Uninjured too, thankfully. Could also end Levarlet's career too. RIP to Arnaud.

Normally he'll walk off free once he's done with his custody period, as it wasn't an intended murder, but will be tried rather soon, and most likely he'll serve a couple of years (2 to 5, I'd say) in jail, for non-intended murder and driving offense.
Unsure about what Minard will get, if anything at all. |

According to Le Parisien he was out drinking with former colleagues Guillaume Levarlet and Sébastien Minard. Levarlet was driving the vehicle and lost control of the vehicle possibly because he had too much alcohol. Very, very sad story and very stupid.
That's a very sad news. Condolence to Coyot's family, friends and love ones.

To be honest, I thought tempo was used quite a lot, for every important climb (mountain or longer climb) that's not decisive. I'm quite surprised by the figures I've read.
There are a couple of pros riding around, who're also on Strava. Most of their solo rides, long or short, are done at ~30 km/h (average), which is more or less what I do too (on 4ish hours rides), even if I never do 5 or 6 hours. I've no idea if you're strong or not compared to me, but most cyclists could probably hang on for a moment while the pros are resting.
Almost all of us would be slaughtered when they do intervals though.
Not that I'm racing so it's really totally irrelevant for me but it occurs that Strava probably inadvertently encourages this type of training with minimal tempo riding. As in take it easy then all out for a segment, rinse and repeat. Good excuse for me to use when I'm blatantly KOM hunting... |

Even when I go KOM hunting (yes, I do that too, mind you ), I try to not let my heart beat go below 140, which makes me ride at ~30 km/h on random routes. Of course 140 is far from tempo in my case (that'd be from 157 to 170).
Still, I always considered cycling as a sport where you needed to be good at every intensity to have a chance of success, I'm extremely surprised by the content of that article which said tempo was almost never used by cyclists. |

8 teams applied for 3 spots. Bardiani is almost guaranteed a place. I think after last year success and all the recent talk MTN is also close to securing the spot.
Will be interesting for the 3rd spot though.

Aren't there 4 spots available? I thought there are 18 WT-teams and 22 teams in total for a GT. I might have missed something though.

I agree with you about Bardiani, after Pirazzi's KOM jersey last year. I think IAM will be choose and maybe MTN (Cf Ciolek win at MSR) or Team Net-App (Konig should be interesting but his participation will depend of the tdf's choices for the wild-card) |

1 spot is rewarded to the team winning the Italian race series.
I'd say Colombia should have a good chance as well after some good results in the last Giro

Androni has an automatic place as Atlantius mentioned.
Well, I would have thought both IAM and NetApp would concentrate on Tour. Both Konig, Chava, Frank said they are already preparing with Tour in mind. So they could at best send their B teams there, which would be a shame.
Colombia will likely get the spot. They also have a recent stage winner on the team ( Rubiano ).

I see. Forgot about that one, should have known.
Think Bardiani, MTN and Colombia will get the wildcards. Novo Nordisk would be great, but they should aim on the Vuelta, think they stand more of a chance there.

It WILL be Bardini, MTN and Colombia.
Bardini - Italian team would do them anyway, plus a very good showing in 2013
MTN - A team interested in Italian races and with success. Plus fits well into the Giros idea of globalizing
Colombia - A team interested in Italian races and with success. Plus fits well into the the Giros idea of globalizing
IAM and Netapp will be passed over because of stated focus on TDF. Caja because of the lack of global appeal compared to some other applicants. UHC because they lack serious globalizing appeal and quality. Novo for the same reasons as UHC.

I would be really happy if Team Novo Nordisk was to get a spot |
