takes it in the sprint. Zhou Sui comes in 2nd.
i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/rioja/PCM0002.jpg

Stage 2: Casalarreina - Casalarreina

This is generally the deciding stage with two steep hills near the finish. Andalucia-Cajasur's Ugaitz Artola pulls a surprise by topping Amets Txurruka at the line to take over yellow. Meersman is in good form and finishes 3rd.
i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/rioja/PCM0004.jpg

Stage 3

One climb in the middle of the race then downhill to the finish. Zhou Sui takes it in the sprint with Rojas finishing second. Artola pulls off the suprise tour win.

What a win! Good call to wait as long as you did, even if it was so close.

Thanks. Thought I'd blown it when I couldn't reach the 2nd group so was a pleasent surprise to come back.

Quite good. They are posted somewhere here in this thread. Don't remember which page. He is one of a small handful of guys who has an average rating of 80 or higher.

Past Winners
2007: Alejandro Valverde (Caisse d'Epargne)
2008: Alejandro Valverde (Caisse d'Epargne)
2009: Juanjo Cobo (CSC)
2010: Alejandro Valverde (T-Mobile)
2011: Juanjo Cobo (Lampre)
2012: Ivan Rovny (Discovery Channel)

Rovny goes for the clean sweep of the hilly classics and is the clear favorite once again. Rovny knows his current value and has recently requested a 70,000 euro per month increase over his current salary and a role as absolute leader. Means he may be on another team next season and this may be Discovery Channel's last chance to take this race for a while.

The Main Contenders

Tony Martin: He was written off before La Fleche Wallonne as not sufficiently fit to compete in these classics. He responded with a 2nd place finish there and nearly won. It would, therefore, be unwise to discount him here.

Remi Pauriol: As at La Fleche Wallone, he should be in the thick of things here.

Yann Huguet: The T-Mobile puncheur did not attend the earlier two classics so don't know what to expect of him but he definitely has the capabilities to win.

Elias Morca: The young Mexican is less a puncheur and more a climber, but this race is one that can be won by a climber. He is the best climber here so he has a shot.

Maximo Lema: Lema showed at La Fleche Wallonne that he is a threat to win. He'll be trying to go one better here.
