Yes but the breakaway is riding on high pace (Vino, scarponi and others gave up), and he passed by some riders, supposed to be better clmbers than he is, with the bottles and without suffering.

According to Monfort (before the stage), Horner and Schleck are supposed to try something.

Knees can spend all his energy now and then come in grupetto. Other GC climbers have to save energy for later and so it looks like Knees is looking much better - while he will drop soon after his high energy efforts at the front ( I believe  )

The group is still large. That is probably more about Vanendert having a bad day than them being abnormally good. I'm not denying that they are absurdly strong this year, but this isn't evidence of it.
