Stijn: It's a hilly and tough stage, that's for sure. But I was thinking, maybe I can hang on and sprint for the win? In the end, the final 20 km is flat!

Willy: I don't really have a plan. We'll see how the legs are today!

The Race

Stijn Van Gent

My plan sounded good in theory, but the pace was too high uphill for me No sprint for me today. That's all right!

Willy Wouters

65 km left to go. My legs are feeling incredible. I felt untouchable. So I went!

i1322.photobucket.com/albums/u569/IanButlerPCM2/cal602_zps46ab1a3e.jpg

I picked up the breakaway fairly soon, where Ghyselinck tried to pick up the pace and help me. Because he spend days in the breakaway already, he was gone pretty soon, though.

i1322.photobucket.com/albums/u569/IanButlerPCM2/cal603_zpsa564a038.jpg

I soon had more than 3 minutes advantage. I was really gone! Only one man was chasing me properly: Andy Schleck. That guy really has it in for me (see the Tour of Mallorca last year, and Tirreno)

i1322.photobucket.com/albums/u569/IanButlerPCM2/cal605_zpsf0b746bd.jpg

When he first joined me with 25 km left to go, I was kind of relieved. Staying away with two is always easier, and he was 5 minutes down on the GC anyway. But here's the problem, and I'm real angry: In 25 km, he didn't take the lead ONCE.

i1322.photobucket.com/albums/u569/IanButlerPCM2/cal606_zpsdf526794.jpg

I tried talking to him, forcing him to take the lead... Nothing worked. He stuck to my wheel, I couldn't bluff to long because Nibali was chasing hard now. In the sprint, he kept at my wheel. And then... Damn him.

Aftermath

It's not often I (Willy) say this, but here is it: Andy Schleck is a coward. I have no other words for it. Right after the race I was extremely pissed off, and still am! I didn't even shake his hand on the podium. 25 km without helping and then outsprinting me, real class(!). If he wants war, he can get war.

Say whaaat? Andy Schleck and being nice are basically each others opposites

Great work keeping this up, Ian. I'm not really commenting much because of the quick progress, but it's impressive to see how far you've reached already. Smile

Pff, what's Andy doing in the front of a race?
Changed my sig, this was getting absurd.

ne advice: check Andy Schleck for using blood doping. Since he has done that in my story, why not in yours??? Angry

Don't worry too much about Andy, he will retire before the end of the race anyway Pfft

kimiopn - Let's hope he can have his dish, then Wink

Jakstar22 - I thought so, too. I just thought he was flat out, but he had enough punch for one hell of a sprint!

Pellizotti2 - Appreciate the comment now Wink I'll try to keep it up as long as possible, thanks!

Ollfardh - Winning, apparently. Wrong database, obviously.

dienblad - He ducked out of your story and decided to try and get away with it in my story, the sneaky SoB! Pfft

FreitasPCM - Frown sure is Pfft

sutty68 - That I can hope for Wink

Wow, I've got more followers than I thought. Thanks for commenting and following! I've raced the next one and it gets worse with Andy!! I've had problems with internet connection before so I'll have to write a new report. Expect it in a little while!

Californian Road - Stage 7

Stijn: What can I say? I'll be taking it easy for tomorrow's final flat stage!

Willy: I've calmed down since yesterday. I said some harsh things, but I hope people can understand why I said them. Anyway, I will try to force my hand here today.

The Race

Stijn Van Gent

Mission accomplished for me. Quite enjoyed the day, temperatures above 20° C, so that was nice.

i1322.photobucket.com/albums/u569/IanButlerPCM2/cal702_zps25af20ca.jpg

Willy Wouters

I'm not so good in riding fast and explosive finals, I climb like a time trialist, long but a strong fast pace. So I'm more a guy for longer attacks. Keeping that in mind, I attacked with about 35 km left to go.

i1322.photobucket.com/albums/u569/IanButlerPCM2/cal703_zps3abcb18b.jpg

I quickly gained a minute, and then it started. One man, and one man only, did everything in his power to bring me back: Andy Schleck. No team mates of him, no other riders, only one man was bringing me back.

i1322.photobucket.com/albums/u569/IanButlerPCM2/cal704_zps9fd6e988.jpg

And he did it. He single-handedly brought me back to the (massively thinned out) peloton.

i1322.photobucket.com/albums/u569/IanButlerPCM2/cal705_zpsa1085c0a.jpg

And that was it for me. Like I said yesterday, WAR! I'm not proud of it, but I must admit the GC didn't mean anything to me anymore at this point. I wasn't interested in the stage win or whatever, all I cared about is getting back at Schleck. I was like a pit bull.

i1322.photobucket.com/albums/u569/IanButlerPCM2/cal706_zps32320838.jpg

There were several attacks, but I only had eyes for one man. Contador and Wiggins fighting for the GC win.

i1322.photobucket.com/albums/u569/IanButlerPCM2/cal707_zpsf165c8de.jpg

And it was Contador who was the strongest today!

i1322.photobucket.com/albums/u569/IanButlerPCM2/cal708_zpsd1e38e05.jpg

I left Schleck's wheel in the final kilometer and took a twenty second gap. I thought it would give me satisfaction, but in the end, it wasn't worth the trouble...

Aftermath

Well, not a very good day, though it depends how you look at it. We just don't know what Andy Schleck was thinking, chasing so hard so early. It's logical you don't want to let a competitor get away to protect your own place, but this was obviously an attack on Willy.

The Points Jersey is long gone, now, too. All that we can do to salvage this Tour is getting Stijn the final stage win?
See you tomorrow,
Stijn & Willy

cunego59
War - huh! - What is it good for? Absolutely nothing!

Wink

Well, screw Andy, hope you can get back at him soon.

Ian Butler
cunego59 - Very true, very true Wink
I sure hope to get some revenge on Andy, though. Maybe in the Tour Grin

fcancellara
That was an emotional race Pfft

Jesleyh
Annoying Andy.
Can't he just retire out of the race, just like real life? Wink

Anyway, Willy got a very strong GC position, even though he wasn't focussing on that. Could've been better if he did though...

PCMdaily Awards: 12x nomination, 9x runner-up, 0x win.

Ian Butler
fcancellara - Sure was. Hope to put USA behind them soon, though Wink

Jesleyh - I wish he did Pfft Willy had a very good chance, until Schleck went mad and caught him (and blew his own chances!!). I think Willy didn't even do triathlon, he just trained in the mountains, the sneaky bastard Grin

Californian Road - Stage 8

Preview

The final stage in this Californian Tour.

i1322.photobucket.com/albums/u569/IanButlerPCM2/cal801_zpsf3734a4e.jpg

Stijn: I expect a fast, fast pace. A 74 km critérium through the streets of Los Angeles. The winner will get a kiss from Angelina Jolie, no?

Willy: Today, I just want to peddle along, I guess.

The Race

Willy Wouters

Kristoff went into the attack.

i1322.photobucket.com/albums/u569/IanButlerPCM2/cal802_zps683a5290.jpg

I had a nice chat with Stijn today (like we don't chat every day...) in the pack. At least that was before the pace went up, like way high!

i1322.photobucket.com/albums/u569/IanButlerPCM2/cal803_zpse5af2a97.jpg

This Tour of California didn't have enough controversy yet, it seems. After nearly hitting Jan Ghyselinck a few days ago, the organization-car hit a strike today. Breakaway member Antomarchi (TT1) was the victim. Luckily he was able to finish.

Stijn Van Gent

You can learn a lot in a tour by watching carefully. Today I fought for Goss' wheel.

i1322.photobucket.com/albums/u569/IanButlerPCM2/cal805_zps12748f4c.jpg

Coming around the final corner, I was sure I'd made the right decision.

i1322.photobucket.com/albums/u569/IanButlerPCM2/cal806_zps4980acec.jpg

But clearly somebody thought differently. Cavendish returns to form and takes the win.

Aftermath

Well. Second behind Cavendish isn't bad, but this Tour hasn't been exactly the greatest race of our careers. We're looking forward to go home. That's all for today. Instead of ranting about bad luck, here are the final standings of the Giro d'Italia!

Results - Giro d'Italia 2014

Rodriguez was in the lead before the final race, a time trial. Hats off to Kruijswijk, who was the perfect team mate for Rodriguez but managed a great place himself, too!

Stef Clement won the final time trial just ahead of Gretsch! Rodriguez won two stages, so all in all a great race for the team.
