Saur - Sojasun
Tuco the Ugly
Skoda-Tour de Luxembourg: Stage 3: Schifflange - Differdange: 204.1km

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Saur-Sojasun/418.jpg

A much harder day was in store for the peloton. The main feature of the day will be the Col de l'Europe, which will be climbed 3 times at the end of the stage. The steep hill will separate the contenders.

Naturally, a group of riders tried to get away early. Borut Božic (Vacansoleil), Bjorn De Decker (Jong Vlaanderen - Bauknecht), Kevin Hulsmans (Quick·Step), David Deroo (Skil - Shimano), Stijn Minne (An Post - Sean Kelly), Sjef De Wilde (Verandas Willems), Chase Pinkham (Trek Livestrong U23), Bert Scheirlinckx (Landbouwkrediet), and Morris Possoni (Sky), were the ones to make the move.

The break travels up Napoléonsgaard, the first climb on the day.

The breakaway had a lead of 7'40" as the passed through the commune of Bigonville.

They worked well together, but inevitably, would not make it to the end.

Team Katusha, or more namely, Alexandr Kolobnev began working on the front.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Saur-Sojasun/420.jpg
Kolobnev sat on the front and blew up the field.

Kolobnev just sat on the front and kept the pace very high. Very quickly, the field began to thin. Most of Saur - Sojasun went out the back. This included Jérôme Coppel. Coppel has had a very uneven season, which earlier this week, the team manager took responsibility for.

Only Jérémie Galland and Sébastien Joly stayed with the main group, and just barely.

Over the first two ascents of the Col de l'Europe, Kolobnev worked. His strength was very impressive, and soon, the lead group shrank to 11. Galland and Joly would not make the grade.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Saur-Sojasun/421.jpg
Galland and Joly lose contact with the lead group.

There would be no attacks from the lead group, which contained GC leader Romain Feillu, who was showing impressive form in this type of terrain. Normally, his brother Brice is more noted for his climbing ability. The 11 leaders seemed content to ride to the finish line together at the same time.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Saur-Sojasun/422.jpg
The lead group descends into the finish.

In such a group, Feillu looked certain to take his second stage. However, it would be the young German Paul Martens who had enough strength and quickness to take the win, and the overall race lead.

Martens edges out Ivanov for the stage and race lead.

Skoda-Tour de Luxembourg: Stage 4: Eschweiler - Diekirch: 189.9km

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Saur-Sojasun/424.jpg

Another hard day was in store for the peloton in the hills of Luxembourg. After climbing the Col de l'Europe yesterday, the Broderbourg will be the main feature today. 3km's at 5.2% will test weary legs.

Saur - Sojasun tried to be active today, sending Jonathan Hivert in the break. Being nearly 6 minutes down on leader Paul Martens, the team was hoping the peloton may let the break go. Others with similar thinking were Marcel Wyss (Cervélo Test Team), Glenn D'Hollander (Omega Pharma - Lotto), Danilo Napolitano (Team Katusha), Davide Viganò (Sky), Joost Van Leijen (Vacansoleil), and Cyrille Heymans (Continental Team Differdange).

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Saur-Sojasun/425.jpg
The break working hard.

The break had a good lead halfway through the stage after summiting the Knaphoscheid. They were 7'39" ahead of the main field.

At this point, Hivert began to work harder. Most of his breakaway companions didn't have the same pedigree, and he worked to drop them.

On the first ascent of the Broderbourg, Hivert climbed away from the breakaway with Wyss and D'Hollander. However, the peloton was closing fast and was only 2'30" behind the three leaders.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Saur-Sojasun/426.jpg
Hivert, Wyss, and D'Hollander climb away.

With the peloton moving quickly, the numbers in the main field had greatly reduced. Once again, Saur - Sojasun was suffering. Only Sébastien Joly was in the main field. Jérôme Coppel once again had an off day, and Jérémie Galland didn't recover well from the day before.

In the peloton, it was once again Alexandr Kolobnev and Team Katusha doing the pace making. And once again, they were working for the ultra-aggressive Sergueï Ivanov. On the second ascent of the Broderbourg, Ivanov attacked.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Saur-Sojasun/427.jpg
Ivanov, who has been very active all race, launches an attack.

Ivanov dropped Romain Feillu (Vacansoleil) who made a half-hearted attempt to follow him.

Up ahead, Hivert and his two companions continued to push on, but they were losing steam. The three leaders on the road were tired. As they began climbing the Broderbourg the last time, Ivanov was upon them. A minute behind them, was the peloton.

On the final climb, Ivanov would drop Hivert, Wyss, and D'Hollander.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Saur-Sojasun/428.jpg
Hivert and his companions try, but fail to keep up with the strong Russian.

Ivanov was again strong in the final descent and run-in to the finish line. But once again, like in Stage 2, Ivanov could not make it to the line first. As he went under the flamme rouge, he would be caught by the lead field.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Saur-Sojasun/429.jpg
Ivanov is caught just like in Stage 2.

While it was clear that Ivanov was disheartened by the events, there was still a kilometer to race. Once again, most looked to Feillu or Filippo Pozzato in the sprint. However, it was Sandy Casar who showed impressive grit by taking the win.

Martens finished 2nd, and with only one flat stage left, all but secured the overall race victory.

Casar takes the sprint victory after another tough day.

Tuco the Ugly
Skoda-Tour de Luxembourg: Stage 5: Mersch - Luxembourg: 150.4km

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Saur-Sojasun/431.jpg

The peloton would return to the capital city of Luxembourg over flat roads. After several days in the hills, the peloton would be able to relax somewhat.

Seven riders went on the attack today. No Saur - Sojasun riders made the move. However, the team did gain camera time by sitting on the front of the peloton, setting the pace for the day. The team wanted to deliver Jimmy Casper safely to the finish line.

The break of the day.

The day was going smoothly and the break was caught 14.2km from the line.

As the team's began to prepare their sprint trains, a crash happened in the back. While he was able to avoid serious injury, Jérôme Coppel went flying over the handlebars. A scary incident.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Saur-Sojasun/433.jpg
Somehow, Coppel avoided injury after being thrown from his bike.

Despite Coppel's crash, the team had to focus on setting up Casper. Saur had set up their small train on the left of the peloton with Stéphane Poulhiès on the front, followed by Jimmy Engoulvent, and then Casper.

The team moves up on the left.

After a good turn from Poulhiès, Engoulvent went to work when the sprint opened up. Engoulvent, whom led the team in May, did an excellent job returning to his normal duties of lead-out man. Rounding the final corner, Engoulvent had Casper in prime position, ahead of the field.

Hans Dekker (Landbouwkrediet) was on Casper's wheel.

Engoulvent and Casper round the final bend.

Casper showed no sign of rust in the final straight, out-dueling Wouter Weylandt. The Belgian had a strong initial burst, but did not have the staying power to match Casper.

Casper's victory saved what had been a lackluster race.

Casper continues his solid season with a win in Luxembourg.

Wow, that's one nasty crash. Good new that Coppel escaped uninjured.

Dominant victory with Casper, apart from Weylant nobody else got close.

roturn
Great win with Casper. No chance for anybody else.
Also Coppel`s crash looks really painful Wink

Hope everyone had a great Holidays.

Sorry the updating has been slow and irregular the past two months. As the new year comes around, I should have more time. I'm hoping to get some Tour de Suisse updates up tonight.

Take your time if there are more important things Wink
But nice to know that you continue as this is one of my favourite stories.

Tour de Suisse

For many, the Tour de Suisse is simply seen as the last chance to train before Le Tour de France in July. This is further seen by the start list, which is chalk full of riders who will be gunning for the maillot jaune next month. From Lance Armstrong to Dennis Menchov, from Fränk Schleck to Roman Kreuziger, the race will not be lacking big names. Defending champion Fabian Cancellara is back, although has previously stated he will be working for team leader Schleck.

For Saur - Sojasun, who were recently denied entry into the TdF, the Tour de Suisse will somewhat substitute, and become the team's biggest stage race of the season. The team will be sending 8 of 9 riders who would've gone to France. With the likes of Jimmy Casper and Jimmy Engoulvent for the flat stages, and Jérôme Coppel and Sébastien Joly for hilly/mountainous ones, the team is hoping to come away from the race with a stage victory.

Stage 1: Lugano: 7.0km

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Saur-Sojasun/437.jpg

The first stage would be a hilly prologue. The odds-makers were making Fabian Cancellara the overwhelming favorite on his home turf.

Saur - Sojasun had a bad day once again. However, Coppel made a decent ride finishing in 34th. After the team's plans changed earlier this month, Coppel's fitness program changed and he's only rolling into shape. Engoulvent was the only other rider of note, finishing 44th.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Saur-Sojasun/438.jpg
Coppel has the best day for Saur - Sojasun, finishing 34th.

Belgian Philippe Gilbert is showing he will be one to contest for stage victories with an impressive ride. Powering himself over the hill, he would finish the day in 2nd.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Saur-Sojasun/439.jpg
Gilbert continues a good season, finishing with a time of 12'23.

When the reigning world time trial champion took to the course, he looked a little ragged. Since his successful spring campaign, Cancellara has been resting and it clearly showed today. Even still, Spartacus would take 7th overall. Impressive considering his lack of form.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Saur-Sojasun/440.jpg
Cancellara "struggled" finishing 7th.

The winner would be young German Paul Martens. One of the first riders on the course today, Martens benefited from a nice tailwind to take the stage.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Saur-Sojasun/441.jpg
Martens descends to a well deserved victory.

Happy new year to everyone!

Tour de Suisse: Stage 2: Ascona - Sierre: 161.0km

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Saur-Sojasun/442.jpg

The race organizers have classified today's stage as flat, however, considering the route will take them up the imposing Simplon Pass, some may question this decision. Only after the ascent will the riders be able to enjoy the flat ride into Sierre.

Saur - Sojasun will be hoping Jimmy Casper can make it over the climb with the peloton.

Knowing it would be hard to keep Casper up front, the team decided to not put any riders in the break. They wanted to use all their resources to try and help Casper over the climb.

A break of 12 would form on the foothills of the Simplon Pass. It would contain Fabio Felline (Footon - Servetto), Rafael Valls (Footon - Servetto), Nick Nuyens (Rabobank), Andreas Klier (Cervélo Test Team), Greg Van Avermaet (Omega Pharma - Lotto), Lars Bak (Team HTC - Columbia), Ruggero Marzoli (Acqua & Sapone), Björn Leukemans (Vacansoleil Pro Cycling Team), Fabio Sabatini (Liquigas - Doimo), Pablo Urtasun (Euskaltel - Euskadi), Gatis Smukulis (AG2R La Mondiale), and Jérôme Pinea (Quick·Step).

The break begins the arduous climb.

Saur - Sojasun went to the front of the group on the climb. Not because they were worried about the break, but because they wanted to set a tempo that Casper could follow. The peloton was fine with this for several kilometers, when Team RadioShack moved to the front and upped the pace.

Many riders immediately went into difficutly, with Casper being no exception. Despite Jérémie Galland's best efforts, Casper went out the back.

A couple kilometers later, the other Saur sprint hope would follow suit, as Jimmy Engoulvent also was dropped before the summit.

Casper, the two-time winner of the "laterne rouge" flashes his credentials.

As the break reached the top, it too had shrunk in size as Sabatini and Urtasun could not keep up with the pace. At the high point for the day, the break had a 6'15 advantage.

The beautiful Swiss Alps.

After the major climb of the day, the stage did begin to play out like a sprint stage. The peloton slowly worked to reel in the break away, which fought valiantly, but would ultimately be caught with 4.6km left on the day.

With no Saur rider having a chance to win, the team was just happy its main leaders didn't lose anytime.

As the sprint opened up Nuyens was still going strong, having kept up with the leaders after the break was caught. However, right behind him were riders with a better finishing pedigree. Matti Breschel, Romain Feillu, and Francesco Ginanni were all posed to pounce.

The riders head into the line.

However, on a day when a sprint stage featured a big climb, it was fitting that an Euskaltel rider would win. So often, their orange jerseys are in the thick of action in the mountains. Aitor Galdos put forth a tremendous effort in the final straight to hold off the field and take the win.

Paul Martens continues his fantastic form and finished in 7th, retaining the leader's jersey.

Galdos completes a great ride.
