Amstel Gold Race

As the first of the Ardennes classics this will be the first big test for Matzen, who for the first time will race these as captain.
When that is said the bookies haven’t even bothered setting odds for him. We just hope he will make the team look less embarrassing in the Ardennes than previous years…

i1353.photobucket.com/albums/q675/AllanHG/Nordic%20Cycling%20Project/2015%20Volvo%20Sas/04-14-Amstel1_zps86cc048e.jpg
Bøchman was very active in showing our presence in the early part of the race.

Not that these early breaks have any bearing on the race, when Commonwealth Bank and Nissan have agreed no one is to go away…
i1353.photobucket.com/albums/q675/AllanHG/Nordic%20Cycling%20Project/2015%20Volvo%20Sas/04-14-Amstel2_zpsc1125b90.jpg
Later on both Chris Anker and Fuglsang tries to get in one of the strong breaks, but it wasn’t until we stopped participating that Santambrogio, Westra and Tiernan-Locke were allowed to get away.
i1353.photobucket.com/albums/q675/AllanHG/Nordic%20Cycling%20Project/2015%20Volvo%20Sas/04-14-Amstel3_zpsa97ae24a.jpg
Gilbert attacked right before the 20 km mark and Brian decided to go after him.
It didn’t last, but at least Matzen were in the front group when the “peloton” cracked the first time leaving 24 riders in front.

In the end he found himself fighting with guys like Andy Schleck, Valverde and Visconti for a top 20.

In the meantime Cunego rewards his team for all their hard work.

Matzen showed good spirit beating Horner and Bakelandts in the sprint for 17th place.

I definitely don't dislike it enough to be bothered with changing it Wink

The Rider
A great result for the team at Amstel Gold but no doubt humbling after the recent success of the team.

Also how could you send 'the Bochman' to the Rund um Koln! That should have been a race where all the inexperienced riders came out to ride, still a nice win. Wink

Atlantius
The Rider: I know, and that was the plan. Bøchman went there to build some form for later goals and the "smaller names" chased the break with all they had - they just couldn't get away and when they were completely empty Lasse was given the go and he never looked back...

The early part of the race went on pretty much as Amstel.

Only today a two-rider break consisting of Cobo and Elissonde actually seems to stand a chance. With 18 km to go they still have 2’20’’ on the favourites.

It looks like the win will go to the break as they still have more than a minute going in to the last km.

Behind Fuglsang is doing great to place Matzen in front for the final climb.

Brian thanks for the effort and takes part of the sprint right in the front of the group. This is without a doubt the closest the team has ever been to an Ardennes top 10!

He does it! Finishing just ahead of Mollema and 7th in the favourites sprint!!

welker: A great result in deed - and very weird to see the break survive. It's like 1/10 times I don't send a guy in the break. Why didn't I do that today Angry

Tell me about it..Rolling Eyes Smile

About the squad, its nice to see the Scandinavians becoming a force to be reckoned with so soon (although I am a bit worried they might totally dominate everyone eventually!) if only the same would happen for my Qatari's! Pfft

Brian did well today Wink

9th. Strong performance Grin

The Rider: I doubt it will be total domination. I had a fairly high evolution the first couple of seasons, but have lowered it now that the homegrown talents start to show themselves. Yet the ambition was to make an all-Nordic team top the rankings at the end of a season.

sutty: The best Ardennes result in the teams history is in deed very well done!

Jakstar: Very strong in deed. And stronger than expected - guess it was the fewer hills/shorter distance made the difference today Grin

Liège – Bastogne – Liège

With 100 km to go 8 riders have been out front for about 100 km. at this point they have a gap of just under eight minutes and the peloton is chasing them hard.

50 km to the line and five minutes. Looks like the big teams have Kiryinka, Westra end the others within reach.
i1353.photobucket.com/albums/q675/AllanHG/Nordic%20Cycling%20Project/2015%20Volvo%20Sas/04-18-Liege4_zps595c1b58.jpg
Going in to the last 30 km four riders are still out front. Since this is not our race to win we let Euskaltel and Lotto continue to do all the work while Matzen is being protected by Fuglsang.
i1353.photobucket.com/albums/q675/AllanHG/Nordic%20Cycling%20Project/2015%20Volvo%20Sas/04-18-Liege5_zpsc3f35b0b.jpg
18 km from goal things starts to get stirred up and Brian decides to test his legs against the very best.

In the end he had more than enough to do just hanging on to the favourites, but all in all another promising race from the young Dane.

Gasparotto takes the win, while a few of the breakaway guys hang on to finish in the favourites group and Brian just miss out on the top 10.

Small Race Summary

Himmerland Rundt

As the oldest of the existing Danish UCI one-day races this race has a special place in our hearts. We want to win it by spectacular racing. Most of the team is mainly preparing for May, but Matzen will show his Ardennes form on his home soil while Bak and Kessiakoff also will have free roles.

As announced there was plenty of attacking right from the morning, but lots of teams wanted a sprint, so no one was given the go

In the end Bak did good in setting up Matzen for the finish

Unfortunately Wesley Sulzberger tagged along and on a flat finish like this he is quite a bit stronger than Brian…

Tour de Romandie

Tour de Romandie was mainly for getting in shape for the Giro team, but since Lasse Bøchman has won mountain jersey here the last two years he might have his eyes set on that goal again depending on how the racing develops.
Fuglsang won last year in top shape. This year he is peaking for the Giro, but will aim for a good Romandie GC as well even though it is a very easy route without a lot of mountains.

The prologue wan’t that impressive for us, but with four guys in the top 20 nothing is lost either.

The second stage was a fairly easy uphill finish that was taken by a break, while Fuglsang managed to win a few seconds on some of the other favourites.

Stage three was another one for the break. It finished with a downhill section and some flat terrain. Not really what GC-leader Atapuma prefers so we put the pressure on him and Jakob won little more time in the GC, while Lasse picked up enough points to threat the Colombians mountain jersey as well.

The organizer had marked stage four as a day for the sprinters. I don’t know how they missed the small mountain on the profile, but we sure didn’t!
We set a hard pace all day allowing Fuglsang to pick up a total of 12 bonus seconds while Lasse picked up enough mountain points to tie with Atapuma in that competition.
Jakob tried to win some time on the descent, but the other favourites wasn’t in for it so he was caught again 5 km from the line and in the end it finished in a messy sprint.

The important hilly TT on the fifth day was a very good day for the team as we several times over the day held a provisional 1-2-3. Fuglsang rode a good TT finishing 2nd leaving him 18 seconds from the GC lead with one stage to go.

Jakob did his best on the final stage taking every possible chance, but Liquigas was just too strong to break on an easy stage like this one.
At least Van der Sande got removed from the 2nd place in the GC.
Bøchman took the mountain jersey on the first climb of the day, but lost it again on the second.

welker: Lets hope so. There's a lot of stronger climbers, so we will have to be clever to beat them...
