VoetsT: Yeah, I guess two classifications and a GC top 10 isn't all bad

Rider of the Month: Thomas Löfkvist, Volvo – SAS. Winning Tirreno and finishing 3rd in Catalunya makes this the best month of the Swedes career.
Nordic rider of the month: Thor Hushovd, Volvo – SAS. Thor won the first two cobbled races of the season proving that he might be getting old, but he is far from retiring. That deserves a mention alongside Thomas.
Thor Hushovd
How can a 37-year old rider dominate the first two cobbled classics like this?
Will, determination and experience. The question is rather how strong teams like Nissan and Rabobank allowed a former Paris – Roubaix winner to go on a trip like these. I expect they have learned their lesson now…
You have reached an age, where people have started talking about your possible retirement. For how long do you expect to keep racing?
As long as I can keep winning something. I believe it’s important for young rider like McDermott to have some experienced guys to tell him some of the tricks.
For now I have signed a contract going through next season as well, but if you look at Jens Voigt it’s easy to see that it’s possible to continue making great results on the WT for a long time still. After all he is 43 and still not retirering!
What about the rest of the season? Will you be going for another green jersey in the Tour?
Yes and no.
The team wants to win the jersey, but I have to realize that I have lost a lot of speed in the sprints in the last year. So instead I will be setting up Edvald for Green. We want to keep the jersey on the team and on a Norwegian, but there comes a time when a man has to realize he’s getting older.
I dare say the teams results this month have raised quite a few brows in the public. What has happened to the team?
Nothing. Thomas have finally found the level everyone expected him to years ago, Brian was lucky that Cofidis were so bad at defending their lead and I have been shaping my season to top for these early classics.
The managers wanted to make this the best team in the world and it seems they’re getting closer to that goal…

This month Garmin announced they will stop and Sharp will most likely become sole sponsor of the team next year.
Who will replace Vodafone on the other hand is still to be found out.
As earlier told Lotto will stop their engagement in cycling at the end of the season. Apparently Belisol will be sole sponsor from next season.
After some disappointing seasons Basque veteran Samuel Sánchez has decided to put an end to his career after this season.

Ronde van Vlaanderen
The culmination of the cobbles-season for all the Belgians. Boonen will be extremely determined to repeat his win from last year, but we will do our best to find a way to cheat him and Cancellara again.
Nissan is leaving nothing to coincidence as no break gets more than two minutes – no matter how bad the riders are on cobbles.
Nissans effort has some effect on the number of riders in the peloton and with 120 km to go the front group counts only 28 riders. My main guys are in there, but they all claim to have heavy legs today.
Nissan seems determined to make the classics boring of possible and with 55 km to go they still manage to keep the lid on the race.
With 40 km to go we had had enough of the completely action-less race, so Hushovd tries with another long attack.
And that opens up the race.
25 km to go and Thor has 45 seconds to Offredo, Chavanel, Boonen, Langeveld and Eisel and a further 30 seconds to the rest of the favourites.
The group gets reunited with 18 km to the line.
With 12 km to go the favourites group crack and so does Hushovd, McDermott and Breschel, who all end up in the second group.
Matti tries to get away from the others behind, but he just haven’t got the legs today it seems.
Boonen makes the Belgians happy as he takes a solo win making him the sole record holder with four career wins.
At least Breschel wins the sprint in his group, but not quite the Ronde we had hoped for!

The WT rankings are very good reading for the Team, lets hope they are still dominant at the end of the season |

VoetsT: No, we can't win them all
sutty: In deed we have had a very good season start and an extraordinary March finishing 3rd in Paris - Nice, winning Tirreno, Milano - Sanremo, Catalunya, E3 and G-W...

Vuelta Ciclista al País Vasco
Basically a warm-up race for the Ardennes where every rider for us were allowed to chase their own chances from the start.
Apart from that it is Christina Watches – Onfone’s WT-debut with Intxausti hoping to do something in his home country.
On the first stage Jussi found his way to a break, that surprisingly were allowed to last all the way to the finish.
Veikkanen is no big sprinter, but he is in top form after being a key helper in the cobbled classics and none of the other riders were great sprinters either so in the end the Finnish champion took the win while Martin Pedersen got CWO a 4th place in their very first WT-race.
Stage two became another breakaway stage. This time with Michael Reihs as the winner. We had Kessiakoff in the break, but he wasn’t fit enough to keep up all the way to the finish.
On stage 3 Nicki Sørensen went in the break, but he wasn’t fit enough to keep up with the front either. At the same time the big favourites started moving against each other setting a more plausible GC.
Stage 4 was very much the same procedure as the previous day.
On the fifth stage Jussi tried again, but was caught with 5 km to go. Towards the finish Fuglsang tried to win a little time but only got a stage 4th.
For the final TT our main goal was to get Fuglsang in to the GC top 10. He finished 13th on the stage, and that was not good enough…
Stage Results
Stage 1: Veikkanen (Volvo) / Talansky / Failli
Stage 2: Reihs (Saxo) / Coppel / Villegas
Stage 3: Cunego (Nissan) / F. Schleck / Slagter
Stage 4: Vanendert (Lotto) / Costa / Antón
Stage 5: Trofimov (Saxo) / Pietropolli / Villegas
Stage 6: Sánchez (Movistar) / Wiggins / Westra

Paris - Roubaix
Time for a spring day in hell. Again Boonen and Cancellara are the big favourites, but this is also the race McDermott have been looking forward to the most all season as it has plenty of cobbles but no hills.
As the other days Nissan and Rabobank goes to the front pulling hard right from the start making sure that no actual racing takes part the first 200 km of the race…
After 150 km 61 riders remain in the front group of an extremely boring race for the viewers.
Going into the last 30 kms the front group has been whittled down to 25 riders. We have Hushovd, Breschel and McDermott in the group where Boonen and Boom are doing a lot of work keeping up the speed on the cobbles.
Cancellara is either having a bad day or playing it cool.
When Van Avermaet attacks with 27 km to go Cancellara is finally starting to do some work. The main group is now being led by the bookmaker’s three favourites.
With 17 km to go both Boonen and Cancellara tries to get away, but Erik manages to keep them in the boat. 18 riders left to fight for the win at this point.
11 km from the finish line Cancellara attacks on the penultimate cobble section. My guys stay in the group as they are having plenty to do keeping up with Boonens pace-setting.
Spartacus builds a lead of half a minute, but is unable to expand it any further.
Boonen opens the sprint early and with 2 km to the line he is side by side with Cancellara.
Behind McDermott is trying his best to keep up with the two legends.
He probably should have played it cool as Tommeke was from another world today and Erik wasted a lot of energy trying to keep up getting passed by Gallopin and Vanmacke in the last km.
Still placing 5th in Paris – Roubaix for a 22-year old is something that will get noticed in the world of cycling!
Wonderful racing by the boys placing 5-6-12 in the race, but it’s hard to say much against losing to a 6 times P-R winner.

Small Race Summary
We have raced a few races to get ready for the Ardennes classics and give a few of the trusty helpers from the cobble-classics a chance to use their good form to chase a win for themselves.

After having had the German sit on his wheel for 70 km Lasse decided to go solo on the hills with 80 km to the line.
It seemed a bit early, but Forberger wasn’t contributing with anything anyway so there was no point in pulling him to the line.
At this point CCC, TDC and Østerhus were doing the chasing in the peloton, which has been reduced to 58 riders due to crashes and wind.
With 40 km to the line the peloton gave up as most of the teams had lost their sprinters due to the high speed on the hills.
A rather boring race, but some good TT-training for Lasse…[/i]
