None of the 'big' cobblestoners came here for some reason. Happened last season too - but I actually like it because it just makes it a really crazy, unpredictable race |

Now that mpardo is going to pcm12 to do his story, the 09 section needs a new story-teller again.
3 YEARS LATER...
I've kept playing this fantasy game and the year is now 2016. The League has been taken over by an enigmatic cycling aficionado known only as "The Astro Kid", who has changed the name to The Astro League.
Vincenzo Nibali won both the 2014 & 2015 Diamond League title but his legs are starting to age, and he will face stiff competition from others this year.
Let's find out what will happen in the 2016 Astro League season...

September 2015
Lombardy, Italy
David Pringle (Commentator, Diamond TV)
Thanks for joining us here in Italy for will be the final day of racing in the Diamond League's 5-year existence, before it becomes known as the Astro League.
There's no sign of now-double league champion and also defending
champion at this race, Vincenzo Nibali, on the start line.
He can set off on his winter holiday early, safe in the knowledge that
no-one can challenge him for the 2015 league championship now.
Let's get into the race where Nibali's team-mate on the Acqua
team, Eros Capecchi, is attacking on the final climb of the day.

And he holds onto the line to make it 4 out 5 Italian winners in
Lombardy in the Diamond League's existence!

A gleaming sun shines high above the action, and lights the way for a new era ahead... The Astro Era! |

Sounds good, but I reckon a new thread is called for with the opening post detailing everything what is going on, rules etc. |

@The Rider - I've added a brief About section to the first post for those unfamiliar with the Diamond League. I'd prefer to keep it in the same thread though seeing as its the same storyline, game and structure as before, just a few years later
@NTTHRASH - yep just like Dave Pringle said it! |

December 2015
Diamond League HQ, Lapland
Josh Sanders (Host, Astro TV)
We're here on Astro TV for the network's first broadcast!
Welcome one and all to the official presentation of the 2016 Astro League, formerly known as the Diamond League!
The Astro Kid was supposed to be here himself, but he... well he's not here, is he? Anyway, no worry, I guess I'll keep things short and simple today...
I will now present the lucky 18 teams who have been invited to ride in the Astro League:
Agritubel
Acqua
BBVA
Cargolux
Crown
Eurosport
Euskaltel
Evian
Flaminia
Gazzetta
Landbouwkrediet
Lotto
Quickstep
Radioshack
Repsol
Rossignol
Spar
T-Mobile
So some names that will be familiar to followers of the Diamond League, but plenty of new names in the mix too...
We will see a Luxembourg-based team for the first time in Cargolux, who managed to bring in Andy Schleck as team leader.
Also, it will be interesting to see the return of the (almost) all-Basque team, Euskaltel, who last raced all the way back in season 1 of the diamond league, before they were taken over by Saunier.
Diamond League champion Vincenzo Nibali will continue with the Acqua team.
Lotto won last years team championship, but haven't fared quite so well in the transfer window.
And sadly no Rabobank of course, after they cancelled their sponsorship following Robert Gesink's positive test at the 2015 Tour de France.
Gesink will be unable to compete again until after the 2017 Tour, when he will be 31.
Now, the race calendar, including the number of league points for the victor of each race:
Down Under Classic (25)
Doha Cup (25)
Asante Cup (25)
Copa do Rio (25)
Gent - Wevelgem (50)
Tour of Flanders (75)
Tirreno-Adriatico (25)
Paris - Roubaix (100)
Fleche Wallone (50)
Amstel Gold Race (50)
Liege - Bastogne - Liege (75)
Tour of Denmark (25)
Milan - San Remo (100)
Giro d'Italia (75)
Tour of Germany (50)
Tour de Suisse (50)
Tour de France (100)
Tour of Belgium (50)
USA Tour (50)
Clasica San Sebastien (50)
Vuelta a Espana (75)
World Championships ITT (75)
World Championships RR (100)
Siena Cup (25)
Il Lombardia (75)
Mt Fuji Challenge (25)
Okay, I think that's about all we've got ti-
At this point, The Astro Kid cartwheels into the room, bleach-blonde dreadlocks, 3D-vision goggles, hawaiian shirt and all...

Not at all! I think once you meet him (later today/tommorow) you will find him a most sincere, authoritative and corporate leader of the cycling world... or maybe not |

Decemeber 2015
Diamond League HQ, Lapland
The Astro Kid (Cycling Aficionado)
After sleeping in (I was deeply engrossed in this weird dream where it was 2020, and some Austrian guy called Pfanzel or something took over the cycling world...) I had rushed down to the Diamond League HQ as fast as I could, put on my 3d glasses and burst into the building!
Wadsup MoThAcHuCkAs!!!!
Thanks for the info Joshy-boi, but lets cut the crap, it's time to get funky!
I'd like to invite each of the Astro League directeur sportives to come on up here and show us watcha got, realllll funky now yo!
After a briefly confused pause, the managers and representatives shuffled their way slowly up to the stage, and spieled some shizzle about their team:
ACQUA

We're looking to go one better than last season and win the league. We have a wealth of options for the Grand Tours, not least 2-time league champion and 4-time Grand Tour winner Mr. Nibali
AGRITUBEL

We are riding in our second year of existence, after finishing 15th in the 2015 league. Keep an eye on our rapidly-developing talent Guy Bourillon!
BBVA

We are a new team and will look towards Chris Froome, JJ Rojas and Rui Costa for results, and hope to draw upon the experience of Alberto Contador.
CARGOLUX

We're excited to be the first ever Luxembourgian team in the league. Jungels and Andy Schleck are designated leaders. (N.Nigro is Sanmarinese)
CROWN

Hopefully the cycling world is happy to see a Danish team again after CSC folded. Ali Horsfall and Alexander Kristoff will lead the squad.
EUROSPORT

We're happy to become the third French team in the league. We'll look to attack and pull out results wherever possible.
EUSKALTEL

We've reformed to make our first appearance in the league since 2011. We're looking to promote Basque talent, but the management have allowed the signature of Argentine Daniel Diaz to bolster the squad.
EVIAN

We're in our second year of existence, and hoping to improve upon our 17th placing in last season's league.
FLAMINIA

We're a new Italian-Colombian team, proudly presenting Nairo Quintana as our team leader.
LANDBOUWKREDIET

We're a new Belgian set-up looking forward to the classics season and backing De Gendt and Cavendish in the Grand Tours.
GAZZETTA

Ciao! Gazetta dello sport proudly presents our latest sponsorship endeavour, featuring talents such as Medin Matulin and neo-pro Quattrocchi!
LOTTO

We've been here since day 1 of the Diamond League and we're looking to defend our 2015 title as team champions.
QUICKSTEP

We've also been here since the start, and are looking to build upon a solid 7th league place from last year.
RADIOSHACK

We've handpicked the best of the crop available after Coca-Cola and HTC folded, including World Champion Tyler Farrar. This will be an experimental year for us.
REPSOL

We lost a few guys to new set-ups this year, but we've still got the resources to win, and match our 6th league place from 2015.
ROSSIGNOL

We are a new set-up who will go by the Rossignol name but consider ourselves more Alpine/International than French. We've mustered together a strong climbing squad.
T-MOBILE

Our promising talents will help us improve on our debut season where we disappointingly finished bottom of the table.
Thank y'all for y'all presentations y'all! I'll be seeing y'all Mothachuckas in a few days to ee-la-bo-rate further on what y'all can expect from the 2016 season. Peace y'all!

Silly Astro Kid forgot to mention the Spar team's presentation, I'll do it for him.
SPAR

We're a new team, who signed many of Rabobank's riders now that team has disbanded. We have a decent all-round squad featuring Boom, Bos and first-timers Kelderman and Albronda |

I think SPAR are definitely a team for the future. Btw. What happened to Kruiswijk and Mollema?

Hmm I never put those two in the database at the start of the game and I've been adding mostly created riders since then. At least Kelderman makes his league debut this season |

(Online Blogger)
I got the chance to go along and see the unveiling of the new Astro League Headquarters in Paris this morning... a really nice work of architecture!
Apparently it will replace the old Diamond League HQ in Lapland for all Astro League administrative purposes.
The Astro Kid made a brief appearence wearing stilts and a toga! what a... charismatic... individual he is!
He thanked us for coming and suchlike, but here's the interesting bit - he said that the Astro League would be welcoming a special guest cyclist to make it 181 riders in the 2016 season.
Last year, the Diamond League welcomed it's first ever special guest. It was Bradley Wiggins, who went on to win the 2015 Tour de France.
I wonder who it could be this year? Another big name perhaps?
Catch you later,
Ronaldinyo |
