You mean you don't know him? Even after last year
Puncheur with a good sprint. Is good in thougher races, hills and mountains. Although not top at long mountains.
And he is very quick, he nearly beat Balducci last year in a mass sprint in the Settimana Lombarda and...also finished 7th in the GC just 2 minutes behind Danilo di Luca.
Last year he also had a decent world championship where he finished in the first group after being one of the only riders who could escape out of the peloton in the final lap and make it to the front group where Duarte took the victory.
Good rouler, very good on hills, very fast in a sprint and decent in the mountains. He could become a very good rider for races like the Gold Race, Amstel, Liege, and hilly stages in small tours, especially in a sprint of small group.
He seems to have become even faster than last year though, because beating Fernandez and co. is a new one, even to me. |

It was hilly but he was not dropped on the climbs.
In fact, he was dropped in the final kilometres of the race when the speed went up. I think he never had to ride 60 km/h for longer than 1km in his life before
He said against the Algemeen Dagblad he had a strategy for the climbs, start in front and drop back during the climb, so that worked well, but he was already exhausted when the peloton started preparing the sprint
Give him a few months time and he will win stages like this. He just isn't used to riding on this kind of terrain at these speeds

Small correction: he didn't make it across. He came close, but only 2 riders made contact: one certain rider who bridged the gap on his own and another who sat on the certain rider's wheel not taking a single relay.

No Issoiso, he DID bridge the gap. Just at the very end, but he couldn't sprint anymore, as he just made contact. The video is still on Sporza, for further reference. I can even remember Wuyts saying "now Van Winden makes contact, and he's fast as well, but they are close to the finish line, he might not recover"
So, in this case, you are wrong. |

Watch: Laatste kilometer (Final kilomtre)
FIRST thing you see, an orange guy making it into the group and Wuyts saying: "Voila, Van Winden doet mee" (means, Van Winden is in the game/is in the front)
Ofcourse he immediately had to let go when they started the sprint, but he did bridge across... definately.

Ruben's right. He did brigde the gap on the long straight just before the corner to the track. |

Btw, Algarve today won by Koldo Fernandez
And before anybody says something about Bos finishing at 12 minutes. He had a flat tire at 20km to go. He was never in trouble according to Piet Kuys (Rabo DS) |

I just remember that the guy was in a blue jersey so I assumed it was Ponzi. Btw, didn't Ponzi join the front group at the same time as Rui Costa?
In other news, the top-10 for today's Volta ao Algarve stage 2:
1st Koldo Fernández (Eusklatel-Euskadi), 4h56m54s (37,487 km/h)
2nd Manuel Cadoso (Liberty Seguros), st
3rd Gerald Ciolek (Milram), st
The arrival was in a steep slop so it was more about power than speed. Koldo takes the overall lead.

he gave up today Yeah, the pace was really high on the first few climbs since no break got away. They kept attacking and attacking which wasn't in Bos favour
He'll get there in time, if he keeps making progress. |
