Tour of Britain - Stage 7
Bath - Southampton

Todays 163 flat stage takes us from Bath, down to the coast and along to a sprint finish in central Southampton. There are 4 categorized climbs early on to settle the KoM competition. But the start line had an air of surprise this morning. GC leader Karl Hammarling did not sign in, and has abandoned the race. Bu the peloton has no time to wonder as the racing begins.
The days break came out of the first attacks and contains Sentjens(RIJ), Holmes(RAL), Mederel(SOJ), Koerber(TSP), Oronte(JBC), Kennaugh(SKY) and Moss(IGS). They built a maximum gap of 5'30.
Holmes took a few of the climbs to steal the jersey and claim the competition win! We pick up with 25km left to race.

Comment (Karl)
I'll keep this brief. I took the decision not to race today, and it was the easiest choice i have made all year. The man that collapsed yesterday was Erik, my dad. He has had a heart attack and is in intensive care at Bristol City Hospital. His condition is critical and it is not known if he will make it. I'll let you know whats happening as things develop

Tour of Britain - Stage 8
London ITT

This is a 35km around central London. The early leader was Baldwin. He was beaten by Zirbel who held the best time for a while. McCartney then surprised everyone when he went quickest just before the real outsiders set off.
Poux went through all the checks quickest, but was instantly beaten by Craddock who was behind him on the road.
Only Kwiatkowski beat Craddocks time, and even then it was tight!

Comment (Not Karl)
7 out of 8 stage wins, 4 out of 5 competitions... I'd call that a bloody brilliant result! It also pretty much guarantees PCT promotion! Yay etc etc
Karl blog coming soon, i would not miss it if i were you, nor the U23 WC!

Tough Time

This is not a proper blog piece, but i will be writing one at the start of the off-season. No i am here to update you about Erik and Karl.

Erik, my brother, sadly passed away last night. He suffered a massive heart attack during the podium ceremonies after the Tour of Britain Stage 6. He spent the next days in intensive care. The doctors tried their hardest but to no avail. This has been a massive shock to the family, he was only 45.

Karl will not ride the U23 WC ITT, but he will still tackle the RR. Johan will still take part in both races. This is a tough time for Karl, and the whole family. Fortunately we are all here for him and each other. I also know that Karl has great friends to help him through this.

R.I.P. Erik

There won't be any reports as everything was simmed. Couldn't get the U23 to work or export properly either so just go with it, thanks

U23 ITT
All eyes were focused on stand-out favorite Craddock (USA) to win this. But over the 31km course one man surprised all....

1st Paillot (FRA)
2nd Craddock (USA)
3rd Wellens (BEL)

U23 RR
This was a showdown between Italy and France. Both teams held numerous potential winners. Belgium and Australia also boasted decent chances at a win.
The break consisted of riders from South Africa, Norway, Denmark and Colombia. But that break was caught as the race entered the final 4 laps of the 190km course.
Instantly Boswell (USA), Watson (AUS) and Hammarling (GBR) went away and looked threatening. At the end of lap 1 they had been joined by Veldhuizen (DEN) and Livshits (RUS). The Italians and French were making the chase behind.
Entering the 3rd lap the lead group held 1'15 over the ever tiring chase. At the end of the lap, with 10km to go, the lead was 1'30. With only a climb and decent to go the winner was most likely to come from the attackers.
Behind Wackerman (ITA), Cattaneo(ITA), Barguil(FRA) and Bardet (FRA) teamed up and moved away. Up front Boswell and Watson tried to attack but could not shake the other riders.
Over the top for the final time Livshits held a very small gap over Watson and Hammarling. Veldhuizen and Boswell were a few more seconds back. The Wackerman chase group crested 1'00 down, and the reduced peloton 30" after them.
With 1km to go the road flattened out. Livshits was joined by Hammarling and Watson for a three man duel to win. Watson went early with 500m to go, knowing he was the weakest finisher. Hammarling dragged Livshits across with 200 to go! But on the line it was Livshits who took the win!

1st Livshits (RUS)
2nd Watson (AUS)
3rd Hammarling (GBR)
4th Veldhuizen (DEN)
5th Boswell (USA)
6th Wackerman (ITA)
7th Lutsenko (KAZ)
8th Cattaneo (ITA)
9th Bardet (FRA)
10th Schwarzman (GER)

Elite ITT
Both Martin and Cancellara were underwhelming, leaving it wide open for Wiggo to take the win.

Good to see Hammarling get a Bronze medal in the U23 RR Grin

Jesleyh
Kwiatkovski got a nice 4th place in the TT, just behind ... ...

Well, you understand me, I don't need to say it Pfft

And of course, Livshits won the U23. What a talent he is Grin
No Dutch guy in the U23 RR Top 10, that disappoints me a bit, although Veldhuizen sounds Dutch, that's at least something...
And at last, Hammarling did a great job in the U23 RR!

Thanks, was a tough race to get him there. Took a lot of luck

@Jesl
Knew that Wilco would make you happy. I expect him to take the TDF White jersey in 2014.
Steenhook was the best Dutch rider in 15th. Van Barrle was 5th in the ITT as well.
