Stage 6 | Benalmádena - La Zubia, 158 km
i.imgur.com/yiL3qot.jpg

The one issue with holding the leaders jersey in a grand tour is that there is always a camera on you, to record every single second of your suffering (or dominance). Today it would mostly be a lot of the first. At just under a 160km todays stage was a short one, but the final climb up Cumbres Verdes which was 5km at about 10% wasn’t terrain on which I would show Henao or anyone else for that matter who’s boss.

Team Europcar made sure to become half of the peloton their enemy as in a failed attempt to catch the breakaway they set up a high speed chase that lasted for well over 70km. With the peloton completely losing pace as the French team gave up the breakaway managed to get to Cumbres Verdes with a 9 minute lead.

As Joaquin Rodriguez opened up the debates right at the foot of the final climb the hardest 5km of my life would start as the pace skyrocketed. MINUTES of the lead from the early breakaway where being taken back within kilometers. As Contador and Betancur where dragging at the head of the peloton which had been reduced to a mere 30 men instantly, with me hanging on at the back.

With 3km left it was the #2 of the Tour, Contador who in an attack which was more impressive than the one at Verbier flew away from the group, out of which I was dropped instantly as the pace increased even more. Froome, Rodriguez, Mollema, Valverde and Betancur were the only ones able to follow at a distance. Contador 1, Froome 0.

Julian Arredondo also was having a tough time as he followed on a distance. Not as far back as I though, as in the falling snow the cameraman captured my agony dramatically.

Teklehaimanot who seemed to be secure of the win as the best rider in the breakaway must have gotten a cold as Contador flew by him in the final 1km. It seemed the break had blown itself up when staying ahead of Europcar and were now paying the price as Contador took the flowers and the leaders jersey.

A leaders jersey I had officially lost as I crossed the line as 19th, a good 3 minutes after the winner.

Was the first time I saw snow in PCM. I quite liked it! Grin

@dark_x2012

Never count Froome out. Wink And I'd be quite surprised if Arcier ever manages to win a GT!

Stage 7 | Alhendín - Alcaudete, 165 km
i.imgur.com/Nps7gtY.jpg

Before the Vuelta I had noted down todays stage as the ideal one to go for a stage victory, but with Julian in good standing in the GC, Josu decided it best for me to serve him. Useful help as with the thermostat hitting 35 degrees plenty of water had to be carried back and forth.

On the final climb of the day the Alto Ahillo the breakaway got caught which opened up the theater for Betancur, Contador, Valverde and Henao as the quartet attacked halfway through the climb, quickly taking a 20 second lead.

i.imgur.com/NBrWryt.jpg

Julian had me counter the quartet by placing myself at the head of the peloton, quickly reducing our group to just Arredondo, Rodriguez, D.Martin, Froome, Gilbert and Vanendert. By the time we reached the top the situation had become.

<Group Contador> 32” <Group Arredondo> 23” <Peloton>

None of our companions were willing to put in any chase work and rather speculated on their teammates returning from the background. Leaving me with little else to do, but take the lead and dive into the descent.

i.imgur.com/2USMPZb.jpg

It didn’t take a lot of risks for us to return to Contador and his companions as by the time we reached the bottom of the descent we had regrouped and held an 1 minute lead on the peloton. Mollema, van Garderen and Ulissi the only ones who had managed to jump across. It where those same three together with me that set the pace in the group as we reached the final hill into Alcaudete with a lead of over well 2 minutes on the peloton with me in particular having emptied out my engine as I had to let the group go.

In a finale that was made for him it was Valverde who out-sprinted Henao, Rodriguez and Contador for the win. As the four managed to jump off from the rest of the group and take a good 30 seconds on the rest of the group.

Stage 8 | Baeza - Albacete, 207 km
i.imgur.com/9K23e2B.jpg

The team cook Kim Thorsen made sure to give us a strong pasta meal this morning as the Dane knew what was to come today. The stages to Albacete are famous for the strong wind that blows around the course, today was no different.

Our directeur sportif Josu Cortés made sure that Julian and I were kept at the head of the peloton by Devolder, Vandewalle, Roulston and Rast at all times. A plan which paid off with about 70 km left in the stage as the men of Belkin and Giant went into mach one ripping the peloton into echelons. What would follow was 70 km of pure pain as the pace did not drop for even a single moment. The kind of tough race Alexander Kristoff from Katusha excels in and it came as no surprise that he won the mass sprint finish.

i.imgur.com/OlzbF71.jpg

Another man from Katusha was less lucky today though. Joaquin Rodriguez did not make the cut when the peloton broke apart and would lose over 10 minutes today. Leaving his dream of winning a grand tour in ruins.

At the dinner table that night we made sure to pull out a special bottle of champagne for Kim Thorsen. To congratulate him for his impressive (not that impressive) course prediction ability.

Stage 9 - Carboneras de Guadazaón - Aramón Valdelinares, 181 km
i.imgur.com/99EsJtL.jpg

In the routebook next to stage 9 it has a hilly icon. An icon which the Vuelta organization could switch in for a mountainous one and nobody would complain. The final climb up to Valdelinares averaged out at just over 7% with sections of 10-12%.

On the Puerto San Rafael which was the appetizer before the climb to Valvelinares it was Alejandro Valverde who laid the peloton on the stove by jumping ahead. ‘El Imbatido’ quickly followed by jersey roja wearer Contador.

i.imgur.com/wnQgcS7.jpg

Unlike previous days all favourites where able to follow and unlike previous days I didn’t have to completely blow myself up to follow as well. My wonder legs carried me across to the final climb in an elite group of 20-men.

A group which wasn’t mean for long as Rodriguez attacked quickly on the final climb towards Valdelinares. Countered on a distance by Contador, D.Martin, Valverde and Froome. It was last mentioned who pushed out another acceleration as he jumped towards Rodriguez leaving the other 3 on their own. Giving Arredondo, I and the rest of the group the opportunity catch up.

Meanwhile at the front of the race Froome showed he still had his strong form from the Tour de France as he left Rodriguez behind, soloing his way to the victory.

i.imgur.com/SoYIWqf.jpg

Contador with an ultimate effort managed to save his red jersey, but blew our entire group up during the process, forcing every man to ride for himself.

I had to let Arredondo and some others go, but managed to bite myself in the back of Talansky his wheel before breaking down in the final 500m. Finishing the day as 11th a little over 2 minutes behind Froome. In a performance I had never expected and one which firmly placed me in the top 15 of the general classification.

Stage 10 | Real Monasterio de Santa María de Veruela - Borja, 34.5 km
i.imgur.com/D5z9Er1.jpg

My wonder legs of yesterday where no more, but my confidence and morale where still high for todays stage. A 35 km long individual time trail. Normally would sound like a very displeasing day, but today was different. As the course was mostly in a declining line. If there ever was a time trial made for me, this was it. Time to push everything out one last time before the rest day. A welcome relief after 10 days of torture in the Spanish sun.

As I rolled up to the starting platform the leading time was that of Boasson Hagen at 46’29” a small surprise as he was 2 seconds faster than the top favorite of the day, Taylor Phinney. Who with his tall and big body seemed the ideal candidate for this stage.

i.imgur.com/FMNLsdn.jpg

Right out from the start my legs were feeling good as I danced my way up the Alto del Moncayo the 8km long climb we had to conquer before descending towards the finish in Borja. At the top I right away clocked the fastest time of the day up till then beating Boasson Hagen his time by 12 seconds.

A lead I knew would be difficult to maintain if I didn't gain some more time in the descent towards Ambel after which the road would start to even out. Josu repeatedly spoke through my ear-piece to keep the risks to a minimum in the descent. Words that fell on deaf ears as I cut the corners as close to the crowd as I cut. Accelerating on my highest gear whenever coming out of one.

Efforts which where paid back as by the time I reached the checkpoint in Ambel I was leading Hagen by 20 seconds! Leaving me exactly 10km to defend my lead till the finish-line. Euphoria took over as I came to realize I was competing with the best in the world at a time trial!

The burning sensation in my legs almost became unbearable in the final K’s as I tried to turn them as fast I could while holding my upper body as steady as possible on top the Pinarello TT bicycle.

As I passed the flamme rouge Josu his screaming in my ear turned into white noise. It was going to be close as I pushed out one final sprint in the last 300m, practically throwing my bike across the finish-line. My face immediately looking back to check the time. 45’23”! Six seconds! I had beaten Boasson Hagen and Phinney in a time trial! Unreal! In a performance that was maybe more impressive than my stage win last week.

Before I could even replace Boasson Hagen on the waiting chair my time was smashed by Tejay van Garden by a full 21 seconds. As a famous Jedi Master once said; ‘there is always a bigger fish.’ Even though I lost my top 10 classification, Josu his hysterical embrace was an acceptable alternative though.

At the end of the day, three others dived under my time, Froome the day winner at 45’43”, Valverde who finished 10 seconds after van Garderen and Mollema who beat me out by 1 second.

That’s correct, your dear narrator beat out Contador by 3 seconds. Maybe there is a GC rider hiding in me somewhere, aye?
