Petronas - Monster Energy; The end of an era

About the tactics, do you think that it will work in races like Gent-Wevelgem, Ronde or Roubaix? I mean, send a rider with 78 cobble's with the breakaway and let your captain stay in the peleton? Perhaps it works with a puncheur in M-S...

Don't think so, it has only worked for me in this race/route. And when you send a rider with Co 78 in the breakaway in RVV or PR, I think the other teams will chase him immediately.

IN stage 6 the Vuelta really starts. 213 kilometres between Cuenca and the Estación Esquí Aramón Valdelinares. And the name Estación Esquí says it all: skistation! The route has a mountainius last part with first the summit of the Alto de San Rafael (11.2km at 4.2%) 13 kilometres before the finish, and the last 7.6 kilometres to Aramón Valdelinares with an average gradient of 7.3%. The finish lies at an altitude of 1971 metres above sea level, but somehow, it's called a hilly stage....

185km to go
As always in stage like this one, an early breakaway is formed. But after the first Intermediate sprint, where Theo Bos wins the sprints, and takes 6 points.
If people were doubting if André Greipel would be the main sprinter in the Sony Ericsson team, or he would be the lead out for EBH, they've got the answer now. Because Greipel is the first at the first KOTM-sprint of the day, the Alto de la Ciudad Encantada. He is joined by Yukiya Arashiro (Europcar), Maryan Hary (Cofidis) and Zdenek Stybar (Omega Pharma). At 1'27 follows a small group with Maxime Bouet (AG2R), Francesco Gavazzi (Lampre), Manuel Quinziato (BMC), Rodrigo García (Radio Shack), Luis Pasamontes (Movistar), Joost van Leijen (Vacansoleil) and Jurgen Roelandts (Lotto). The peloton follows at 2'31.
img210.imageshack.us/img210/1095/1185km.jpg

147km to go
Reachinig the 2nd KOTM-sprint of the day, at the Puerto El Cubillo (5.8km at 6.4%), the situation has changed a bit. Arashiro is the first at the summit, leading a group with Bouet, Stybar, García, Van Leijen, Quinziato and Hary. The peloton follows at 2'18.
img593.imageshack.us/img593/5480/2147km.jpg

45km to go
Between kilometre 147 and 60, our domestiques make the pace in the peloton, so the margin of the leading group to the peloton has never become bigger than 3'30. Then Euskaltel (for Igor Antón) and Lotto (for Philippe Gilbert) take over, and with 45km to go, the peloton is only 1'40 behind the BOTD.
img823.imageshack.us/img823/5995/345km.jpg

19km to go
Already early in the ascend of the Alto de San Rafael (11.2km at 4.2%), the BOTD gets caught. Halfway up the climb, Philippe Gilbert is the first to attack. As we don't see him as a threat in the GC, we let him go and continue in our own pace.
img442.imageshack.us/img442/2712/419km.jpg

13km to go
Gilbert arrives at the summit with a margin of 44 seconds to a chasing group consisiting of 24 riders. The pace of the group is done by Nicholas Roche, Alexandre Vinokourov and Joaquím Rodríguez. Also Euskaltel, with 4 riders, and Radio Shack, with 3 riders, help chasing back Gilbert.
Unfortunately, Andy Schleck is the only rider from our team present, as Jelle Vanendert & Francis De Greef gotblocked in the climb and are almost a minute behind this group. Only a short descend of 5km and the final climb remaining.
img69.imageshack.us/img69/7756/513km.jpg

5km to go
With a little over 5 kilometres to go, Gilbert is still in the lead. Alexandre Vinokourov is the first to attack out of the chasing group and follows at '10. José Serpa (Androni) and Joaquim Rodríguez follow at '35 and the group Antón-Schleck-Schleck follows at '51.
img840.imageshack.us/img840/5328/65km.jpg

3km to go
This is the sign for several (counter-)attacks. First, Igor Antón follows Rodríguez, blasts over him, but gets countered by the Schleck-brothers. Then, with 3 kilometres Fränk Schleck attacks, immediately followd by his younger brother. They're '24 behind Gilbert.
img268.imageshack.us/img268/4493/73km.jpg

2km to go
But Fränk can't close the gap to Gilbert and the pace drops. Antón comes back, and immediately attacks again. He's able to close the gap to Antón. So with 2km to go, we have Antón, Gilbert and Andy Schleck in the lead. Fränk Schleck follows at '14 and a group with Rodríguez, Roche, Vinokourov and Serpa at '35 and Vanendert, who is showing an impressive remonte, at '45.
img535.imageshack.us/img535/13/82km.jpg

1km to go
Gilbert tries to make it a long sprint and starts it with over one km to go. Andy Schleck can easily follow him, but Antón has to let the 2 go and follows at '12. Fränk Scheck is 16 seconds further down the road.
img805.imageshack.us/img805/3887/91km.jpg

Finish
Gilbert has wasted too much energy with his early attack and doesn't stand a chance against Schleck in the sprint. It's win number 9 this season for Andy, and he also takes the lead in the GC. Antón follows at '28, brother Fränk at '50, Rodríguez, Vanendert, who regained a lot of places, Vinokourov and Roche at 1'20, Serpa at 1'40 and Sella and Sánchez at 2'08.

Word from the DS
This was great tactical racing by Andy Schleck. He had his nerves under control, and didn't waste energy with fruitless attacks, but giving it all in the sprint to the finish. But I wonder, what Gilbert could have done without that early attack and wasting that energy....
Nevertheless, we're in the lead and now have to take control of this Vuelta!

Great stage win today for Andy Schleck, especially to see him out-power Gilbert as well, Well Done Smile

The race starts in the mountains and has the highest altitude at 1702metres above sea level. After that follows a long descend to finish in Vinarós, located near the sea.

153km to go
We send a rider in tpday's breakaway, so we don't have to work in the chase. Sounds like a good plan! And Jack Bobridge is the lucky guy. Together with Simon Clarke (Qantas), Steve Houanard (AG2R), Dimitriy Muravyev (Astana), Santo Anza (Vacansoleil) and David Veilleux (Europcar), he has a margin of 7 minutes to the peloton, when they reach today's highest point, the Puerto de Villaroya.
img845.imageshack.us/img845/3412/1153km.jpg

21km to go
The margin increases to a maximum of 10 minutes, before the domestiques of Garmin and Sky start to chase. With about 30km to go, the margin has decreased to 2 minutes, but suddenly the sprinter teams stop the chase. Why? Nobody will ever know...
When the 6 leaders have reached the sea and start to ride along the Costa Brava, they have a lead of 4'43.
img20.imageshack.us/img20/1025/221km.jpg

1km to go
No attacks in the following kilometres, so the stage will be decided in a sprint of 6. Exiting the last with 1km to go, Veilleux and Houanard are in the lead, with Bobridge in 3rd place.
img88.imageshack.us/img88/6862/31km.jpg

Finish
Houanard passes Veilleux and easily wins the sprint, taking his first win of the season and the biggest in his career. Bobridge manages to hold on to the 3rd place, what is an excellent result!
Boasson hagen wins the sprint for the 7th place, finishing 7'08 behind the leading group! There are no changes in the GC, positive thing is that we have extended the lead in the teams ranking.

Nice ride by Bobridge. None of the riders in the leading excellend in sprinting, so it was up to the guy with the most energy left, and that was Houanard.
Tomorrow is another flat stage, and the day after the ITT.

Another flat stage, and another stage we'll try to prevent a mass sprint (remember our sponsor goal, wearing the points jersey!).

img7.imageshack.us/img7/5923/vinaros.jpg

Finish
As I didn't feel like taking screenshots this stage, I'll tell you what happened in this stage.
First a breakaway got away, with only 80m to go. No big names in it (maybe JJ Haedo). When we entered the streets of Lloret De Mar for the first time (of two), there were numerous attacks by several puncheurs like Vinokourov, Rodríguez, Serpa and eventually Philippe Gilbert. And it was Gilbert who could get a gap to the peloton and win the stage in an uphill sprint. Vino got second, José Cobo third and the peloton finished at 37 seconds. Most important victim of all these attacks was Luis León Sánchez, who somehow managed to loose 4 minutes today! Andy Schleck managed to finish in front of Boasson Hagen, and together with some bonus seconds, he overtook the points jersey (and we have achieved our sponsor goal Smile )

The 2nd decisive stage in this Vuelta is the 46.3 kilomtre Individual Time Trial with start and finish in Lloret De Mar. The most difficult part of the route is the short but speed climb of the Alto de Tossa.
img27.imageshack.us/img27/562/perfil09.jpg
img822.imageshack.us/img822/5489/lloret.jpg

The fastest time so far is set by the young Dane Rasmus Quaade with 1h11'12. The time stands for a while, until Rui Costa is almost 2 minutes faster: 1h09'26.
img269.imageshack.us/img269/5900/1ruicosta.jpg

Niki Terpstra has a negative daily form (-1), but rides a good time, in 1h10'48 and will finish in 14th place today.
img809.imageshack.us/img809/4458/2terpstra.jpg

New best time! Luis León Sánchez is '37 faster than Rui Costa and sets the new target at 1h08'49. He makes up a bit for his weak day yesterday.
img194.imageshack.us/img194/5769/3llss.jpg

Edvald Boasson Hagen is one of the favurites for the win today, but he is slower than Sánchez. 2nd place at '28.
img13.imageshack.us/img13/7462/4ebh.jpg

A good ride by the Australian TT-champ. Richie Porte finishes '38 behind Sánchez and is 4th so far.
img651.imageshack.us/img651/742/5porte.jpg

Radio Shacks Janez Brajkovic is a good allrounder and proofs it with the 5th time so far, '47 behind Sánchez.
img62.imageshack.us/img62/5308/6brajkovic.jpg

Juan José Cobo is getting better in shape as long as the Vuelta lasts. He finishes in 1h09'51, 6th so far.
img12.imageshack.us/img12/5760/7cobo.jpg

A huge surprise! Philippe Gilbert, who won yesterday's stage, excels in the hilly terrain and sets the 3rd time so far, only '28 behind Sánchez.
img651.imageshack.us/img651/6340/8gilbert.jpg

First split time:
1. Sánchez 21'54; 2. Gilbert +6; 3. Boasson Hagen +11; 4. Costa +11; 5. Porte +18; 7. Cobo +22; 10. Vinokourov +32; 14. Roche +42; 17. A. Schleck +45; 21. Antón +49; 26. F. Schleck +55.

The top 5 has started and the first one is Nicholas Roche. The Irish AG2R-leader is 13th after the second split, but looses ground in the last sector and finishes 2'09 behind Sánchez.
img190.imageshack.us/img190/3199/9roche.jpg

The next one is Fränk Schleck, probably the worst timetrialist of the Top 5. He rides a decent ITT, finishing in 26th, 2'56 behind Sánchez.
img201.imageshack.us/img201/3360/10fschleck.jpg

Where Fränk is the worst, Alexandre Vinokourov is the best timetrialist of the current top 5 of the GC. The 38-year-old Kazach sets the 10th time in all sectors, so the 10th time at the finish.
img848.imageshack.us/img848/3163/11vinokourov.jpg

Second split time
1. Sánchez 48'28; 2. Gilbert +6; 3. Boasson Hagen +20; 4. Costa +20; 5. Porte +31; 7. Cobo +39; 10. Vinokourov +1'04; 13. Roche +1'22; 20. A. Schleck +1'42; 21. Antón +1'42; 26. F. Schleck +1'52.

Igor Antón is looking for the second GT-win this year, after winning the Giro. But the amount of racedays are causing a decline of form and today a weaker last sector. He finishes in 24th, 2'44 behind Sánchez.
img851.imageshack.us/img851/9368/12antn.jpg

The last rider to start is GC-leader Andy Schleck. He saves a bit of energy in the first two sectors and is flying in the last sector. He finishes in the 11th place, 1'53 behind Sánchez. This means he is '51 faster than his main rival!

Word from the DS
We are very happy with the result. Although we didn't finish in the top 10, Andy Schleck excelled with the 11th place, doing an excellent job for the GC!

Stage 10 and we have the first real mountain stage. After the start in Vall d'en Bas, the road immediately starts to ascend to the summit of the Coll de Canes (11.7km at 5.9%, height difference 700 metres). Next is a 32 kilometre long ascend of the Port de Collada de Tosses (average gradient of 3.2%, altitude 1800 metres, height difference 1000 metres). After a long descend and flat part, we enter Andorra and start to ascend again, to the summit of the Collet de Montaup (16.4km at 5.7%, alt. 1980m, height difference 1000m). After a short descend, the last 16 kilometres are ascending again to the Estació de Esquí D'Ordina - Arcalís, with an average gradient of 5.5%. The finish lies at an altitude of 2220metres and the riders face a total of 5127 height metres!

img201.imageshack.us/img201/2716/arcalis.jpg

175km to go
The race immediately explodes after the start, with a strong breakaway. Haimar Zubeldia (Radio Shack) is the first to arrive at the summit of the Coll de Canes, leading a group with Anthony Charteau (AG2R), Andrey Zeits (Astana), Alberto Losada (Katusha), Aitor Pérez Arrieta (Lampre), Michal Kwiatkowski (Omega Pharma), Brent Bookwalter (BMC) and Maryan Hary (Cofidis).
A second group with Christian Meier (Qantas), Xabier Zandio (Sky) and Luis Angel Maté (Cofidis) follows at 2 minutes and the peloton at 7'20.
img818.imageshack.us/img818/5707/1175km.jpg

122km to go
The first two groups have merged in the long ascend of the Port de Collada de Tosses. Anthpny Charteau leads the group over the summit, with th epeloton still 7 minutes behind.
img85.imageshack.us/img85/7931/2122km.jpg

37km to go
Chrstophe Le Mével (Garmin) has attacked out of the peloton and closed the gap to the leading group. He replaces Hary in it, who has been dropped. With 37 kilometres to go, the leading group has a margin of 4'00 to Leonardo Piepoli (Androni) and Vasil Kiryienka (Astana) and almost 5 minutes to the peloton.
But sooner than expected, still 37km to go, the race is shaken up. Juan José Cobo, GC's number 5, has an early attack in an attempt to make up some ground.
img20.imageshack.us/img20/9103/337km.jpg

31km to go
Because of the attack by Cobo, everything is shaken up. A group of 7 is in the lead, with Maté, Losada, Le Mével, Charteau, Zeits, Zubeldia and Meier. At 1'55 follows the 2nd part of the former leading group. Cobo and Thomas Voeckler, who was the only one that countered the attack by Cobo, have joined them. Kiryienka and Piepoli follow at 2'25, and Andy Schleck and Luis León Sánchez at 3'09, with the peloton at 3'56. What happened here? Not much, the 2 were doing the pace in the first peloton and suddenly had a gap!
img406.imageshack.us/img406/7269/431km.jpg

26km to go
The leading group arrives at the summit of the Collet de Montaup. Meier has been dropped, but Cobo has closed the gap to them! A second group with Sánchez, Schleck, Antón and Kiryienka follows at 1'16 and a third group with Vinokourov, Gilbert, Roche, Brajkovic, Fränk Schleck, Porte, De Gendt and Vanendert follows at 3 minutes. What is happening here?
img710.imageshack.us/img710/6597/526km.jpg

14km to go
The first 2 groups have merged in the descend. When the final climb starts, Thomas Voeckler attacks. But the red jersey isn't in the chasing group! Andy Schleck lost contact while getting a last bottle of sports drink and is '32 behind, but closing in. The group Fränk Schleck follows at 2'12.
img846.imageshack.us/img846/5480/614km.jpg

9km to go
Andy Schleck is back in the first group, '16 behind Voeckler, but how much energy did he waste? Together with Le Mével, Sánchez, Antón and Cobo, they have a margin of 1'18 to Fränk Schleck, who has dropped Vinokourov, Brajkovic and Roche in his chase.
img535.imageshack.us/img535/2979/79km.jpg

6km to go
Voeckler has been caught again, and this is the sign for Cobo to attack again. Andy Schleck and Antón can follow him. Fränk Schleck has closed the gap to Sánchez, Le Mével and Voeckler and is only 15 seconds behind.
img580.imageshack.us/img580/4724/86km.jpg

3km to go
With a third attack, Juan José Cobo has managed to create a margin of 17 seconds to Antón and Andy Schleck, with Fränk Schleck 37 seconds behind. Andy hasn't done the work in chasing back Cobo, and when he finds out Antón is running out of energy, he takes over the lead.
img43.imageshack.us/img43/5248/93kmt.jpg

1km to go
He closes the gap to Cobo, entering the last kilometre, and is positioning for the uphill sprint. Antón is dead tired and is even passed by Fränk.
img337.imageshack.us/img337/5286/101km.jpg

Finish
Cobo has no more energy left for the sprint after the 3 attacks. He deserved the win today, but apparantly Andy didn't feel like giving away presents this early in the Vuelta. Maybe next stage?
Older brother Fränk finishes at '25, Antón at '47 and the others over 2'30 behind.

Word from the DS
Wow, what a stage!!! Cobo showed he has some balls, attacking with 37km to go, and it was hard enough to catch him and crack him in the final kilometre. Anyway, things look great for the GC, but first a well deserved rest day!

Good win for Andy, proving his dominance in the mountains. Smile

It's the first rest day in the Vuelta and to summarize the first 10 stages, I can say they were very entertaining. Besides the prologue and the time trial, an early breakaway was succesful 4 times, one stage saw a punchy win (Gilbert) and the 2 mountainous stage were exciting untill the finish.
Only one stage ended in a mass sprint, question is if in the second half of the Vuelta, the sprinter teams are willing to work harder to let the stage end in a mass sprint. Andy Schleck has shown he's the best climber, and probably the biggest opponent will be Juan José Cobo. It's a bit of a shame, that the run for the overall win isn't as exciting as it was in the Giro and Tour. Only Cobo, Antón and older brothe Fränk are capable of following Andy. But it ain't over yet, with some exciting stages to come, including the Lagos de Covadonga.
But first, I'll give you reports of the USA Pro Cycling Challenge and the GP Ouest Plouay.

The USA Pro Cycling Challenge consists of 7 stages in Colorado, USA, with 3 of them very mountainous. Last year's race was dominated by Andy Schleck.

The favourites
*** Robert Gesink
** Domenico Pozzovivo (Colnago), Tejay van Garderen (Colnago), Robert Kiserlovski (Garmin)
* Jérome Coppel (Accent.Jobs), Damiano Caruso (Liquigas), Matthias Frank (BMC)

Our goal
Nothing but the win

Stage 1
The race starts with a prologue from 8.2 kilometres in Colorado Springs. The route is mostly descending.

Tejay van Garderen (Colnago) has set the best time, but one rider is faster: The American TT-champ. David Zabriskie. Sébastien Rosseler finishes in 3rd.

Stage 2
We enter the mountais in stage 2. 145 kilometres after the start in Salida, the finish is at the summit of Crested Butte.
img24.imageshack.us/img24/7779/8stage2.jpg

Our domestiques worked hard today to keep the peloton together (or to allow a breakaway getting only a small margin), and to bring our leader Robert Gesink in a perfect position in the last climb. We managed to do this, and Gesink didn't even has to attack, he simply rode away from the others. Our Dutch climber won the stage, with 2nd guy Domenico Pozzovivo 2'35 behind!

Stage 3
The 3rd stage from Gunnison to Aspen is short, only 109 kilometres, but features two horrible climbs. The last 5 kilometres in the 2nd climb of the day are on gravel roads, and after a 11km descend, the finish awaits in Aspen.
img109.imageshack.us/img109/3404/11stage3.jpg

Our goal today was to get Rob Ruijgh in a breakaway, so he'd get a chance at the win. But unfortunately, nobody could keep up with him in the first ascend, and also the other teams didn't let him get away. So after a 60 kilometre-long solo attack, he got reeled in again.
After that, Yannick Eijssen (BMC) and Johannes Fröhlinger (M&M's) attacked. But when the gradients of the last climb got higher, Robert Gesink rode away from the peloton, closed the gap to the 2 leaders and left them away. After the descend, he took his 2nd consecutive stage win. Pozzovivo finished again in 2nd place.

Stage 4
Stage 4 is a mountain TT in Vail.

Again, Robert Gesink was unstoppable. He was a little bit slow in the first part, but blasted the opponents away in the last, ascending part. Also a great result by Wout Poels, finishing in 10th.
