Yeah the race was average but wheelsucking? That is absoute rubbish, he let his team mates do the work and he played to his strengths. I get really tired about this wheelsucking bullshit that gets thrown around by people watching races. ITS CALLED TACTICS!!!

You're Aussie, so obviously you are never going to agree, but Gerrans won because he never did a thing. Even when Martin attacked, Gerrans didn't respond, just waited in Valverde's wheel.

That is literally the definition of wheelsucking.

It's good tactics, but not entertaining racing.

I am not a patriotic person whatsoever, other forum members know I love cycling and am not fazed what country a cyclist is from. Don't throw the "you're and aussie" line at me. What did Kwiatek do? Martin only did something on the final hill, it is what a team leader is meant to do, so Gerrans should of attacked and go against what he had in his favour which is his sprint at the end of a tough race and lose it? Weening was on the front at the end pulling to set Gerrans up, GreenEdge played it perfectly and good on them.
Guess by that logic every sprinter out there is just a wheelsucker aswell because they let there team set it up for them

Yes, every sprinter is a wheelsucker. That's what the word means. But I don't spend 2 hours watching them waiting for Cavendish to throw in an attack.

Every one of the leaders were shit today. But Gerrans did even less than any of the others, and that directly lead to him winning.

Hence my line:
Gerrans did the best wheelsucking to win

Spoiler
As for the Aussie thing, your an Australian who got angry because I was negative about Gerrans, apologies if your motivations were not for nationalistic reasons.

Not angry buddy just don't get the wheelsucking thing, I just like everyone here are pretty much underwhelmed by not only Liege but the whole week of racing...
The only thig I will take out of this is that at least Gerrans is a supporter of the Hells 500 crew Wink

But you spent two hours waiting for Gerrans to launch an attack, when he was arguably the fastest guy amongst those who might expect to be in a group that's make it to the finish ?
Frankly, how retarded should Gerrans be to launch an attack 1) as long as he had at least one teammate to reel others' attacks in 2) it was obviously going to end in a group sprint

So, unless you attack like a friggin' useless fireworks that's misfiring you're being shit ?
Strange conception, but each to his own.

That's twice now I've tried to rant at the wheelsucking argument, but both times it hasn't worked, so I'll put it in simple terms-I couldn't agree more with Kirchen and Eden.
Disclaimer- Most of my posts are me thinking aloud. And most of what I think is rubbish.

Where did I say Gerrans was being shit?

It was a shit race, won by the guy who didn't even follow moves on the final two climbs, and instead just waited for it all to come back together, which it did.

All you guys bashing Gerrans are still living in 19th century Romanticism. Wink

Nordhaug has had a some good races, but I feel like everytime he is in the final group near the end he starts going on strong, but futile attacks time and time again. He gets a few meters every time, but when the actual attaks come he has squanderd all his energy.

Calm you tits, Lars!

Well that was unfortunate for Martin. Instantly thought of Menchov from the 08' Tour.

Not sure Martin would have won anyway, but still could have grabbed a pretty good result. Valverde and Gerrans, probably the 2 fastest men you could find left for a finish like today, so not totally surprising to see them 1-2. The others should have done a better job of trying to get rid of them before, knowing how good both are at sprinting.

ruben
That was absolutely doodoo.
The fact that Gerrans won after barely seeing him all race says enough.

Glad with Arredondo, Pozzovivo and Caruso. For a bit of animation.
Glad with Slagters result and his attempt of an attack on Saint Nicolas. But that's about it.

Worst classic of the year

Noting, of course, that it was Weening who did so much to bring it back. OGE were playing the race to win the way that their man can win - Gerrans is never going to win if the course is a tough 30km straight of attacking, so OGE had to ensure it was a bunch that arrived at the end.

Anyway on another topic, I'm really enjoying seeing Pozzovivo at AG2R this season and last - being in all of the WT races throughout the season has really helped his confidence in races outside of the Giro Pfft

How Martin managed to crash..
Cycling has changed..it is more boring. Raiders like Valverde, gerrans has iron nerves..holding himself back long as possible and took the best places as they are fastest guys at uphill sprint. Boring yeaah..but it is reality now. Thank good cobble races are still fun as usual. Spring is not completely fast of time. Caruso was stunning and he was so close today.

Luis Leon Sanchez
If Caruso and Pozzovivo were 1-2 by more than 5 seconds then they would show up the 'favourites' but because they didnt make it and there was a lack of other attacks Gerrans won. It was a smart race from him, doing the right thing, his team mates also made a huge contribution towards his victory.

Did Valverde have any bad luck this Ardennes? Nope

Gilbert? nope.

Kwiatek? Nope.

Of course it was Dan. Of course. (And I guess Purito as well.

Piti and Kwiatek have been the most consistent riders this spring, so it's almost like an award for it. While Martin... well Martin before Fleche had done nothing.

Moreno was also consistent as hell...3 9th places.

Why attack if he got a good sprint?

He actually rode a really good race - didn't jump at any stupid attacks off the front like all the other favourites did and sat back and conserved his energy. He positioned himself well and always has a teammate with him. Didn't really put a foot wrong.

Too bad i have to watch state of cycling where attacks are being called stupid and only ways to ride smart is just sit there and wait for the sprint after 260kms. Oh gosh, that was incredibly boring week with ardennes classics, one of the worst editions i have ever seen (and i have seen only last moments of FW at least, bigger parts for AGR and LBL). Shame that Roman Kreuziger is rather an attacking type, that stops him winning more because everybody is just bringing it back for a sprint, instead of cooperation in attacks.

I hope some crazy italians at Giro will make the riding going the attacking way for a change...

I couldn't see the race live because I had a cycling race in Düren, but I watched the last 20km's on Youtube and I can't call it bad. I enjoyed it and was happy that Gerrans won LBL, Too bad about Martin tho HE would have absolutely won.

What what? When you use CAPS LOCK and ton of excalmation marks, you seem mad because of it...

And Mb just descibed with which tactics Gerrans won, by wheelsucking. We all know it is the most boring way of racing.

It's the same way Sagan always wins, and nobody seems to care about that?
