The World Championships should decide who's the best cyclist around. However, this year's Championships takes place on an hilly course in Firenze, Italy. It will be up and down all day and the cuorse suits Philippe well, according himself. He tested the course after the Giro and he says that the climb is to hard for the sprinters but to easy for the "mountain-guys".

Nevetheless, there is also an ITT World Chapionships. Luis Leon Sanchez have won it two times in a row now, will he takes his third win this year?

Geraint Thomas is the first rider from Rapha on the course. He is in great shape (~95pts) and does his best time trail ever when he finishes 5th, only 32 seconds behind todays winner and 14 seconds from the bronze.

img231.imageshack.us/img231/6808/pcm0108.jpg
Richie Porte is the second rider from Rapha who enters the course. He isn't in the same shape as Thomas but he rides fast anyway and takes the silver!

img708.imageshack.us/img708/1180/pcm0109.jpg
Bradley Wiggins season have been like a roller-coaster. He won the British Road Race, but he failed in the Olympics and the British Time Trail. It seems like he has lost his ability to time trail since he fails today as well. He is only 22nd.

img815.imageshack.us/img815/7417/pcm0110.jpg
Olympic Champion Luis Léon Sánchez is probably the best time trailist in the world at the moment and wins the World Championships as well. The legend who did the same in 2008, Fabian Cancellara, is 3rd.

img860.imageshack.us/img860/5894/pcm0112.jpg
As usual there is a break in this World Championship, and as always they also allowed a great gap before they are caught. Austrailia, Russia, Denmark and Portugal have one rider each in the break. Belgium works to catch them.

img855.imageshack.us/img855/4779/pcm0113.jpg
The break is caught but nobody attacks!? Cavendish and the rest of the Britain team are able to follow the bunch over the final climb, and with 6km to go we start the lead out. Kennaugh is in the front. Thomas is on his wheel and Cavendish is just behind them.

img827.imageshack.us/img827/5245/pcm0114.jpg
The sprint goes uphill Cauberg, and the hill is to steep for Cav. However, I am only happy about that fact, because it makes it possible for Geraint Thomas to take the win! And he does, he flies the last kms and will be riding in the rainbow jesey nexet season. Such a great revange for Britain after the fail at the Olympics.

UCI World Championships 2013, Individul Time-Trail

Firenze - Firenze 50km

img40.imageshack.us/img40/6070/pcm0003up.png

The time-trail in Firenze is plain and big, powerful guys like Cancellara and Martin should do weel here while it will be hard for smaller time-trailer like Contador. Howverver, In the end of the day the best time-trailer will be decided and we will recognize him in the rainbow shirt next season.

img638.imageshack.us/img638/5339/pcm0006d.jpg
Artem Ovechkin img801.imageshack.us/img801/9544/22400845.png is the first rider who enter the course today. He is also the first rider to finish with the time: 1h12'39

img853.imageshack.us/img853/273/pcm0007.jpg

Sébastien Rosseler img155.imageshack.us/img155/4414/24767415.png is the first belgian rider on the course an he is having an real stinker! His time is 1h14'22 and he is 62nd of 66 riders today...

img827.imageshack.us/img827/5299/pcm0008f.jpg

Marcel Sieberg img836.imageshack.us/img836/114/79372542.png is Omega Pharma's big hope and he is in good shape. He takes the lead at the first intermediate but his pace was maybe to hard...

img32.imageshack.us/img32/4065/pcm0009t.jpg

Maxime Monfort img155.imageshack.us/img155/4414/24767415.png is the next belgian on the course and just like Rossler, his shape isn't any good. He ends up as 45th, 3'08 minutes behind today's winner.

img21.imageshack.us/img21/1420/pcm0010k.jpg

Alberto Contador img839.imageshack.us/img839/535/75794837.png is one of the first favourites on the course bu it looks like he has left hs shape at home, or is the italian meat? I don't know but something I know for sure is that Alberto ends up as 19th today on the time 1h11'58.

img11.imageshack.us/img11/8416/pcm0011n.jpg

Marcel Sieberg img836.imageshack.us/img836/114/79372542.png reaches the finish on a time of 1h11'20. The time is not enough for an top-10 but still, he is 13th and that's an good results for Sieberg!

img638.imageshack.us/img638/6391/pcm0014c.jpg

Chris Froome img171.imageshack.us/img171/4428/73601487.png is the best Brit today, finishing 5th. The other brit, Bradley Wiggins, is 27th.

img850.imageshack.us/img850/2011/pcm0015i.jpg

Gustav Erik Larsson img824.imageshack.us/img824/3944/36701971.gif is 1st at the 2nd intermediate when every rider have passed. Will somebody be able to beat Gustav today?

img812.imageshack.us/img812/3165/pcm0017i.jpg

The answer is: No. Gustav Erik Larsson img824.imageshack.us/img824/3944/36701971.gif is catching Wiggins in the final meters an takes the win on the time: 1h10'14. It's an very suprising podium this year as Benjamin Jaques- Maynes img41.imageshack.us/img41/6503/27361852.png is 2nd and Vladimir Karpets img801.imageshack.us/img801/9544/22400845.png 3rd!

img96.imageshack.us/img96/9798/pcm0018f.jpg

On a day full of dissapointment, Dominique Cornu img155.imageshack.us/img155/4414/24767415.png finishes as 20th. He is 1'46 behind today's winner, Gutav Erik Larsson from Sweden.

img841.imageshack.us/img841/1450/pcm0019s.jpg
Gustav Larsson wins the World ITT Championships 2013!

UCI World Championships 2013, Roas Race

Firenze - Firenze 257km

img146.imageshack.us/img146/8321/pcm0003x.png
The course suits Philippe and Philippe is in shape. Let's do this race!

img844.imageshack.us/img844/9830/pcm0006o.jpg
The race is off in an cloudy Firenze and it's rain in the air. This will be an epic World Championships for sure, but who will win? Philippe is one of the favourites bur Sagan, Valverde, Cunego, Hesjedal, Gavazzi, Voeckler and many other riders will challange him.

img225.imageshack.us/img225/9263/pcm0007n.jpg
Thor Hushovd (Norway) is the first rider to attack. He has just signed for Rapha - Focus and next year we will see him work for Cavendish.

img841.imageshack.us/img841/522/pcm0008.jpg
Hushovd is brought back by the bunch and there is new attacks! One of the riders who attacks is Benjamin Jaques-Maynes (USA). We know that Benjamin is in shape, he was 2nd in the ITT a few days ago.

img269.imageshack.us/img269/2757/pcm0011zj.jpg
Finally, the break is created and given an gap! There is 10 rides in the break. 2 of them are danish but there is no Belgian rider in the break.

img5.imageshack.us/img5/5531/pcm0012m.jpg
After the three hills in the begining of the race, Philippe looks relaxed. Will it be his day today? We all know that he is in shape after his Vuelta.

img819.imageshack.us/img819/8662/pcm0013h.jpg
The breakaway enter the course in Firenze.

img9.imageshack.us/img9/7790/pcm0014u.jpg
It looks like Spain is the team with most interest to catch the break because they works without any help from Italy or Belgium.

img706.imageshack.us/img706/6100/pcm0016t.jpg
The break passes the finish line with an gap of 2'23 minutes. It's an tiny gap, will they be caught with 140kms to go?

img717.imageshack.us/img717/8704/pcm0017y.jpg
Rigberto Uran (Columbia) attacks and joins the break. The gap is still very small, around 2 minutes, but it begins to grow again when Uran joins.

img683.imageshack.us/img683/1404/pcm0018.jpg
Rory Sutherland (Australia) and Vladimir Karpets (Russia) does like Uran. They attacks and joins the break.

img695.imageshack.us/img695/2661/pcm0021h.jpg
It's 100kms to go! The gap between the bunch and the break is 4 minutes and several riders is struggling because og the distance and the hilly course.

img35.imageshack.us/img35/9623/pcm0023u.jpg
Johan van Summeren is is down to get some water and food for Philippe. It looks like the Belgian team works for him today. However, they miss Jan Bakelandts for sure. Bakelandts was injured during Tour of Polonge and missed the WC.

img718.imageshack.us/img718/8785/pcm0024e.jpg
The breakaway is splitted and only three of the riders from the first break manges to stay with Uran, Karpets and Sutherland.

img405.imageshack.us/img405/2254/pcm0025w.jpg
"Gli Azurri", or Italy, is up in the front and the pace becomes much faster. If your struggling now, your out of this competition. Luckly, Philippe follows without any troubles.

img15.imageshack.us/img15/4044/pcm0026j.jpg
Karpets, Sutherland and Uran are now together in the front. All the other riders from the first break has dropped by now.

img846.imageshack.us/img846/3506/pcm0028j.jpg
There is an splitted bunch behind with ~25 riders. Italy, Belgium and Spain looks strong as always!

img155.imageshack.us/img155/299/pcm0029.jpg
Vladimir Karpets showed his shape on the time-trail by taking the bronze and now he shows it again! He is the strongest in the break and after the climb, he is alone.

img34.imageshack.us/img34/9089/pcm0030.jpg
Ryder Hesjedal (Canada) makes an effort in the hill and only the strongest climbers are able to follow! Valverde and Cunego is right behind him, and Philippe of course!

img809.imageshack.us/img809/5114/pcm0031p.jpg
Thomas Voeckler reaches the group with the favourites in the downhill selection.

img94.imageshack.us/img94/8072/pcm0032.jpg
However, the favourites think it's to early so a couple of riders comes back, one of them are Peter Sagan and when the group enters the climb with 2 laps to go he attacks. Alejandro Valverde (HTC) follows him and they are given an small gap. Philippe makes an smart move and waits until the downhill selction to catch them.

img148.imageshack.us/img148/8195/pcm0033.jpg
Philippe reaches Valverde and Sagan with ease and makes an small attack in the other short, but steep, hill. It's an small attck but it's enough to gain an small gap.

img34.imageshack.us/img34/2358/pcm0034.jpg
1 lap to go of the World Chapionships. Alejandro Valverde (Spain) and Philippe Gilbert (Belgium) is together in the lead. Theese two have been fighting alot this year, for example at Liége-Bastogne-Liége and about the points jersey on the Vuelta. Valverde have been the winner both of times.

img823.imageshack.us/img823/6762/pcm0035.jpg
Philippe and Valverde will climb this climb for the last time today. Philippe must attack, because if he reaches the sprint with Valverde, he will probably be beaten.

img651.imageshack.us/img651/7259/pcm0036.jpg
Philippe waits unil the top of the climb to launch his attack but when he attacks, he is given an gap. It's not big but it could be enough after 250kms!

img269.imageshack.us/img269/7631/pcm0037e.jpg
However, it's not enough Valverde is catching Philippe and then he attcks in the dowhill? I wonder what ValvPiti have eaten to breakfast?

img839.imageshack.us/img839/6710/pcm0038.jpg
Philippe refuse to give in and he reaches Valverde in the short, but steep, hill I talked about before. It will be an sprint between theese guys!

img853.imageshack.us/img853/8564/pcm0039s.jpg
Who will win? Philippe Gilbert or Alejandro Valverde? The good or the bad?

img707.imageshack.us/img707/9137/pcm0040.jpg
Philippe waits and waits to luch his sprint until 1.2 kms to go. He launches the sprint and so does Valverde! Is it mine eye or is Valverde dropping a few centimeters?

img841.imageshack.us/img841/1600/pcm0041.jpg
No he don't, because he is playing with Philippe and takes an easy victory. Oh my god, Valverde takes the rainbow jersey from Philippe in the final meters of this race. Poor, Philippe he deserved the victory.

img705.imageshack.us/img705/8313/pcm0042.jpg
Alejandro Vlverde wins the World RR Championships 2013!

Comment: You all knew that Valverde and Philippe would fight about this! Impressive, but none of you could anticipate the suprising results in the time-trail and that Cornu had 65 fitness pts. However, congrats tsmoha, "betting world champion"!

Awesome report, hopefully I can do half that well in my reports with David.

Also its pretty cool seeing Hesjedal finishing 5th at the World Championships.

Great report! Good result by Gilbert. Also good result by Kreder and Voeckler.

Damn Sagan, I could've guessed the podium. Grin

Nice reports, pity Gilbert didn't win, though.

Banana Betting World champion sounds good Smile Great battle between Philippe and Alejandro, unlucky end for you. Great previews, reports as always! Though Philippe didn't achieve all his goals, he had an awesome season!

@ valverde321: Thank you. Hesjedal is one of the best climbers in this savegame, thanks to the random potential. I signed him in Rapha last season before I decided to change team to Omega Pharma and write about Gilbert.

@ cuxu: It's nice to see that all of you like my reports Smile Voeckler was an real suprise indeed.

@FreitasPCM: Better luck for Sagan and you next year Grin

@tsmoha: The season isn't over, yet Wink
