2018 is here and now. Compared to last season expectations are through the roof. We have one main goal ....... Promotion to the World Tour. Me and.....

..... will do everything in our ability to ensure we meet this goal whilst maintaining the integrity of the team and Qatari cycling.

Although the squads will be mixed and matched throughout the season fundamentally the five coaches will each look after a group of riders. The three coaches from last year are joined by Oscar Freire and Arni Van Heylen, a coach who as became prominent in Belgium in the last few years.

Freire's Riders:

Javier Aramendia

Spoiler

[
i1346.photobucket.com/albums/p690/TheRider11/PCM0022_zps8f37a4b8.jpg
A great rider for this level, having taken a diverse range of wins which helped Bretagne gain promotion to the world tour in 2017, a great workhorse to boot.

Klaus Lodewyck

Spoiler

https://i1346.photobucket.com/albums/p690/TheRider11/PCM0022_zps8f37a4b8.jpg[/img]
A fast man in his own right, he will get opportunities to shine but mostly will be the last leadout man.

Stijn Neirynck

Spoiler

i1346.photobucket.com/albums/p690/TheRider11/PCM0009_zpsd13bfe18.jpg

A really strong rider for the flat and will be our leader on the Belgian cobbled races we hope to be invited to, famous for winning the Omloop in 2016 for Accent Jobs.

Juan Jose Rojas

Spoiler

i1346.photobucket.com/albums/p690/TheRider11/PCM0010_zpsba31d66d.jpg

Without a doubt the squad leader is Rojas. He comes to us after a dreadful season where his best result was third on a stage of the tour of Beijing, but he has never raced lower than the world tour level and we are hoping Freire can get him back to his best.

Samet Yildiz

Spoiler

i1346.photobucket.com/albums/p690/TheRider11/PCM0015_zpsec0b1c7c.jpg
The huge figure of Yildiz only impressed on a few occasions last season but he is expected of big things, can he deliver though?

Gardeyn's Riders:

Allan Davis

Spoiler

i1346.photobucket.com/albums/p690/TheRider11/PCM0025_zps6a11f7c7.jpg

The veteran Aussie will be hoping for some good showings and we hope he can really be a great team asset.

Gustav Erik Larsson

Spoiler

i1346.photobucket.com/albums/p690/TheRider11/PCM0005_zpsfd007f4f.jpg

The Swede's experience on the flat, TT bike and cobbles will benefit the squad hugely.

Chan Siu Long

Spoiler

i1346.photobucket.com/albums/p690/TheRider11/PCM0007_zpsddf2429e.jpg

A real powerhouse on the flat.He showed flashes of brilliance last season if he can perform to his max for even 50% of the season then we are on for a good one.

Andrei Nechita

Spoiler

i1346.photobucket.com/albums/p690/TheRider11/PCM0008_zpsf502ff78.jpg

The former Romanian champion looks to be a great character and good on all terrains, very versatile.

Imtiyaz Sulimani

Spoiler

i1346.photobucket.com/albums/p690/TheRider11/PCM0013_zpsf0543ef6.jpg

A good rider for the flat and growing in stature after one year with Qatar Optics.

Van Heyden's Riders:

Ziad Al Jahani

Spoiler

i1346.photobucket.com/albums/p690/TheRider11/PCM0018_zps9d4511be.jpg

One of the scouts was very impressed with this young Qatari, I'm not seeing it myself, but you never know who is to develop.

Ali Sanad Al Muwalid

Spoiler

i1346.photobucket.com/albums/p690/TheRider11/PCM0020_zps5267d78a.jpg

A rider who we signed after great performances at our Doha based cycling centre.

Bohdan Shevchenko

Spoiler

i1346.photobucket.com/albums/p690/TheRider11/PCM0011_zps05991491.jpg

Signed after an impressive amateur career, a good rider for the flat.

Serhiy Zadinskyi

Spoiler

i1346.photobucket.com/albums/p690/TheRider11/PCM0016_zpse5167010.jpg

Similar to Bohdan although Serhiy prefers it more so when the road goes uphill.

Andreu's Riders:

Jan Bakelants

Spoiler

i1346.photobucket.com/albums/p690/TheRider11/PCM0023_zps5bea0ecb.jpg

Jan is a really aggressive rider and a quality puncheur, more than capable of winning races at this level and has already finished in top 10 of the continental rankings.

Ahmed Al Ghanim

Spoiler

i1346.photobucket.com/albums/p690/TheRider11/PCM0017_zps3bdaabe5.jpg

This small build of a climber didn't have many opportunities last year but this season will be different.

Abdulatif Al Zaid

Spoiler

i1346.photobucket.com/albums/p690/TheRider11/PCM0021_zps7fc1c3dd.jpg

Apart from getting lost in Langkawi Abdulatif rode pretty well last season, although he was the first to be dropped on a number of climbs.

Stefan Stamm

Spoiler

i1346.photobucket.com/albums/p690/TheRider11/PCM0012_zpse9f89a76.jpg

The former SES Astra rider is a real light weighted rider but that gives him a big advantage for the mountains, it will be interesting to see how he performs this season.

Ion Izagirre

Spoiler

i1346.photobucket.com/albums/p690/TheRider11/PCM0004_zps54eee456.jpg

Having already finished twice in the top5 riders in the continental rankings, Ion is a great rider for this level. Very capable of winning one week long stage races with impressive all round abilities.

De Waele's Riders:

Mahdi Al Mowaled

Spoiler

i1346.photobucket.com/albums/p690/TheRider11/PCM0019_zps96439ef2.jpg

The strong willed character should have increased his abilities after last season so he can have a real effect on the team's performances.

Simon Clarke

Spoiler

i1346.photobucket.com/albums/p690/TheRider11/PCM0024_zps76987fde.jpg

After 5 seasons with Dukla this great all-round rider joins us, a must have utility rider for continental races.

Timofey Kritskiy

Spoiler

i1346.photobucket.com/albums/p690/TheRider11/PCM0032_zps49291477.jpg

What more can be said about this rider. He is currently the double Russian champion and reigning winner of Strade Bianchi, he has a real powerful engine at times Cancellara-esque.

Tomas Vaitkus

Spoiler

i1346.photobucket.com/albums/p690/TheRider11/PCM0014_zpsacf3effa.jpg

A huge character for our squad, his experience will be vital, coming from the dominant sprint train of SES Astra we hope to learn a few things about winning consistently.

Thanks Jesley, lets hope he does well although he won't get many chances for himself this season.

I am a bit disappointed with that Al Jahani, he looks like he has been arrested and if that isn't enough I am pretty sure he is overweight and doesn't know what a bicycle is! Pfft

The news just kept getting better and better as the first race we ever requested an invitation to, the Tour Down Under, accepted our invite, we will be looking for success with former overall winner J.J.Rojas.

MrUfo87
Nice squad for this season. I guess the two riders in the top-34 who are teamless were too expensive? And also nice to see that you have the national champion of Qatar and that you got an invite for the Tour Down Under.

maxime86
nice to see the invite, oh and also how good is gallopin?

The Rider
@ MrUFO -- Thanks Smile
and yes... too expensive OR bad injuries or they are just taking some time off! Wink
We'll show them world tour teams how to ride

@ Maxime - Thanks Smile

Here is his stats, he is riding for Gazprom, since winning the Tour of Poland in 2013 last year he won Kuurne Brussels Kuurne, and finished in the top 10 at flanders.

With the TDU starting one day after this race we decided to split up the riders who weren't on a training camp. The 'lesser' squad were sent to Hong Kong with no big expectations as fitness levels are by no means at maximum.

i1346.photobucket.com/albums/p690/TheRider11/PCM0044_zpsc6bacb64.jpg

The race underway and five riders attack almost immediately to form a break. This race is categorised flat but contains over 1900 meters of climbing with one steep hill taken in multiple times. With 50 kilometres to go Veilleux and Partridge attack and bridge across to the break.

i1346.photobucket.com/albums/p690/TheRider11/PCM0050_zps09a563ee.jpg

At the rear of the peloton Shevchenko gets his first team order, this time it is to collect the water bottles. The break seems under control by FDJ and Colnago with 20 kilometres to go the break have 1:30 but with 15 kilometres to go the break still have 1:30, many riders are just going through the motions.

With 14 kilometres to go our man C.S.Long attacks with Bobbie Traksel but they are quickly brought back by the peloton then the breaks advantage grows out to over 2:00, the seven men would fight out the win, it seemed Qatar Optics would not win the Tour of South China for a second successive year.

i1346.photobucket.com/albums/p690/TheRider11/PCM0055_zps79a99288.jpg

Chinese rider Long is the first to start his sprint, but Veilleux comes out of the wheel and takes the victory for Cyclevox narrowly beating Merlo. For our guys it was a great learning experience especially for the two Ukrainians, with a stronger team sent to Australia this a good showing for the team.

Meh, Gallopin is a beast but Kelderman isn't. I protest! Pfft

Big shock that the team took the Qatar NC! Smile
Shame that the break took the win in China.

@ PFAN and Ian Butler - Thanks, lets hope Farrar and Cavendish aren't there though!

@ Jesleyh - He's probably getting better!
- I was 10% nervous that the rider for Nippo would win the NC.
- We only sent 6 riders to Hong Kong so no big deal!

It really is a privilege to be racing with the cream of the crop of the cycling world in a world tour race. The startlist is just phenomenal and it isn't even the TDF, with the likes of Cavendish, Cancellara, Kittel and Nibali here there are sure to be fireworks.

Despite the depth in quality of the field we have a former TDU winner in our ranks in J.J.Rojas, for many people he is the fourth fastest here in paper.

STAGE 1: Clare - Tanuda 139 KM's

Stage Favourites:
***Cavendish(YTE) **Kittel(EML) *Swift(OGE)

Stage 1 is one for the sprinters, we may not have a massive favourite but for many Rojas is the fourth fastest on paper and should make the top 10.

i1346.photobucket.com/albums/p690/TheRider11/PCM0060_zps05f63049.jpg

After many early attacks eventually a 6 man break manages to escape, including Kreder, Kolesnikov and May.

i1346.photobucket.com/albums/p690/TheRider11/PCM0064_zps670675f0.jpg

To be expected the temperatures were right up there, we really did need veteran Allan Davis and his water carrying abilities. WIth 90 kilometres to go the break's advantage peaked at around 6:30 and from there the '3' big sprinter teams minimised the gap.

i1346.photobucket.com/albums/p690/TheRider11/PCM0066_zps5f9b4ba6.jpg

The break had less than 1:00 with over 20 kilometres to go and were eaten up with more than 10 kilometres to go, the sprint was on the cards.

Into the final, two trains have formed. Orica Greenedge vs. Youtube, J.J.Rojas looked to be going very well and was comfortable on the wheel of Swift, whereas Marcel Kittel seems to be riding his own race.

i1346.photobucket.com/albums/p690/TheRider11/PCM0068_zpsb6c34ad7.jpg

The tactic nevertheless works for the German champion and he just manages to beat the very fast Cavendish and less so Swift, Rojas proved he was the best of the rest finishing well in 4th place.
A crash happened in the closing kilometres in which two of our riders were caught up, Clarke and Nechita were involved.

STAGE 2: Lobethal - Stirling 148 KM's

Stage Favourites:
***Nibali(GPM) **Rolland(EML) *Belka(AGS)

This is one of the GC deciding days at the TDU, with over 2000 meters of climbing taking in four laps of the hills up to Stirling.

i1346.photobucket.com/albums/p690/TheRider11/PCM0079_zpsfbb05772.jpg

After many early unsuccessful attacks from the likes of Cancellara, Waeytens and Larsson, De Maria was the only out in front with 100 kilometres to go and kept a steady advantage of around 1:00.

With 85 kilometres to go, Sterebo, Masskant and Bauer would attack and bridge the gap, Colbrelli attacked but could never bridge the gap. With 60 kilometres to go puncheur and my former rider Van Gheem gave up riding on the front and attacked.

With 40 kilometres to go the break had 4:00 and were making it really difficult for Gazprom and Exxon Mobil to close down the break.

i1346.photobucket.com/albums/p690/TheRider11/PCM0082_zps9898eca4.jpg

With 20 kilometres to go Iriate attacked as did a number of other riders, this and fatigue saw the break's gap diminish. With 7 kilometres to go we are all back together as the final hills to Stirling beckon.

With a few kilometres to go Cardoso(SES Astra) attacks with Nibali countering and our very own Izagirre countering Nibali. The latter two ride away and create a gap.

i1346.photobucket.com/albums/p690/TheRider11/PCM0083_zps66fd24d2.jpg

Into the final uphill sprint, the steepest parts over, it is surely between Nibali and Ion Izagirre but Gorka Izagirre (Iberia) comes through quickly and the former TDU winner takes the win and demotes the two late escapees down a step on the podium. Our very own J.J.Rojas finishes the quickest of anyone and just gets beaten by our teammate to 4th place, both finishing in the leading group of 25. What a stage for the team!
