Why did Kashechkin and Bagot abandon today?

Apparently Cofidis got a machine that is used in hospitals for severe breathing problems. Taaramäe said that after using it for 30min before todays stage, his breathing was almost normal but the effect only lasted 2h into the stage.
He said riding is almost ok, as long as his hearthbeat is under 150 but riding harder than that feels like lungs are collapsing.

Ahh the sight of Sagan failing is actually quinte enjoyable.
Blind fanboyism from his fans makes me hate the guy.
Nice win from Gerrans, Kwiatek is now a sprinter? The kid does everything it seems? |

Couldn't see the stage due to working evening shift. Doesn't look like I missed much though, is that correct?
Honestly not that surprised Sagan was beaten. I believe I said already in the predictions thread that it looks like he has lost a bit of speed in favour of improved climbing.

He showed that he has a decent sprint way before turning into an excellent climber. Before this year he was known as a good timetriallist with a handy kick.

made me lol watching the commentary (of Liggett and Sherwin mind) that they thought Sagan had romped home with it, when it looked obvious live that the Orica rider had taken it
didn't realise it was quite half a wheel though
and is Europcar's goal the KOM win? - or do they have GC aspirations? |

They mentioned that Pierre Roland DID NOT intend to defend the KoM, but he did anyway, so I wonder why they did that...

Was just thinking about Tony Martin's luck and remembered that last year (or was it the year before?) where he was injured pretty early on, he would sit at the back of the peleton each day. Another rider was also injured after an early crash and would too sit at the back each day and they'd always be pictured together riding despite not really knowing each other and riding for different teams. So, my question is, can anybody remember who the other rider was? It's been on my mind all day and can't remember who it was. I have a vague feeling he may have been Dutch, or Sylvain Chavanel (which I highly doubt).

Both, actually. They hanged out in the gruppetto together every day at the start of the Tour.

Blind hate of a rider because of his fans is much better than blind fanboyism, seems legit.
Screw the fans (including me), just watch the guy and you will probably like him.
But of course it is typical to find anything bad on every dominant factor in any sport. Either arrogance, bad behavior or stupid fans...

Just watch his reaction to his defeat and you'll love him
"Yeah, I wanted to surprise my fans, they're used to see me winning so I tried something different here" Put that together with his "naughty" look and you have one hell of an interview |

He cracks me up every time! Too bad he lost that sprint, but I was afraid of that before. I think he shouldn't have lost that weight... Ever since Suisse it's obvious he's missing too much of his punch. Sure he survives stronger hills, but there are riders who have more energy after such demanding stages simply because they are climbers/punchers.
I thought Sagan went up a hill pretty well already and he had a punch strong enough to beat almost everyone. Now he climbs a bit better, but if you take him to the line, it's no certainty anymore, which it used to be... My opinion. |

We will see what he actually does in proper flat sprint. Cav and Greipel should beat him easily especially with their trains, but if he will snatch several top5s it will be oky. Because i think we can see his main show in the mountain stages this year, trying to win as many mid stage sprints and breaks as possible. But he will have a hard time to escape for sure.
So i would wait with rating of his possiblew slight refocus. Maybe he is just shaken a bit from the crash (unlikely in his case) or not in top form. Or he really is trying something else and new, we will see if he will suceed with that.
And i dont really get how he can be hated, compare his interviews and acting with likes of Cav and it is easy to pick your favourite, at least for me. (and not because he is Slovak though..).

I like him and I'm Belgium, so there's proof
I just fear if he continues this refocus (early to tell, but still), he won't perform so well in the cobbled classics. I just think he climbed well enough already. Gilbert couldn't shake him, enough said, he doesn't need to climb Alpe d'Huez, he's no climber
But he may surprise me and win the Tour, sure |

I prefer Sagan as a rider, but Cav as a personality. No fanboyism here |

So i just read his web and he actually says that he still feels pain from his nasty crash in first stage. He has heavily bruised back and according to his words it limits him in the sprint. Also Peter said he tried to escape in 2nd stage after the Bakelands group, but everybody is watching him closely this year.
So this can be pure PR nonsense, or he is really limited by crash, we will see later.

Indeed. I just get worried about him burning out so soon that I interpret any sign of weakness as burning out already
But he'll probabaly win a Tour stage here, 2 times close already! |
