Who’s it going to be?
It’s now over a month since the season ended but I have still not recieved any offer from any ProTour team yet and I’m starting to worry a bit. I mean, I thought I did very well this season with 9 victories and overall 17th in Continental Tour standings but it doesn’t seem like that’s good enough for the ProTour teams. There’s still time to go this off-season so I can only hope.
This was my thoughts about my future until the 22nd of November 2008. This date I will always remember because it changed my career drastically. I woke up that morning feeling the same way as I had done over the last couple weeks, I was worried. The day went on as all the other days of the off-season prior to this one, the phone didn’t make any noise, not because of ProTour teams calling that is. There were still over a month to go but when the phone rang that day I just picked up just believing it would be one of my cycling buddies wondering if I wanted to go for a spin, but it wasn’t. It was our team manager at GLS, Søren Svenningsen and the first thing he asked me will be imprinted in my mind for the rest of my life.
SS: So Jonas, are you still interested in a ProTour job?
JAJ: Well yeah sure I am, why are you asking?
SS: I have recieved a pretty good offer from a ProTour team for you.
At this point my heart skipped a beat. I said before the season that I maybe was going to take two or three years at GLS before making my move but lately I have changed my mind, and when Søren informed me of this interest from a ProTour team there was no doubt in my mind.
JAJ: Well who is it?
SS: You sure you even want to leave? It’s a big decision and maybe you need a few more years on a lower level?
JAJ: Just tell me already!
SS: Well it’s Team High Road.
So the team accepted this deal and a few weeks later this one popped in on the team mail.
I can’t believe I’m going to ride for Team High Road next season. It’s perhaps the most talented team around and I’m going to race alongside riders like Kim Kirchen, Mark Cavendish, Edvald Boasson Hagen and Paolo Bettini, who has also signed for the team. I’m really looking forward to meet my new teammates and to race on the ProTour. The first couple of season won’t give me a lot of big results I think but just being in a ProTour team is so huge for me.
My contract.
My new team.
Also another rider from GLS, Niki Østergaard will move to a new team as he just 2 days before the off-season ended signed a contract with the strong team Tinkoff, a move that will definitely provide him with the chance of competing in some big races and I hope I get to race him next season. That could be a lot of fun.

Wow... High Road had some turnover. No George Hincapie. No Michael Rogers. No Eisel. No Gerdeman.
I'm sure they're going to want to have some high places in Grand tours... but without a real GC mad with high mountain skills and at least decent TT skills it won't be easy.
Still... strong cobbles squad even with Hincapie leaving. And should be great in the Hilly 1-day races with Horner and Bettini coming in.
Should see some great results for THR in the races Jonas would enter... but it will be tough to achieve sponsor goals with that team I'd guess. |

Well not exactly. It seems after switching control team to High Road the team objectives didn't change, so High Road now has Team GLS' team objectives and sponsor confidence But surely I'll edit that somehow.

Stepping it up a notch
Gradually I’ve settled down and my pulse is almost back to normal after I was informed that I was going to be a High Road race in late November last year. Today is the first day of 2009 and the team schedule didn’t exactly allow me to celebrate new year’s eve. I met with my new teammates before new year’s eve and it’s a very nice bunch of guys I’ll be racing with this coming season. The ones I’m most enthusiastic about racing with is no doubt former World RR Champion, Paolo Bettini and Kim Kirchen. Both of them posses the racing package that I’m working to acquire. They are among the very best puncheurs in the business and I hope I’ll learn a lot from them this season.
Well the team-meeting on January 1 was about the team’s schedule and the schedules of the individual riders, which means I know now some of the races I’ll be in. I don’t know about Grand Tours yet as they are decided during the season, only thing we know about that is that Kim Kirchen will be our captain for the Tour de France but I don’t count on being in that race.
My first race will be Down Under Classic, but I will not take part in Tour Down Under eventhough that race starts two days later in the same country obviously. Then, in February, I’m going to race Trofeo Laigueglia and GP Lugano while the rest of team will be racing in Tour of California and Volta ao Algarve. In March I’m off for my seconds ProTour race of my career when I line up for Tirreno-Adriatico, where our team captain will be Thomas Løvkvist and all of our Italians also will be present. In April I will race the Basque Tour before I finally get to race in some of my favourite races, the Ardennes Classics.
This is not the best part however. Remember how I told that the World Championships will be raced in Copenhagen this season? Bob Stapleton is apparently very happy to have me at his team because he has allowed me to focus one-hundred percent on the Worlds after I have finished in the Ardennes. This means that I might get to race in Vuelta a Espana as a warm-up race, but it could end up being Tour of Poland instead.
No matter what, this is what I have dreamed of and I’m psyched to show that I can fight with the big boys of professional cycling.
