For me there are limits to how far you can go to catch dopers. And when there is a serious risk of contaminated meat, I think imposing a limit for clenbuterol is more sensible than forcing all athletes to become vegetarians whenever they visit Asia (although even in EU there is always a risk).
Some things:
1) The EU has an incredibly low rate of clenbuterol usage in cattle and there is regular testing to ensure this. This is why Contador's defence was terrible - there just weren't cows with it in that area.
2) (I believe) it is primarily used in cattle. So other forms of meat are still able to be eaten.
3) It is only some parts of Asia where this is a problem, mostly China. Japan is still fine. So teams and riders that desperately want beef can pay for imported meat.
4) WADA in November put out a press release reminding athletes of these dangers.

Well, WADA is not going to change anything about it anyway. As for Rogers, let's see what he will say in his defence (and keep calm until then). |

But the Contador case already set a precedent that this is not a valiable excuse, so it probably makes no difference.
By the way, does anyone else find it odd that with each of those positives, it's about single riders and not several riders of the same team?
Changed my sig, this was getting absurd.

So... since clenbuterol is falling out of the trees in China, will we suddenly see a huge increase in the use of traning camps in China?

It mostly depends on how many of them were tested, especially for clenbuterol.
If many riders stayed at the same place, ate the same thing and come up with clenbuterol positives you can believe it's food contamination, but if it's just one of them...
it's harder to believe and he's going to have some hard times proving it was accidental. |

I expect suspension for too many donuts eaten, or whatever you british eat ( hopefully not that awful meat pies).

That's because Contador's excuse was found rather unlikely and CAS judged that he most likely took a contaminated food supplement. However, this was not Contador's defense and there is strict liability, so he got suspended.
Only Rogers testing positive at the Japan Cup might make sense, as he's the winner and he's been tested for sure. Don't know how many others got tested, from which teams they are, what they have been eating... |

Here's what Rogers has to say:
Statement from Michael Rogers.
"On the 18th of December 2013 at approximately 16:30 CET, I was informed by the UCI, the world governing body of cycling, of an Adverse Analytical Finding for Clenbuterol taken from my A sample at Japan Cup on the 20th of October 2013.
I would like to make it very clear, in the strongest terms possible that I have never knowingly or deliberately ingested Clenbuterol.
I can advise that during the period 8th - 17th of October, before arriving in Japan, I was present in China for the World Tour race, Tour of Beijing. I understand that it has been acknowledged by the World Anti Doping Agency (WADA) as well as other anti-doping bodies, that food contaminated with Clenbuterol is a serious problem in China.
In the following weeks I will have the opportunity to explain this unfortunate situation to the UCI, in which I will give my full attention and cooperation to resolve this issue in the quickest time frame possible.
I would personally like to thank those around the world, who have shown compassion and understanding of this situation that I’ve been placed in.
Thank you.

See, that sort of Pie is nice, but a cold pork pie with jelly, I find that completely unfathomable.
On topic, I seriously doubt that Rogers deliberately used clen, but I am perfectly happy for him to get done, given that I have almost no doubt that he doped in the past.

I second that (the last part). Not sure if he'll manage to avoid a suspension though. |
