Kenya or Ethiopia. Simple math, they've got the highest VO2max, looking at running

I know, that was pretty much why I put Kenya up there, as Ethiopia and Bekele was the dominant factor on 5k/10k when I followed running. |

If we are talking about next GT winners from odd countries, why not Jamaicans as top sprinters?
Wouldn't it be a genious idea to encourage cycling in Jamaica and scout talents to come to Europe?

Yes, just the thing we need in cycling. Cyclists from a country that refuses to let anyone dope test their athletes while they're preparing for important competitions

On second thoughts, they probably get disqualified for smoking weed

Not caught as much of the Giro as I would like, never been a good time of the year for me. Well done to Hesjedal, and great to see De Gendt go so well.

Close to Jamaica, the Trinidad and Tobago cyclist Phillip Njisane will be competing in the Track Cycling sprint events at the London Olympics! It may not be road sprinting, but its a start!

Sprinting on the road is quite different than on track. Genuine sprinting qualities would rather translate into track sprinting in terms of cycling.
See Cavendish ? Probably the best sprinter around at the moment, he's done a lot on the track, yet he wasn't an actual sprinter there, riding the madison (as the sprinting guy, yes, but that hardly compares to 200 m sprinting).
Some of you might not know that, but I can remember the very early 2000's, or maybe the late 90's, back then, for some odd reason, Cippolini and Zabel both decided to take part in the track world championships. Guess for which event ? Pursuit.
People from Eastern Africa (Ethiopia and Kenya, namely), could probably be very decent road cyclists, if their access to it was broad enough, although running is very VO2 based, whereas cycling has a strength dimension that adds as well. Not saying that they wouldn't cope with it, they just haven't really shown that they can do it yet.
Same with 800 to 3000 m specialists (mostly North Africans), they could probably become worthy pursuiters/road-sprinters/prologue specialists. |
