Subida Urkiola
After spending 10 days in Egypt I had to continue my cycling job. As I have only one goal left for this season - to win Tour of Sochi, which will be held in September, I begun preparations to this by taking part in Spanish mountain one-day race Subida Urkiola.
Our tactics was to have somebody in front all the way. So, Mate, Ochoa, Rodriguez were in all breakaways today. But not a breakaway had won the race.
It all decided on last mountain. Oleg Chuzhda was the first to attack and after him it were many others. Me and Michele Scarponi were leaders of Androni and we both tried to hold on these attacks. In the end it was group of four riders, two of them was Centro de Loule team. I also was there and.
Zaballa moved forward and had few meters of advantage when I started my sprint. On finish line we were already together, side by side.
But we didn't need photo-finish. Constantino was a little bit in front of me when we crossed finish line.
Would finish few meters far from us, it could be me... But I am not disappointed. I see that my strength is there and I looking forward to Russian race.

First stage. Krasnodar
My last season goal race was started with 19km ITT stage in Krasnodar city.
I came here with not good feelings. My fitness isn't good, I think it's around 70-72 percent of my Giro fitness, so I guess, it won't be easy to win here, but my shape is growing, so I hope it will improve till the mountains.
Anyway, first stage didn't give me nice results. I was only 27th with 1'16 lag after stage winner, Giovanni Visconti.
Stage results:
1 | Giovanni Visconti | ISD - Neri | 27'35 | 2 | Phil Zajicek | Fly V Australia | + 28 | 3 | Tom Veelers | Skil - Shimano | s.t. | 4 | Tim Johnson | UnitedHealthcare presented by Maxxis | + 39 | 5 | Constantino Zaballa | Centro Ciclismo de Loulé - Louletano | + 40 | 6 | Rubens Bertogliati | Androni Giocattoli | + 44 | 7 | Sergei Firsanov | Team Designa Køkken - Blue Water | + 45 | 8 | Leonardo Bertagnolli | Androni Giocattoli | + 48 | 9 | Coen Vermeltfoort | Rabobank CT | + 49 | 10 | Albert Timmer | Skil - Shimano | + 52 |
Second stage. Krasnodar - Nebug
First half of the race is flat. But when we will came to Sochi - it will be tough mountains, especially last stage, ITT to Krasnaya Polyana. So, I had to make some trainings while racing to get into top form. That's why I decided to help our sprinter, Alberto Loddo today.
Alberto wasn't too fast this year, he only had won few stages in Malaysia season opener and nothing more, that's why his contract wasn't resigned and he is leaving us. But for the end he seems to want to shut the door.
Alberto was very good today. At the end he set on my wheel and I was already on wheel of new Swiss champion, Bertogliati. Rubens begun his sprint very early and we had big advantage. So big advantage, so even after I did my job and just rolled to finish, nobody could catch me and I finished second today! So, today's victory I think, is Bertogliati's victory more than Loddo's.
Stage results:
1 | Alberto Loddo | Androni Giocattoli | 3h53'52 | 2 | Max Belaschov | Androni Giocattoli | s.t. | 3 | Aurélien Passeron | Meridiana Kamen Team | s.t. | 4 | Tom Veelers | Skil - Shimano | s.t. | 5 | Luca Celli | Ceramica Flaminia | s.t. | 6 | Leonardo Bertagnolli | Androni Giocattoli | s.t. | 7 | Stefan Radochla | Team Nutrixxion Sparkasse | s.t. | 8 | Davide Frattini | Team Type 1 | s.t. | 9 | Albert Timmer | Skil - Shimano | s.t. | 10 | Krzysztof Jezowski | CCC Polsat Polkowice | s.t. |
GC after two stages:
1 | Giovanni Visconti | ISD - Neri | 4h21'27 | 2 | Tom Veelers | Skil - Shimano | + 28 | 3 | Tim Johnson | UnitedHealthcare presented by Maxxis | + 39 | 4 | Constantino Zaballa | Centro Ciclismo de Loulé - Louletano | + 40 | 5 | Rubens Bertogliati | Androni Giocattoli | + 44 | 6 | Sergei Firsanov | Team Designa Køkken - Blue Water | + 45 | 7 | Leonardo Bertagnolli | Androni Giocattoli | + 48 | 8 | Coen Vermeltfoort | Rabobank CT | + 49 | 9 | Albert Timmer | Skil - Shimano | + 52 | 10 | Tomasz Kiendys | CCC Polsat Polkowice | + 54 |

Third stage. Tuapse - Dagomys
I don't know, but if race organizers wanted Russian rider to win a stage in this year's GP Sochi, they made fantastic work for it! Today's stage was the one I liked very much. I love stages with tough relief and with flat finish. I am very good on that stages. So I really wanted to win today and I had everything for that.
But the races didn't went on my scenario today. First of all, race leader, Visconti, attacked on penultimate mountain. He was very good today, but as it already few times, I didn't recognize his attack and on last climb he had two minutes of advantage.
In the other hand, nobody moved forward while I was in the group. So, I had ti attack myself. I did it on last climb and few guys set on my wheel. We worked well together and on mountain top we (me, Maschiarelli and Pires) were just in one minute after Giovanni. But it still wasn't enough, so we had to take risk on downhill.
But race and stage leader also risked and we had advantage only because it was 3 of us versus him. So, we finally catched him with only 0.5 km to finish. Maschiarelli rolled back that time and with only two rivals I had the best chances to win today. And I did it.
Moreover, tomorrow I will wear Points' jersey. I want to thank all my team mates, this victory means really much for me.
Stage results:
1 | Max Belaschov | Androni Giocattoli | 4h13'26 | 2 | Bruno Pires | Barbot - Siper | s.t. | 3 | Giovanni Visconti | ISD - Neri | s.t. | 4 | Francesco Masciarelli | Acqua & Sapone | + 20 | 5 | Eddy Ratti | De Rosa - Stac Plastic | + 40 | 6 | Mitja Mahoric | Adria Mobil | + 1'04 | 7 | Constantino Zaballa | Centro Ciclismo de Loulé - Louletano | s.t. | 8 | Leonardo Bertagnolli | Androni Giocattoli | s.t. | 9 | Sergei Firsanov | Team Designa Køkken - Blue Water | + 1'36 | 10 | Carlos José Ochoa | Androni Giocattoli | + 1'47 |
GC:
1 | Giovanni Visconti | ISD - Neri | 8h34'49 | 2 | Bruno Pires | Barbot - Siper | + 1'00 | 3 | Max Belaschov | Androni Giocattoli | + 1'04 | 4 | Constantino Zaballa | Centro Ciclismo de Loulé - Louletano | + 1'48 | 5 | Francesco Masciarelli | Acqua & Sapone | + 1'52 | 6 | Leonardo Bertagnolli | Androni Giocattoli | + 1'56 | 7 | Eddy Ratti | De Rosa - Stac Plastic | + 1'57 | 8 | Mitja Mahoric | Adria Mobil | + 2'21 | 9 | Sergei Firsanov | Team Designa Køkken - Blue Water | + 2'25 | 10 | Carlos José Ochoa | Androni Giocattoli | + 3'24 |

Fourth stage. Sochi criterium
It was flat stage, 15 laps in Sochi downtown. Nobody thought that this stage could make changes in GC...
But when we begun penultimate lap, there was a crash in middle of peloton. Sadly, but Alberto Loddo was the one who fell down. More that sadly, but he not only fell down, but also he had broke his arm and now his season is over. Relationship with Androni Giocattoli for him ended not with smile...
Loddo wasn't the only loss of peloton in that crash. Race leader, Giovanni Visconti also met ground and despite of being able to continue the race, he have lost two and a half minutes and now we have new race leader - Bruno Pires. Only 4 seconds is my lag from him.
Now it's time to think about tactics. Wouldn't Visconti fell, it was clear - I just had to stay with him tomorrow and maybe attack in penultimate day. But now it's different. First of all, we have less differences between riders in GC, so we can be sure that somebody will attack tomorrow. So, I will have to react. And as Pires isn't so good climber, there is possibility that I will be race leader after tomorrow stage.
But with not very strong team, I could be not able to control the race. Moreover, now I have only 4 domestiques, after Loddo's withdrawal. So... well, we will see tomorrow.
Ah! Forgot to say about stage winner. It was Coen Vermeltfoort, Rabobank CT sprinter.
Stage results:
1 | Coen Vermeltfoort | Rabobank CT | 2h36'36 | 2 | Aurélien Passeron | Meridiana Kamen Team | s.t. | 3 | Sérgio Ribeiro | Barbot - Siper | s.t. | 4 | Javier MegÃas | Team Type 1 | s.t. | 5 | Reinier Honig | Acqua & Sapone | s.t. | 6 | Bert Scheirlinckx | Landbouwkrediet | s.t. | 7 | Roberto Ferrari | De Rosa - Stac Plastic | s.t. | 8 | Rubens Bertogliati | Androni Giocattoli | s.t. | 9 | Tomasz Kiendyś | CCC Polsat Polkowice | s.t. | 10 | Krzysztof Jeżowski | CCC Polsat Polkowice | s.t. |
GC:
1 | Bruno Pires | Barbot - Siper | 11h12'25 | 2 | Max Belaschov | Androni Giocattoli | + 4 | 3 | Constantino Zaballa | Centro Ciclismo de Loulé - Louletano | + 48 | 4 | Francesco Masciarelli | Acqua & Sapone | + 52 | 5 | Leonardo Bertagnolli | Androni Giocattoli | + 56 | 6 | Eddy Ratti | De Rosa - Stac Plastic | + 57 | 7 | Mitja Mahoric | Adria Mobil | + 1'21 | 8 | Sergei Firsanov | Team Designa Køkken - Blue Water | + 1'25 | 9 | Giovanni Visconti | ISD - Neri | + 1'42 | 10 | Carlos José Ochoa | Androni Giocattoli | + 2'24 |
