Coming up soon is the Tour of Belgium, where our sponsors wish for us to win a stage. One of our final warmup races for it is the EOS Talinn GP, where Erki Putsep and Janek Tombak will hope to win.
Aleksandr Pliuschin is back for us to test his legs before the hilly upcoming Tour du Luxembourg and has a free role in Estonia while Anuar Manan will hope to deliver a result.
With 10km to go, Manan is well placed in Hagen's wheel and we are at the start of the longest section in the circuit where there is no descents - why is this important? Its the ideal place for an attack and there goes Pliuschin, with Amore Vita's Gasparre for company. They have a fairly decent gap by the time the next descent does arrive.
Disaster in the peleton! An idiot Ukranian has fallen sideways onto Manan, taking him out ~ conveniently allowing Flaminia's sprinter to grab Hagen's wheel instead.
Pliuschin is now our only chance of a result, but Gasparre is a stronger sprinter. Nevertheless, Pliuschin goes flat out, relaying at 99% sacrificing the win in order to take 2nd. The sprint starts with 2km to go and Gasparre soon takes the lead.
And wins. Great 2nd for Pliuschin though which takes him to 2nd in the CT standings.

Yup, definately deserved the win but 2nd is good enough. All points are useful if I am to keep top of the CT standings with my fairly limited squad.
Giro Update
The next Giro stage is the epic Zoncolon climb and Danilo di Luca is in the driving seat. But having taken 16 minutes out of Di Luca in the past 2 stages to Tre Crime di Livaredo and Lienz, Remy di Gregorio sits second just 1 minute behind. Cunego is nearly 5 minutes behind in 5th. Di Luca and Bennatti have both taken 3 stages, while Petacchi and Mark Cavendish have each won 2.
Eindhoven
We have hig hopes of receiving a wildcard for the Eindhoven TTT.
Neuseen Classics
Troels Vinther was an unpopular victor in Germany having attacked from the 10 man breakaway which included Rhys Pollock. Vinther had not been working at all since Unibet were chasing and attacked late on. Pollock could have counter attacked but chose not to, Vinther slipped away and would not be caught. Further heartbreak came for Pollock as his hopes of 2nd were dashed in the final few hundred metres as the pelton's sprinters surged past. Pollock ended 10th while Manan was 6th.

We have a sponsor goal to win a Stage of the Tour of Belgium and I have 3 options in great fitness ready to take up the challenge.
Anuar Manan is in almost perfect condition for the 3 sprinters stages: 97 Fitness! (78/80 + 19/20). The Malaysian has recently grabbed win number 1, hoepfully he will take a 2nd too.
Jamie Staff (93 Pts) and Chris Hoy (89 Pts) will both be looking forward to Stage 3, by which time they should be even fitter. My two time-trialists are my main hope for the completion of the goal by winning the 16km TT.
Daniel Lloyd is our best Hilly rider, but it is unlikely that he will get anything from the decisive Stage 4.

Stage 1
Having anticipated the likes of Boonen, Steegmens, Cooke, and McEwen we were in for a very pleasant surprise! The two best sprinters in this tour are Tyler Farrar and Anuar Manan! I also doubt that Farrar's fitness points are in the high 90s.
Even better for Manan was that when it came to the sprint there was just one long train and Manan took the perfect position:
He waited until 1km to go with the Chocolaude Jacques rider Van der Linden was still up front, but Manan made his move and won! Sponsor goal complete!
Manan has definately proved to be the best sprinter in this tour, hopefully i can make good use of the Black leaders jersey tomorrow and do the double.

At first glance, Stage 2 isnt too bad, but there are 4 steep hills in the middle - 2 of which are cobbled. The longest of the cobbled ones is at 15%!
After the cobbled sections 8 riders got a gap on a seriously depleted field - 5 Unibet, 2 Predictor and 1 Quick Step but they didnt work well together and dropped back to the peleton, leaving just the two survivors of the breakaway, Scherilinckx and Ickx, ahead of the bunch.
The peleton was down to 37 and Manan was starting to struggle, the cobbled climbs had taken a lot of effort, plus I doubt a cobbled rating of 56 helped much. He got dropped along with British teammates Stannard, Staff and Lloyd, leaving only Hoy left in the peleton.
Hoy would now face 30km of flat roads to try and hang on to the peleton. With 8km to go, Scherilinckx was caught and it seemed that there were still a lot of sprinters left.
Steurs led the sprint but then stopped and was passed by Den Bakker. Den Bakker was looking good but could not hold off Greg Van Avermaet and Van Avermaet took victory.
Chris Hoy clung on to the pack and could now grab the leaders jersey in tomorrow's time trial.

May Report
Races
Ind. Ranking
Team Ranking
Cyanide's Rider of the Month:
Danilo di Luca
Took victory in the Tour de Romandie and is all but certain to win the Giro d'Italia.
And for once, the best young rider deserves a mention: (Its my first 'award'!!!)
DFL Rider of the Month:
Aleksandr Pliuschin
Although both Stannard and Manan has great performances in May, Pliuschin takes the award, largely thanks to our first Stage Race victory: Quatre Jours de Dunkerque. He took the Overall, Best young rider, a stage and 2 top 10s in other stages. The Moldovan was also 5th in the Rund um den Henniger Turn and 2nd in the EOS Tallinn GP.
Brit of the Month:
Mark Cavendish
Cav has won Stages 2 and 9 of the Giro along with 6 other top 10 finishes. This month was very good for Britain as the country went from 0 wins to 4 wins. With Cavendish's 2 Giro stages, Stannard in Colliers Classic and Millar in the prologue of Romandie. Millar also took 3rd in a hilly stage in Catalunya.
Look Ahead:
A very hectic schedule. Watch for Pliuschin in the Tour of Luxembourg.

Since you seem more interested in the Giro than the actual story bit:
Davide Rebellin won the Zoncolon stage and Di Luca looks set to grab victory. Remy di Gregorio cracked on Zoncolan but shot up to 2nd after Stage 19 thanks to yet another break - this time ending in a stage win. He plummeted out of the top 5 in the next day's time trial though.
While I talk about time trials, here's another one. Im odds on favourite to win with either Hoy or Staff. With a form of +3, it is Staff who wins today!
Hoy settles for second with a daily form of -3, but he has taken the race lead nonetheless!

When the peleton reached the Huy there were many attacks for KoM points but Verheyen keeped his going, Manan had survived the Huy and successfully edged 3rd in the next intermediate sprint - just edging out Zanotti.
5 kilometres later is the 2nd climb the Cote de Fraiture and Frischkorn is caught by Verheyen, having lost 17 minutes in just under 40km.
The 2 riders seen attacking from the peleton above are van Avermaet and Ten Dam and they go clear. Others attack but these 2 are not seen again, with Van Avermaet able to tage his 2nd stage win plus the Leaders jersey, Points jersey and Young riders jersey.
Amazingly, the whole DFL team has survived the hills and all riders chase hard at 99% in the last 8km following the final climb. While 10 wont be caught, 5 have just a tiny gap as the sprint begins, and Manan does all the rest taking a surprise 11th.
