Petronas - Monster Energy; The end of an era
Batista15
Great start for your team but Boasson Hagen was very strong there.

Stage 2 from Granada to Córdoba is 189 kilometres long and classified as flat. But because of the Alto de San Jerónimo with the summit 13 kilometres before the finish, we don't expect a mass sprint, as the climb will be to tough for the sprinters.

177km to go
Ladies and gentlemen, I'm proud to announce the first attackers of this Vuelta: Andreas Stauff (Omega Pharma) and Mirco Lorenzetto (Androni)!
img843.imageshack.us/img843/3526/1177km.jpg

100km to go
Of course, the 2 are caught and what follows is a continuous amount of attacks. Finally, 14 riders succeed in forming a BOTD:
Mathieu Claude (Europcar), Greg Henderson (Astana), Kevin Hulsmans (Cofidis), Geoffrey Lequatre (Radio Shack), Mirco Lorenzetto (Androni), Nikolas Maes (Omega Pharma), Jarosław Marycz (Saxo Bank), Daniele Ratto (Nespresso), Vicente Reynès (Lotto), Maxime Vantomme (Katusha), Frederik Veuchelen (Vacansoleil), Frederik Willems (Lotto) and Matthew Wilson (Garmin). With 100km to go, they have a gap of 6'16.
img651.imageshack.us/img651/8061/2100km.jpg

30km to go
Team Sky does most of the work in the chase and with 30km to go, the peloton is 3'10 behind the peloton.
img252.imageshack.us/img252/4565/330km.jpg

16km to go
Apparantly Cavendish must have looked at the road book and has seen the gradients of the Alto de San Jerónimo, becuase suddenly Team Sky leaves the first places of the peloton and no other team is willing to take over from them!
The ascend of the San Jerónimo has started and the 3 Belgians in the BOTD have attacked and created a small gap of 29 seconds. Veuchelen, Hulsmans and Willems face gradients of 15% with a 2 minute lead over the peloton.
img193.imageshack.us/img193/9343/416km.jpg

13km to go
The 3 have finished the ascend. Veuchelen crossed the summit as the first one, so he'll takes the KOTM-jersey. A group of 7 riders follows at '24 and the peloton (without attacks out of it!!) at 2'15.
img849.imageshack.us/img849/7756/513km.jpg

3km to go
The 3 Belgian riders cooperate excellent and maintain a lead of 20 seconds in the descend and flat part towards Córdoba. The peloton is 1'36 behind. Veuchelen is in the worst position, and probably won't win it.
img190.imageshack.us/img190/3852/63km.jpg

Finish
It's a close finish between Hulsmans and Willems, and the win goes to Kevin Hulsmans for the Cofidis-team. Daniele Ratto wins the sprint for the 4th place. This means Hulsmans also takes the lead in the GC.
img141.imageshack.us/img141/6512/7finish.jpg

Peloton
The peloton finishes 1'06 behind Hulsmans and Boasson Hagen wins the sprint for the 11th place, in front of Theo Bos.
Some GC-contenders already loose some time, probably due to bad placing before the San Jerónimo. Steven Kruijswijk, Mikel Nieve, Thomas Löfkvist and especially Vasil Kiryienka are the biggest names.

Today's winner
img835.imageshack.us/img835/6466/10hulsmans.jpg

Word from the DS
Just as in the Giro and Tour, a breakaway wins the first stage in line. Funny to me. For us, we didn't want to chase the BOTD, as we believed that we stood no chance against Boasson Hagen in the sprint. We could have gotten a second place when the breakaway would have got caught, now it's the 12th place. In the end, people only remember the winner, so..........

Thank you sutty68, it cost me a few hours to collect all the information (had to find out if it was a real Vuelta or a variant), the screens, etcetera...

Great preview Dienblad, Andy should do well against the tired opponents, maybe Cobo will be the biggest rival, but Andy should dominate in Spain. Nice start in the prologue, goo luck for the next stages, i will certainly follow Smile
I'll be back

He was the waterboy in that stage, and was positioned in the back of the peloton when the climb started. Didin't bother to bring him to the front.

Stage 3 from Córdoba to Puertollano is relatively short with 153 kilometres, and is pretty flat.
img687.imageshack.us/img687/4555/perfil03.jpg
img836.imageshack.us/img836/7619/puertollano.jpg

78km to go
Just as yesterday, a pretty big BOTD is formed and takes an advantage of several minutes to the peloton. Ciolek, Irizar, Houanard, Santambrogio, Hoste, Sulzberger, Beppu, Dockx, Gavazzi and Veuchelen have a lead of over 4'30 with 78km to go.
img826.imageshack.us/img826/5748/278km.jpg

11km to go
4 riders have attacked out of the leading group and are able to keep a safe margin to the peloton of 2'17. Gerald Ciolek (Omega Pharma), Gert Dockx (Lotto), Francesco Gavazzi (Lampre) and Steve Houanard (AG2R) will battle it out for the stage win.
img193.imageshack.us/img193/4051/311kmq.jpg

1km to go
Houanard is leading the group with about one kilometre to go. The 2 best sprinters in it, Gavazzi and Ciolek, are closely behind and the battle for the win will be among them.
img51.imageshack.us/img51/2888/41kms.jpg

Finish
Francesco Gavazzi wins the sprint surprisingly easy, considering Ciolek is the best sprinter on papaer. But apparantly, the German has spent to much energy earlier in the stage.
img822.imageshack.us/img822/4999/5finish.jpg

Peloton
Nobody seems to want to sprint for the 5th place in the peloton. With just a few hundred of metres to go, the sprinters finally start the sprint. It's too late to beat Theo Bos, as he was the only one that seemed interested in it.

Stage 4, from Ciudad Real to Argamasilla de Alba is 233 kilometres long. And although the highest point today is about 900 metres, the route is almost completely flat.
img109.imageshack.us/img109/8581/perfil04.jpg
img528.imageshack.us/img528/1655/argamasilla.jpg

185km to go
With 2 succesfull breakaways in a row, we try to be in the BOTD today. Niki Terpstra is the one to do it, but the 14-man big group he's in, doesn't get the approval by the peloton.
img51.imageshack.us/img51/1095/1185km.jpg

115km to go
After the group of 14 gets caught, Martin Kohler (BMC) tries again. But strangely, nobody wants to join him! The Swiss rider rides for about 40 kilometres with a margin of 1 minute to the peloton, before the peloton catches him again.
img706.imageshack.us/img706/1811/2115km.jpg

9km to go
The next 60 kilometres, nothing happens. Really, nothing.... No attacks, no crashes, nothing.
So entering the last 10 kilometres, Sony Ericsson and Team Sky have taken the lead of the peloton.
img3.imageshack.us/img3/2181/32km.jpg

2km to go
With 2km to go, we find out how the sprinting hierarchy is in the Sony Ericsson. André Greipel is leading out Edvald Boasson Hagen!! Theo Bos is in the perfect position, in the wheel of EBH. He is followed by Mark Cavendish and Andy Schleck, who believes this is the best place to stay out of trouble because of possible crashes.
img163.imageshack.us/img163/6931/42kmu.jpg

1km to go
The stage was too long for Bos. When EBH starts his sprint with 1km to go, he can't follow the wheel and is falling behind. Cavendish is in 2nd, closely followed by Haussler and JJ Haedo.
img6.imageshack.us/img6/2002/51km.jpg

Finish
Boasson Hagen stays in the lead untill 100 metres to go, but then gets passed by the current World champ. It's win number 9 of the season for the Manx Missile. EBH finishes in 2nd, Haussler in 3rd and Bos falls back to the 11th place.

Word from the DS
Now we know what Bos is capable of in races over 200 kilometres. He for sure isn't in the same league as Cavendish and EBH. Oh well, there will be more sprints this Vuelta...

The peloton has to forget to sprint for Bos to win. Pfft

dienblad
img812.imageshack.us/img812/8642/1logop.jpg

It's the 5th stage. 170 kilometres between Alcázar de Juan and Cuenca. The first part of the route is pretty flat, whereas the last part is a little more difficult, with the summit of the Alto del Castillo (5.3km at 3.4%) 12 kilometres before the finish.
img848.imageshack.us/img848/2631/perfil05.jpg
img267.imageshack.us/img267/4359/cuenca.jpg

76km to go
As we believe that the profile of today's stage suits a breakaway win, we'll try to be in the BOTD. Immediately after the start, a group of 15 riders attacked and created a margin to the peloton of 1 minute. As that group was to big, we chased them, with the help of Cofidis.
When the peloton was together again, Lampre's Vitali Kondrut attacks. This is the sign for Niki Terpstra to follow him. The 2 get joined by Rick Flens (Rabobank), Wesley Sulzberger (Qantas), Leif Hoste (Katusha) and Michal Kwiatkowski (Omega Pharma). With 76km to go, they have a margin to the peloton of 5'30.
img703.imageshack.us/img703/6404/176km.jpg

39km to go
In the next 37 kilometres, the peloton, led by the Cofidis team, decreases the margin to 2'31. As he knows that they won't make it till the finish, Terpstra attacks.
img819.imageshack.us/img819/9573/239km.jpg

28km to go
He quickly creates a gap of 40 seconds, but when the 5 others start to cooperate, they close the gap and after 10 kilometres of solo-attacking, the 6 leaders are together again.
img594.imageshack.us/img594/4725/328km.jpg

12km to go
The leading group has started the ascend of the Alto del Castillo. Still feeling very well (fitness 98 and daily form +5!!), and with the peloton closing in very quickly, Terpstra attacks again. He reaches the summit with a margin of 23 seconds to the peloton, that has caught the other 5 breakaway-members.
img708.imageshack.us/img708/8357/412km.jpg

5km to go
Then the unthinkable happens. The pace in the peloton drops and the margin of Terpstra rapidly increases to a minute. The teams of the sprinters start to look at each other and no team wants to do the chase.
Our riders go to the front of the peloton to slow it down even more!
img825.imageshack.us/img825/8995/55km.jpg

Finish
The win is gone for the peloton, as Niki Terpstra wins the 5th stage of La Vuelta to Cuenca!! It's the 2nd win of the year, besides one stage win in the Eneco Tour.
img576.imageshack.us/img576/9066/6finish.jpg

Peloton
The question is how big the margin will be? Can Terpstra take over the red jersey?
What happens in the peloton in the last 5 kilometres is even more strange. The pace stays low, and with 1km to go, nobody has even started to sprint. So our riders start to sprint, and Bos, Schleck, Vanendert & De Gendt make it a 1-2-3-4-5...... Rolling Eyes
The peloton finishes 1'34 behind Terpstra, so he becomes the new GC-leader!!

1. Great win by Terpstra. Being the most attacking rider in the BOTD, he deserved the win.
2. What the heck happened here? Normally Terpstra would have got caught after the last climb and their would be a mass sprint. But no chase, no sprint..... Ridiculous.

The race

54km to go
As we have got a little experience on this route (I believe it is the same as Le Samyn, so we have won 2 times on it), we know it is important to be in the BOTD, as a breakaway always has a great chance to win on this route. After Vanmarcke tried to be in a breakaway 2 times, Joost Posthuma has more luck.
When climbing the steep cobbled hill (gradients up to 16%) for the first time, he is leading a group of 10 riders, featuring 2 from M&M's (Alexandre Geniez & Patrick Gretsch), 2 from Sky (Kanstantsin Siutsou & Danny Pate), 2 from Vacansoleil (Johnny Hoogerland & Przemyslaw Niemiec) one from FDJ (Jérémy Roy), 1 from Sony Ericsson (John Lee Augustyn) and 1 from Omega Pharma (Tom Stubbe). They hav a margin of 6'23 to the peloton. As all bigger teams are present in the leading group, the chase in the peloton has to be done by the smaller teams Landbouwkrediet, Accent.Jobs, Topsport Vlaanderen and a weak Garmin-team.
img9.imageshack.us/img9/7603/654km.jpg

38km to go
Posthuma feels that he is the strongest in the leading group, and in the 2nd of 4 climbs of the cobbled hill, he easily rides away from the other 9. With the peloton still 3'12 behind, all things are possible.
img35.imageshack.us/img35/1315/738km.jpg

8km to go
The margin to the chasing group slowly gets bigger and bigger, and the peloton isn't capable in closing the gap. So when Posthuma is climbing for the last time today with a margin of 2'20 to the peloton, the chasing group has been caught by the peloton, he can even sheer to his friends!
img12.imageshack.us/img12/4675/88km.jpg

Finish
In the last 8 kilometres, Posthuma can take it pretty easy and cruises over the finish line in Overijse, to take his first win of the season!
img684.imageshack.us/img684/7663/9finish.jpg

2nd place
Without having to waste energy in the entire race, our riders have enough energy left to sprint for the 2nd place. And with success, as Coen Vermeltfoort finshes in 2nd and Jens Keukeleire in 3rd. The result is even better than last year, with "only" 1st and 2nd!

Word from the DS
For the 2nd time today, this was an excellent result. Posthuma did great, and the others made the party even bigger. And to make it even better for the team: stage win today in the USA Pro Cycling Challenge (report will come when the entire USAPCC is done).
By the way: I checked twice, bth the Vuelta as the Druivenkoers were on extreme!

@ all: Thank you, but please consider the fact that something was bugged in the Vuelta stage, and that I've found the way to win on that Druivenkoers-route everytime (decent cobbler in an early breakaway with weak cobblers). But nevertheless, it's nice to perform that way Wink
Next report from La Vuelta hpefully later today, still have to play it.

1-2 last year and now 1-2-3 this year, the team definantly loves this race Smile

About the tactics, do you think that it will work in races like Gent-Wevelgem, Ronde or Roubaix? I mean, send a rider with 78 cobble's with the breakaway and let your captain stay in the peleton? Perhaps it works with a puncheur in M-S...
Guess who's back? Smile
Lets see how many friens are still around...
