Top 3.
The race
The story of the race is a BOTD consisting of 6 riders that get a maximum lead of 8'30. 4 names are unknown, but the other 2 are surprises: Alessandro Petacchi and Peter Sagan.
Why are the 2 biggest favourites in the race present in the BOTD? We can't tell for Ale Jet, but Sagan is accidentaly in it. He was leading the peloton in the first kilometres, and suddenly, without attacking, had a gap of over a minute....
He worked a bit in the BOTD, but when the gap was decreasing, he slowed down and settled himself in last place of the group.
Because of it, the pace in the BOTD drops and the 6 are caught with 15km to go. We set up our train with Posthuma, Sagan as the last lead out man, and Jens Keukeleire to finish it. Good plan, but the work out was disastrous. Keukeleire started the sprint at 1500 metres before the finish while in 4th place, but never ever was able to gain speed. So he finished in 12th position.
And the battle for the win? That was extremely exciting, with Fabio Felline (Nespresso), Marco Frapporti (Colnago) and Manuel Belletti (Team Type 1) battling it out with a three man drag race. In the end, Stortoni takes the win, with less than half a wheel difference (and someone forgot to paint the finishline...)

The last race before La Vuelta starts is the Dutch Food Valley Classic, formerly known as Veenendaal - Veenendaal. A race with many short hills (each with a maximum height difference of 80 metres) and an expected mass sprint. Like last year, when Sky's Chris Sutton won the race.
The favourites *** Chris Sutton (Sky), Marcel Kittel, Samuel Dumoulin (Cofidis) ** Leonardo Duque (Sony Ericsson), Steven Caethoven (Accent), Krzysztof Szczawinski (CCC) * Jetse Bol (Rabo CT), Gianni Meersman (FDJ), Pim Ligthart
Our goal
As the start and finish of this race are in my home town, I want the rider to bring me the win (so they'll probably mess it up in the sprint )
The race
The race is heavily affected by the wind with speeds of over 60 km/h, is shred into many echelons. 4 kilometres before the finish, the last 2 remaining members of a 8-man BOTD are caught. Matthew Busche (Radio Shack) and Guillaume Van Keirsbulck (Omega Pharma) are the unfortunate ones. The peloton is lead by our riders, with Lieuwe Westra leading out Pim Ligthart and finally Marcel Kittel.
But the sprint and the outcome are even worse than in the Coppa Bernocchi. Ligthart starts his sprint at 2200 metres, and has an empty energy bar at 1900 metres. Than he's already passed by 5 opponents. Then Kittel starts to sprint, and gets without energy even before the last kilometre starts...........
So back to the battle for the win. Young Jetse Bol is in a great position, leading with 200 metres to go, but then he starts to fade. He gets passed by Accent.Jobs Steven Caethoven, who takes his first win of the year. Bol finishes in 2nd and Gianni Meersman in 3rd. And Kittel? An amazing 11th position. I better stay out of my hometown for a few weeks (hey, tomorrow starts the Vuelta, let's go there )

My god, Bernochi and Dutch Food classics we're disastrous. What is happening in sprint. You go well in mountains, TT and hills, but when it gets to sprinting, it becomes dificult for you. Try don't set up train, get the whell of other sprinters and then jump when you think it's time to do ti.

I know, it's horrible. But I really wanna do it on my own, with my own train. I sometimes try to follow someone's wheel, also with mixed results.....
While the GT-contenders are in Spain for the Vuelta, the only German World Tour race is organized. It's the 17th edition of the Vattenfall Cyclassics with the finish in Hamburg. USA's Tyler Farrar is the only one who won the race twice. Last year it was Norwegian Thr Hushovd, with an impressive solo ride from the Waseberg (700m at 11%), who took the win.
The Waseberg should be the executioner in this race, but unless the 11% average gradient, the race often ends in a mass sprint.
84km to go
Climbing the Waseberg for the first time, a group of 15 riders is about 2'40 in front of the peloton. And this is no ordinary BOTD, as there many strong riders present, even outsiders for the win. What to say about Paul Martens (Rabobank), Jakob Fuglsang (Radio Shack), Roman Kreuziger (Astana), Bernhard Eisel (Sky) and Linus Gerdeman (Katusha)??
Why aren't we present? Well, we tried several times, got caught every time, and the one time we didn't tried to be in a breakaway... Well, you all know how PCM works .
39km to go
The group was surely too strong to let them get away, so they get caught by the peloton with 50km to go. The next to attack is veteran Stuart O'Grady. He launches his attack with 39km to go, but never creates a gap of over a minute.
26km to go
O'Grady gets caught and than shortly before the last ascend of the Waseberg, another strong group breaks away. In it are STijn Vandenbergh, Fabian Cancellara, Johan Vansummeren, former world champ Alessandro Ballan and again O'Grady.
7km to go
Also this strong group doesn't get away, and when they get caught, Staf Scheirlinckx from the Lotto-Belisol team is the next to launch an attack.
3km to go
Scheirlinckx is joined by some riders from the previous breakaway, namely Ballan, Cancellara, Vansummeren and O'Grady (of course, be in the breakaway three times within 36 km....). Ballan leads the group with 3km to go, with the peloton '20 behind, but approaching fast.
1km to go
A new leader entering the last km. It's Paris-Roubaix-winner Fabian Cancellara who has passed Ballan and is heading towards another win this year.
Finish
Cancellara heads it home and wins the Vattenfall Cyclassics. Last years winner Thor Hushovd takes the 2nd place, followed by Tom Boonen. And what about us? Well, we tried to be in front, but our riders got too exhausted, so Lieuwe Westra finished in 17th and Marcel Kittel in 20th....

The winner
Word from the DS
Hoping for a mass sprint, the Waseberg turned out to be to tough for many riders, including urs. Cancellara looked strong!
Welcome to Espana for the 3rd GT in 2012. The 67 edition starts in Granada and finishes after 3356 kilometres in Madrid. The route features 94 Individual Time Trial-kilometres divided over 2 stages, 5 mountain top finishes and as a highest point of 2220 metres above sea level.
There are 2 record winners, with 3 GC-wins each. Swiss Tony Rominger won in '92, '93 and '94 and Spanish Roberto Heras won in '00, '03 and '04. The 2011-edition was a huge succes for Robert Gesink from the Monster Energy - Ford team, winning his 2nd GT that year.
The route
Stage 1-4
The Vuelta kicks off with a 7km prologue in Granada. The difficulty lies in the first part, with 150 height metres to be climb and gradients up to 14%! The next day the peloton heads to the West, with 186 kilometres to Córdoba. Shortly for the finish is the Alto de San Jerónimo, which wil probably causes splits in the peloton. The next 2 stages with finishes in Puertollano and Argamasilla de Alba should be for the sprinters.
Spoiler
Stage 5-6
Stage 5 and 6 are for the GC-contenders. First, the riders arrive in the centre of Spain with stage 5 to Cuenca, with the Alto del Castillo shortly before the finish. Stage 6 is the most difficult untill now. 217 kilometres to the Estación de Esquí Aramón Valdalinares at an altitude of 1980 metres.
Spoiler
Stage 7-9
Stage 7 and 8 are for the sprinters and the 9th is the 2nd ITT. The riders head to the Costa Brava with stage 7 towards Vinaros and stage 8 to Lloret de Mar. Stage 9 will shake up the GC, as it is a 48km hilly ITT with start and finish in Lloret de Mar.
Spoiler
Stage 10-11
After stage 10 and 11, we'll know who are the ones that will aim for the podium, as we hit the Pyrenées. In stage 10, the riders have to climb the Port de Collada de Tosses (1st category, 1800metres) and the Collet de Montaup (1st category, 1980 metres), before the final ascend to Estació d'Esquí D'Ordino - Arcalis (HC, 2220 metres). The next day, after the Port del Cantó (1730m), Coll de la Creu de Perves (1350m), the Coll de la Espina (1410m) and the Coll de Fadas (1470m), the stage finishes at the Estación de Esquí Aramón Cerler, at an altitude of 1920m.
Spoiler
Stage 12-15
After 2 tough mountain stages, it's for the sprinters again in stage 12 to Burgos. Stage 13 to Santuario de la Bien Aparecida has an uphill finish, with 250 height metres that have to be climbed in the last 4.5km. The next 2 stages are for the climbers again. Firsty, stage 14 with the dreadful ascend of the Lagos de Covadonga, 16 kilometres at 7.4%, with parts up to 15%. The day after the second mountain stage in Asturias to the Puerto de Pajares (1380m).
Spoiler
Stage 16-18
After the 2 mountains stages, the peloton heads to the South with a flat stage towards Valladolid. Stage 17 towards La Granje de San Ildefonso features 2 ascends of the Puerto de Navacerrada (1880m). Stage 18 is the last mountain stage, with the finish in Avila. Before the finish await 1 3rd category climb, 3 2nd category climbs, and 1 1st category climb, the Puerto de Mijares.
Spoiler
Stage 19-21
After a relatively flat stage towards Alcobendas, the Vuelta will be decided in the 20th stage, a 39km ITT from Guadalajara to Alcalá de Henares. The Vuelta traditionally ends in Madrid, where the sprinters will have one final chance.
Our goals
- Stage win(s) and GC-win with Andy Schleck.
- Wear the points jersey (sponsor goal).

GC
Igor Antón won the Giro d'Italia earlier this year after a heroic battle with Andy Schleck. Can the Basque do it again in his home country? He was close in 2010, but crashed out of it in the red jersey. He has the abilitiy to do it in the mountains, but has 2 negative factors: over 90 TT-kilometres and already 64 race days this season.
After getting beaten by Antón in the Giro, Andy Schleck is determined to finally win a GT, after 4 times finishing in second place. And with only 40 race days, he should be fresh!
Denis Menchov won La Vuelta twice before ('05 & '07) and is aiming for a third one. He rode a good Tour, finishing in 5th, and it may be his last chance being already 34 years.
Finally, after 15 months, Fränk Schleck can compete against his little brother again. Fränk finished 7th in Le Tour, and wants to improve the 5th place in 2010.
Janez Brajkovic gets his chance to show that he can ride a good GT, and needs to finish in the Top 5 of the GC. It may be his last chance under the wings of Johan Bruyneel to get a free role. So it's up to him.
One of Spain biggest GT-talents is Benat Intxausti. The Basque-rider from the Movistar team is a great allrounder and will be the leader of Team Movistar.
Luis León Sánchez is another great Spanish allrounder. He finished at the podium last year (3rd place) and is eager to improve that result this year.
Vasil Kiryienka is Astana's hope for the GC. The Belarussian rider is a great allrounder and already finished in the top 10 in the Giro.
Juan José Cobo got the opportunity from his Nespresso-team to focus completely at the Vuelta. With only 24 race days, he's the most fresh of al riders, but the question is if that is enough?
The Ardennes-classics, Giro, Tour and the Vuelta in one season. Madness, or can Joaquím Rodríguez surprise anyone?
The rumour is that Alexandre Vinokourov will retire after the season. The Kazach won the Vuelta in 2006 and wants to get at least a stage win, if he's going to retire or not.
Irish Daniel Martin won't win the Vuelta, but with his attacking style, he's capable of getting a good result.
Edited by dienblad on 08-03-2012 18:02
World champion Mark Cavendish is best sprinter in the world, on paper. His season has been disappointing so far, getting beaten by especially Farrar many times. Can he do it in Spain?
The boy wonder from Norway, Edvald Boasson Hagen, showed a great form winning the Eneco Tour one week before the start of the Vuelta. Can he bring this form to the Vuelta?
José Joaquín Rojas is the Spanish hope for a sprint win. His transfer to Garmin - Barracuda hasn't been succesful so far, with just one win in the Tour de Romandie. He's eager to chance this in his home country.
André Greipel is a beast in the sprint, but has to battle against EBH in the Sony Ericsson-team.
Heinrich Haussler wants to do it for Rabobank, after getting a few podium finishes in the Tour.
Gerald Ciolek was the final lead out man for Tyler Farrar in Le Tour, and brought the American to 5 stage wins and the green jersey. In the Vuelta, he can go for his own chance.
Theo Bos only managed to win one race this season. But being it a stage win in the Giro, his year is already succesful. Nevertheless, he's looking for a second win.
3-times world champ Óscar Freire probably won't help team mate Rojas in the sprints, but is looking for his own chance to win a stage and don't blame him!
French Romain Feillu is always a sprinter to lookout for. He's strng and surely not afraid to use his elbows.

Here we go! 7.3 kilometres around Granada, including the Alto de la Alhambra. With 150 height metres and gradients up to 14%, this isn't a normal prologue!
The best time is set by Jens Voigt (11'07), when Edvald Boasson Hagen starts his prologue. The Norwegian Sony Ericsson-rider crushes the best time so far and rides an incredibly fast 10'49. Is someone capable of going faster??
Janez Brajkovic is the first of the GC-contenders to start. He rides a good prologue and finishes '17 behind EBH.
Our own Aussie, Jack Bobridge, rides a great prologue, only a few tenths of a seconds slower than Brajkovic. It'll be the 7th time of the day, excellent result!
Benat Intxausti from Movistar is a few tenths of a second slower than Bobridge, and will be the 8th today.
Being the best hilly-rider in the world, Philippe Gilbert is expected to do well today. And he does, with the 2nd time so far, '7 behind EBH.
Luis León Sánchez comes close, very close to beat EBH. But te Rabo-rider is only a few tenths of a second slower, second time so far.
Juan José Cobo rides a very good prologue, being only '19 slower than EBH.
Alexandre Vinokourov is a dark horse to win the prologu, but he disappoints a bit: 18th at '21.
Joaquím Rodríguez hates riding against the clock, even with a steep hill in it. He finishes in 45th, '29 behind the winner.
With getting older, Denis Menchov is loosing his explosive cycling abilities. So a 15th place, '20 behind the winner is a bit expected.
Fränk Schleck has to minimize the loss today. With a 27th place, '25 behind the winner, he manages to do so.
The penultimate rider to start is Igor Antón. And just as in the Giro, he rides a great hilly prologue. He rides the 4th time so far, only '9 behind EBH.
The last rider to start is Andy Schleck. He needs to grow to his best form, so he knows he won't win today. But with the 5th time, only '11 behind Boasson Hagen, he can be very satisfied.

Today's winner
So it's Edvald Boasson Hagen who wins the first stage. I've got a feeling that it won't be the last one!
Word from the DS
We can look back at a great start of the Vuelta. Schleck getting 5th and Bobridge in 7th is beyond our expectations!
