Blog #21 | 14th of April 2013 | 23:12
Our squad has a strong hilly base, so finding the right riders to race was not easy. Greg Van Avermaet, the saver of our team, was the obvious first choice, together with Maxime Monfort and Lars Nordhaug.
After receiving mails about people willing to kill me if I don't include Steenacker in the line-up for the Amstel Gold Race, I decided not to take the risk. He was in.
The squad was filled with Wellens, Battaglin, Dumoulin and Rabottini.
As tradition dictates, we got a guy in the break. No one less than Lars Petter Nordhaug. Seems like he had a plan. Didn't tell me about it, the dirt bag!
The race was over when World Champion Gilbert attacked with Peter Sagan. Greg tried to follow but ended up chasing a small group alone.
Three men sprinted for the win, with the smartest one winning: Betancur!
Greg finished 6th and continues to be the biggest man of the season for us, ensuring us a WT spot for next year single-handedly.
Rik Steenacker lacked strength to go into the attack, but managed the bunch sprint like an expert, finishing 13th. Well done!

First of all, my son, Tom Butler, is not completely useless, for two reasons.
1. He keeps my wife happy, which means I don't have to do that.
2. Giro del Trentino. In stage 1, he managed a good place. With some mountain stages coming up, I think he might finally show some of that talent he supposedly has!
Other than that, we have, who else, Rik Steenacker. The unfortunate thing is that he's awfully shy. On the bike, he's a beast, but off the bike he's not very impressive. So I start a new project.
PROJECT STEENACKER
He obviously has a big future ahead of him. Every interview up until now consisted out of a reporter asking questions and Rik saying: "I don't know", "the team was strong" and "why are you in my room?". That's about to change. I'm going to start taking care of him and teach him how to cope with the media, since things like that can bring stress you don't need. I hope the fan club can help me out here a bit.
He can take a break first now, though. The Mur of Huy is too tough for him, he's only 20 for Pete's sake.
I'll see you there, though!

Well 3 in top 15 isn't bad...
"He keeps my wife happy"
baseballlover312, 06-03-14 : "Nuke Moscow...Don't worry Russia, we've got plenty of love to go around your cities"
Sarah Palin, 08-03-14 (CPAC, on Russian aggression) : "The only thing that stops a bad guy with a nuke is a good guy with a nuke"
Big thanks to jdog for making this AMAZING userbar!

Another Belgian WT race. We want at least a top 10!
The race was a traditional race to the foot of the Mur van Huy. So nothing important happened really.
1 kilometer before the foot, this was the situation:
The attackers including Gilbert
The chasers, Europcar leading
Only one fighter hung on for the win, and it's the World Champion! Super young Vergnaud finishes 2nd! Greg takes a brilliant fifth, Maxime Monfort an 11th place.
Tom Butler finally put in a good effort and finished 9th in the Giro Del Trentino, also conquering the young jersey!
Forgive me the shortness in this report. I'm in the middle of important business right now. Expect a new update real soon! Can't say anything about it now!

It's terrible. Real terrible.
After spending hours and hours in a small, dingy, stinking room, I'm a broken man. Well... No, yeah, a broken man. We, the Citigroup Team core, had a long talk but there's no way out.
The financial crisis has hit another victim. And, unfortunately for us, Citigroup Belgium is bankrupt. This means it's the end of the team, for sure. That's all we know now. We have no idea how this will effect the team in the short term. Obviously, the team will have to disband or get a new sponsor, but we have no idea whether we can finish the cycling season. Wages might not be paid, so we might not be able to keep the riders.
We just don't know at this stage. I'm running around looking for solutions constantly right now. I'll try to keep you updated.
Hope to bring you good news soon,
- Butler - |

Full results?
5th is a good result for Greg
edit: Oh, that is some bad news now
I am sure you will find a sponsor after winning Flanders though

Shit, that's a shame.
It is just a story twist isn't it? If so, great twist.
