Skoda - Orlen Professional Cycling Team | May - Giro d'Italia
brewers90
@sutty, yeah, but it's these small margins that make all the difference at the top level. Hopefully Peter will be making his way to the podium soon though.

March review/April preview/News will be up later today!

Latest News and Updates

The latest news from the cycling world at the end of March, which some people would say is the real start of the season, with big week long stage races in France, Italy and Spain as well as the first monument of the season in Italy. Here's the round-up:

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/PCM0001-56.jpg
March has seen big wins for Contador, Cancellara, Cavendish, De Gendt and Boonen in the five WorldTour races. It was also a good month for Hoste, Rolland and Hushovd.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/PCM0002-43.jpg
The March rider of the month is Contador for his superb win in Paris-Nice. The young rider of the month isn't Pliuschin for once! Instead Mathieu Boulo takes the award for taking the KoM prize at the Critérium International. Interesting that they decided he was more deserving than Kruijswijk who finished second in the same race.

Rankings
i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/PCM0004-52.jpg
Thor Hushovd maintains his lead from the Tour Down Under with a solid second in Gent - Wevelgem, while Thomas has picked up results in Australia, Tirreno - Adriatico, Milan - San Remo and Gent - Wevelgem. Superb start for the young Welshman. Hesjedal was on the podium in Paris - Nice and in Catalunya, while Vicioso is consistently picking up good results. Cancellara and Boonen will probably be shooting up the rankings in the next week.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/PCM0005-44.jpg
In the teams rankings, Hushovd and Thomas' respective teams are unsurprisingly at the top. Movistar, Katusha and Garmin have also started well.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/PCM0006-53.jpg
The continental tour is led by Leif Hoste after wins in Le Samyn and Driedaagse van West-Vlaanderen. Grega Bole is still in second but is a long way behind the Belgian.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/PCM0007-48.jpg
Accent Jobs are destroying the Continental tour at the moment thanks to Hoste and Scheirlinckx. Bole's team Skoda - Orlen are way adrift in second ahead of Italian team Farnese Vini, Belgians Topsport Vlaanderen and French big boys Europcar.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/PCM0008-40.jpg
The CQ ranking is led by Hushovd (again!), but Cancellara is breathing down his neck. Vicioso, Thomas and Kiryienka round out the top five.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/PCM0010-26.jpg
Movistar are still a country mile ahead of everyone in the teams' rankings thanks to more top performances from their legion of climbers. Sky and BMC have Thomas and Hushovd to thank for their placing, with Katusha the only other team near them. Accent Jobs are the best Continental team, with new boys Skoda - Orlen just outside the top ten and the final team to have broken the 1000 points barrier.

Here is the April news bulletin from Skoda - Orlen Professional Cycling Team:

March was a fairly quiet month for the team, with our wildcard applications being rejected, meaning we had a two week break in the middle of the month. Nevertheless, a podium place in the Giro del Friuli, as well as great results in Strade Bianche and the Critérium International. A stage 1-2 in the Settimana Coppi e Bartali was also a superb day for the team, despite the overall ranking not really being the best for us. These results keep us up in second in the Conti rankings, and up ahead of a lot of WorldTour teams in the CQ rankings.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/PCM0008-35.jpg
The team took part in its first ever team time trial in Italy, giving us the chance to get a photo of the team all together in a competitive scenario. The result wasn't the best, but they did at least look great in their train!

Individually, the month has again been dominated by Bole, with a podium in Friuli, fourth place at the Strade Bianche and a stage win in the Settimana Coppi e Bartali. Good performances from Peter Velits, Borut Bozic and Simon Spilak aswell.

Image of the Month

Grega Bole leads Borut Bozic across the line for a superb 1-2 on the first stage of Settimana Coppi e Bartali.

April Race Preview

April starts off with the GP Miguel Indurain hilly one day race, before heading to the Circuit Sarthe - Pays de La Loire in France. The Giro dell'Appennino in Italy and the Vuelta a Castilla y Leon stage race in Spain take place in the middle of the month as well as the team's first and, probably, only cobbled race, the Tro-Bro Léon in France. The end of the month is marked by sprinter's races, with two in Denmark, GP Herning and the Himmerland Rundt, as well as the Rund um Koln in Germany. The final one day race of the month is in Italy, the GP Industria and Artigianato. Added to this, we will definitely have another stage race at the end of the month. At the moment, we have the Presidential Cycling Tour of Turkey pencilled in for the squad. However, we have applied for a wildcard for the Tour de Romandie, and should the wildcard be accepted, we will go there instead of Turkey.

Transfers and Contracts

Andriy Grivko agreed a two year contract extension with us as a luxury team mate, which we are delighted with.
i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/PCM0012-18.jpg

Despite some tough negotiations, it is looking increasingly unlikely that Kiserlovski will be staying with us past the end of the season. His agent said that he wants to wait until July, to see which other teams are interested in him. We remain hopeful that he will change his mind.

The Future

We have already clinched the team's first signing for next season. After extensive scouting of the rider, and after he claimed a podium place in the GP Portugal, Oleksander Volovyk, a Ukrainian puncher, will join the team as a stagiare in August. He looks very promising, and we hope to offer him a chance to fulfil his potential.
i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/PCM0013-15.jpg

And Finally...

Skoda - Orlen Professional Cycling Team are delighted to announce that our wildcard for the Giro d'Italia has been accepted. We can't wait for May to hit the roads of our first ever grand tour, which will oddly be on the roads of Denmark. We have already picked a preliminary squad of eleven riders, who are preparing for the Giro, and will obviously be trimmed to nine for the event itself.

See you on the roads in April,

Our first race in April is our first race in Spain, the Gran Premio Miguel Indurain, which is held in Navarre. This is a tough race, and with previous winners including Joaquin Rodriguez and Samu Sanchez, we know that it is not one for the average rider. Everybody is excited about finally going to Spain to race, not least the boss!
Skoda - Orlen have a joint leadership here with Kocjan and Kiserlovski taking up the mantle and hoping to achieve a top ten finish, at least. Leopold Konig becomes the final rider to make his debut for the team as he looks to build his fitness for future races. Unfortunately, with it being a Spanish race, we have to compete against Movistar, who have, as always, sent a formidable squad. 2009 winner David de la Fuente is also here.

Gran Premio Miguel Indurain Report

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/PCM0001-58.jpg

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/PCM0002-44.jpg
The early break had just four riders in it including van Staeyen and Wetterhall. They got a maximum gap of 40 seconds, but Movistar just didn't want anybody to get away today.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/PCM0003-46.jpg
After they were brought back, a much bigger group got away with Konig latching on to the back of it. They got a minute ahead before further attacks marked the end of that group aswell.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/PCM0004-53.jpg
Eventually, a group of just three riders got away. Fuchs (NSP) and Anton (Burgos) were joined by Serbian champ Zsolt Der as they started to hit the serious climbs. Anton would not hang on for long.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/PCM0005-45.jpg
Before long, Der had to let go of Fuchs' rear wheel aswell, as the German was in some form today. He was now alone four minutes ahead of the main bunch with a few ambitious attackers in between with no chance of staying away from the Movistar-driven peloton.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/PCM0006-54.jpg
As the final climb approached, Grivko attacked and went past Fuchs. They were the only two now in front of a severely reduced peloton. Unfortunately, Grivko never stood a chance and was caught soon after.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/PCM0007-49.jpg
Bruseghin, Moreno and Intxausti were still tapping out a phenomenal rhythm on the front of the peloton, which as you can see, now contained about 20 riders only. Kocjan, Kiserlovski and the cooked Grivko were all in this group but only just. None of them had anything left to attack.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/PCM0008-41.jpg
Sure enough, ex-Spanish champion, Plaza looked over his shoulder and challenged the others before charging off up the road. Bosisio and Pozzovivo were the only riders that could go with him. These three would battle for the victory.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/PCM0009-35.jpg
All of Movistar's hard work was worth it, as Plaza easily ook the sprint ahead of Pozzovivo and Bosisio. Modolo and Savini ensured Colnago had three riders in the top five, whilst Kocjan came home a solid seventh. Kiserlovski was distanced on the final climb and finished down in 17th, with Grivko just ahead in 15th.

Team Summary
We came here hoping for a top ten and got seventh, so mission accomplished. With Movistar having such a strong team, we were lucky to get as high as we did, because the pace was too high over the final few climbs for our boys, Kocjan just hanging on for the final sprint. Grivko was very strong, despite his attack, he still held on and finished ahead of Kiserlovski. Next race is in France, the four-day Circuit Sarthe - Pays de la Loire. See you there.

The Ronde van Vlaanderen is the second monument of the season and is the most important race in Flanders. It is well over 200km and is defined by a series of short, steep and often cobbled climbs, including the Paterberg, Koppenberg and the Muur-Kapelmuur. The anticipated race between Boonen and Cancellara turned into a bit of a damp squib as Spartacus easily saw him off. The main challenge, infact, came from Scandinavia and Spain, as Breschel, Hushovd and Flecha ran him close but Fabian took the victory. Boonen rounded out the top five.

Our next race is the sprinter's paradise, the Circuit Sarthe Pays de la Loire. This race contains four stages, three of which should end in sprints, with the other one being a very short time trial. Our leader here should be Hutarovich with him being our quickest rider. However, with his fitness being very low, we may have to switch to Kocjan, who comes here in good form after his result in Spain the other day. Other key riders here are Gazvoda, who will target the time trial as well as being a key leadout man, and Stybar, who will be free to try some attacks. The winner will almost certainly be a sprinter, because the time trial isn't long enough to produce big time gaps for the TT specialists.

Circuit Sarthe Stage 1 Report

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/PCM0002-45.jpg
Favourites: Belletti, Dumoulin, Casper, Flahaut, Hutarovich

We won't be expecting much today with Yauheni's fitness being so low, but we'll have to see if we can put in an attack later on in the stage.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/PCM0005-46.jpg
The BotD contained an original seven rider group, including Bosisio, Miyazawa and Gael Malacarne. They battled for the mountain sprint, which was won by Malacarne.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/PCM0003-47.jpg
Later on, two more riders joined them, including Martias. This group of nine pulled out a gap of six and a half minutes before the sprinters' teams ended their fun.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/PCM0006-55.jpg
With just over 20km to go, Stybar tried an attack and it was successful, as he rode across and past the breakaway on his own. Unfortunately, as usual, the pace in the last 10km made it impossible for him to stay away and he was swept up by the peloton.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/PCM0007-50.jpg
As Nizzolo led the peloton with Gallopin on his wheel, Kocjan was trying to get Hutarovich to the front, but it looked like the Slovenian would have to go himself today because Huta was struggling just to stay on Jure's wheel.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/PCM0008-42.jpg
The sprint was extremely close but it was Belletti who just edged out Szczawinski and Fischer. Kocjan took ninth with Hutarovich in eleventh. We have to hope for better later in the race.

Team Summary
Pretty standard day for us although Stybar tried to liven it up with his late attack. It looked like he might make it for a while, but the peloton was just too quick in the end. As far as the sprint goes, it looks like it will be difficult to get near the podium with the form that Hutarovich has got. Tomorrow is the time trial, then we'll have to try more attacking on stage 3.

Circuit Sarthe Stage 2 Report

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/PCM0001-60.jpg
Favourites: Zabriskie, Engoulvent, Sergent, Machado, Voss

This is the only stage where non-sprinters should be able to gain time. It is only 6km though, so the time gaps will be small. We don't have the best TT men but Gazvoda and Kocjan can both pull out good times on this short, flat blast through Angers.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/PCM0003-48.jpg
The first competitive time of the day was set by Yohan Offredo of FDJ, who finished the course in 8'53. This time would just be good enough for a top ten at the end of the day.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/PCM0005-47.jpg
The first of Radioshack's many great time triallists on the course, Markel Irizar went three seconds quicker than Offredo at the top of the leaderboard.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/PCM0007-51.jpg
Unfortunately for Irizar, and everyone else, Dave Zabriskie was next across the line and he went 11 seconds quicker. Unsurprisingly, nobody got close to this, and DZ picked up his second TT victory of the season, the first being in Qatar.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/PCM0008-43.jpg
Another Portuguese Radioshack rider, Machado, then went second six seconds down on Zabriskie. A good enough time for fourth at the end of the day.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/PCM0010-28.jpg
The challengers kept coming from Radioshack, with the next rider being Kiwi, Jesse Sergent. He beat teammate Machado by a single second, and was later joined by Ladagnous five seconds down.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/PCM0011-22.jpg
Jimmy Engoulvent was expected to be the closest challenger to Zabriskie, but he could only go sixth, six seconds down.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/PCM0012-20.jpg
Our final rider also happened to be our quickest rider. Kocjan went fairly well and placed 20th, 18 seconds down. He beat Gazvoda by three seconds and stays just inside the top twenty.

Team Summary
Well, we were never going to get up near the top today, but we are quite disappointed with Gazvoda's performance, a feeling which is shared by Gregor himself. Jure put in a great time and hopefully he can get himself in to the top ten on the two remaining stages. We need to get in to breaks, pick up bonus seconds and try to get a stage win.

Circuit Sarthe Stage 3 Report

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/PCM0001-61.jpg
Favourites: Belletti, Dumoulin, Bonnet, Flahaut, Gallopin

This is the most difficult stage with the finish line being placed on the top of a small hill. We're not talking the Mont Ventoux, but it should mean that the punchy sprinters are to the fore today. Therefore, we hope that Kocjan can get himself into the mix.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/PCM0007-52.jpg
Stybar knew what he had to do today, and he got straight to it, countering the very first attack. After 14 other riders rode across, Zdenek knew he had to shake them off, so he went solo, while the rest were caught by the peloton.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/PCM0002-46.jpg
Eventually, he was joined by ten other riders, and this was the BotD. The strongest rider in the group was again Bosisio, who was being very active in this race. They built up a maximum gap of seven minutes.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/PCM0003-49.jpg
But just as they hit the finishing climb for the second time it was over as the peloton, being driven along by AG2R and Garmin, ate up the remnants of the breakaway. It would be a bunch sprint now.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/PCM0004-54.jpg
Just before the final climb, water plus a clipped wheel = disaster!! Ladagnous and Nathan Haas collided, causing half of the peloton to hit the deck. Hutarovich was blocked by it, whilst Stybar and Hocevar were brought down. Aljaz was in a lot of pain.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/PCM0005-48.jpg
In the sprint, it was Polish rider, Szczawinski who took it just ahead of Fischer and Gallopin, while Kocjan got blocked but finished sixth with a quick last 300 metres. Only 21 riders finished in the lead group, including Zabriskie, who keeps the yellow jersey.

Team Summary
Stybar made sure that he was in the break today with a lot of attacking at the start, including riding solo for over 10km, which was great for the sponsors. Unfortunately, with Garmin's strong team, it was always going to come down to a bunch sprint. That massive crash made it a bit more hectic than we were expecting and Kocjan ended up getting blocked by Marycz and by the time he was past him, the front five were well up the road, but a strong finish ensured him sixth spot. Good ride by him. Meanwhile, the crash affected most of the riders here in some way. Five riders couldn't continue the race, including Aljaz Hocevar. The young Slovenian domestique will unfortunately be out of action until late May after breaking his wrist in the heavy fall. Fortunately, all of our other riders are ready to go for the final stage tomorrow.

Kocjan only 18s of the Overall Lead, what's your plan for the final stageFrown

Thanks for the question Sutty Smile,

I think it will be impossible to get away from the peloton because it's pan flat and Garmin have a strong team. I might try to get some bonus seconds at the intermediate sprints at the start, and then see what Jure can do in the final sprint. Fingers crossed. Smile

Circuit Sarthe Stage 4 Report

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/PCM0007-53.jpg
Favourites: Dumoulin, Traksel, Kocjan, Szczawinski, Fischer

This final stage is flat to all intents and purposes, which means it should come down to a bunch sprint. However, the last 500m are up a 4% incline, which should favour people like Kocjan and Traksel. We will be going for the intermediate sprints aswell to try to gain some seconds.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/PCM0008-44.jpg
The first sprint was just seven kilometres into the stage and Kocjan easily won it to gain six seconds. A breakaway formed not long after this and that meant that the second sprint was cleaned up by these escapees.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/PCM0009-37.jpg
However, we weren't going to let the same happen at the third sprint as the team brought them back, allowing Kocjan to pick up another six seconds. This left him six seconds back on Zabriskie.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/PCM0010-29.jpg
After this, a break was allowed to form, including Stybar yet again, as well as five other riders. Edgar Pinto was the best rider in the group, but he had been caught up in yesterday's crash so was quite a way down on GC.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/PCM0011-23.jpg
Pinto was the last of the escapees to be brought back with one lap of the final circuit to go. The pace was extremely high and the peloton was strung out, but Kocjan was being kept at the front by Mihaylov and Huzarski.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/PCM0012-21.jpg
The main leadouts were by AG2R and FDJ, working for Casper and Bonnet. The other sprinters were all behind these two riders, including Kocjan just behind Traksel at the very top of the picture.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/PCM0013-17.jpg
And at the finish, there was a wall of green as Szczawinski, Turgot and Traksel took the podium places. The victory ensured the Polish rider would win the overall here, whilst Kocjan faded to a poor 17th position and just missed out on a podium place.

Team Summary
The plan worked today apart from the fact that Kocjan just couldn't keep up with the best sprinters on the final little climb. Also, had he won the second intermediate sprint aswell, he would have been on the podium. Nevertheless, fourth in such a tight race has to be seen as a great result after the first two stages. Now we head off to Italy for the Giro dell'Appennino and Spain for the Vuelta a Castilla y Leon.

The next WorldTour race is the Tour of the Basque Country, where, of course, Euskaltel always hope to achieve the victory. All of the stages contain a lot of climbing, even the time trial. The winner was therefore always going to be a strong puncher with attacking instinct and a useful time trial. It was Valverde in the end, proving that he is definitely back, by beating Samu Sanchez by just ten seconds!

@baggieboys, I think the earlier efforts had taken too much out of him when it came to the final sprint to be honest Embarassed, but hey he gained 12 seconds which is like finishing second. Not bad at all. Smile

The third monument of the season, the "Hell of the North" is the final cobbled classic of the year, and, arguably, the biggest one day race of the season. Over 250 kilometres of racing with 27 cobbled sections means that only the hardest men in the peloton will achieve success here. As with De Ronde seven days earlier, there was a lot of focus on Cancellara vs Boonen, but it was, again, a mismatch as Fabian rode to another one of his masterful solo victories. He beat the BMC duo of Hushovd and Ballan, whilst Boonen was outsprinted by Haussler in the velodrome to finish fifth again. Sad news though, that Juan Antonio Flecha, riding in his last Paris-Roubaix before retiring at the end of the season, crashed heavily and fractured his kneecap. Not the best way for a legend to bow out.

You'll have to wait a little while for any cobbles sutty.Pfft We have a few races before the Tro-Bro Léon, which should be our only race over cobbles this season.
You didn't think I was doing Paris-Roubaix did you?? I'd have to be mad or very cruel to take this team there!
