Stage 6 - Vuelta al Pais Vasco
The final stage of this years Vuelta al Pais Vasco. Sanchez has a comfortable lead and should be more than able to hold on to his jersey. It will also serve us as an indicator on both Sanchez and Astarloza, as to how much time we can expect to lose on the TT's in the grand tours.
First indicator is good as Astarloza clocks in 20 seconds faster than Menchov at the first timecheck. Good stuff!
Menchov clawed back a little towards the end but Astarloza still takes the lead by 7 seconds.
Contador sets out. Astarloza still holds the best time.
Dekker lost a few places in the last stage and isn't really a threat anymore.
Evans takes 2nd best time at the halfway check. Contador 3rd. Astarloza still leads!
Behind him Sanchez is setting out, and hes feeling good today.
And look at that. Sanchez races the first half in the exact same time as Astarloza.
Evans crosses the line to take 1st, he manages to beat Astarloza by 29 seconds at the line. Contador is now in 2nd, 18 seconds after Evans.
And here comes Sanchez! Rebellin looks slightly surprised as he is overtaken by the Euskaltel rider. Nice ride by Sanchez! 3rd, just 5 seconds after Contador, 23 to Evans. It's definitive, Samuel Sanchez has won the Vuelta al Pais Vasco!

Managers reaction
This was one of the biggest goals we had this year. Our sponsors love this race and it was a requirement from them that we won it. And i couldn't be happier!
Overall victory, and in this fashion, beyond any doubt. A stagewin for Aitor Galdos and the polkadot jersey for Landaluze. I don't think it could've gone any better!
Also, we saw our boys do well in the timetrail today, which was important to me.
I of course allready knew they could ride timetrials well, but to see it happen gives me great confidence ahead of the Giro next month. Keep your eye on Mikel i tell you!
Next up is the ardennes classics. Sanchez will be taking a hit on his fitness for the next few weeks to be able to peak for the tour. Mikel won't be participating as he needs to rest a little bit before riding the Romandie ahead of the Giro. |

Evans and Contador were probably "dark orange fitness" ( ), so expect to lose way more at the Tour.
good luck

Hehe, well, i'm guessing they were somewhere in the 80's probably. And i do expect to lose more in the tours, but as long as i'm consistent in the mountains, i should be able to manage my goals. |

Amstel Gold Race
We're into the classics. Originally not something we were gonna bother a whole lot with. But Sanchez display in Pais Vasco has encouraged us to have a go at it. Sanchez form is declining though and we haven't got our hopes too high.
4 man breakaway went from the start. Schwab(QSI has trouble staying on his bike though and crashes for the second time today.
60km out the breakaway still has a decent lead. The pack have upped the speed though.
4 riders, including Liquigas' Bertagnolli and Vaugrenard of FDJ have a go at it with 36km to go. The peleton is going fast now and the former breakaway has been caught a few km back. It becomes apparent that Sanchez is not having the best day today.
22,3km to go and all the favorites go! Sanchez picks the wheel of CSC superstar, Frank Schleck.
Somehow, despite not putting much effort into it Sanchez slides of the front of the other favorites. He remains calm though as he knows he hasn't seen the last of them yet. 19km left.
12km to go and we're all together. Sanchez is really hurting now under the lightning pace and repeated attacks. Rebellin has gone in front and looks very strong!
With 6.8km to go it's all over for Sanchez, the high pace and the constant attacks have drained him and he has to go at his own pace. Rebellin is looking like he wont be caught!
And he wont! Rebellin is jubilant as he crosses the line first in the Amstel Gold, 2008!
Behind him Nocentini takes 2nd ahead of Valverde. Sanchez manages 9th place as he gets passed by Kirchen in the last 100m. We were hoping for more, but Sanchez wasn't up for it today. 2 more chances in La Fleche and Liege!

La Fleche Wallone
Another ardennes classic. Sanchez will have another go at it today. He will need to feel really good to have any chance of competing against the classic riders.
This, ladies and gentlemen is a brave man. Loosli(LAM) has gone on his own and has a day of solo cycling in front of him.
It's all quiet the next 100km as the peleton grinds down the lead. Ivanov tried his luck but was cught shortly after by the CSC/Caisse machine.
Kirchen is the first of the favorites to move! 31km to go and he attacks!
Betagnolli, Cobo, Popovych are amongst the next wave to attack. Sanchez initially follows them but changes his mind as the the peleton is still powering ahead. I think Caisse and CSC have 12 riders between them working in it! 25.8 to go.
Wrong move by Sanches, at 1600m to go Cobo, Vaugrenard and Bertagnolli have a commanding lead! Sanchez tried to fetch them as we realized our error, but to no avail. Sanchez will have to sprint with the rest of the peleton today.
And it's Bertagnolli in a beauty of a win. Noone thought they'd make it home! Vaugrenard has been detached from the very front though. Valverde manages a last ditch effort for 2nd spot and Cobo takes 3rd. Sanchez had nothing left in him, and barely managed to stay within the top 20.
